Taking a closer look at the Chesapeake Light Craft (CLC Boats) Peeler Skiff. Is this the best simple skiff boat available as a new boat today? I take a closer look at a small wooden boat that is built from a kit and able to be powered by a 15 hp outboard engine. There are many things to like about this 15 foot dory style boat. If you are considering a wood skiff build or building your own wooden boat from plans or from a boat kit, this video covers some of the things to consider if you're looking for a nice little boat to get you and a friend or two out on the water.
This video also looks at the total cost to get this 15 foot wooden skiff on the water and compares that cost with purchasing a similar size aluminum boat. The cost comparison between a Lund WC16 aluminum boat and the CLC Peeler Skiff is merely to show the similarity in cost for a comparable size and type of boat that someone might use for fishing or just getting out on the water. If you're interested in wooden boat building, wooden kit boats, and learning more about wood boat kits and wooden boats built from plans or kits, please visit Chesapeake Light Craft RU-vid Channel and web site linked below.

I recently built a Peeler Skiff with a center console. It was a great project. The kit was delivered in July 2021. With part time help from 2 friends and my wife, it was finished in December 2021. Your numbers are pretty close on cost for a finished boat. . Build time was about 200 man hours for us. I’ve built boats in the past and am very familiar with the build techniques and working with epoxy. That probably saved me 50 or even 75 hours over a novice. The boat performs superbly and draws a crowd of admirers at every boat ramp. I would highly recommend this boat. It’s a worthwhile and rewarding project that will last a lifetime.

I have built 3 epoxy ply boats from scratch (not from Chesapeake though) I think these are great projects if you enjoy building boats but not if you don't like building or don't have the patience. What surprised me though and this is very real is the boat ramp pride. Every time I launch one of my boats people come up and admire the boats and they ask "where did you get it" or what brand is that and I get to say "I built it". Its the difference of turning up at the car club in either a Honda Civic or a hand built sportscar. The Honda may be equivalent or even better but no one will walk past the hand built to go over to admire the Honda. I am about to build the Tango 15, I have bought plans I have the trailer already and will start in a few months once I get some other projects out of the way. Its also like a reverse mortgage as in you pay as you go so its not just writing a big check and sailing away its paid for in stages over the length of the process. I take a long time to build as its therapy I mostly work on it in the evenings my job is very stressful and office based sometimes you need to plane a piece of wood or do something with your hands to destress and building boats is my stress release. Not for everyone but if its your thing you will be amazed how fun boating can be.

I agree with Wayne. I built a 15ff skiff last year, and it is my dream boat. The other facet with a homemade boat that is important to mention is that you can customize a homemade boat to however you would like it to be. I added 2 ft gunwales, a tunnel, and a beefy transom. I highly remember building your own.

Coming from "Brockway Skiff waters" the boats built from cheap materials wont last as long and wont grab the eye like the finesse of the CLC method. Many inexperienced U-tubers may not realize this until they spent the same 250 hours, same cost for motor and trailer, and slightly lower hull material cost for a piece of junk. Your presentation is very compelling, especially compared to the economics of the unstable Lund tin can. Great Video Work!

I had a Lund Tyee for over 35 years, and they are built like tanks! I'd love to build the skiff, but carpentry skills aren't among the sill sets God gave me! Not only space for the build, but tools as well. It's a great looking boat!

Great video. Great comparison. CLC is definitely a beautiful boat and a worthy project. I would be interested in seeing a comparison between these boats and Walter Baron's 16' Lumberyard Skiff (see Old Wharf Dory) which I believe is a more robust and utilitarian boat.

You can tell the finish of the Peeler has worn off in some places, so don't forget the extra maintenance labor and costs the Peeler will bring. I found a 1648 jon boat with 35 hp outboard for $1000 bucks on craigslist. Perhaps that would be just as fun to own.

Being in the great lakes area when it comes to small wooden boats the old Lyman was hard to beat. Save one the only one I ever came across it was a 21 ft Oldtown 21 cedar over oak. She was a black beauty named Raven and handled the great lakes chop like a master.

Enjoyed your Peleer Skiff video. Got me thinking about a dory/skiff type boat. This is after I purchased a 12' Lowe Sea Nymph aluminum v Hull with a Merc 6hp fourstroke and a trailer. I found the Lowe to be a little more unstable than I was willing to put up with. So, it went up for sale. And sold quickly. My continued searched settled in on a 14' 2001 Stur Dee Amesbury Dory that was for sale in my area. After doing some research, I made an offer and it was accepted. I now own a dory that has been outfitted with an old Johnson 15hp 2 stroke with electric start. The recommended max HP for the dory is 15hp. Wide open with only me aboard results in a speed of 21 mph. More than I require. It handles very nicely and has beautiful lines. The flat bottom is ideal for someone who likes to move around in the boat. Thanks again for a great and informative video.

