What are your thoughts? 💭 Do you think Lachlan can actually break the round-the-world record? 🌎Check out our RU-vid Memberships to view amazing cycling films 🎥 gcn.eu/JoinYTmemberships 🎥
Check out Bond Almand, a college kid who is trying to break the supported and unsupported record for the Pan-American route by riding 170 miles a day carrying all of his gear.
absolutely unbelievable what these endurance cyclists do. Everything about what Lachy is doing seems completely miserable. but if anyone is beating the record. this guy is other level alien. But please please please Lachy be careful. We dont want to have another Mike Hall incident. Godspeed Lachy
I had the honor of riding with Lael Wilcox last Saturday. She has an incredible joyful attitude and was quick to stop and talk with young children, as well as a big smile and wave to any cyclist she sees. She has been self supported throughout much of this journey. She reminds me much of a friend, Bonnie Allison whom raced RAAM many years ago. This type effort requires extreme will and determination! Cheers to LAEL
Beaumont California, one of the worst places to live. Just on the city side of debating whether to call it a town or a city. Hotter than hades ex-wife, broker than a gambler playing the slots at a truck stop, and dustier than the american dust bowl... It is picturesque though, in that dystopian sort of way. Though the city is thriving compared to the town of rippley ca. Which is just on the town side of the same matrix. Also near where I try to shoot feathers out of the sky! (Dove hunting)
These ultra cyclists are unbelievable. I would crumble from the sleep deprivation after 2 days. On my last holiday, I met a guy from Italy who rides around Europe very slowly but consistently. He got up at 6 am and started riding whilst I had to sleep until 8 but then always reeled him in after a few hours and we rode the rest together. The beautiful variety of cycling.
There once was a man named Richardson, with a limerick on “top” of his tongue. Everyone in the audience was shouting, “he’s about to say something dumb.”
Has Mark seen what Lachlan did on the Tour Divide? It's not around the world, sure, but Lachlans approach was very structured and utterly successful. And that's what LMs magic is all about. He broke the TD record in an almost casual way, while exactly knowing what he could take to get where he was headed. Lachlan is a rider that can ride for 48 hours straight while being faster than anyone else. He is the guy to which getting up in the morning and riding till evening is taking the easy route. I think he can do it and I think he can smash the record. On an attempt like this, there always is luck involved, but if there ever was a rider that was capable of doing it, it's Lachy.
Always good to see Mark Beaumont on GCN, by sheer coincidence I just re-watched him and Si doing the NC500 in 3 days this weekend which was a fantastic video (with a Jenny Graham cameo too!)
New York State’s 1200-km Empire State Trailway (on which I’m riding at this moment) is truly beautiful, if also uneven. At that length, you are bound to go past both idyllic marshes and drab, decayed towns of our Rust Belt. I still love it all.
I cannot understand how a 'round the World' record attempt can miss out Asia?! I appreciate like Mark B said there are countries you can't pass through, but racking up 18,000 miles to me is riding just a massive 18,000 mile bike ride record.
I've done a 200+ mile one day stage race 7 times (in 7 years) here in the US. Brutal. It was all I could do to spin out 30 min the next day. I can't even fathom doing that 78 days in a row. Beaumont, Lachlan, and anyone else even attempting this feat, finishing or not, is a rockstar in my books. Of course, great commentary and engaging content as always GCN. Keep up the great work.
I rode with Lael Wilcox when she came through Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA. She was averaging 18 mph while we were riding! I can’t image riding over 17,000 miles and still holding those speeds.
The "Going to the sun road" is amazing. It is open to cyclists only for almost a month before cars are allowed on it each year when the snow melts. So awesome for a National Park to support cyclists like that.
Mark Beaumont is a true gentleman and very supportive of other athletes. He was one of the first to congratulate Andrew T Nicholson when Andrew broke Mark's first around the world by bike record.
There really need to be different records for Supported and Unsupported distance records. Lael appears to be "semi-supported". She doesn't have a RV with a crew following behind with everything including food and water like Mark, and is carrying her own spares and gear, but does have her wife doing social media/photography and taking care of sleeping accommodations at hotels and etc.
