Is This America's Best Christmas Market?

One European Christmas tradition that America has definitely picked up is Christmas markets. Not only can you find them in various U.S. cities at this time of year, but my current city has the best one. Okay, I might be biased, but Chicago's Christkindlmarkt is certainly one of the highlights of the year.

When you said Arlington, Texas, I had to stop for a second, contemplate what you just said, then rewind to confirm you said Arlington. I live in Arlington and I had no idea such a thing existed or went on. Just did some research into it and found out it's right around the corner from a place I usually hang out, so I'm definitely going to check our my local Christkindl market. Thanks for letting me in on this shit.

@@stevew8513 Don't, it was pretty underwhelming. It's literally just a couple really small stands and a few SUPER expensive Christmas things. I'd suggest going to whatever is going on at the Ballpark.
@stevew8513
@stevew8513 5 лет назад
@@thatonedude5188 It's too late, I just came home from there. You're right about it being expensive, on top of the $10 for parking a light-year away. I arrived around 6:45pm, and they were winding down, so much so that when I ate my barbecue from Lockhart's and came outside again I saw that they were dismantling the one big building. A real letdown all-around. Maybe next year I'll visit in the first few days before they lose all their steam. I'll also go when there isn't a football game that everybody's trying to go into the event center to see. I'll also park at the Subway down the street and buy a drink to be a customer there, then walk down since it looked to be nearly the same distance from where I parked. I wish I could have gone up to Muenster, TX instead. One of the baked goods sellers at Christkindl Market was from there. I've head they do a good Christmas light show or something. I've only been through a few times but never during the Holidays.

In the Spirit if Christmas and homage to Charles Dickens. He visited the United States in 1842, after he wrote “Oliver Twist”. This from the film “The Man who invented Christmas “. During one of his stage appearances he said, “Americans are friendly, earnest, hospitable, kind, Frank, accomplished, warm hearted, and enthusiastic” “I can’t wait, till I get back home “ Lol A back handed compliment, I suppose. Surprisingly it’s still pretty true, about Americans.
@itburns5756
@itburns5756 5 лет назад
John Bisset I just read about his visits. He wrote about his first visit after he got back to England but a lot of what he wrote was unflattering and many Americans were butthurt, but then he regained his popularity during his second visit in 1868 and made a fortune from his readings too. He was hugely popular.

The Chicago Christmas market is the awesome. The problem is the number of people. They opened one up in the suburbs some years ago. Last year they opened another by Wrigley but due to construction it was not repeated this year. Another was opened in Milwaukee. Chicago used to have a strong German subculture, hence why they choose a German theme. My wife is the child of German immigrants and she thinks the Chicago one is pretty much like a German market.

1) I'm not clear on the music herein or its composer. Can you tell me, so maybe I can obtain a copy? 2) It does my American Judeo-Christian heart much good and provides comfort to hear most folks still openly wishing each other "Merry Christmas!" Of course we have a much more diverse population nowadays ... one should have the good sense to say "Happy Holidays" to any woman dressed in a berka or man wearing middle-eastern head dress -- or man wearing a prayer shawl or yamaka. Buddhist monks would probably take "Merry Christmas" good-naturedly and nod and smile. I think the monks have the non-Christian response most correct.

Fredericksburg, Texas. Like much of central Texas, it was settled in the 1850s by a wave of Germans immigrants. No shade on Leavenworth, Washington, but Fredericksburg didn't decide to become German - it decided to stay German. Sadly, I've never been to a proper Christmas Market. No where I've ever gone has had one. The closest I've ever been is probably being in NYC during Christmas. Though, in my opinion, that's a hard place to beat during the holidays. The Rockefeller tree, the ice skaters, the roasting chestnuts and pretzels, the store windows... it's sublime. I love Christmas in New York. However, just today I was watching a live stream of a vlogger who was in Munich for their Christmas market. I was absolutely floored and moved by how gorgeous it was, and now I'm hell bent on going some day. Absolutely stunning.

We too heat the mulled wine with a hot poker. As we lived on a bay shore of the Gulf of Mexico, most years to avoid lighting a fire indoors i would light a brazier on the front porch to heat the poker for the bowl and to rewarm the cups. However i remember one Christmas when it was 5F and the Bay froze with waves. I live in the Appalachian Blue Ridge now so Christmas season snow is as common as not.

Christmas markets don't seem to be a thing in New England (at least I'd never heard of them until I went to Germany in 1991 and saw one in Trier).

@danawitta9739
@danawitta9739 5 лет назад
Usually a Christmas Market is outdoors, but I have heard of them in train stations or malls. A bunch of booths likes at a carnival, selling food, usually Christmasy and things you can eat while you walk around. Usually hot beverages, sometimes alcohol like mulled wine is for sale. Some of the booths have things for sale like Christmas ornaments or handmade scarves and hats. Sometimes there is entertainment, strolling around or on a stage. Christmas markets are popular in Europe, especially in Germany. A fun, relaxed way to do some Christmas shopping or just enjoy the season.

@@LostinthePond The whole town is Bavarian themed all year round, so if you open a business in town your exterior has to fit their standards. And it's home of Bronners which is a Christmas Market all year round. Best to go during Christmas time when the whole town has events going on.

OK, I've several of your vids and they are pretty good. For a Brit, you're not too irritating. Just kidding, you knew that. One thing I would recommend you stop right away is calling this series of vids Vlogmas. It's bad, very bad. But overall you get high marks. I like how you don't make fun of Americans in the sneaky, mean way most Brits do. Best wishes to you and your wife.
