Well Shell advertisement or not, you learned about gunk, sticky valves, role of oil in piston, pinging, and octane rating. So it was still educational with a brand used as example
I’m surprised there aren’t more videos on actual independent testing of the amounts additives/detergents on different gas station brands. From my understanding, most local gas stations will typically use the same gas as each other but have different additive packages that are required. This video is 9 years old and is most likely outdated but it does show Shell premium as having the most detergents: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ystuUJWae0Y.html
I miss Bart. Really happy for all the new avenues y’all have been taking, the shows are solid and new guys work really well, but this guy made some gold in earlier videos. Hope he’s doing well.
It feels like a bull shit add because they never mention that the reason shell gas is a detergent gasoline. it is because it meets the top tier fuel standard. A fuel standard supported by a lot of auto manufacturers. I learned about the difference between cheap and top tier gasoline when i was trained by Honda at one of their corporate learning centers. Search up top tier detergent gasoline on google and it will give you a list of manufacturers that meet the detergent gas fuel standard.
@@Steven-rn1oo Costco! I love when people talk about how trash. costco gas is because it's cheap. it's a top tier gasoline. and usually 15-30c sometimes even more cheaper a gallon vs shell
Definite Shell sponsored video here. While to a degree what they are saying is true, gasoline will clean on your valves; however with most modern performance vehicles using direct injection this is an absolutely MOOT point. No gasoline ever passes over the intake valves with direct injection therefor it is impossible to clean up any build up on them with any grade of fuel or even fuel additive. The crap that builds up on the backside of intake valves in a direct injection comes from a failing or poorly designed PCV system. It isn't varnished fuel it's oil particulate that passes through the PCV system and slowly builds up on the back of the valves. You would benefit a lot more from a catch can on such a system rather than spending more for a fuel grade you may not require. All gas suppliers have a gas similar to what Shell is hocking here, Chevron does Techron, PetroCanada does SuperClean...you get the point. Run the specified Octane rating for your call and it will be happy, car manufacturers aren't idiots when it comes to engineering. That being said never run a lower then recommended Octane rating or you will have a REAL bad day.
MikeyT versus shell premium is on of the best fuels if you didn’t know a lot of gas stations get their fuel from shell so why wouldn’t their premium fuel be the best lol.
Worked at a shell station a few years back, trust me its the same gas, shell doesnt deliver shell gas to shell stations, it comes from a local fuel dispatcher, the same local fuel dispatcher that delivers to most of the other gas stations in the area. Ours was Torissie, in the two years i worked there i never once saw a shell truck roll up and deliver gas. The additives added to the fuel might be different from company to company, but the fuel is the same depending on region. Let me also say i never once saw anyone add any additives to the fuel, they may have had those additives added beforehand at the dispatcher, but ive seen that exact same truck at the local wawa down the street. Im more worried about water, dirt, and other contaminants falling into the tanks when being filled or level checked (which we did daily, even in rain or snow) weve had to have our tanks pumped more than a few times due to excess water being in the tanks. Shell is good fuel, but so are other brands. Just some fuel for thought, pardon the pun.
Usually the additives are added to the gas in the trailer tank as it's leaving the fuel dispatcher. Much like when a contractor doing a driveway will call in an order with a concrete company for a specific mix with specific hydration level with specific additives. But you are right. From the pipeline gasoline is gasoline.
Yea everyone already knew that, there’s only a few refineries for it to come from. But not all companies add the right detergents are abide by the top tier gas requirements
Honestly every once in a while quick accelerate can help your engine but having it flow more gas. If it's a brand with good detergents and lubricants it can slightly help with carbon build up.
Muzalli Sam furthermore by flooring it you're actually making it worse. It's easier to tell yourself you're driving like a maniac to remove carbon buildup though. Damn GDI engines... Should of bought a Toyota.
