Is this Speed Paint Technique Better than Slap Chop? 

For me it's Edge Chop, the painting technique that takes hours and it never quite feels finished

So happy to hear that PK Pro will be distributing the inks. Then I might wait a bit, before I order. Last time customs sent my paints back (other company) because the paint was mildly flammable. By the way I’m about to embark on a Beastmen project and was thinking of combining Slap and Goon Chop.

Can't wait to start this technique! Picked up a bunch of these inks months ago, and have been waiting for the right project.

I still remember the first video i saw from you when i was just getting into the hobby. The slightly kitbashed grimdark swarmlord and the glue/blood method. Shame the video seems to be gone now. Back then the thought of oil paints sounded intimidating. While i think it was good that i first learned how to use acrylic contrasts and washes because of that intimidation factor. I absolutely cannot deny that oil washes have been a true game changer for bringing that realistic feel to my models. After this video i will definetily be taking a closer look at these villanous inks of yours.

I work as a miniature sculptor so I don't do much painting due to time constraints, but I love to watch painting channels nonetheless. Everything is beautifully crafted here. Put it under white light so we can see the mini properly and really judge the result.

I feel like two layers of drybrushing is overall quicker, easier, and cheaper than adding and removing an enamel wash. HOWEVER. The end result does look very cool and is probably worth it. Certainly more so than acrylic basecoats and edge highlighing

Very nice. I am painting with oil as well. It is very good and forgiving.

By the way, you can always start the video off by promising news about your ink line at the end of the video, then talk about the news at the end of the video as a way to increase viewer retention and also focus on the focus of the video for those who are just coming into your channel and don’t know about your inks. I hate to give unsolicited advice but that’s the only way RU-vid communication works.

I remember coming across your vids a year back. Enamels and oils and just the cherry on top. It adds a realistic finish to models that helps tie in mistakes and messy blends. To me, it’s another tool within a mini painters arsenal. To ignore it, is just a mistake. Thanks for all the content!

I want to try this ink wash after using Trovarions stipple/sponge slap chop technique. that already gives you a grimdark look but this might elevate it

Would love to see a quick blast through of what Villiany inks to use with each colour for this method. All these Slap Chop alternatives are shown with a specific scheme.

Marco frisons has the best example on RU-vid of speedpainting I think. White Spirit is toxic so if you have enamel wesh less toxic maybe there is best alternative.

The use of the word "toxic" is used extremely loosely especially in the miniature painting scene. It's toxic if you consume it, but just using it as intended is not harmful. Especially when you don't work with it like you would in an industrial setting.

This is pretty much how I use to paint most of my stuff, I used grey primer instead, never thought about using white, but it makes sense.

What always struck me as odd about the slapchop method is that all the drybrushing seems like the same effect could be achieved with a good zenithal priming. Which further speeds things up. Could probably even airbrush the first pass onto of enamels. … and I couldn’t agree more, oils and enamels (along with your channel) really has completely changed my approach to mini painting! Can’t wait to try out your inks!

The very first thing I did when contrasts came out was “slap chop” a Skaven warband for Underworlds, but I just called it sketch painting. Can’t wait to try your inks.

Pretty much how I paint all of my minis for tabletop, nice to have a name to put to the technique. Can't wait for my villainy ink order to arrive.

I have found in my experimenting with the reductive technique and contrast paints I am better off with a matt varnish layer in between, maybe i was too aggressive with the q-tips but the first few orks I painted in reductive were losing some paint and we down to the white primer. lessons learned.

So the conclusion is that Goon-chop is just the traditional GW beginner painter method, but with agrax earthshade swapped out for an enamel wash? Anyway, what is the benefit of doing enamel washes compared to oils? I have been using oils for a while now for pretty much this exact painting method (but with some more highlights applied with acrylic paint later, and maybe some creative removal methods of the oil wash if I want extra grunge) For me oils work very well since I can use the method I want, I can blend the oils, make thin or thick wash or "mud", or go quite thin for pinwashing. I don't see what enamels bring to the table if I already have oils that work well.

Why using a contrast paint instead of a normal paint if you use an airbrush anyway? I would argue that applying a contrast paint via airbrush is more akin to a normal paint through an airbrush and it looses the contrast behavior completely. You only save on thinning the paint.

I’ve seen many other videos using enamels but they always apply a clear coat after the base color step and before the enamel wash. Did you not do that? I would think the enamel paint and/or the mineral spirits might easily take off acrylic paint, accidentally?

If you’re already using an airbrush anyway you can do your undershading doing a zenithal with grey and white on your mini, much faster than all that drybrushing.

Awesome that Villainy Inks are less toxic than other enamels. That's pretty damn sweet.

Literally do that kinda way with my death guard. I use a color scheme similar to the red corsairs and i only do some slight edge highlights here and there and then just do a wash with streaking grime. Easy and kinda fun way to build an army. Espically one with that many details. Also i started doing a similar thing on my night lords now, with cutting some in between steps.

Fortunately for you, I'm in the market for a grimy oil wash. I need to get a bottle or two.

I’m fairly new to painting miniatures, but would this technique also work on a zenithal primed (black and white) mini?

That's almost the same technique I use on my 30K Word Bearers, except that since I don't airbrush anything I still edge highlight few things a bit after the enamel pass (I also paint OSL and skin only after said pass, to obtain an easier focal point).

The contrast paint step of slapchop has to be done with a brush, and should be done over some type of value sketch. That could be a drybrush, or that could be done with an airbrush, or with rattlecans. I point this out because contrast paints are supposed to provide shading and base coating in one application. I would like to add, i myself do a zenithal highlight with my airbrush but i go directly from black or dark grey to white. You have to go easy with the white thought to get the proper gradation from black to white

This looks great. Possibly a light paddle sand dry brush at the end to pick out the highest point? Probably not with metal edges on this particular example however.

I'm not a slapchop fan. Most of the miniatures I've seen painted with the slapchop technique have prominent white dots that make the miniatures look like they were taken out of the freezer. This looks much better.

How you painted the skin of the other berserker example?

Can't find mineral spirits in my country. Turpentine or just plain alcohol works on oils?

How would you go about doing this style/technique with the main color black? Like black armor and not doing any highlights before the wash.