This was a nice change up from from your other videos. Im a catfisherman in the midwest, so I don't think the peeler would be a good fit for what I do. To answer your question in the video, yes, I am happy with my 2 boats. I have a 1985 Lowe 1652 with a 40hp Suzuki and 1978 Lund SV14 with a 25hp Johnson. Love the content you put out, its very informative, practical and applies to those of us with a small budget. Thank you for taking time to upload the videos. Always looking forward to your content.

I built something quite similar to the Peeler, about 20 years ago, if you stood 50’ away and squinted a bit. She was a little longer and a little skinnier (16’ x 5’) and she carried a bit more freeboard, but very similar lines.Didn’t build to any established plans, just experience with boats, didn’t put a lot of time into finish or bright work (zero varnish was used actually) Had a lot more rocker than the Peeler and didn’t quite plane, more like semi-planed like an old school lobster boat. Had a little 9.8 on the back and would do 15knts all day with 2 people, although with 3 she wasn’t as sporty. But sporty wasn’t in the design brief lol. All I wanted was something that could take some significant loading without dragging its stern through the water inefficiently, and would be suited to the conditions that are typical of Buzzards Bay. So as a work boat she did very well for herself and I think all in I paid something like 3.5k or a bit less in 2002 dollars for everything including the engine. You can have a lot of boat for surprisingly little if you put function over form, and don’t care if she dresses up well. Fortunately sea kindly shapes are also typically esthetically pleasing as well. 14 degree forward rake on the bow and a 7 degree aft rake on the transom with the sides likewise flared out by 7 degrees, the sides were 2 foot x 16 foot plywood sheets with the angles for the bow and stern a bit exaggerated. I started with the center frame and attach the sides to that, built the transom and attached that to both sides. The stem was some hard wood, white oak I think, that was ripped on the table saw to the right angles to cleanly accept the sides, with the inside edge of the sides and the forward edge of the stem being flush (so the sides stuck forward of the stem making a V which was planed flush) The stem was also a bit shorter than the sides by some poorly remembered fraction over an inch to allow the “keel” to be fitted (a 2 x 6 x 16’ of I believe cedar, that had been passed through a planner) that would fit to the stem and through a mortise in the center frame and the transom frame. The chine log was similarly fitted but it had the top edge angled with the table saw, and the bottom edge was planned flat. The bottom was then traced out from the hull itself cut and glued and screwed in place like everything else was then some intermittent bottom frames were placed to prevent oil drumming. Systems were mostly salvage parts with a double drum wire steering with galvanized wire and controls “donated” by a boat that was about to be crushed. The nicest thing on that boat besides the brand new engine, was the bow light which came off a 16’ Chris Craft. But all told it still took me probably some 100 hours to get it all done. Could have likely been less but, well I like beer…
@boblister665
@boblister665 Год назад
These are great little recreational boats. As far as comparing it to a work boat most work boats would have the beam as wide as the gunnel except in the bow area may have some flare. A shell fisherman would be able to put his feet up to the chine and put his knees against the sides for stability. Also he could work from the side without noticeable tipping. Pulling a clam rake from a peeler skiff would kill your back by the end of the day.

I'm trying to like going boating more than I like nifty boats, so I'm sticking to the 14 V hull with the 8 HP Johnson. great segment sir. the peeler skiff is a really neat looking boat. i love the lines and as you mentioned is competitively priced. That said, i don't think i would enjoy putting it together. i don't have the patience nor the assembly/construction skills necessary.....lol. I'd probably opt for the Lund. i looked at them for a while as i thought i might be in the market for a V-bottom or Jon boat but ended up getting a Old Town Discovery Sport 15 with the transom in the back. I liked the idea that i could transport it in the back of my pick up, take it to a soft launch point and not have to mess with the boat ramps which can become a little crowded along Chesapeake Beach area. I plan on putting a 4 hp with an aux tank on it so i can navigate the river and the bay on calm days. i have outriggers that i may put on it that would help with stability on rougher days. thanks again for posting.

something to think about…….worms don’t eat aluminum. Even if you didn’t take care of the aluminum hull…..it will far outlast the wood boat. Old aluminum boats had wood transom boards. Those were the parts that needed to be maintained and replaced. There is a reason why boat companies advertise that their models are completely wood free.

I'm on the North Atlantic and have fell in love with whaly polyethylene boats. If you want a super safe, do anything boat that can be easily beached while still handling heavy seas, requires zero maintenance and costs less than 10,000$ all in in clouding motor and trailer then whaly really has to be considered. In the maritime provinces of eastern canada whaly is taking over.....seeing them everywhere and lots of guys trading in much more expensive vessels for these simple boats due to reliability, cost and lack of maintenance.