@@ElSikario100 a redline a day keeps the mechanic away. There is actually a science to it, high revs break loose carbon deposits. And yes it can damage things, if it's a big enough chunk but it'll happen whether you do or don't anyway. So Italian tune ups for the win
Demonslayer20111 that's only true for port injected engines. On direct injection by revving high you'll be creating more deposits because there's virtually no way to for the engine to wash them away from the top of the valves. There's an excellent video explaining this. I'll attach the link later.
I wish you had disclosed at the beginning of the video whether or not you accepted any money from Shell, if they paid for your travel/hotel/etc. Because you didn't talk about whether or not cheap gas is as good as expensive gas, so it's hard to really believe anything you said in this video. Which is sad, because I really like this series otherwise.
The video is pretty much a quick explanation with some examples of how Every petroleum brand have different additive packages. You won't really know the differences unless you take your engine apart. Pretty much this video just says that high octane rating pump gasoline may have better additives that that lower ones.
Well then... How about you start doing great videos about how stuff works and what happens in different situations. Spend your life doing all the research, writing the script, record the video, buy the props and edit the shit. Post it on the internet for everyone to watch and learn. Dedicate your life to it, you know? Wait here comes the best part. Accept no money for it.. Of course they got paid, stupid. Its how the world works. And the only way you would have any right to bitch about it, is to remove your self from any paid or unpaid service where there is any sort of advertising, otherwise your part of the problem
Idiot Savant Although I agree with you, your response could have been nicer. People need to stop depending on videos for accurate information; instead, reading and researching topics should be encouraged.
I've used Shell premium in every turbo or supercharged engine I've owned in the past twenty years and I've never had any issues with the fuel system or carbon build up ever. Too me, it's definitely worth the $4 extra each time I fill up. For my daily driver I use shell regular and never had any complaints as well. My least favorite gas has to be Speedway...that's just me though...
What these guys missed is most if not all gas comes from the SAME oil refineries. Then the independent gasoline companies put additives unique to their brand. Shell and Chevron put a lot of extra additives to clean your motor and increase efficiency. I only run Shell, Chevron, or 76. It makes a difference, especially in performance and high compression motors.
When I tell people that all of the gas come out of the same holding tanks and the additives are added as it's pumped into the tanker trucks they just don't believe me. Even video evidence won't convince some people.
Everyone is always here you both like the show any ways here is a brain buster when you freeze 87 octane ice Chunks form if you poor out gas is it higher in octane?
Sorry I am scumbaggin Wifi form my aunt my name is Tim I live in palmer Alaska and I have had it freeze all the time and use it seems to work fine and I run a small turbo on a 4 banger that spark knocks with ok gas lol but I am wondering chemicly what happens water comes out your exhaust for a reason but if ALL water is out what remains and what effects good and bad it has on specific motors N/A, Super, or turbocharged,
I used to deliver fuel, and costco has the highest standard for fuel they can except (its has the standard Chevron additives) and once they do except they add 5x more additives than recommended by the FDA. It's some of the best quality fuel around.
Love the show, keep it up. Wish this information was obtained from an unbiased source. As a fuel company, Shell has a monetary reason to SAY more expensive gas is better, but “fuel scientists” paid by a company are biased- literally paid to say that.
Shell is by far the best gas ever. It’s always cheaper then all the gas stations around... and I always get 50 miles more to the tank EVERY time I fill up with shell compared to any other brand. Not a joke people, it’s the best gas there is
If it was actually sponsored by shell? RU-vid policy explicitly states they must show/mention it within the first minute of the vid. So no, not sponsored.
@@APEX_FUEGO That's only true if he was directly paid by Shell. What he got in this case was access to Shell and their employees in exchange for getting good content. This video would not have been a thing had Shell not said "okay yeah come through with your cameras and interview why our gas is better than other folks." That's why you don't see a comparison between Shell and BP or Exxon or any of the other major players.
@@APEX_FUEGO @Tuner Things People need to read the description on videos. Copy and pasted right from the description: "Thanks to Shell for sponsoring this video, and for a behind the scenes look at their Technology Center in Houston!" So yea, it was a 10 min shell ad.