Agreed. Unsupported or supporter. Simple. I mean it's hard to prove unsupported given you can be communicating with someone remotely for organizing accom while you ride...but maybe it's a case of not having anyone carrying anything you need? Difficult. But huge difference in energy being used on unsupported vs supported agreed.
Re the ice cream jar hack. That’s the oldest trick in the home handyman playbook. When i bought my current house there was a room in the basement with about 30 jar lids nailed to the floor joists above. Baby food jars are great for tiny parts, PB jars better for big bolts…
I live near and ride the Blue Ridge Parkway often. The Parkway itself limits the grades to no more than 8%. However, getting up onto the Parkway is often soul crushing!
Whu? My 1 DA bike does not make me a legend? Who is this young pretender Marmaduke? Does he know that a closet full of DA cranks does not a group set Make?😊
To protect your rims from public transport bike racks, I carry a short piece of garden hose cut open length wise to put in between. Stiff enough to stay on your rim, thick enough to protect it and small enough to fit in your pocket/saddlebag. Should work better than Haribos. Plus, you then can eat your Haribos while on the train.
Regarding a parkride thing, Sky used to do a thing in many towns where you signed up and joined a group of fellow newbies/beginners and a ride leader. They had different levels of ride to choose from. Was really good and what I did to get into cycling.
Regarding Hack/Bodge. Fathers and Grandfathers have been using old screw top jars affixed overhead for eons to hold screws etc. Nothing new. In my case, Dad used old vegemite jars.
As someone that's done The DAMn (The Day Across Minnesota) four times, I know I can ride 240 miles in a day ... but I can also report I'm totally worthless, and my legs are junk, for a least a week after that! LOL! A DAMn video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BCEVflw6uyI.htmlsi=vNfcX_kExqW5sxtp
The photo of 'Andrew Nicholson' is the wrong 'Andrew Nicholson!' Both Kiwis and Olympians but the one with the around-the-world record was a speed skater the other an event rider as shown in the video!
Lachlan has the unofficial FKT for the Great Divide ride, Canada boarder to Mexican boarder through the US. It didn't count because there was a film crew. He's capable of this ride and knows how to do ultra endurance rides.
I’m pretty sure the US has more boarders than Canada or Mexico; surfing, skating and snowboarding are more popular in the US and the US has both countries beat in terms of population. Border to border, the US outstrips both of those countries together in number of boarders. 🏄🏻♂️🛹🏂
Gravel existed, but it was just a form of mountain bike race. When I raced XC in Alaska, some of the longer races we did were on gravel roads; although I would NOT want to have been on a gravel bike for them due to the washboard. Washboard is BRUTAL and really make suspension forks necessary.
Roglic: "Excuse me, I've found two unattended children, and will whoever locked their Schwinn Le Tour through my frame please come to the front? Thank you!"
Oh ffs it's nothing at all like riding an ebike. What about picking a day where the wind helps? Is that cheating or just riding In favourable conditions? Same with sweeping corners and spotters. It's smart and in fact safe. Drafting sure...doesn't seem right..but everyone does that everywhere. You can do the same thing if you want. Otherwise just ignore KOMs
Park ride idea: to avoid crashes the riders could set off at 1 minute intervals. I'm sure everyone would have a great TIME, it would be an amazing TRIAL.
Have you given Leal Wilcox some airtime to report her amazing and to be 🤞record breaking around the world 18,000mile ride. Lachlan is great but Leal whilst also great spreads and shares the beauty of riding a bike and her love for it.
Can we please get the t-shirts worn in this video in the GCN shop? I absolutely love them and was rather disappointed to see that they weren't in the shop already :(
That green wheel holder is not bare metal though. The paint is somewhat rubbery and is not supposed to scuff up the rims. However, it accumulates dust and sand no matter the coating. But you know what else keeps the rims safe? Following the rule of 105!
Hey, I don't have any friends that like cycling so I figured I'd share this with you guy. I got some cycling shoe! They are clipless shoes! I wear a size 17 in US which is a 52 or so in EU and finding anything that has fit my feat has been a pain in the butt. However I've been on a health journey (appreciating the helpful guidance from Dan along the way) and I'm down 50 pounds (which is 22.7kg or 3.6 stone which is a fun measurement) and I found that I can fit into size 16 running shoes which is a 50.5. So I figured I'd try to find some cycling shoes and after going to a couple of local stores, no dice there, I found a pair of 50s online. They came 2 days ago and fit!!! I'm so pumped about it. I've got clipless pedals coming in the mail tomorrow! I know this isn't really what this comment section is for but I didn't have any where else to share it. Love you guys at GCN for making feel less alone in the cycling world!
