Yes, that place is so much fun to wander around. Sadly, a lot of the informal little birria/pozole/menudo places in front of the houses don't seem to be setting up at the moment... Last year we scored a great used pot at the market for 120 pesos - good quality, too!

Thanks for the tip - we visited there yesterday morning for the first time. We arrived a month ago staying in Cerritos and just jumped on a white bus that had Juarez on it - dropped us off a block away. A fun experience. We’re nomads too and retired early at 50 last year. Want to meet up and share stories?

Those ladies are busy all day cutting hair and the food vendors are busy too. Sadly, the last year has seen a massive decrease in the amount of food options - hopefully they all return sooner rather than later. 🤞

Good times! I never get tired of strolling through tianguis in any town. What is amazing is that, according to the anthropology museum in CDMX, this type of market goes way back to pre-hispanic times. The market in Tenochtitlán used to attract tens of thousands of shoppers and vendors each day and the tradition lives on. Sadly, I am too tall to purchase clothing or footwear at any tiangui (well maybe that is a good thing for my budget). I tried to map this for my post COVID break out trip to Mexico - do I have this right: the tianguis are in Barrio Juarez, near the Iglesia del Carmen and the Mercado Municipal Miguel Hidalgo? Thanks for another fun adventure!
@ACoupleofDrifters
@ACoupleofDrifters 3 года назад
Hi Dan, Indeed, the tianguis is alive and well after all these years - it's a great thing to experience. Yes, barrio Benito Juarez is where this tianguis is located; the Sunday market surrounds a few streets around Iglesia del Carmen, which is located across the street from Mercado Municipal Miguel Hidalgo. We hope the market and Bar la Ancla de Oro get a visit from you sooner rather than later - enjoy your next trip to Mexico! Thanks for watching, Dan.

@ACoupleofDrifters Год назад
Hi Canadian Drifter. For all the times we've been there (as recently as August, 2022) we don't recall seeing bicycles for sale at Juarez Sunday market - that doesn't mean they aren't sold there. We have seen some for sale at local second-hand shops, or bazars as they seem to be called in Mazatlan. In centro there's a bike shop on Juan Carrasco and Carvajal, as well as one on Constitucion between Aquiles Sedan and Teniente Jose Azueta - maybe they sell used bikes there? Enjoy your day at the market!
@CanadianDrifter777

@@ACoupleofDrifters Thanks a lot for replying back! That's good to know. I did go by those bike shops you mentioned and they didn't have anything used. Apparently, used bikes are in high demand as the gringos coming here all want to get a used bike. I heard that Facebook Marketplace might be a good idea. Might have to get back on Facebook again for that. I'm still gonna go to Jaurez market just to check it out. Thanks so much! All the best to you guys!

@ACoupleofDrifters
@ACoupleofDrifters 3 года назад
Haha! To be honest, we're in the market for a charcoal grill right now - maybe we should make an offer on it? Would it look odd if we pushed that contraption down the street while grilling steak and chicken at the same time? 😂😉 The world of travel-grilling has just taken a huge leap forward - this sort of thing is only for serial grillers, thrill grillers and grill sergeants. Thanks for the comment, El Ciclista! 😀

A great video and such a bustling market! I'd never heard the word tianguis before! What was the guy cutting up at the 2:34 mark?
@ACoupleofDrifters
@ACoupleofDrifters 3 года назад
We didn't know what he was cutting at the time, but the sign behind him indicates it's a vibora tree. It seems he's selling some sort of gel containing the extract from the vibora for treating pain as well as an extract taken internally to help certain digestive and renal issues. Looking up vibora, it seems to mean some type of snake like a viper or adder. Every now and then, vendors get on city buses in Mexico to sell these types of herbal remedies to passengers, among other things.
@FrugalTravellers
@FrugalTravellers 3 года назад
@@ACoupleofDrifters I'd never heard of a vibora tree before so will look it up as it sounds fascinating... the orange root looked a similar colour to turmeric but on a way bigger scale! Have you ever tried any of those travelling salemen's remedies? I'm not sure I'd be game enough to do so! 😃😁
@ACoupleofDrifters
@ACoupleofDrifters 3 года назад
I (Jerry) have been known to purchase a few herbal remedies from bus vendors. I once bought a variety pack of three different pain rubs on a bus in Colombia - the pack was only 50 cents. Upon further inspection of the ingredients, I decided it would be best to NOT board the flight home with these, as cannabinoid compounds were listed. I used what I could, then ditched the rest before going through security at the airport. Better safe than sorry...lol!
@FrugalTravellers
@FrugalTravellers 3 года назад
@@ACoupleofDrifters Hahhha, I think you made the right decision there... the big question is, did any of the 3 different rubs ease the pain? :) I'd love to hear more about your Colombia adventures - is there a blog post about them? If not, I'll pick your brains if we head there later this year.

Hello. I notice in your videos that you both travel by bus. Are there no taxis or uber there or is it just cheaper to ride by bus?
@ACoupleofDrifters
@ACoupleofDrifters 2 года назад
There are taxis and ubers however we prefer buses because they are more economical for us. Buses in Mazatlan are either $10 pesos or $11.50 pesos depending on the route. Some routes in Mazatlan only have green buses which are air conditioned and offer comfy seats - buses on these routes are $11.50 pesos. Other routes operate white buses which don't have air conditioning - these are $10 pesos. Some routes also feature buses with a green and white paint scheme - these are air conditioned and cost $11.50 pesos. Taxis are unmetered and the fares tend to go by zones - of course these can be more convenient but we don't mind taking buses at all. We've never taken an uber.