I was honestly thinking the same thing like where is the energy where is the enthusiasm where is the whole island bamb boom bang Bart that I remember lol
Just lost some faith in you guys. This was just a giant ad for Shell gas. Is the price per gallon worth it when you can buy MMO by the gallon at Walmart?
Walmart gas isn't top tier gasoline, so there is 100% a difference between Shell gas and Walmart gas (with Shell gas being better). Whether or not there is a difference between shell regular and shell v-power in terms of carbon buildup isn't really possible to tell since the only source I've ever seen for it is Shell and people paid to shill for Shell.
shell 91 is really good all jokes aside, always run it on my 11 A4 2.0T runs like butter, when I switch it up with another brand you can feel the difference in the idle and smoothness
In the US that is unlikely. The minimum standards for additives in fuel is pretty good .Your A4 has Direct Injection. Fuel is not sprayed on the intake valves to do any type of cleaning. I have run every type of gas and my cars runs the same on any other them whether Shell, Mobile, Chevron or Costco. If you can tell running issue from brands Im guessing you have other issue. Modern computer controlled vehicles are designed to run good on any gas meeting the octane requirement.
Another way to look at it would be to crank your vehicle every 5.25 minutes every day, 365 days per year. I'm not saying it's impossible, just improbable.
I deliver pizzas and I leave my car running while giving the pizza to the customer so I only crank it once when I get in and that's it.. So if I deliver 20 pizzas. That's 20 cranks
Well didn’t Scotty Kilmer say that the Shell premium gas does what this guy is saying on the video and I definitely know that Scotty Kilmer is not Sponsored by Shell.
People are just pissed because their Costco and Walmart gas sucks and gum their shit up. "I save money on my cheap pleb gas!" But the rebuild comes 8 years earlier.
I'm a petroleum transport driver. I drive for a contract fuel hauler that picks up petroleum fuels from fuel terminals and delivers it to various gas stations. Here is the truth. Every fuel terminal gives options to fill the tanker with the customer's order. For exmole, Shell terminals will allow "branded" and "unbranded" fuels within the same the same terminal using the same fuel arms and pump it into the same tanker. Fuel tankers do not get flushed orneashed out between loads and there is always residue from the previous load. For example, first load of the day could be 7500 gallons of red diendiesrl (agri diesel- no highway tax), then return for a mixed load of 87 octane, midgrade and premium. It is important to note that all of the very large tanks at fuel terminals are "regular" grade and butane is injected during the loading process to get the rated octane. Also, fuel can be ethanol blend or "conventional" (no ethanol) and it all gets injected in the delivery pipe hooked to the trailer as it gets loaded. Then there is the issue of "branded" and "unbranded" fuels that are delivered at the station's bulk tanks each station has a contract to purchase XX amounts of fuel in a period as well as whether it is branded or unbranded products. Many stations have a deal with the appropriate petroleum company to order their branded or unbranded product and usually gets free signage or advertising. So what is the difference between "branded" and "unbranded" fuels and how can you tell of you are getting a branded fuel? Unbranded gasoline is virtually the same across the board. Just because a station has Shell signage all over the place doesn't mean you ate purchasing a branded fuel or that it has all the Shell additives you see in their advertisements. On facts more times than not, the station is ordering "unbranded" and it is identical to the station down the road with another petroleum sign. Federal and state regulators only dictate that a gas station has to sell an accurate gallon of gas and meet the octane level. All other criteria os not regulated. Diesel fuel is even a worse case. Diesel is diesel. No fuel terminal has an option of branded or unbranded diesel. All of it is unbranded. Another issue diesel has is there is no regulated regulation for the cetane level (the diesel version of octane) of diesel. Essentially that diesel you pump from any truck stop is absolutely the same as you get from everywhere else. So os Shell gasoline actually better fuel? Maybe in the confines of a laboratory, but the consumer is constantly hoodwinked by deceptive practices in marketing and so many opportunities of continuations of other petroleum fluids can occur that the product coming out if the pump is nowhere close to what is advertised that it really doesn't matter.
