Since the entire situation can be summarized as "Euroleague teams are not investing in their youth teams", Euroleague itself needs to establish either rules or a foundation for young players to emerge into the starting rosters. For example, mandate that a minimum of X players under the age of 21 must play a minimum of Y minutes each season. Or create a youth Euroleague championship (like UEFA has its youth league) where all Euroleague teams must play players under the age of 21. There clearly are ways around this, it's up to the people in charge to make the necessary changes to fix this issue.

That is a very problematic rule. I was a U16 player when I started playing for the senior team in Croatia Second Division. The rule at the time stated that atleast one U18 player had to be on the court at all times for both teams. The rule led to alot of talented players taking it easy with their training because they were guaranteed playing time no matter what. Plus it lead to bad basketball (“Leave the kid to shoot and help” or “Always attack the kid on defense”). The rule was abolished in 2016 I belive, and even though Croatian basketball is ridiculously bad, disorganized, under financed and having less and less players and teams by the year, young players have to earn their playing time. I belive even the first division had the same rule, though it wasnt U18 but U20.

it is not only the Euroleague teams who does not have place for young players. Tier 2-4 international clubs does not have place for young people as well. It is a cancer for our basketball, basketball clubs owners lives in some kind of delusion, if you have club who does not even have fans, no one attends your games at Thursday evening and you still waste insane amount of money for some players who has not future instead of letting young's to play..

legit concerns for Euro basketball as you state in the video, but as an American living in Asia and watching Euroleague, NBA, Asia leagues, etc. I feel the systems for development are so much more established in Europe at the moment. The next crop of players might look at NIL in the NCAA as an opportunity, but as been pointed out by people in the US less and less college players from the NCAA are league ready. The system and rule set of the NCAA are far from the NBA or of FIBA which has always been their weakness. Long story short going to the NCAA can give short term monetary gains, but might actually harm young player's overall trajectory if they are elite.

France may have 7 times the population but it's club basketball and basketball league is way less developed than Greece's. Greek clubs have won 19 European trophies, the majority (10) being top-tier, while French clubs have won 11, only 1 top-tier, 3 2nd-tier and the rest 3rd and 4th-tier. I think the NCAA might actually be good for europe. Young talent will leave yes but in average it will grow more than in euroleague exactly because they will have more playing time and either way almost no youngster actually plays at the moment. they will then come back at 23/24 and have played in duke or florida instead of some random third league in turkey

Yes it is doomed because the game cannot attract funds the way it is. In euroleague the regulation is too old for the new fan base around the world. In the nba the players are above everything, in Europe we re having a fan base coming from football. 3” on defence in the paint must change and also bigger courts more open spaces. Euroleague must change also the final four competition to a 3 or 4 wins to get the title, the best wins

This is an easy decision for rising talents like Lamelo or Alex Sarr to hit the NBL because the games actually prepare them for the NBA. Balls can't be knocked off of the rim like in Europe and you don't have to put the ball on the floor before you take a step. It makes sense they would elect to be where the game style is most suitable for where they are heading. ✅
@Kevinjimtheone
@Kevinjimtheone 2 месяца назад
The only reason any player is picking the NBL over a Euroleague team is language or pay. Also, the NIL is indeed a bit threat, but it is also highlights a massive pain point of European development: younglings simply don't get enough time. Teams should play their youth, especially their promising native youth, as much as possible. Especially since they have their national league that they also have to play in. Furthermore, I wish Euroleague would have a rule of playing young players to force teams to invest more resources in them. We can't continue to be short-sighted and only follow short-term gains.

