I’m taking the wait and see approach on anything and everything about AI. It’s one of the greatest creation of man, it is a benign technology but in the wrong hands, it can do damage more than help to humans. In terms of fashion, I think it will not replace the creativity/inspiration of the designing part, but the craft and the skill to turn the design to life will where AI will be inevitable. But nowadays, nothing surprises me anymore.
Having attended two different fashion design schools myself, I will admit that the idea of ai curated fashion a bit off putting. However, I feel that the world is also a bit bored with this whole ugly is edgy kick that some human fashion designers have been on as of late…Balenciaga, I’m side eyeing you. 😅
I have a degree in fashion design and these AI generated designs makes me think wow I have put my money to waste 🙃, the design industry is hard enough to make your name in and competing against this… I jus don’t know. Great informative video btw! ❤
I love the point about past resistance to technology because I think it was always hard for us to imagine why people would fear the internet and all the changes that would come with it. Also great point made about fashion designers evolving into 'prompt engineers'. I believe that humans benefit from being creative so it seems wrong to reduce human involvement in the creative process to just inputting, reviewing and refining.
❤❤❤wow, this is a lot to take in, Cassie. Fashion is very unpredictable sometimes. Sometimes we love it and sometimes we’re at OMG stage. Thank goodness nothing is forever. We can always move on to the next best thing. 😉👍🏻
Cassie, i just wanted to tell you - thoroughly enjoyed this video (not that I don’t enjoy them all lol) but this topic was particularly intriguing. Coming from Malaysia, it will be a looooong time till AI starts affecting our fashion industry. Hope to learn more as AI in fashion develops!
I love how well-researched your topics always are. ❤ The use of AI is really interesting and I’m very curious to see how laws will catch up with the issues you mention around not only IP theft but using the likeness of others. Like the Pope photo - it was only a jacket in this instance, but a more sinister photo could easily be generated. It’s a slippery slope…
@@CassieThorpe I came across some Emma Watson ones by accident trying to find BATB outfit stuff. a Child could EASILY find it and they only tweak the facial features slightly hoping not to get sued, since it's in HD but use the real person's name and from thumbnail alone it LOOKS realistic, slight tweaking or not. Most people would assume it was real especially employers. They also listed prominent youtubers as having vids and you could request ANYONE. So a rando stalker could request any one of us with a social media account. Just type any celebrity and deepfake and it usually pops up, they never consented to be in this material it's immoral.
@@seabreeze4559 thank you!! I couldn’t think of the word for deepfakes when I left that comment lol! Yes this is such a massive issue - in addition to the other issues you mentioned, politically weaponizing AI images is another huge problem.
Don’t think I’ve ever been this early! Loved this new video…. I had no idea some of these weren’t even real they’re so good!!!!! I thought Jacquemus was for real bags driving in Paris 😅
Will you be doing a video on fendi & Marc Jacobs collection?? I didn’t even realize they were collaborating for S2023 🤔🤷🏾♀️ this makes me happy Fendi my favorite brand besides Dior 😊
Technically AI is still a manipulated by the human aspect of what we perceive a style to be based on human experience. It is still completely subjective and yes, I agree the fact that AI doesn’t take into account textures and fabrics will make sure humans within the fashion industry don’t lose their jobs. I think ethical dilemmas will be had when we have people creating AI engines for products/ styles that don’t have the background in knowing the design history do styles and providing the prompts.
At the end of the day, like all technology: it is has potential for good and for evil, and human beings will deploy it for both purposes. There will be ramifications in both directions. As far as employment, there's also a traceable trajectory: technology has always put human beings out of jobs, but created others (I will say, I do think technology has made us lazier and the loss of human skill is evident; even in fashion. Places like France where "metiers" and artisans are protected by government is a rarity, which makes me think that new forms of workforce protectionism in European haute couture & other creative industries will also emerge.
It seems like a separate art form to me. Ideas can be generated with AI, but how does it translate into wearable products? It seems like an interesting rabbit hole to explore, but not practical in reality. Jmo.
With AI... it is more of the question of ...just because we can do it, should we do it? I do believe having a disclaimer when something is generated by AI. Also, does it really create or is it based on the person inputting the information and then the history the AI uses but is not coming with an actual original idea??? It is definitely something to discuss. Cheers!
Interesting topic. Personally I’m against AI because of the concern surrounding people losing their jobs and losing the concept of human connection. I am fine if society starts to move towards AI but I think that would force us to go into a more socialist government. There will be devastating job loss across all fields so how do we survive as a species if we can’t find a job to pay expenses?? I know it sounds a bit dramatic but those are my initial thoughts. I’ll have to do more research on this topic but my brain is so resistant to this idea hahahaha
Personally don’t understand the appeal of AI fashion. Fashion is art and it’s even better because you live in it not just look at it. How can you live in something that doesn’t physically exist. This is for all that “do fashion” for social clout not for those who want wearable art. I’m a marketer and work on fashion marketing posts/blog @thefashionreach and am preparing a research piece on AI Influencers!