This video was a let down. Science garage was one of the main reasons I subbed to donut. Don't ever do a whole video ad again. It isn't worth it, whatever shell paid you.
to all the people bitching about this being a 10 minute Shell ad... they never once said that V-Power was the best gas or anything. this video warns against cheap gas, but never once really endorses Shell gasoline.
Very cool. Rad that you went to Shell’s lab and saw all the equipment and such. To hell with all these guys whining about an “ad” in their free content.
You need to be more transparent when you do videos with companies outside RU-vid, especially when it's with something like a multinational oil company. Love this channel and all your other vids but this left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I guess I should have used Shell VPower premium fuel.
I was spending 45 to 50 per pump in my camaro ss not realizing that I could use 87. I've been saving up to 12 dollars each pump since. To put that into perspective I pump every 4 to 5 days.
"Our gas is better than everyone else's because we say so." - Shell employee who is obviously a PR guy working in a PR "lab". A real scientist or chemist is not going to blab on about the competition. Nice ad, guys.
The truth is that gas in the states has so many additives that even the cheap fuel works pretty good at removing gunk. It also depends on what type of engine you have as well since some engines squirt fuel on the valves, which in turn reduces the gunk on the valves since it's cleaning them. And you shouldn't run premium fuel on a car that is not tuned to run on premium. You'd just be wasting money 😉
@@Singleturbo-sk9qp I drive a 1999 Lexus GS400 nigga it was a joke. HurR duRR basically A soopRa not even I call my car that shit and it also has a 2jz. So fucking dumb.
If you want to know if a restaurant is good do you go ask the chef? What they should have done is gone to a good mechanic, tuner, car manufacturer or anyone who takes apart a lot of engines and asked them whether these fuels and additives make any difference.
Pff easy problem to solve, delete the stupid egr crap and redirect crank case vapors to a catch can. Your engine will thank you and live a hell of a lot longer ( as long as you change the oil) and run better
I don't know about Shell gas, but Premium gas is definitely better for your vehicle versus regular. Originally when I was putting regular gas, my vehicles began to feel sluggish and underpowered. After switching to Premium fuel, the sluggishness disappeared and the performance peaked (the SUV drove like new). In my case, premium gas made a world of difference.
There's a few reasons that could be, spark plugs not being OEM, a lot of carbon build up creating higher compression, variable valve timing, etc. Without knowing what vehicle it is, I'll just assume your SUV had VVT capability. If not, something was fucked up to some degree.
I think he was on the fence about this one knowing we would all comment and say it was just an advertisement... Shows he actually cares but was asked to do it ... Everyone has a boss ... Not sure what was up with the Mexican lady... She didn't do shell any favours for how technical she was lol ... I reckon the original person who had to do it was sick they got a dudes mum in to replace !!
Crazy how many people complain that they use shell experts to explain the importance of gasoline. Never once did they say use shell gas. Donuts using specific demonstrations to show you how it work. But here’s is a sidenote by somebody who has pulled apart more engines than I can count, and has multiple high-performance engines that I drive shell high-octane is the best in the business no question they double the number of additives in their high-octane more than the next competitor. now all the little squirt boys can go in the corner and freak out about that.
? Ethanol doesn't cause "bad burns" or misfires. Also ALL gas is required by law to have ethanol mixed in since 2007. Even the supposed ethanol free stuff has small amounts of ethanol.
My aunt and uncle are the original owners of a 97 Toyota 4 runner. They put nothing but Racetrac and 711 gas for 21 years (87 octane). Has never broken down. I'm sure shell v power works but I don't need to keep a car more than 20 years anyways.
