I feel like ttrpgs are like MMOs as to where people stick to what they know, this grandfathering problem is what is happening to WoW. Because who the hell wants to support Blizzard aside from those who don't want to give new MMOs a shot? Just like people who stick to D&D and Pathfinder.
I'm a basement level TTRPG developer, and I really enjoyed listening to this conversation. I don't have a lot of people to talk game design to, and this has been vicariously satisfying. Listening to this, the common feature that stood out to me about this "next gen" genre label is the video game influence. If you can stomach me directly referencing the dragon in the room: DnD and related systems are aiming to evoke adventure novels instead of video games. By changing your framing device, it changes the game design that results from it. This sub-genre could easily be as diverse as video games as well. You guys have a lot of old RPG influence. There are systems emulating fighting games. Lancer is a mecha anime/comic. For my system I'm trying to evoke some of the game design ideas from Shin Megami Tensei, and my first playtester used it to run a game themed around X-COM (the MicroProse ones specifically). I think the defining factor is that we're replicating video games and anime instead of novels.
Thats what i want to do T_T the big campaign with different systems. i couldn't get all my group to do it so i just play with different groups so i can play different games.