Yeah I find those beautiful wooden boats to be pretty awesome its just that I would like to keep it looking that way, and us wanting to use the boat and be on the water all the time it would probably show so after a while therefore I have to lean towards fiberglass. I'm on the water allot and cleaning the boat is routine but with a wooden boat like those I might find myself needing to baby the boat to keep its looks

One thing to keep in mind is this isn't like an old wooden boat that was just painted. It's coated in fiberglass and epoxy - it's really a type of composite boat. The wear on the bow of the boat in the video is specific to being beached, and is not hard to fix with some fiberglass and epoxy.
@TheBeaker59
@TheBeaker59 Год назад
@@BenjaminHeyser also if you built it you already have the skills to fix it. My first build was a tender for my big boat its a ply epoxy dinghy and gets worked really hard some guys who borrowed it once dropped it on to concrete and broke a bulkhead it was overdue for a tidy anyway I took it home from the yacht club and reglassed some small damage sanded and painted over a week and had it back the next weekend looking like new. In fact people really thought I had bought a new dinghy.

On top of all the positives you mention in the Video IMO The Peeler is a time tested good looking Vessel from a extremely well respected designer and company i personally love the Center Console option look and Conveinence no disrespect Wayne but you and I are about the same age and over the years having a comfortable safe area to conserve energy and to perform a task will only make life easier even though Wooden boats do require some TLC and Upkeep (like all boats ) a gigantic plus of this Boat is definitely it’s very manageable for one or two people to get all of this ones requirements done in a Weekend or so in a typical residential garage without the need for heavy equipment or expensive tooling with some ingenuity one man should be capable of flipping or “rolling” the boat over to access every part of her for repairs and/or maintenance ! that’s a big plus that you don’t need Yard time that’s difficult to schedule and Costly that most Wooden boats do require i also think a nice addition to the Peeler would be some Canvas and Isenglass Enclosure to get out of foul weather and add more versatility without breaking the Bank ! I’ve been a boater for over 45 years and i bought my own Walking Foot Sewing Machine for my own repairs Canvas & Vinyl work ! you could easily convert this Skiff into a overnighter with a small galley and Sleeping accomodations if you wanted IMO

IF a Lund is a viable alternative to you (for what the Peeler is designed for) - boats probably are just not your thing:)

That’s a great looking boat and I too would love one of that type. I’ve had a wooden boat. Old school type and build but no glass work in it. It was a great boat. Lots of upkeep went into it for several years before getting the first aluminum boat. Later I had a nice fiberglass boat. All my boats have been in the 15’ range and of the simpler varieties without fancy embellishments such as a lot of carpet or fancy upholstery. I’m back to aluminum. The two aluminum boats I have, a 15’ wide beam jon rated at 25hp, and a 14’ V bottom with a 53” beam rated at 15hp, have become the most perfect boats for me. Still, if I was a much younger man, I’d love to have a Peeler Skiff like that. Nothing compares to the feel of a solidly constructed wooden boat on the water. Lakes and rivers in my area are full of rocks and jags and that wreaked havoc on my old wooden boat. I did not abuse the boat or treat it without care but just the normal use of loading and launching and beaching up when you want is rough on any boat but more so in my opinion if it’s a wood boat unless you just simply go to complete powder puff handling of the craft.

I'd rather find a slightly used Mirrorcraft model 3696. It has a simple floor in the center, no center bench to climb over, 16', 343 pounds, 1,100 pound capacity, & it will take a motor up to 25 horsepower. It's a nice step up from your basic aluminum row boat without getting too fancy or costly. The length of the boat & capacity are quite good in my opinion. I can see it being somewhat popular for several reasons. Short clip of one - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--u-Hh-Nkul0.html

Taking it out on the water is a totally different experience than purchasing a standard boat. I really been thinking about this as a winter project in my garage. I have been a builder for over 40 years in addition to an amateur restorer of a few old pickup trucks including the standing and body work. Thanks again it's appreciated and a beautiful boat !

Very cool!! I think it will be a great project and look forward to seeing your build progress. I have thought about building their Southwest dory as an electric cruiser boat. I also love their little teardrop trailer. I decided to simply upgrade my existing 20’ 1985 StarCraft pontoon boat with new seats and a new ePropulsion navy 6.0 outboard instead. ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jlGmuyWaKQY.html ) However, simply updating an old boat can be a lot of work. I probably have 150 hours in simply removing the carpet and painting the deck, sanding and painting the side rails and installing the outboard and new seats. So, 250 hours for a BRAND NEW BOAT is really not much more work than simply retrofitting an older boat. Thanks for letting us tag along for the build!!!

Great vid, WTBG! CLC is not competing with Lund or any other boat supplier; they provide kits for boat/canoe/kayak people that want not only pride in ownership--but pride in building their own boat. The quality of their materials and workmanship (fit of parts) is the best in the business. It's impossible to place a value on the experience of building your own boat, but it has to be at least equal to the cost of the kit and materials to finish it. And because you built it, you will already know how to maintain and repair it. If you love the look of varnished wood on the water and cannot afford a vintage Chris Craft--this is the way to go. Their canoe and kayak kits are superb as well.
