In my previous Batman videos, I spoke about what I felt was the best of the best of Batman films.
Batman : Under The Red Hood
Batman Beyond : Return Of The Joker
Batman Returns
Batman The Long Halloween (Part One and Part Two)
And in every one of those videos, I was told that Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm is the TRUE best Batman movie....
I guess we'll find out.

The scene with Bruce pleading to his parents in the rain is one of my favorite Batman scenes even to this day. Kevin Conroy's acting, Shirley Walker's score, the environment, it's truly amazing.

It’s the best Batman movie. From the story telling, to the soundtrack, to the joker scenes, and the incredible villain that the phantasm is. It plays with your emotions and makes you sad at the end to what could have been for Bruce. Also when he first puts on his mask is one of the best scenes ever.

This movie does hold up very well after all these years since it's release, but I was watching it recently with a friend and one line that had us both laughing at its cheesy delivery was "BUZZ! YOUR ANGEL OF DEATH AWAITS!" The name Buzz Bronski works for that gangster underworld of Gotham sure, but it really undercuts the severity of that line. Made me think of 'Buzz-buzz-buzz Lightyear to the rescue!' Lmao
@mrcritical6751

I feel like some of the dialogue comes off as a little too cheesy, plus Conroy kinda has issues voicing Batman in the more emotional scenes. Stuff like Batman yelling “you’re wrong” at Alfred comes off as flat and that entire exchange between Bruce and that woman with the weird black eyes comes across as a little too cheesy in my opinion
@UltraInstinctLink

@@mrcritical6751 I couldn't agree more, and that's not to say I don't enjoy the movie, as I mentioned above there are things I think hold up well or that they did well by the Batman mythos/franchise. Even the animated series isn't without its flaws and occasional cheesy moments, so it makes sense to see that same style made its way into this movie, I imagine the creative teams behind them both were pretty similar if not exactly the same people. Re the joker as gangster: this is no doubt a leftover callback to him being the mobster "Jack Napier", which TAS imported from the Burton films. So it's canon to the DCAU (even if not as an elite mook for Jack Palance's mobster), thus if he's going to be in the movie at all, and tied to the gangster flashback storyline, they'd be obligated to write him this way. (Especially with only a season or two of BTAS behind them.)