I do agree that it could push creativity further but considering that for now the AI just acts as a tool that creates a “patchwork” design from the already existing data it collects- if there is no new data how can it evolve? Curious to see (and slightly terrified!)
I’m a software engineer 👩💻 with a masters in engineering, and took courses on AI, algorithms, machine learning in engineering grad school! AI is growing too fast and all jobs, even mine are at risk, unless we learn to control it, tweak it and have checks and boundaries in place! Can it replace human creativity? - no, because the best masterpieces came from a place of raw pain and AI or chatGPT cannot emulate or feel pain- but it’s super annoying to have your work stolen or worse- replaced! My 2 cents, Amy
I’m a graphic designer Cassie, and I see nothing but problems coming from this AI. I had a discussion with my hubby who is a doctor, which will affect the medical industry too, not just artists and designers only . They are killing Creativity for Humanity. I think AI will be controlled very soon, only a few rich, more powerful people will only have access to it. Very interesting topic you brought today. Love your videos as always ❤❤❤❤❤❤
If doctor still practicing only old doctrine installed western medicine, controlled by design by Big Pharma, there is no future for them! There are already med beds. Are they av to public , not yet. Why because they suppressed by those who dont want you to ever heal. They want to treat you forever! Med beds are healing any disease, disorder, and more, something like repair your DNA, and age you back. There is enough wealth in the world, for everyone have at least minimum. Equality? Absolutely not! But everyone can have happy minimum, and for some its absolutely enough…. And this system is coming. Nesara quantum financial system, will change everything for the better.😉
I think the big issue is do we no longer own the rights to ourselves, meaning our voices, our bodies, our faces if we post an image on the internet. Not saying we don’t already forfeit those rights but to blatantly be used for monetary gain without knowledge is a bit scary. Nonetheless I would not want to hear or see myself under someone’s “project” I do not know
It’s a slippery slope at the moment around the AI issues. Writing scripts, & AI generated movie stars, models will be obsolete etc etc it’s a bit scary. I think there needs to be regulations around certain aspects.
The AI discussion is so wild, I am interested to see where things go, throughout all industry. I did have a strong reaction to Levi’s using AI “models” to increase diversity 🥴 Ummm please hire real living diverse models please!!! It seems like it’s a two steps forward, fourteen steps back with representation 😔
Regulation and disclosure is a must!!! Can you imagine the level of false narratives, decrease in value of trained skill and education, identity theft…..yikes
I think AI is a pretty polarising topic, in my view AI has been more problematic in the art world because of how it can easily replicate people's art styles so it's interesting how it is being applied in fashion
the ability to make any celebrity (or youtuber) or politician 'be seen' wearing literally anything and placing them at any event they never attended is about to go bad fast.
An interesting and polarizing conversation...not just in the realm of fashion, as you pointed out. I am of the 'let's wait and see' POV. I hope that it doesn't go too far, and as some have said, override or 'kill the creativity of humanity'.
This sounds stupid but I think AI is still missing that human element that won’t lend it to fashion well. I love learning the reason behind a collection…what personal elements of their history, the brands history, their interests has the designer put into their work. Trying to put a “memory of a beach holiday I did with my parents when I was six” is hard to generate in AI. It can feel disconnected, the designs look cool but that’s about it. I think AI has blasted onto the scene and we are still understanding it’s limits and ability
I'm wondering what is the point. For example a designer now having to type out a description using words instead of just sketching it? It seems too cumbersome to use words where drawing would actually seem faster and easier. I don't see it having longevity in luxury fashion. Maybe fast fashion where alot of the design is repetitive. It is a little terrifying though.
Hey Cassie, great video! 😄 It's funny because I was recently talking to my friends about AI taking over everything. Loss of creativity and jobs is one of the biggest concerns in my opinion.
IP theft is the least of what people should be worried about. Free AI text generators will make coding Malware wicked simple, particularly DDOS attacks, and Ransomware. If I were an investing sort I would throwing money at every CyberSecurity Startup I could find. As for AI Fashion Designer let them live that best virtual life, poor kid just didn't want to be a Market Forecaster like Dad 😎☕💋
Thank you so much for this video Cassie! I am actually writing an essay about AI and fashion so this was useful…. Wait or is AI going to write this essay for me? (Just kidding but honestly wtfff that can also be done! 😳😂😂)
One of the things I do like about AI fashion is ideally a reduction in fashion waste. Especially for those who buy clothing just to show on platforms like Tick-Tock rather than going out and about.
My laundry machine has AI technology in it, I plan to incorporate more AI in my lifestyle, I don't see it as a threat, if we treat AI with respect and use it as it should be used, there should be no problem, it can save people time, money, things are faster done, which means more free time for yourself, your family, etc, I have seen clips of AI music songs, it's really good.