Congratulations on the weight loss, that's amazing. I hope you can stick to your health journey and enjoy your bike. I hope the clipless pedals means you can pedal smoother and faster which means you can do longer days on the bike.
About the price of bikes: have a look at the prices of the new Cube lineup for 2025. The new models are actually cheaper than last years! Looks like really good value for your money there.
Dan’s hair from his side profile looks the same shape as a helmet. I’m convinced if he used a hard enough gel he could come away unscathed in a crash without having to cover that finely styled mop up.
You make the argument that creating community rides on the model of Park Run will end up being competitive. Here are a couple of suggestions to reduce this risk. 1) Do not time individual riders. 2) Do not provide a list of finishers by place 3) Remind participants at the beginning of each ride that "It is not a race". If participants want to keep track of their own time, it's up to them.
re: the best routes as measured by instagrams/km -- Si is right, it's probably measuring the population density and/or rider density of the broader area, multiplied by the proportion of instagram users. I think you'd have to also set them up as Strava segments and then check for the number of riders completing the segment/route. Imagine two routes: On route one, ten people a year ride a 10km route and each of them take 10 pictures each, you end up with 10 pics/km. On route two, a thousand people a year ride a different 1km route and of those thousand, one in ten of those take 1 picture, you get 100 pics/km. Yet, I'd hazard a guess that the _first_ one is far more picturesque.
After watching the GCN Show #609 on Tuesday evening, I got up the next morning and walked up to catch the bus to work. Waiting for me on the bus stop seat was a small full packet of Haribo. The Hack/Bodge possibilities seem endless! Emergency chain lube anyone?
Caption competition: "Strewth! My whole career chasing a Grand Tour podium, and these bloody ankle biters get on one without so much as turnin' a pedal!"
#captioncompetition The moment you realize that only 1st and 3rd places in this year’s Veulta win a small child! (Not mine - saw as a meme but wanted to share! 😂)
Mark Beaumont is the real deal. His comments are very straight talking and to the point. Love listening to his thoughts. It's also worth pointing out that riding faster is only effective up to a point, because riding faster means you're burning disproportionately more calories, and the digestion system will be the fundamental bottleneck, not your FTP or Z2 power. Being a larger rider and having more fat reserves to make use of seems like a better initial condition than being in WT shape and leanness, especially when considering the immune and hormonal systems. Lachlan is probably the best and most experienced WT rider to try this kind of feat, but I do wonder whether his body will hold up to the rigors of 2m+.
I love all the Mark Beaumont videos and documentaries, they were a huge inspiration to me and doing my own tour around Europe because of them, im one month of three in and loving it
Hack/bodge: Talenti ice cream / gelato jars... you can do the same thing with wide mouth glass canning jars... pickle jars, peanut butter jars, baby food jars... my stepfather used to use them in his workshop to sort different hardware parts, same exact thing with the lids screwed to the underside of the shelf
Si wondered if brands really do have to pay factories front. I don't know about today, but when I worked for a U S.-based bike brand in the 90s, our frames were crafted and built up in Taiwan: we always paid up front.
@GCN, I would be great to see you bring an economist in to discuss the affordability issue at hand, coupled with someone with experience on both sides of the ‘brand’ / ‘manufacturer’ dynamic: Rob Gitelis, Factor Bikes. Rob has spoken publicly about his pre-Factor phase as a contracted manufacturer, and how brands did not negotiate, let alone pre-pay, orders. Payment was determined at the end of production. This approach runs opposite that which was conveyed by the commenter cited in this video. The implication is that manufacturers are not necessarily competing on quoted or actual unit costing.
O'Connor got lucky that day and was dying a slow death the rest of the race. Whenever he was going against Roglič on a climb he was losing at least 30s if not minutes. So yeah, it was never gonna happen for him.
#captioncontest Ben: "On with it, can we relax with the kids on stage?" Primoz: "Can the father of the child in the Decathlon jersey and tiktok haircut please report to the podium - thank you"
