This chart, made in 1869 by Charles Minard, shows the story of Napoleon's disastrous march to Moscow in 1812. It uses slope, colour, width, annotations and more to convey a complex story. Edward Tufte called it the best data visualisation ever made. That's a big claim. Whether it's true or not, it's a masterpiece and a wonderful entrypoint to understanding the power of data communication.