Everyone in this thread complaining about this being a Shell ad, just shut the hell up. We're here to learn doesn't matter who sponsors it. And yes v-power is the best fuel for a car. Fight me on this 💪😂
I feel bad for Bart in this video. He's still energetic and makes you want to know about the subject at hand, however, he knew there was bad intentions behind this sponsorship. Sure it may be a great financial incentive for Donut Media, but the gas propaganda is just shoved in your face instead of a purely education and learning video/moment like many other Science Garage episodes. I watch this series to get to know my car better, but you're really making me want to get an EV more and more. I wouldn't have to deal with the engine gunk or all the other parts that aren't in an EV. I respect the Shell employees doing their job, however, this isn't the future. RIP to my interest in future Science Garage episodes... I'll have to give Donut my first dislike since I subbed and stick to Wheel House and Up to Speed :(
From what I have learned over the years, avoid buying gasoline from a rinky dink station that is a lot cheaper than others, and run a seafoam clean through the vacuum line and fuel tank about once a year. Shell gas is really good, but it is usually about 20 cents more per gallon. If you want a clean engine, buy gas from a cheaper, yet reputable brand, and spend that saved money on a seafoam treatment.
@@falconater68 you can watch reviews of how well it cleans the engine. Now matter how well your car is tuned, you cannot escape the byproducts of combustion.
I'll add, more important than any of that though...don't buy gas from super old shoddy looking stations no matter the brand (potential water leaks or debris build up in the old tanks). Don't buy gas from stations which see very little traffic (potential really old gas especially if you're using 93). Don't buy gas while a fuel truck is there refilling the station (the pumping can stir up debris in the tank bringing it to the pickups to pump into your car).
My tuner suggested it on my car, I have a stage 2 tune with a stock turbo setup. Been pumping Shell since, and 60k miles later the car still runs like a champ.
Arlimisttv Can’t say for sure but I know it feels good for that V-Power and if I pay cash with fuel rewards, premium ends up being cheaper than non brand gas stations around so win win
Wow! From the comments below, it seems like people are not liking this video. Maybe you guys need to visit Chevron, Mobile, 76, ARCO, etc to show that this is not just a Shell advert. Then again they would probably think you were doing an advert for each of those companies. Hmmmmm......what would be a great video is to pit the different companies against each other. The test would be to get a few barrels of gasoline from each of the companies. Do the equivalent of 100K miles of engine use using identical engines and the same oil. Run and maintain the engines the same way. Then see which gasoline company makes a "better" gasoline. Once you do that, you could pick one of the top companies and test between the different octane ratings to see if an engine that uses 87 runs "better" using 91. Unfortunately, I know from experience do not put 87 in an engine that requires 91..whooops.... And since, Pumphrey keeps claiming he makes a million dollars per episode in his Up To Speed videos; he should be able to fund this test easily. LOL
I bought my first new car in 2016 a Toyota Corolla. The dealer told me to use a good quality gas. Not from a cheap station. I chose to buy Shell gas. My Toyota only needs regular 87 gas. No problems so far. I am going to stick with shell. It's really doesn't cost more than the cheap places and i can be confident that i am treating my car good. Before anyone asks. No I don't work for Shell, i am just happy with there gas!
This doesn't tell us how the different brands compare with each other. This doesn't tell us if "Top Tier" gas is worth it. This doesn't tell us where Shell's "low-quality" gas sample came from. Dumb ad video, waste of time.
My superbike won’t take anything but Shell 91 V-Power with Nitro+. Tried Chevron with Techron and Mobil 1 and my bike rides like shit. Went back to Nitro+ Shell and again, can’t keep it on the speed limit. Shit’s amazing. I put that in my cars too. Nothing else!
What i learned from mechanics school is that the fuel additives gas companies use can actually better fuel economy, keep your engine clean, remove deposits, lubricate and cool the combustion chamber, and raise octane. Like back in the day when they used lead in fuel. May have been bad for the environment and made people retarded, but boy, did it raise octane by miles. It also was a really good lubricant. Now, we have less harmful additives like ethanol, which can raise your octane to triple digits. One of my teachers mentioned that either shell or arco uses oxygen in their fuel to better assist combustion, since theres already oxygen mixed in ready to burn. How the automotive industry progresses is amazing to me
@@Omar-em7rlyou're right this is a shell ad, but there is such a thing as better gas.
