Hi! Thanks for watching the video, I hope you'll consider subscribing, it really means the world for a small channel :) It was my first try at this type of video, and I've since uploaded quite a few and gotten better at editing/mixing the audio. I didn't expect this one to reach over 100.000 people. So thanks!
I really loved this review! As a developer of Veloren, there's loads of great information in here about what we can do better. I appreciate the time you took to make this, it's very well put together!
Hi - thanks a lot for watching and commenting! Obviously a lot of it is up to the individual player and their preferences, but I am glad that you felt like you could take something away from the video :D The game has a lot of the potential, and it is really one of the most beautiful games I've seen in a while. The "noclip camera" feature is really, really good by the way!
bro i bought into cube world so many years ago. I just wished it came as far as we wanted. I'm so glad i found this video and now will move my hopes and support form cw to Vel
Keep up the great work [and others] with veloren! it looks very promising and i hope it has some thought about coming to steam as well, that way it would get alot of attention it deserves. Good luck and i do hope for the best
You said everything dude, i played it with my friends and we all got throwed in the world without any clearly objective or how should we evolve playing at first it was fun to kill mobs and grind the simple early game but after 30 minutes everyone got bored because it's too much information, how to craft the items, what to buy with merchants and etc.
3:50 gotta agree here! Maybe after creating a way to acquire recipes, replicate it all over and add the option to either start a world knowning all recipes or only important ones (and the rest will have to be found through exploration or grinding)
A way I would do recipe unlocks so that it isn't so overwhelming is have a key ingredient and when you get that key ingredient it unlocks all relevant recipes. Ex: You find iron = You unlock Iron Weapons and Armor recipes. This would also add a level of excitement of finding a new material and dashing towards the smithy to see what you can make.
Open source gaming is the way forward. People are sick of being lied to and ripped off by AAA developers. And open source projects progress much faster.
Veloren is cool and has so much potential. But it feels clunky. Cube world atmosphere, characters, animations feel more smooth and beautiful. I hope veloren will improve so we can enjoy that beautiful game.
I agree that improvements are needed, and I definitely think that it will happen in the future! For now - I'm happy it's playable and full of content, so they have most of the essentials in place, and can continue to improve on it in the future. I have full faith that the game will only get better!
"Friends are a social construct and I do not partake in society - such is the law of the gamer" lmao these be facts! Thanks for making this video, happened to stumble upon something pretty neat!
@@Grotto_Legend XD you're very welcome, maybe you'll come across me someday in the game, my username is i_regret_this_username and we can eat cheese together and fight a cyclops (coolest mob I've seen yet)
Hytale I think will fill the void that 2014 Cube World created. If the hype is accurate it'll be both what Minecraft and Cube World should have been, expansive mmo sandbox
I don't think you can get more expansive than Minecraft at this point. The sheer amount of different games it offers through heavily supported modpacks is unmatched
I have played this game and it's so much different game, Cube World and Veloren shouldn't be really compared, Cube World is simple game easy to understand while Veloren is just weird, it's the most overwhelming game I have ever played and feels super unfinished even when compared to original Cube World Alpha version
unfortunately I encountered some huge bugs in the launcher that won't let me even see what buttons I am pressing so it is almost impossible to click anything
Veloren looks good, but it just won't work well in my PC, it doesn't crash or anything, it just has awful performance in my system, I think it's pretty exigent.
I just started playing this and it is great. Very difficult, but great. You can get killed very easily and quickly. Why are there no caves? The symbols are on the map, but I have not found one actual cave.
The game could have amazing potential but for the longest time the combat just isn't there. There's no oomph behind it, the animations are way off and it just doesn't feel good to play unlike Cube World
This game sucks, I made several dungeons with a maximum level of 5* and the only thing that drops from bosses are items that sell at NPCs. other than that the durability of the item and the repair system is very bad
I will say it again and again, development speed and communication speeds were shit and it is not an excuse that they were only 2 people working on it. Terraria was made by 2 people and look at it now. The difference is, Wollay did this once with the alpha and knew he could do it again with the Beta.
