I remember going to the mall as a kid and seeing the Sharper Image stores full of higher end gift products. It's kind of funny that now they make cheap products sold at stores like Walmart and Walgreens.
Funny thing is, even back then this chinaware crap always belonged at K Mart. They were jsut trying to sell people mediocre products at inflated costs bc boomers had money they were willing to spend on anything
Just feels like just a bigger version of that 25 cent toy we used to get when we were little, and you got the like plastic piece of paper with the little magnetic pen. That's all this is lol
We use 1 dry erase board for a grocery list and 1 as an inventory for what items are in the freezer. I think those are way more functional than the LightBoard even though I had to glue my own magnets on the back. Also, I can use any dry erase markers I like on them with no staining and wash them with soap and water if they get too dirty.
Even cheaper? I created an Excel spreadsheet for grocery shopping, broken into columns of categories like "Produce", "Dry Goods", "Paper", and so on. Made copies on my printer and have a bunch in the kitchen so as we need stuff, add it to the list and then ready to take with us with our reusable canvas bags to the grocery store.
@@Steve_in_NJ I tried that as well. But since there are just the 2 of us, we don't necessarily buy the same things week-to-week. I buy family packs of meat and break it down into meals with our vacuum sealer, so we may only buy meat once/month unless there is a good sale. Also, don't you use a lot of paper and ink? With the whiteboard, I capture what we need and then add the aisles each item is in and if it is on sale with the price. Then, I transfer that to a single piece of paper in aisle order to take to the store. This works better for me as I don't have to guess what aisle something is in and it cuts down on impulse purchases.
Windex, alcohol wipes, and the spray for cleaning your glasses also takes off dried on dry erase marker. Which is best depends on which is safe to use on the surface (since all kinds of surfaces are used with dry erase markers, from windows and mirrors to the metal on an appliance or even tile backsplashes).
Dry erase markers may work on it when the pens dry up. The original Sharper Image that sold really cool stuff went bankrupt and closed all of their retail stores. All that’s left is a warehouse selling cheap products from China.
Bought a steno tablet, a box of 8 "real wood" pencils and a pencil sharpener at my local Dollar General for less than 4 bucks. I already had a magnet. I can take the paper list to the store, bonus! The tablet has 100 pages and no batteries so will last through 100 uses. Replacing the tablet will be cheaper than 3 batteries plus the pencils have an eraser, so no need to wait for anything to dry. I'll stick with my old school list.
I think if it were rechargeable that you could work with it. But in this day and age to me, batteries are a sign that little thought was put into it long-term use. Same with the pen. I think Sharper image is just buying bulk lots of junk from Ali-Express and Wish.
They probably figure that by the time the first set of batteries wear out, it will be stuffed in some drawer somewhere. So why bother with a rechargeable battery?
The issue with built in batteries from these drop shipped items is once the battery fails (and it will) it is either not worth the cost/hassle to replace or even possible in some instances by most people. Using high quality rechargable batteries is the sweet spot in these type of items. Cheap batteries left in cheap electronics with kill them. For me still not using USB C in 2023 or a proprietary connector are bigger offenders.
For all that I'd rather the one you purchased from 5 Below and not to mention the smeary swirls looks more like a crime scene clean up lol! Great video as always James 👍 Happy Thursday 👍
I remember the days of those paperboard scratch pads that you wrote on and then if you wanted to erase you pull the plastic sheet up and put it back down and then you can draw again. Then there's the magna doodles. I would just use a regular pad and paper to draw but for a shopping list on the fridge, just use a dry erase board they are a lot cheaper than this thing. I would pull those lights out of that thing.

Thanks for your review! I didn't even know this product existed. I don't see any long-term use for this because of having to feed it with batteries. As far as making a grocery list, I recently discovered an app with my local grocery store, where I can now make a grocery list on my phone. I know this list app has been around for a while, but I'm a newbie with my new smartphone.