Honestly, I wonder why didn't the studio think about making a live action adaptation of this movie? Because Andrea is a better love interest than any of the live action Batman love interests. And the way they were able to humanize Batman/Bruce much more is just incredible. The line, "I didn't count on being happy." really gives such feels to the character. I think that line is probably why at times I can't feel the same about West, Keaton, Bale, Affleck, or even Pattinson (nothing against their portrayals), because their more focused on the Batman side and not enough on the Bruce side. And I still wonder why haven't they given Mark Hamill, a shot at playing Joker in live-action? All that being said, the thing that probably prevents this movie from being a 10/10 masterpiece, it still feels like it's missing something. Because for a film called Mask of the Phantasm, yet we only see the Phantasm for a 3rd of the film, and sure the reveal of Andrea being the character is perfection but I feel like the built up for it was kind of short, since the a good portion of the movie tackled the love and fall between Bruce and Andrea (If anything, a better title would be Batman: No Turn Back/Split Apart/Disconnected to symbolize how the origin of what made Bruce choose Batman "forever"). Also, when you watch the original trailer and the villain sounds like someone who's trying to impersonate Batman and frame him for murders with him coming next. And I guess you can say in some defense, this is the studios fault for rushing production and to commercialize the film too late, leading to it's box office failure. But even then, I feel there could have been one small change that could have made this film perfection. Here's how it goes: So Andrea learns what's happening to her father Carl, and while he orders her that they must leave town for good so the mob won't hurt them, Andrea says she there has to be another way. She can't come to lie to Bruce about leaving him and ends up confessing what her father has got himself into. And since the mob is high profiled, even if they called the police and got protection for Carl and Andrea, the mob has power to hunt them down. Bruce decides he wants to help, in order so that the cops will witness what the mob's done in order to bring them down. He tells Andrea to tell her father to make a meeting with the mob saying he's got the money and will meet them where they want. And so the next day, Carl arrives at the place, a chemical powerplant, and the gangsters are there. But their leader Salvatore Valestra isn't there and instead are lead by the gangster, who happens to be The Joker. He claims that Valestra made up his mind and decides no half measures and to kill Carl. Bruce and Andrea are masked up, hiding and see this, but Andrea bursts out from behind to try and save her father (despite Bruce's protest to wait for his signal) and attack the gang Bruce and Andrea put up a good fight until it's stop when pre-Joker gangster, overpowers the two with some smoke grenades. Carl realizes that it's Andrea, and sacrifices himself and jumps into the way to save his daughter and Bruce, getting killed in the process. Andrea in an emotional raged attempts to uses one of the guns on the floor to kill but Bruce stops her by pushing the guns away, but in the process, ends of hitting a power box causing some wires fall into the chemicals and and explosion occurs, the places starts to shake and go up in flames, causing pre-Joker gangster to fall into one of the vat chemicals. With with place in flames the gangsters flee and Bruce and Andrea find their own way out (maybe or maybe not they can get the dead Carl out of there too). Bruce and Andrea afterwards are left in despair and Bruce feels guilt for his goal was to save life and bring evil to justice, not let those be killed or kill evil. Andrea however can't live with the fact with what the mob did. To protect herself so that the mob won't find her, Andrea decides to leave the city, despite Bruce pleading no. But Andrea says that after what happened, she feels that Gotham is no longer safe anymore for her, so their relationship must end. Bruce realizing as well, that if any enemies knew that he had someone special they won't rest until they gotten to him through her (foreshadowing what he'll say to Diana in JLU). Bruce then decides that he must find his own way for justice and chooses to be Batman. Meanwhile though, the firefighters have put out most of the fire and have found the pre-gangster-Joker, except this time, he's now full Joker and while being hauled away in the ambulance, kills all the paramedics and driver and escapes giving the chilling laugh in the process. Now cut to present time, Andrea is the Phantasm but this time, she's got something else up her sleeve. The murders were intentional and Batman is being framed on purpose. Because this time Andrea believes that if Batman was to be representing justice and vengeance, then why aren't all these murderous, corrupt criminals of Gotham dead, including The Joker. Andrea can soon figure out that Bruce is Batman and while we aren't shown it yet, it'll be revealed that now Andrea feels betrayed. Now this time, Andrea's plan will be once all the criminals are down, it'll be Batman's/Bruce turn, but in a different way. So in the final climax where Joker and Andrea fight, Andrea is able to knock Joker out and is about to kill him but Bruce interferes and tries to stop Andrea but Andrea is having none of it and fights Bruce leading to an argument like this: Andrea/Phantasm: Face it Bruce, I'm doing what The Dark Knight they call justice fails to do! Bruce/Batman: You're no hero by being a murderer! (continues trying to prevent Andrea from fighting him) Stop it! Look, I'm sorry that we couldn't be together, and I wish I thought out our plan better to save your father! But don't end everything like this! Andrea: Is that what you think this is about?! That we never could be together? That we failed to save my dad? Bruce, I told you before, it's not our fault. But what I don't understand is WHY!?! If you're the hero they see you as, then WHY were they NOT DEAD, especially that murdering clown!?!? I mean, after what he's done, him taking the first shots, and I thought he was when he dead back there, but no. And he's still breathing, because of YOU! Batman: I didn't know Joker was the same guy as before until now! Andrea: DON'T GIVE ME THAT RUBBISH!!!! Even if you had no clue, what in the right mind would make you think this psycho monster can ever live another day? The lives he's hurt and made suffer, the chaos he's caused in the city, the harm he can create. And you decide that locking him up with do a think even though he keeps getting out, and doing the same thing?! WHY BRUCE!? Batman: Because even if I did, I fear that there's no turning back. Once I kill, I won't stop, and neither will you. And after this: Joker wakes from his knock-out and say, "Hahahaha, how perfect! The Cape Crusader and the wannabe impersonator coming at it! This is better than I excepted!". Andrea grabs Joker ready to finish him off, gives her goodbye to Bruce, until suddenly the building start to explode as Joker planned giving Joker his last laugh and Andrea disappears into her Phantasm fog. The film actually ends the same, with Batman being cleared of accusations, Alfred telling Bruce that no one could have saved Andrea, finding her locket, except instead of Bruce continuing his Batman crime-fighting duties in the last minute, we get Bruce shedding a tear as he sees the locket and Andrea on the ocean liner as well too with the flashback of the two after Bruce propose to her talking about their plans and dreams together and they two share a kiss again and the camera pulls forward as we look into the night sky. The End. While I did get this idea from Under The Red Hood (but this movie came before Red Hood) a bit, the reason why I think it would work here is because it gives more development to why who the Phantasm is is important and why Batman would be framed for crimes he didn't do. And it even gives a much more analysis in the differences between Bruce and Andrea and why their methods of justice differ. Also, I chose to end the movie like that because it's suppose to be more of a reminder to what Bruce and Andrea could have had if Bruce didn't choose to be a the Batman and give the audience the thought to if Bruce choose not to be Batman, could he have still protect Andrea. But that's just me, so if anyone has their opinions, please share and we'll see.