It's funny, because this feature is still exists... you just have to farm Iron Ore and make Iron Bars from it, then you can add those to your weapon piece by piece, also i can be wrong, you might have to use silver, but it definitely works with wood too (2019 version).
crafting is for sure one the highest thing on my desired progress list! Being in a Alpha state, and slow but steady progress happening by a decently consistent team and contributors. Will be a long time before it starts to look super different, however I can happily say that the desired direction in mind for the game is a good one. :)
Tbh the challenge of exploration is what i really liked when i started playin 1.5 years ago, and combat gets way more intense with dungeons and caverns
I am looking forward to jumping into this at later stages. I really hope it takes on a more mmo feel than cubeworld did, because I think with the current mechanics and the general aesthetic, a WOW style game with big raids and solo farming, and in depth skill and crafting systems could be really really cool
Somehow I think the reason Trove works fine, is that while teleporting is semi-locked, (yes ik it's a lil p2w but this aside), you can still wander off. Rather than locking a region, just make it too difficult for the player at that moment, let them learn that it's difficult and better to go back and work up to the next place. Anyhow, I'll check this, it looks neat.
Thank you for bringing me Veloren into my radar... range? 🤔 Now that I look for new RPG games again, Veloren truly reminds me of Alpha Days of Cube world! I just don't have a strong PC so I must turn off the Water shine/reflection. Can I do that??
Hi, I don't think you can turn it off, you can set it to Low as far as I can see. But there are a bunch of graphics settings including internal resolution that should make it playable on most systems :D
if i am not mistaken the no transparency from Cube world came because the developer was kind of a perfectionist and got a lot of people expecting and wanting stuff that he was scared to realease. (i think at one time he redesigned the game from scratch again) and at release he got ddos attacked and death threats. good video about it. Not sure if i remember it correctly so i suggest watching it. WickedWiz - What went wrong? - Cube world.
I like Veloren because it no has class limit (you can use any weapon and you can switch it any time), because you don't has region lock (region where you are located not influent to stats of your equipment), and because you has a free cam mode to shoot amazing pics, and perk tree is also cool.
The only two main problems i don't like about Veloren is that the merchants in town only allow one person to interact with it at a time, often gets glitched because of that, and main server is located somewhere in europe and the ping is very high from north america. (and don't say play on an unnofficial server because those ones have NO players on it.)
Cubeworlds Devs didnt listen to the community/were generally extremely unresponsive and I was so sad when I refunded their game after seeing them actually ruin it lol. Glad to already see a responsive dev who's willing to listen in the comments.
To save you 8 minutes, this game IS Cube World's successor and it's really interesting game with awesome community. I played it yesterday for the first time, and it really feels awesome. More updates will come and I am excited to see where will this game go.
You left out some important details about the creators of Cubeworld. From what I read, they were the victim of a DDOS attack. Wollay was deeply, emotionally injured by it, as a result. To add insult to injury as the community, effectively, brutalized him and, by extension, his wife. Rampant malcontent, over no communication, and slow updates bred injurious comments from the community. Plus, far as I know, Wollay seemed to want to break free of the standard model of better and better gear, for monsters that, also, scale to match it. By the time he launched it on Steam, my guess is that he just wanted to be done with it. The community was very unappreciative, I'm sure he just gave up trying to please anyone, as it's really an insurmountable task to do so, anyways, which he learned first hand. I think he was very inspired, at first. Excited. And wanted to share something with others. But far as I am concerned, almost everyone along his journey to bring Cubeworld to life did nothing but sow the seeds that in the end broke him. Personally, I think they can all just blame themselves. Certainly, not everyone is at fault. But, some people in this world cannot endure much condemnation. It breaks them inside. Laying to, utter, ruin the innocent spirit that finds joys in the simple longing to share part of itself with others. Anyone that, truly, cares about anyone at all, should be deeply saddened that the world is full of cruel idiots that destroy hope, and shatter the dreams of others with their festering, pestilent behavior, and a complete lack of patience, understanding, and vision.
Thank you for letting me know, I hadn't heard of that. I hope I didn't come of as too critical towards wollay. I initially wanted to talk more about the developers and how they approached communication, because from my perspective it seems like they just weren't that interested in communicating with the community, but rather focus all their energy on developing the game. Which is totally understandable, unfortunately, it becomes more complex when you have hundreds of thousands invested in your product. But it makes more sense with what you're saying, that they chose to shelter themselves from the unexpected popularity and harassment that followed their passion project. The reason why I didn't include too much of my own perspective on this part is because the main point of the video was to show of and talk about Veloren - Cube World was just meant as an appetizer, sort of the game that predates Veloren. I have no ill feelings toward Wollay or his wife, I am kind of the state Cube World was released in, but nothing like this warrants a bombardment of harassment.
@@anthoonius_gabagoolius Well it wasn't just "criticism" It really went beyond that. He had received threats from people who did not like things that he did with his ideas. That's pretty fucked imo.
