Maybe, but half the fun is nerding out on the equipment. I had fun just learning to use the old DSLR I borrowed from my sister. I took my first photos last night and I think I can already tell where this is going lol If I end up living in a dome with thousands of dollars worth of equipment and eating a can of beans I'm blaming this channel and yours lol
@derekderek2570
@derekderek2570 3 года назад
It's true, I really fell in love with the hobby after a B&E of my neighbors house. Their DSLR was sitting on the kitchen table. We nabbed it along with a bunch of jewelry and as we ran from the cops to hide in the dark, unlit, park I remember accidently pointing the camera at what I now know as Orion, and capturing a faint Nebula that looked like a rose bud. I was hooked. From there I hit all the local astrophotography stores building up my Astrophotography empire until one day I was caught (never should have started Astro.Crimimal on instagram). Now, I teach Astronomy as a Senior Professor at my state prison. It's funny how life works out sometimes.

Stellina is nice and practical but too expensive. No one with experience would spend that money in this machine instead of building they own rig. And I don't think newbies would spend almost £4000 for just to start a new hobby, unless you are from a rich family. Maybe in future stellina will have a competitive price, just not now. Amazing video as always 🤩🔭

As well it removes half of the fun, setting your gear up, taking the photos and processing them is the fun of astrophotography!
@nmtb1972
@nmtb1972 3 года назад
I am sitting on the fence about starting this hobby, but I am daunted by the steep learning curve. Whereas the robot would take all the fun away and the bragging rights, it would help to compare with what you would be doing. Spending that amount of money on kit that is only supposed to help you is another matter.
@Scoffslaphead72
@Scoffslaphead72 3 года назад
@@nmtb1972 think about it this way, what is the point of getting that picture if you dont do the work to get it? At that point you might as well just get an image off of google. most of the time the image you get from this won't even be comparable to a normal astro setup.
@Threel
@Threel 3 года назад
@@Scoffslaphead72 So people that don't have the time to pour into the rigging and fiddling and learning etc are excluded from taking part? that's not a great way of look at a hobby. You should be happy that there are coming easier options for people to getting into something you like. more people can take part and expand ideas. more people will learn in a different way and over time upgrade their gear and expand their methods.
@Scoffslaphead72
@Scoffslaphead72 3 года назад
@@Threel what I am saying is that the point of this hobby isn't just getting the picture, its the process of getting it. I imagine you can enjoy it without that, but spending $4000 to do that? I would rather spend a bit more time and a lot less money. Aswell this idea that people who cant afford the time to dedicate to this hobby are excluded is ridiculous. Certain hobbies simply take longer than others, I can play a game on my pc for 10 minutes but I will have to dedicated hours, days or even weeks to assemble and paint models. Now if there was a machine that you could buy that did it for you and it cost $4000, you would most likely feel dissatisfied and with a much lighter wallet.

One thing with Stellina, you drag it out by itself and it's working. No dragging the mount out then the scope, collimating it, balancing it, focusing, polar aligning, finding the target, framing it, working out optimal exposures and gain/iso through tests, setting up the guiding... it takes ages, and by then 50% of the time a "clear night" turns cloudy!

Absolutely fascinating video as usual - great insight into the other side of things. I knew you'd end up with a EQ config for the skywatcher. I guess Stellina is like taking a Polaroid Vs using a DSLR. You can get a shot but that's it - you'll always get a similar shot. But with an astro rig you can control every aspect and experiment to get the best shot for that particular target - clusters need different settings to faint nebs. Maybe they will address that in their firmware. And you're always going to be limited with an altaz no matter how fancy you get with the software.

cool. TBH my talent is editing, not astroing, not presenting, not being smart not anything else. I'm a good editor. Glad you spotted it.

You missed 1 factor for the shootout. I WANT TO TAKE THE PIC. If I wanted a robot I'd Google pics. Or better NASA realised images copyright free. I'm getting my 1st scope Skywatcher 150PDS EQ3 PRO Goto so I'm getting the satisfaction setting everything up and taking the pic. So nerd wins all the time.

exactly! Ive always said (regardless that for the same cost you can get far superior gear) that stellina is like fishing with dynamite. wheres the fun and satisfaction in that?

Great choice! I've found my edge 8 with a dslr smashes stellinasty off the face of the planet with quality without trying.

So you want to do it yourself? With a computerised mount? 🤪
@Astronurd
@Astronurd 3 года назад
@@dalelc43 All it does is find it for you. You still have to do all the photography and processing yourself. And there must be electronic components involved regardless due to the tracking

Spot on - you’ve hit the nail on the head. Wtf is the point of paying a lot for something ALREADY being done. “Oh but this is me”.... no it’s not, it’s a robot. So it’s just about the capitalistic need of it “being mine”, and this might make sense if we were talking about the output, but no, it’s the robot that is yours and it also might make sense if I at least produced something really unique and better, for then you could at least say that that particularly good, particularly unique output is somewhat yours, at least as property... but you’re just the owner of mostly similar things and of inferior quality which were taken by a robot of inferior quality. Sounds pointless to me.

There surely is potential in roboscopes but this one isn't the greatest design. I think it would be much better if it wasn't as nicely packed but had an equatorial mount. 10 second subs on an alt-az mount won't get you far.
@Astrobiscuit
@Astrobiscuit 3 года назад
So I think it is a good design because it makes use of modern low read noise, small pixel, small sensor cameras. I think its clever. I also think eq mounts are better. Here is my take on it. www.astrobiscuit.com/roboscope