Great topic Cassie! Don’t let ChatGBT get a hold of it, else it may do a better job than designers themselves. As been shown in the story of the success of a pastor who used it to write a sermon and had the congregation moved in tears. Food for thought 🤔
Whatever AI produces has to be validated. For the product descriptions example I think it can help as it can speed up the process without eliminating the need of a human. In creative fields it's difficult because of what you mentioned. It can help with ideas but that 'help' is also a limiting factor in a way as it pushes you in a certain direction and then you're kinda tunnelled into it without realising.
Loved this video Cassie! I am not a huge fan & can't seem to understand the hype after AI LOL However, you made some very valid points. It can def spark creativity in some but it can also take away the idea of being creative! 😅 The copyright or plagiarism is also something that I am seeing the most within this new 'trend' We def need to adapt to the technology changes but I do not like the way that is is taking away the human touch. 🤷🏼♀️ Old soul over here 😃
THIS VIDEO IS SO GOOD!!! As a designer and seamstress I can appreciate the AI for seeing the idea but like you said this pushes what fabrics can be used to create such looks. Most textiles can do more than we think. I imagine that an AI is created from the creativity of the human mind and the description of one’s thoughts… But it definitely pushes the bounds
I definitely think all AI-generated work/images should be labelled as such, for the sake of transparency. As for the IP aspect as relates to fashion, I don't know a lot about it, or about paying royalties/licensing, but I've seen many large brands ripping off the Chanel quilted bag look or the Chanel tweed jacket, for example; other designers have said they've been heavily influenced by the work of specific peers; we continually see 50s, 60s 70s 80s "revivals", copying the hot designers of that era. So, it's hard to say if IP regarding AI would be a thing, considering designers are already influenced by what they see.
I don't envy the young anymore. The brave new world they will inherit & inhabit may become a very hostile place. AI could evolve to a point where it can't be controlled or regulated & therein lies the problem. Like Frankenstein, AI is a human creation we may come to deeply regret. Especially, if it turns on us.
I really enjoyed this video. So many issues to consider. I don’t fear AI as a tool; I fear what the human race will do with it. Undoubted there are amazing things that can be done with AI, but humans always manage to screw things up!
fashion design specifically is a breeding ground for this as clothing design isn't protected presently so quickly AI will be replicating people's ideas/concepts and there isn't much designers can do to stop it. maybe this will finally get us to a point where fashion design is protected in some aspect. I think AI is brilliant for structural reasons regarding our industry I just don't want AI when it tempers with creativity. it's one thing we can claim.
I have so many thoughts on this! In terms of jobs, anytime there's an advancement in technology people lose their jobs or industries are significantly reduced or wiped out. It will be interesting to see how this impacts the photography industry because if you can use AI to create an image, why would you use a photographer (and all the other roles involved in a shoot)? I think AI should be regulated because the distinction between real and AI is important and they're not the same. However, if they create the same end result then I can see the need for distinguishing the difference reducing or even if you have to state something is AI it will be treated the same as the non-AI version.
From my understanding the brain process of designing an outfit without AI is very different to designing with it, you mentioned the person even described it as easy. However, I think there's something important in the creative process and whatever the brain goes through to come up with ideas. That thing is now being reduced to a basic input output process. In terms of democratising fashion as much as that can be great there's also negative implications. Technology making a repetitive, laborious task easier is so different to technology reducing the need for people to think, create and come up with ideas.
Hi Cassie! Wow I had no idea that this even existed in fashion, but maybe I should have. AI seems to be everywhere now. Interesting, and informative, thanks Cassie.💕☺️🇨🇦
_No one complains when a rich dude shows off his car collection, so don't complain when a hard working woman shows off her bag collection the channel_#xbagy
The Tiffany x Nike collab is such a good example of how AI designs can really really work. I think the real rub of AI art is that it, by definition, removes all artistic context because it's just algorithmically generating an image based on other images; nothing original. Collabs, however, don't really need artistic context, they just need to look like a visually interesting mix of two brands primarily in order to make money. AI couldn't be more perfect for creating Brand x Brand, especially when the real Tiffany x Nikes were bland compared to the AI renders.
Omg, when I saw the Jaquemus ad campaign with the purse buses/cars I was so confused!👜👛Confused yet amused and intrigued, as well. I had no idea it was A.I-generated, let alone knew that there existed such a thing as "A.I Fashion Week"! What?!
Video idea for to consider- a video fully done by AI, where you type in descriptions and what you want it to be and see if the text and vibes and images it generated would match you style? I saw some lifestyle RU-vidrs do it and would be curious how it would translate to this type of content? X
The movie industry was talking about doing this for/to Bruce Willis. Several years ago a commercial product super-imposed Humphrey Bogart and a few other famous actors into commercials, and if I remember correctly that started a bit of a fire storm. I can’t remember the product.
I hope that we'll have some actual laws that will finally decide what AI can and cannot replicate. It could make our life on Earth better, and help us when it comes to difficult and dangerous jobs, or help us with difficult surgeries, but it could also make this planet a little big more boring, taking away all of the creativity, which would be such a shame.
