This fitout will become part of who Maya is. For all its trials, she will look at the craft when at sea, and be proud of the hard work that she put in. Building a home is always hard, whatever path you choose.

Maya, it's the journey. There will come a time when you and Aladino will reminisce not necessarily about the beautiful, completed project, but more about the hours, days, weeks and months you've spent working together and sharing the most valuable of all unrecoverable valuables, time.

It is not a failure to acknowledge that you are not built for certain things. People with the patience of Aladino are confined to the very special. They occupy all walks of life and interest, they are neither better nor lesser than anyone else. They just have the special gift that keeps them in control when many run for the hills. We like you as you are, we certainly have no expectations other than your best effort for yourself. That which you do so graciously every week. I think all of your viewers get a sense of who you are as people - we see and we are always with you! Thank You for sharing your life at present!

I feel the pain of your ‘Fish eye’ varnish. I built a burr walnut veneered car dashboard. I then varnished it with 12 coats of a UK product called Ronseal Hardglaze. After sanding between various coats the job was going well. During a visit to a hardware store I spotted Ronseal Hardglaze in an aerosol which, to my mind, seemed the perfect way to avoid brush marks in the final coat. The next morning it looked like a lava flow the whole surface had bubbled up and all the varnish was detached. The problem was that there was a different solvent in the spray version of the varnish. I was very well compensated by Ronseal who accepted that there was no warning on either product.

If you get out gassing in epoxy, which is related to temperature changes, the best trick is to heat up the substrate first with a hot air gun, so it cools down as the epoxy sets. Another trick in clear finishing epoxy is to go over the finished surface with a hot air gun so it flows easily and bubbles come out as it flows.

That level of refit is almost as much work as a total newbuild so not surprised you are exhausted. That time restriction has made you push, really and that is of course a big stress factor. The upside is that the work gets done faster, when doing it as a hobby while living a normal life a project this big would stretch out for years with a big risc of never getting to the finish. You will be so happy when you get to the point of enjoying the fruits of all that hard work that it will all feel worth it in the end. And you know your boat now, at a level few sailors ever experience and that will all be to the good when you start your voyage. Thank you for sharing this with us!

Maya's contribution to the refit project really shines. She may not like this kind of work, but when she puts her mind to it, her affinity for the details really shines. Reminds me of my middle school English classes, which I hated with a passion. It came easy to me, and I got terrific grades, but it was tedious to do the work. Maya's finish cabinetry work was no less obnoxious for her, but her flair for it produced superlative results. Maya, sweetie, I know where you're coming from. When the refit is over, you'll see the work your two person team did and feel incredible pride in your boat. Of course, you'll never do anything like this ever again. But once is enough for a lifetime of fond memories!

I think I prefer stone cold, countertop epoxy. You mix it, you pour it, you torch it, you let it sit. If you want to get your edges, you wait a certain amount of time after you pour takeoff your tape barrier and let it flow over the sides, of course you mask everything and you get to scrape under so you won’t have as much to grind off when it’s totally cured. Just one man’s opinion, I know there’s so many other options out there, So good for you that you did you.