Also olympiakos who has win now mentality but also a low budget develops a lot of young players, papanikolaou was developed from young. Panathinaikos last season played a lot of young players when they were losing like kalaitzakis, kostas ante and papagiannis. So it is possible but difficult to win the title with youth

Comrade. Main problem here is that will NBA and NCAA destroy-degrade quality of european players. Young european players shows it superiority and dominance over college US players during past 10 years. NBA wants to stop that trend. The easiest way for that is to bring the best european talents to the US during their very young age and make of them US mentalllity and US basketball knowledge players. It will bring on top again strainght and athleticism and turn down brain. I am watched a lot of videos where NBA analyst saying that NBA loosing audience, NBA loosing number of views per game, loosing TV share against other sports in US: NFL, Hockey, Soccer,... Their explanation for that is domination of europan palyers in NBA, domination of european style of play against US style, based on athleticism, atractivines, speed,... The most of european players are smarter then US players but they play slow unatractive basketball. NBA wants to use their talent and basketball IQ and make of them US NBA players. Sorry because of awful English.

You are catastrophizing indeed. I mean, sure the best prospects will always choose the NBA and maybe a few more draftable but not quite lottery-worthy players might move to NCAA, but I think that there is plenty of talent remaining in Europe and most importantly, what makes European players great is not just the talent itself, but, also, the high stakes' experience in title contention and that winning mentality which you exclusively feature as a negative. I think we'll be fine.

Euroleague has great basketball and crowds, but it doesn't have the explosive marketing power that American sports do (or European football, for that matter). These days even the WNBA is possibly becoming more popular than the Euroleague, because of the explosive marketing power of Caitlin Clark. I guess that's the advantage of a superstar-focused sports culture - it translates to finacial success, and therefore to more stability and a more certain future.

I think its a little overreactive. The NIL will benefit maybe 10% of the European talent and they would go probably D1 anyway in majority of the cases. G League is trash and mostly Americans will occupy the best paid spots. Australia is not concern, Ball and Sarr were exemption not rule. Level of competition there is so much lower than in Europe as well as the salaries. Japan and China might be different story. They can attract the US talent that is not NBA material through money and exposure. Yet there is still many highly talented players playing around the world or leaving college, that will be attracted by playing in Euroleague. Also there is a lot of talent within the national leagues itself in countries like Spain, Italy, Greece, Germany. Euroleague teams just have to figure out how to more effectively develop talent while maintaining the win now mentality and reliance on experienced players (nothing wrong with that).

However the Euroleague with their system of making national leagues mostly irrelevant because winning a national championship has no effect on Euroleague participation (unlike in football with the UCL) has done a lot to starve the national leagues of cash and prestige. There needs to be a proper agreement between the Euroleague and the national leagues because the Euroleague can't survive on its own. It's the glittering roof not the foundation. The foundation are their national leagues and not just the top divisions but also the 2nd, 3rd division...

Also its true that all big names are now over 30. No young players and if one appears once in while the next year goes to the NBA. There is no space for everyone in NBA, so they just gonna get better and come back, i dont see any problem with that. And the ageing is it really the problem? Euroleague is still TOP quality basketball, and many veterans who will finish career soon or later, dont worry its not the end.

I'm not so sure. Does really half quality players from college or development clubs in Europe really have some great talent to save us.For exempl Wemby played in Asvel one or two seasons,and he left to Metropolitan 92 and increase his value.Similiar with Risacher.Topic was in Mega and after going to the Crvena zvezda his value dropped from top 3 picks to top 8 or even top 11 pick.Plus is there any club who is wiling to give a young prospect 1 milion plus dolars or euros? I think not and I hope basketball will do better marketing with some addition of the euro players who are in their 24-28 years and boost competition. I hope you are alright but I'm really scared beacous Bartomeu,Glikman and Paulius are not some great owners beacous vice president of NBA is Joe Dummars and some other players who are successful in business.

All these examples of basketball growing globally and increasing opportunities (also) for European players to develop and make career as a player are inevitably increasing the talent pool as long as basketball appears as an appealing option for kids to play and invest their time in. In short term, there might be setbacks in recruitment, but I don't think European basketball can regress as a whole in a time when the player production is this good. The clubs, leagues, associations and less organised basketball communities just have to cherish the culture we have, because the opportunities are still huge and the club culture is still our biggest asset. Pretty much like how South American football is still strong, competitive and culturally unique even if Libertadores has been facing similar stagnation for decades when compared to club competitions of other continents.

