*Fun Fact:* John Steinbeck is a pencil addict. The author started writing session with 24 pencils He adored the most famous Blackwing Pencil, but he also favored the Mongol 480. It's said that he used 300 pencils to write _East of Eden_ and 60 for _Grapes of Wrath_ and _Cannery Row._
Now you need to do one with carpenter pencils and you can only sharpen them with your pocket knife or a box cutter. Mostly cause I love when you do art things with non-traditional art materials.

"The pencil that shaped the culture of four generations" Yes, All. Hail. Blackwing. Pencil.
The fact that you can remove the Eraser is amazing. I have never seen this on a regular pencil I've seen removal Racers on LED pencils but not regular pencils that's awesome. I would personally prefer regular pencils just because it feels a little bit more comfortable in my hand then LED pencil but most of the time when I do do Russ catching I use a LED pencil just because you can do light sketching with them and then I ever find with a regular pencil so I would definitely probably try these out they look really cool.
I would sketch and details with my mechanical pencil but the blackwing black, for getting value and shading fast in an art class is honestly amazing. I was actually introduced to the blackwing by my seat partner in my sketch for design class when he saw I was struggling for value with my mechanical pencil.
The one thing I really like from Blackwing is their long point sharpener. It works really well and just puts such a nice sharp, super long point on any pencil. Super satisfying!
I still have that signed copy of your creating characters book from when I stole your channel, and I appreciate it so much! It's so cool to have something signed by you!
Having never heard of Blackwing pencils beforehand, I got my 602 in the only Scrawlrbox I ever purchased 3 years ago, and I didn't like it at all because of that same issue you had with the graphite not being easy to erase. I'll admit that it's nice to have an informative video from a professional artist exploring multiple pencils in the range, but it shocks me that even though you went through the same hardship you still liked the pencil in the end lol
Been using these branded pencils and I will NEVER return to other pencils such as Faber Caswell. Just perfect quality, shading contrast controls, long pencil barrel, shiny outcome on certain paper, and finally looking premium. My drawing kit includes the Matte, Pearl and the 602. I used them all three in every illustration, giving me a wider range of shading contrast. I have not tried other 2, but will consider if I can get hold of them. I say these are one of the BEST pencil brands in the world you can get.
i found some blackwings in my uncles closet after he died. he never was a professional artist, but he loved to do a good signature when he signed a cheque, but yeah, it's a smooth flowing lead, and the replaceable eraser is slick.
Jazza, the themed pencil you tried at the end is in a long line of themed pencils Blackwing makes every year. I don't know how they decide on the theme each year, but they are limited edition.
pro tip. use a smudge stump to smooth out the shading and gradients. then use the eraser to fine tune highlights. you can even add some crisp edge lighting at the end using the eraser
(ATTENTION JAZZA) It would be a fun and exciting video if you drew your family as a team of superheroes like your son and wife and you in a group with poses wearing superhero clothing with capes and masks belts and buckles and you name yourself and your family like give them superhero names and maybe get someone to make it in real life and get you and your son and wife to actually wear it and take a photo and using #superheros or something :)
I'm really enjoying watching a bunch of your videos, your creativity and skill is absolutely epic. But finding out you compose and play your own music, I'm totally a fan forever.
Blackwing does special edition pencils quarterly, dedicated to outstanding historical figures. Hence, the surfer pencil. They're usually prettier than the standard blackwings--and limited edition. I guess for collectors? I use the pearl regularly for both writing and drawing!
The nine old men of Disney used to use Blackwings, I believe one of them is buried holding one. I used to use Blackwings when I was a kid then they company went bust and was closed for quite a while. It was resurrected a few years ago.
I’m really glad you mentioned that you had drawn that character before because watching the intro I said to myself “I know I’ve seen him draw that character but I don’t remember this video at all” so it’s not age…I’m fine. Thank you
I also know that Stephen Sondheim, legendary Broadway composer and lyricist (West Side Story, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Company, and many others) uses Blackwings and swears by them. I bought a pack of twelve a while back, and whooo boy they are NICE. They’re just so buttery, they’re a joy to write and draw with. I also like that you can replace the eraser, and how the eraser mechanism creates a very nice counterbalance point for the pencil while you hold it.
I was watching your video when the post arrived with a stationery subscription, I continued to watch as I opened the box and out dropped a Blackwing Matte as if your decision on the best one was already known. Looking forward now to see if it really is good to sketch with.
I've never heard of the blck wing before. Koh i noor has been my favourite pencil for a looog time. But like any art supply everyone has their favourite brands.
I bought a box of Black Wing pencils (black) a few years ago and I really like them. I'm more of a painter than a sketcher but have to sketch my images before I paint so these pencils do the trick.
I think i have the natural and 840 based on the casing. I got mine rom art subscription boxes and they only say "blackwing. Scrawlrbox/Art snacks". Scrawlrbox was like the 840 but with a different design. Either way i like these pencils and i can see why everyone loves using them because they're smoother than B pencils. At least thets what i think.
Hey everybody!! Let's scroll through the comments a tiny bit before we all go posting the same 3 or 4 comments. Let's show Jazza that his audience isn't just comprised of petulant children all clamoring to say the same thing over one another..
I'm pretty sure the 840 is just a limited edition or special edition (one of many that they release), and according to reviews on the site, many people seem to use it for writing.
According to Blackwing: "The Blackwing 840 is a tribute to Duke Kahanamoku and the enlightened lifestyle he helped cultivate through surfing. It features a sea green barrel with a gold foil accent in the shape of the California coastline. It also features our balanced graphite and a gold eraser clip."
I've gotten to try 3 of the 4 of the pencils here, and my favourite is the Pearl. I like soft pencils for general sketching, and the Pearl gives me softness but not too soft. I haven't tried the Natural, but I'm not the biggest fan of hard pencils, and I'm not the biggest fan of the 602, so I'm not dying to try the natural.
I didnt buy into the hype until my gf gifted me some and slowly I find myself using these pencils more and more idk they are just so buttery smooth and can go really light and really dark so I kinda love em
Maybe do a review of the Kurotoga pencil. It is a led pencil that twists its own led(graphite stick but who cares), to make sure you have the sharpest point without you having to manually turn the pencil. I use this pencil and it's great! *not sponsored*
So I paused this to go watch the Tale Teller, and Jazza, I'll say I did not expect to be so emotionally wrecked by it But it was a great animation though **bravely holds back tears**