@@fudgemerchant I've received threats from people because I wasn't fast enough bringing food out at a fucking restaurant.ive had someone follow me home because I accidentally cut him off in traffic.thats life dude, boo fucking hoo.you can either bitch about it and run away from your hardships or deal with it and keep it moving.get that pity party shit out of here.
Game isnt playable in its current state give it a year or two and there might actually be content worth ur time, spent 30 mins walking around saw 0 mobs
it seems veloren is loosing their playerbase bc of their addition of durability to their equipment. punishing players for dying yet this prevents them to progress in the beginning of tyhe game. bc the only way to get resources is to go mining, to go mining, you need armor to not die. if you do die, now you gotta repàir it or you cannot go mining again
I don't think durability was the wisest choice imo, they should have instead implemented a progression system where you add skill points to the general skills tab to wear higher tier weapons and armor, and that would be locked between skill levels itself. puts a stop to high level players hoarding T5 dungeons and selling stuff to new player and being greedy, makes everyone actually grind for their equips.
Cube World Omega is in development now, but with the history of Wollay ditching the game and coming back every 3-4 years, I don't know how it's going to be. I still have hope though.
Yeah I think if he keeps up with the 2 person team (which I assume he will), there's really no competing with games like HyTale or Veloren. By the time Cube World Omega is up and running (and with the amount of time it will take for each patch of content), it will probably be left in the dust by its competitors.
Nice video m8 and i can agree in 100% with it. And i can agree to the quote "While i haven't played in group i imagined it." :D Nice volume of bgm ratio to the volume of voice.
Played veloren to the endgame, am even a collector of coconuts, dragon scales if u know u know. Its a great game but it shows that is still on development. Hopefully at some point we will have the complete game to grind!! :)
Cube World's biggest downfall was being developed in isolation. the 2 sole devs being the only playtesters is a recipe for disaster for the overall mechanics and design
i will say that you can fight stronger enemy's as low lvl bec the roll gives you i frames and you can get items thought crafting so i dont think that you have to jsut cheese them
When it becomes publicly available, yes :) It has a way bigger budget, and will probably be more solid - but Veloren is a great free alternative to Cube World :)
Yes it does, but they aren't finished yet i think. You can tame them, ride them and use them in combat. I haven't play this game for ages so idk how is it now.
I've only played solo, but as far as I know, the official servers should be PVP, but there might be some zones like cities that have PVP off - not entirely sure though.
Glimrende video.
I don't think the original creators of cube world deserve any credit. I bought the game at the height of its popularity, development was abandoned nearly immediately after the hype train died, I think the last update was 3 months after my purchase, then they went dark. Every couple of months over the next year or two I occasionally checked their website and twitter for updates but nothing, and I couldn't refund their unfinished game. I hope veloren continues development, it could possibly make my original purchase not feel like a complete waste.
Thanks! And yeah, I was just trying to be as objective as possible :D While I do understand that some people just want to work on their passion in peace, I do think it's a really bad trait for a game developer - if you have millions of paying customers, and you refuse to hire extra help with communication or development. I definitely think they handled that bad, but I don't believe they did it out of malice, I really just think that the game became too big for them, and they didn't want to deal with it. But yeah, once you have millions of paying customers, I feel like you have a certain responsibility to deliver.
That's actually good that you can stand on top of a tree and farm trolls like that for exp and drops... The alternative would be if the trolls could destroy the tree to take you down. If you aren't allowed to exploit your environment, then that would just be a bad game.
Makes me kinda wonder, I heard about veloren about the time when Cubeworld released on steam... Or maybe a few months after. Everything youve listed and said almost sounds like the same experience I had when I tried it out many years ago which was also "early in developement". Which obviously I have to go check it myself to confirm my current opinion: Nothing seemd to have changed in the bigger picture. Sure, maybe more "details" or content like new biomes or monsters. But if each biome and monster plays out the same and just looks different, does it ultimately matter? Not to trample on people making games, heck im struggling with my own projects since I started out over a decade ago and I really respect anyone even putting out janky games since ultimately they actually made someone play something. And its quite sick that its free as well as open source.
Does it have the "upgrade?" system like Cube World where you can place cubes on your weapons to visually upgrade and personalize them and make them stronger depending on what ores you put in? I care about that more than the visible northern lights at night.
It has some similarities, yeah - and definitely a higher budget and playerbase. I played a bit of Trove a while ago, but it never really grabbed me. And now it seems like it's a microtransaction hell, which is a stark contrast to the open-source nature of Veloren.