Ridiculous video. Every year the European basketball is dying, every year it's the last good year. Enough, can't you see that this was the best season we had in a while? And why did this happen? Because a lot of teams invested and got talent. Euroleague shouldn't be afraid of NCAA or CBA or even NBL. They are competitors and of course, they may narrow the player pool but Euroleague should just retain its prestige and the whole conversation is over. Euroleague MVPs almost every year for the last decade were leaving for the NBA, that's not new. Players do age, but people also come back to Euroleague (Hezonja, Satoransky, Abrines, Mirotic, etc) The "win now" mentality is one of the biggest factors that help European basketball stay at this level, every fucking game matters, hell every play matters. That's the intensity we bring out here, and if that is too much for any player they shouldn't be here, LaMelo Ball for example, wouldn't last a week in a club like Red Star or Zalgiris (and not because of their skill level). Bottom-line, Euroleague's on the right path, and if it needs to do something, is just create a plan to expand locally and increase the budgets of the teams. No NBAzation is required. Stop catastrophizing.

I agree almost 100%. Competitor to EL is NBA, because the salary gap is absurd, but let’s not forget that NBA rules incentivise to collect top talents in top bodies, but not necessarily they get the top 450 skilled players of the world. De Colo for example to me is/was one of those, as Spanoulis, among best basketball players of the world but trailing in NBA because of physical limitations (and not will to be a just another rotation player). The only concern I have is on current EL administration that is looking to big markets like NBA (Paris, London, Dubai), but with 0 basketball tradition; this is an epic fail because at this game NBA will always win. So EL should instead be the DAC for audiophiles in basketball, rather than Spotify
@archer_twentytwo
@archer_twentytwo 3 месяца назад
@@ema2kolfiz828 Well said! Really good remark regarding the difference between skilled players and NBA material players. Truth is that EL admins try to compete with the NBA but it's hopeless, we can't and shouldn't try winning them on marketing. Let's stick to our own product and culture. It is clear that the heart of europe's basketball is its passion. Neither fancy cities nor fancy individual plays.

To add to this, they are hypothesizing that all the new spots will attract the best European talent. But the US is huge and there are many hoopers that would also compete for those spots and if they did not get spots in college or g-league, they'd come to Europe so at the end of the day, its all good. Euroleague has aging players cause they can afford to do so. For example, PAO and OLY compete in EL but they also compete in the Greek Domestic League. Most of their young players are loaned to other teams within Greece to get playtime. Whoever shows promising results, they bring them back and give them minutes to play in the Greek Domestic League. If they show progress, they will give them EL game time. That is literally how Sasa Venzenkov got devoloped, Dinos Mitoglou, Kalaitzakis, etc. The league is fine, it will always be competitive since there is a huge fanbase behind most teams.

Bro I can agree with you totally, quality of Euroleague are rising, more clubs with almost equal quality and lot of games on one ball, while in NBA, NCAA, and similar leagues you have games like exibition. Luka Dončić said that he have harder time in EL than NBA because in EL you have stronger defence in front of you, and only mentally strong players can have succes in europe. Nikola Topić would be played more for Red Star if he didn't has problem with injury, and he's still 18. To play EL you must have quality and be mentally strong and stable.

From my point of view you are posing a legitimate set of argues and scepticism regarding euroleague context and future. But as far as I can see, euroleague will expand in terms of prestige and geography, euroleague is escalating and so does european basket, fusing material from abroad, integrating without losing its identity. In our continent basket preserves its team-effort character, without spoiling any excessive personal talent. Finally, as you already mentioned in your video, in european basketball, as in any other renowned team sport, there is a major x factor; its fan base. Neither in the NBA nor anywhere else such a major factor exists and I believe will never appear. Team sports are its fans, without them the outcome is closer to ceremony rather than actual game. PAO fan!

also the issue with the euroleague is the closed system. There should be a place in european comps for teams who play well domestically. Theres no incentive for most european teams to win if they know they wont make it to the Euroleague anyway. The Euroleague should suspend all licenses and be fully willing to let smaller clubs in if they win. If the big teams cant win it only motivates them to improve their team more.

