We, as honey bee removal and relocation professionals, are constantly asked if the honey we get from the hives we remove is safe to eat. My answer is typically something like this... "If I know the history of the hive and that no one has attempted to poison the bees then it is absolutely as safe as any honey you'll get from manged colonies in my opinion". Many times honey from healthy feral colonies is cleaner than honey from managed colonies, or at least the wax is, since there is no recycled wax in feral colonies. Recycled wax can contain trace levels of pesticides. Most managed colonies contain some amount of recycled wax in their foundations. Most managed hives are also chemically treated for pests and disease. These treatments are not typically done when a honey flow is on but there is sometimes overlap. These chemicals are also deemed safe for use inside a honey producing colony by the USDA. Of course they have to be used in accordance with proper procedures.
In regards to knowing if a hive has been poisoned, I can typically tell if pesticides have been used in or near a hive in the recent past. There are several tell tale signs. The truest test is when you explain to a property owner that the honey is safe to eat as long as no one has tried to poison the bees and then they still want the honey. At that point I know for sure that they haven't tried to kill them. Property owners don't always want all the honey even if they know for a fact no poison has been used on the bees. Some just don't like honey and some are unfamiliar with raw eating honey straight from a hive. They think it has to go through some kind of processing before it is safe to eat. Most of the time if they want any they just want a little bit of comb honey.
Honey bees are very hygienic. Even when you see a hive like this that has a dead rodent or lizard or bird near the hive there is no contamination from that in the honey or the wax. The bees have sealed that off with propolis and they don't track through the area of that carcass to enter the hive so don't be scared to eat that dead rat honey. wink wink

Antibacterial as well we pay big money for dressings that are impregnated with honey for wounds. Local honey helps with seasonal allergies which is debated but if it works and you can stay away from pills all the better. Love your videos currently have yellow jackets in my lighthouse I don't use poison all organics but I hit them twice and it didn't work I have heard just dawn and water will kill them but I don't know how that's going to work because of the location. Might just have to wait for winter

You know that that comb was made fresh that season when it's that yellow-white color, especially the brood comb, because there hasn't been very many adults hatched from it, it's the silk cap and cocoon that turns it that dark black color over several seasons when they go through pupation to become an adult bee.

Good afternoon Dirtrooster I was wondering something...I’m allergic to bee stings but would like to visit a bee farm (if that’s what they are called) to study or learn how bees work around and for their hives...so what would happen if I made a appointment with someone who has bees and who would be willing to show me around and I showed up with 2 pair jeans on with a bee suit wrapped in duct tape around my ankles & wrist where bees are sneaky enough to find a way in? I’m not really kidding because I quit carrying a epipen years ago but I’d like to have the experience of learning without the experience of going into anaphylactic shock by being stung....I’m sure people will consider me stupid or whatnot but I consider myself safe but maybe a little crazy....what do you think? 🐝🥴

I LOVE honey, especially raw honey, and I enjoy seeing them out pollinating my garden, but it's just too much of a risk to my health keep a hive. While they don't make honey, I am kinda wanting a small blue mason bee colony because they are 'solitary' so a colony is only about 10-20 max, and they are super docile, and very pretty.

The honey's safe, unless it's a colony of Trigona necrophaga, in which case the honey is literally made of dead animals. There is, in fact, a bee species that makes "honey" out of dead animals. Crazy stuff, right? Hey DirtRooster, you ever looked up Australian Stingless Bees? If not, look up a vid or two of 'em at some point, since I'm bringing up weird bees. The colonies those little fellas make are out of this world! Downside's that they don't lower the moisture enough for the honey to be safe for long term storage, and they don't make a whole lot of it, but enough that you can get a few bottles from a handful of hives at least! You're one of the first two beekeepers I watched, help, I'm turning into a bee nerd in the PNW.

It always amazes me that when one half of the comb is removed, the entire hive doesn't attack en masse.

I know this is an old video but, yeesh, isn't it easier to just vacuum and transfer them, regardless?

If the bees chew that foam insulation (polyurethane foam, with fast-dry diisocyanate, among other substances), do they actually ingest that stuff, or just crunch through it? If they ingest it, might it come out in the honey, like some pesticides will do? Or if they just crunch it, might its dust stick to their bodies like pollen does, and contaminate the pollen stores in the hive? I know Dow says it's made to be non-toxic, but not sure that includes mixing some into our food?

There are bees in southern Asia where they grow opium poppies and the honey that these bees give are in certain seasons filled with some level of the drug, which makes them a rare and valuable commodity for some people, since eating this honey can have side-effects. In fact, it was mentioned that eating too much of this honey at one time can be lethal. Now THAT honey has questionable safety, even too those who think it a good thing and can afford to buy it.

if the property owner wants the honey they should get it themselves, I would expect to keep the bees and whatever their hive consists of. If the price doesn’t change on the job I don’t see why I would go out of my way to take care of the honey and keep it separate and clean unless they’re paying me to do it. I get giving them some of it just to be nice, but if you want the whole thing then just go down there and get it yourself. Are you paying me to remove the bees or harvest honey for you? If the answer is both, then we have to discuss the ledger/bill. I get it’s probably not that important to you keeping it or not but you should have the option to do with it as you please, and if that means giving it to the owners more times than not then so be it, but it’s the option that matters. Sorry for my rant, it just irks me for some reason.

Use rubbing alcohol to save those funky shoes it will kill the fungus causing the smell .I had a pair of biking shoes that got funky from being wet and not drying out properly but I doused them with rubbing alcohol and it worked
