I'm so impressed at your increasing expertise in interpreting what these antique patterns _mean,_ as opposed to what they _say._ As you were struggling with the stitch count in the figural portion, it occurred to me that the pattern might have omitted to allow for working half-motifs at the beginning and end of each row. And the picture seems to confirm that. Looking forward to Part 2!

I'm beginning to think that the patterns of that era were merely suggestions. You could look at the picture, get the general idea of what you're supposed to do, then check with the pattern to see how to do it, should you have a question. "5th and 6th rows: chain of seven" really threw me for a loop. What do you do? Ch 7, turn, and Ch 7? In modern terms, that's what it means. I think you're doing great work by attempting any of these without the picture. Please continue!

The amount of mental conversion you have to do is like translating from a foreign language. I understand how the frustration of it not making sense without the contextual clues of the picture can break you mentally. Congratulations on a well worked start and success of a final project in part 2.

My mom taught me to crochet in the 1980's and she still used long stitches and short stitches when teaching me. Starting to read patterns using SC, DC and such was so confusing initially. Nowadays I use modern terminology, but when someone doesn't understand it I can still convert back to long and short stitches which some really find easier to understand because its so descriptive.

I love working with thread, but I use the pencil method so not sure if that is the reason my finger doesn't hurt or if I learned how to go back into loops without poking myself, or if my crochet is looser. It is a matter of going through the stitches like a ball point needle pushes through the fabric making the fabric go around it instead of a sharp needle that punches through the fabric. The fabric being the stitches already worked. Hope it gets better.

Row 5 -- the 7-chains ought to end up between the 2 double crochets for a symmetric look. That may affect the stitch count.... For these types of patterns it may make sense to draw up a *stitch diagram* to work out the symmetry. It is quite possible that this was done in the old days as well instead of spending time on the wrong sequences.
@ellbow7287
@ellbow7287 Месяц назад
With this bread tray cloth, both times you've missed row 6. You have the zigzag of row 5 but not the crosses the repeat row 6 makes. But really this would be impossible to make without the picture as a guide. 😊 Love this channel it keeps you thinking and guessing. 😊

You're amazing and have so much patience. I probably would have given up on row two! I think when you're doing the diamond portion of the filet stitch at the beginning and end you're adding too many stitches. For example in the middle of the row you go from 1dc to 3dc to 5dc, always adding 1 stitch to the beginning and 1 to the end of the group before. But when you're at the beginning of the row, you're doing 1dc to 3dc to 5dc but adding 2 stitches to one side. Instead, at the beginning of the row I think you should do 1dc then 2dc then 3dc. That way you're only adding the 1 extra stitch to the side like it looks in the middle of the row. I hope that makes sense.😅

Not disappointing at all! It's fascinating to see how much "gets lost in translation," that is, the patternmaker assumed their readers' understanding based on their current cultural context. Nonetheless, I think you did great! I always prefer to make a new pattern with an image and the written description; ideally, photo, diagram and instructions. Thanks for your courage.

Just a tip. When I'm using cotton thread, I bend my middle finger slightly when pushing the hook through. The tip of the hook hits my fingernail, not my finger. This keeps my finger from being bruised and sore. Just wanted to share. Love your videos. I've been crocheting for more than 40 years. Mostly self taught and I learn so much from you. Thank you.

I’m not an expert but having duplicated a tablecloth my Granny made, without a written pattern, I had to count stitches rather than “make a chain 12 inches long.” My stitch tension is rather loose so my 12 inch chain count is totally different than anyone else’s 12 inch chain count. I love this particular pattern and want to make it. I’ll need to find the picture so I can visually count the stitches. Is this pattern book available on Amazon?