European basketball must grow together and not differentiate itself into 4 different competitions. This development is ridiculous. FIBA and Euroleague must settle their dispute and a national championship must once again be linked to the right to start in the highest european Competition. For example, FIBA could link the country points for places in international competitions (World Cup, Olympics, etc.) with the slots in European club basketball. For example: Best European Country in the FIBA World Ranking = 4-5 Slots in the highest European Club Competition. We also need a functioning and healthy financial fair play. Sure, thats probably just stupid ideas. But any idea is better than an expansion to Dubai. ❤️🏀

I think the level of overall basketball will improve but nba is not for everyone , and kids after college will eather go to the g league (kuz rarely a top tier tallent stays in ncaa for longer than 2 years) , plan b is euroleague or any other league debending on the offers , plan c they fell off and the money they got from ncaa broke a few screws loose (it is a possibily , remember liangelio ball and china situation , you dont have to be smart to play basketball in collage) While yes developing young players in top euroleague teams is a problem with them not gettin enough playing time and experience , the mid and lower teams could do that and develop they're players nicely , sure they wont stay for long , but the team will get more exposure bringin team some money from endorsments . Overall opion it will impact where young players will go to develop their game , but only strong and detirment will survive , the rest will really have to stay humble and take classes on how to not be stupid with all that money they will be getting. And EuroBall will never die , and top stars that do go to nba wont mean they will be a good fit (too much to name but sasha vezenkov is a recent example) and eventually come back to europe

European basketball holds a major advantage that we "inexplicably" overlook (cause we have come, and some have found it convenient, to believe that there is no alternative), and this neglect is the root of all our problems: an incredible, vast network of teams and leagues that has fueled the sport for years with abundant talent and passionate fans. Clinging to a traditional closed league model spells certain decline, if not outright disaster. We're simply shooting ourselves in the foot (especially in countries like Lithuania, Greece, and the former Yugoslavia, which lack the robust school systems and financial resources of powerhouses like Spain or France)

There's a couple of things in this video that are not correct. 1. NIL is only for domestic(meaning USA Players). So that means that international College players actually don't make money off of NIL. At least not yet. 2. Players have been getting paid for NIL since 2021, what's at stake in the courts in the US right now is whether or not player can get paid DIRECTLY by the schools. And thats not a done deal either because it still hasn't been approved in the courts. Blessings!