True, BatCat isn't much of a realationship in this verse, if anything BrucexTalia is way more developed counting all the episodes and tie in comics. The fact that they didin't have that failure of a son in this continuity also helps since that really ruined their dynamic in the comics.

I only seen this in my 20s, but as a kid who went to Batman age 5, who grew up with the animated series and had a ton of toys... I am sort of glad I didn't see it as a kid. This is probably the most 'adult' of the animated series. I recently re watched it and it really, really holds up. More so than the Freeze movie. I am disappointed that we didn't get a sort of proto Phantasm in Gotham. Ok we had Barnes with his mental clockwork blade arm and similar views on crime... But i think it's a missed opportunity. Considering how popular the main Batman villains are I don't think we ever will see Andrea or Phatasm in live action. It's a shame because the concept is SOOOOOO Batman and so bloody cinematic. The Phantasm is more or less based on the Grim Reaper (if I recall the title correctly), the anti-villain of the Batman: Year Two miniseries (a sequel to the faaaaar more famous Year One). The plot is largely the same, but the Phantasm's identity is a little more obviously her father, which is why those of us who watched the film in theaters were going, "yeah, that's obviously her dad back for revenge, he even has the same voice as her dad's actor!" The big difference between this Joker's "mobster" backstory and the live action one is that the 1989 Joker is still the same mob boss that he was even after his transformation, turning into the Joker didin't change much honestly, while this Joker went from a random mob grunt to a completely different person, a Joker much closer to what the comics' depiction shows us, a guy who just wants to create chaos and have fun with his "jokes". He's not STILL a mobster, he WAS a mobster.

I wouldn’t say Joker even worked with Sal Valeska, he just murdered him as soon as Sal seemed somewhat comfortable with him

b4 it came out back in the day, they had a special where they went behind the scenes explaining the music score, cgi city scape, and not to mention the sound track and a list actors while explaining the story without spoilers. The cartoon series was a great deal making this movie a giant back then as well. The marketing was something you had to experience back then as a kid to understand the greatness. DC back then had never made cartoon movies b4 on this scale, its the first of its kind. Compare to these new cartoon movies it doesnt seem as special but still holds up.

I liked this movie, but in my language dubbing... we have ZERO VOICE ACTORS FROM THE ANIMATED SERIES! It's very normal for old movies, here in Italy, but come on: I'll admit the voice we gave to Batman (which is the Italian dubber of Simpson's mayor Quimby, btw) it's fitting for young Bruce... but not for the adult Bruce. We kinda had the same thing for Batman Beyond, a diffrent actor for old Bruce when we had the previous voice actor dubbing OTHER CHARACTERS (COME ON!) but that was a BIG BIG play for the Return of the Joker movie: THAT'S where the dubbing team said "let's do this PERFECTLY" and it was: everyone from the Batman Beyond series was dubbed by the same voice actors and they even had the BTAS and TNBA same voice actors for the flashback... and then they ruined it in Justice League Unlimited: no BB voice actors for the scenes in the future, and the usual Batman voice actor is NOT good as old Bruce, but he's surprisingly good for old decrepit Bruce, tho

Tbf Joker originally was a pretty organized mobster with a clown theme. His early appearances were less chaotic and more like outlandishly elaborate like trying to copyright fish in Gotham because they have his smile or using Joker toxin to deter police investigation. He even took orders from Riddler and Penguin most of the time back when Riddler was actually the smartest guy in the gallery. I think he only started to change after the Dark Knight Returns line. Even in the '90s he was pretty involved with organized crime and was working with legit terrorists and Arab oil barons.

I think the honor of the best Batman movie goes to Tim Burton’s film. As for this film, I wouldn’t say that it is the best but it is one of the best because there are plenty of great Batman stories out there.