I keep my grocery list on a Boogie Board, which is now super cheap, like the one James reviewed in his Temu Haul. It does a great job, needs no disposable pens, and has no time limit. This product would not be useful for this purpose at all.
Exactly why Sharper Image went bankrupt! Remember when they had retail brick and mortar stores? We spent $$$$ buying 3 of their ionizing air cleaners, only to find out that the ozone they emitted was harmful and we didn't actually think they worked well either (they were around $800 each back then!!!) ONLY original product I still use from them is a tower room fan, but what a pain in the *** to clean the dust from the inside of the fan. We also have a motorized tie rack that rotates (takes 8 D batteries!!!) but we don't wear ties anymore so it's just sitting there in the closet holding our ties that nobody wore since 2005. Great review of this 🦃 of a product! My favorite reviews are the ones that are crap! Saves me $$$. Thank you.

I use a memo board similar to this which I believe is led, but you can leave the messages as long as you want until you press the erase button, trouble is it erases everything!! Can't seem to win! I do cartoon type characters on windows ... don't ask. Most of the dedicated drawing pads have some negatives. If you draw and/or practice, get a small dry-erase board and a box of black dry-erase markers. I get the pen size. Practice and practice on that cheap board. Get your basics down first. Get very comfortable with your drawing. Black colored markers alone helps you learn shading, depth and scale easier.
The only practical use I can think of for this is letting it stain permanently on purpose and using it as a custom light up sign. Maybe have one of your kids draw out your channel logo or something and see if it works permanently?
If this was like a update version of the writing tablet the one that had the deleted button on the bottom that didn’t use that much battery then I’d say this is cool
I don't need one of these myself. I recently went to my bank twice to take care of business. Both employees I spoke with used boards similar to this one in their offices. They jotted down quick notes to refer to as we talked then erased the boards as I got up to leave.
I’ve seen these types of boards be useful for patients who aren’t able to talk to help them communicate. The more useful ones are where you just push a button to clear the screen though
Problem with pen and paper is you can’t use the whole page for one message..or you can but it would use a lot of paper. But whatever they use it’s up to them I suppose.
Use a white board, it would be better than this item. Even paper and pencil for a list is smarter to use. And if you want to draw and have fun, get an Etch-a-Sketch. 😀
Ha, ha, ha, a made-in-China product trading on the reputation of the Sharper Image Company that went out of business on January 31, 2008... yea, so many things a bit off about that. I think as a novel sign for some sort of special guests or a themed party it might be cute but seems a bit expensive as a prop.

You forgot a major problem with sharper image products, they break , or quit working soon after you get them. The products are definitely not up to Ice Genies standards. Thanks
Don’t we just love when products or toys don’t come with batteries especially when they’re expensive, also what’s the point in having the magnetic feature when u have to take it off before 24hrs or it’ll stain cuz what if u want a permanent note or list or something that u wanna keep up but u can’t cuz it might not come off. It’s a hard pass for me cuz the lights go off in 5 mins or so, it’s smears too quick and u can’t have it for more than 24hrs.
A traditional dry erase whiteboard is good enough and now for some people that fork out the money for a refrigerator with touch display on the door like the Samsung refrigerators they can put digital notes and everything else without the mess of markers , and also most people just use their smartphone to keep a list of things they need and Amazon made things even easier with the Echo Show displays and then Google made their own smart display that gives them reminders and updates for the day.
It having a light that doesn't stay on definitely makes it a cute gimmick. But otherwise completely outdone by a basic whiteboard. Feels like someone had an idea for an invention, put the money to start manufacturing, but forgot to verify the efficacy of the product (or knows, and is trying to sell off useless inventory).
I swear, every time I buy something branded Sharper Image, it seems like it's going to be cool but ends up being like cheap Chinese stuff you would get from Wish. Is Sharper Image like Bell & Howell? A name someone bought and just throw it in cheap products? Seems like it could be a cool idea, but not even being able to leave it on there for 24 hours is a pass from me, and $30 on top of that? 👎

I was wondering if Sharper Image did the same thing, because they used to make cool stuff back in the day...
I bet that thing would "stain" much quicker than 24 hours. Either way it'll probably be useless in less than a month due to ghosting that gonna occur if you don't wipe it down within a couple of hours.
If you wanted to make it rechargeable, just buy rechargeable batteries. That is probably better than having built-in proprietary rechargeable batteries, which will eventually fail.