You are catastrophizing, and a lot :) The problem with NBA is that it is still "closed system". What ever grumps about to many international players in NBA are, the fact is that it is still hard to enter NBA and that it can do only the best of the best, and that even of those that enter only several get the respect they deserve. And it will be even more "closed system", especially at coledge level, where you have traditions, where who and where your parents went to coledge matters more than anything esle, etc. There will be for sure increase in talents going early into USA, but I don't think it will be significant increse at all, because that "big money" would mostly go to home young talents, athletic looking Afroamericans that can be comercialized in market early, while foreigners would not have such generous offers, nothing that Barcelona or Real Madrid could not top up if needed... And there is still that moment where internationals in NBA are not being given minutes, and that will be the big no-no for many to venture there, at least until they win everything in Europe, like Vasilije MIcić, for example, and again, he went to NBA with guaranted minutes to play, and they tricked him, so if he was not transphered from Thunder to Hornets, he would return to Europe to play for several millions less, but to play. Same treatment, if not even worse, will be on coledge level, where it is not important to put the best talent on the court, but the most sounding name, so the fun base can have recognizible reason to cheer and buy tickets... And for Aisan and Oceanian leagues, I will ask you just one question: Do you remember who Miroslav Raduljica is? We called him once upon a time The Gods Hand. Then he went to China league in 2017. Do you know where is he now? At Maroussi -- google it... Once NBA player and Euroleague legend called The Gods Hand, and in that time one of my favourite players, literary diminished as player playing with small Chineses in no quallity leaugue... Now ending in no name Greek team... He went to China for bigger money, and ended palying for no money. Today no seriouse player would allow himself that path, at least not in it's prime, because if you want to stay among the best, you must play among the best, so players are today aware that Asian leagues are one-way thickets, and that there is no easy, if any, return back to premier leagues once it is done... So it is good retirement plan, but total catastrophy for young talentet players that just started to seek development and affirmation... That prospect will not draw many talents, if any at all, at best it will maybe pull some scrambles that couldn't find their place in leagues that matters. So, the future is not that bleak, and you touched one very important reason why NBA can pay their players millions: it is not because there are best players in the world, but because they have much much higher ravenue return on the market. Bigger ravenue, more money for player's contracts. WNBA has that problem, they want the same payment as in NBA, but there is simply no ravenue return for such contracts. So Euroleague needs to find a way to increse their ravenue on the market if they want to parry NBA, it is simple formula, but still not the formula for talents, just for player sallaries and eventual atraction of established players. Take for example Serbian or Lithuanian national basketball leagues -- they play for peanuts (and not today but for last 30-40 years) in comparison to Spain ABC (not even trying to compare it to NBA money...), but still have steady production of great quallity players through the year, and even the greatest world players. Jokić didn't went to american coledge, nor did Sabonis... Nor did Aleksa Avramović, developed as player in small Serbian town Čačak where they pay their players in products, because they literary don't have any money (I am caricaturizing a little, but KK Čačak 94 literary survives from year to year only thanks to volunteering efforts of variouse people), and then he came out of nowhere and made a fool of SGA that this year was top 3 candidates for MVP in the richest league n Earth... And would amerrican unicersity and coledge scouts dig up Aleksa Acramaović in his teen years in Čačak 94? Dream on, they literary don't know who is he even now, when he is fully developed player (but I have feeling they will learn first game on Olympics, the harder way :)

This is a double edge sword tbh. Young prospects could seek better development programs at NCAA and this would funnel Euroleague too, not only NBA (I doubt that anyone with no NBA future would pick G league over Europe). This mean that we are going to loose some young stars because of the easier process to be picked by NBA teams, but still this doesn't mean that Europe will left with no talented players, just more hidden or underrated talents. Just for the records there is a plethora of Greek players that started or drafted at NBA with limited or no minutes and thrive here, (Koufos, Fotsis, Kalathis, Papagiannis, Regias, Tsakalidis, Spanoulis, Printezis, and the list goes on with OG great like Galis, Fasoulas and Giannakis).

I think euro league needs to keep selling the quality of the actual basketball. I like the nba but I’m so tired of all the stoppages, ad breaks, the 2.5 hour endurance event to watch an nba game that should take no longer than 60 mins, homogeneous strategies, over reliance on ISO plays, boring strategies employed by coaches that just end up with a crazy athletic play or a moving screen with 5 travels into a drive and kick for a 3pt play. Euroleague seems to correct almost all of these flaws in the nba, as well as having genuine fans who create atmosphere, not the DJ at the arena. I’m very keen to get into the Euroleague but kinda don’t know where to start and this video kinda discouraged me if the league is looking like it’s gonna take a huge hit and if all my fav players in the eventual team I choose to support will leave to go to college/nba. I think there is a growing discontent with the hysteria in nba media, the homogeneity in the league and their strategies and the pain of actually watching an nba game. I always look forward to the Olympics because the game is so much more beautiful but the competition is so lopsided. I just wish we could have great competition with international/euroleague rules and atmosphere 🙏 and I think I’m not alone in this desire

If there aren’t players younger than 25, then what’s the complaining about young players going away. Only few of those in NCAA will pass the draft stage. The rest can eventually be hired in euroligue, and if they push good money to entice the players, euro teams could have many of these players before 25 years old.
