The implication in the scene with Dr Jaeger is that at some point after Grisha was sent to Paradis, he broke under the grief of how both his children were lost and felt like their deaths (didn’t know Grisha actually survived) were his fault.
Grandpa Jaegar used to be a doctor, but he is a *patient* in that hospital. His daughter was murdered, and his son was executed (although we know he survived) all because he thought he did the right thing by not doing anything about the injustices done to his family; in fact, he may have even felt responsible for driving his grandson Zeke to go against his parents leading to his son's execution.
Falco and Colts uncle "Grice" was one of Grisha's medical patients. He was the same person who showed him his Patriot scar, who introduced him to the Restorationists, and was later eaten by his Titan comrades alongside him. The reason Falco and Colt became Warriors in the first place was to redeem their family name after being connected with the Restorationists, and to also not be deported to Paradis just like their uncle.
I think Eren's grandpa Jaeger is more of a mental patient than a doctor at this point, but the medical staff calls him by the Dr. title out of respect. Some of them may even know him from when he actually practiced medicine.
I wanna point out that in this series the most sympathetic Maryleans are the ones that live close to or interact eith Eldians on a daily basis, the fact Gabi is unironically friends with the interment camp guards really means that things are slightly getting better for Eldians in Marley. I forget where it was said but they mentioned that Eldians aren’t treated much better outside of Marley, meaning the treatment you see here is actually the nicest the world is giving them. Its still immoral but like Zeke is saying about the Tyburs if they pull this plan off they’ll be able to situate themselves in Marley’s society with the chances of growing out of their social status. Though given what we know its not like Paradis is going to let them steal the founding titan at this point. Also Eren just casually triggering his grandfather to maintain his cover is probably one of the underlooked darker moments of the series. Also to be clear, his grandfather is in fact a patient and not a doctor. He thinks he is, still dealing with delusions about his family.
The scene with Eren's Grandfather actually underpins a greater theme in attack on titan that is frequently overlooked. The idea of responsibility fueled guilt. Several characters express the idea, including Grisha, that things wouldn't be the way they are and going they way they are, if it wasn't for them. That they are solely responsibile for things. The story you started was used to describe Grisha at the end of Season 3. Yet we see here his father believes the same, that if he hadn't been so hard on his kids and been a better father, his daughter wouldn't died and what happened to Grisha wouldn't of happened. The show explores how guilt can drive people mad, and actually... they never were solely responsible for anything. Grisha didn't start anything, the restorationists existed before him, what had happened with them happened to Kruger too. Its a cycle of hatred and predujice that just breeds more shitty situations that people are just trying to survive. Only two things started anything, old Eldia for its conquest, then Marley for its adoption of the same tactics instead of breaking the cycle. Everyone else was just... caught in it.
@@unyieldingmonotony4453 I wanna point out Willy Tybur made a speech so impactful not only did it sway Eldians and Maryleans, but also people not native to Marley, despite the fact the person giving this speech is of the family that conspired with King Fritz to steal the 7 Titans. Despite the fact most of these people should hate him for having given Marley their major weapons ultimately they felt united under threat of the rumbling.
Reiner is truly the one character that in this show that has suffered the most both emotionally and financially like come on give my dude a break already
There is one character that I would argue has suffered more than anyone else can even begin to come close to, but as they haven't been properly introduced yet I won't go any further.
And the part about Erens grandfather thats not really wierd imo it made total sense. Yeah he may be a doctor but he clearly has issues.. he is filled with deep regret with what happened to his son Grisha. He also is torn from the fact that the day Grisha lost his sister were what set up the events leading up to his son Grisha and his wife being sent to paradise after their own son Zeke ratted on them. A true tragedy through and through.. I can only imagine how anyone else who is a parent would handle all of that...
FYI Dr. Jaeger IS a patient at that mental hospital (its alluded to by the nurse looking out the window and then running out to grab him). He's not a practicing doctor anymore. A lot of retired doctors are still addressed as "doctor" as a sign of respect. The implication is that Dr. Jaeger had a mental breakdown and went crazy over the grief of his daughter dying and his son being arrested and sent to paradis.
18:30 It's easy to see why everyone loves Willy. As we learned in Season 3, About 100 years before Season 1, The Eldian Empire was in charge. The Tyburs (Willy's family) somehow managed to get the King to flee to Paradis, freeing people all around the world from the Eldian Emipre. It's like if you saw the Grandson of Superman or Captain America or something. Even though he's an Eldian, he's seen as "Kin of our Saviors"
Eren's granddad IS a patient tho. He was a doctor in his normal life (you remember Eren's dad said he took over his father's clinic) so that's how his crazy-ass sees himself, especially since he is always in a medical facility.
There are sone small parts hunanizing the marleyans, with that inbread hatered, these 2 guards cheer for them, maggath knows how marley is shooting itself in the foot, People got to know willy, so they actually got to tollerate and like that eldian, the woman at the party protecting the kid. Wished we got more into that.
Pretty sure Erens grandpa is a patient. Being a patient doesn’t undo the years of practicing medicine and so I think they still respect him by calling him Dr.
I love these reactions to AoT out of everything! Most people always just immediately hated the Marley side I watched, but you're connecting with them I feel, and it's making this a lot more enjoyable! I only discovered this channel yesterday but I'm excited for the future reactions!
Omg sameeeee it honestly makes a difference when someone has the empathy you need to connect with the "other" side. You should check out LM Reactions if you haven't, they have similarly good reactions/discussion as PinkVapor :)
@@emmanuelucrosacosta1845 How can you be a doctor when you're a patient? He may have been a doctor once, but clearly not anymore. You can't help other people if you yourself are unwell.
A lot of people miss this: Magath was promoted to a general in this episode. “A demolition” means all the current military officials are too corrupted, so they all have to go. “Infested with rats” means there are conspirators among the government. Magath is onto something. Mans a genius
At 20:09 about. I like the English translation to this better. Gabi says "this is ice cream?" I believe. Meaning she's never even been able to have ice cream. Something others would take for granted.
Yeager is a patient now that "something weird" is his grandpa being traumatized by what happened to Grisha and (Faye ig) remember that is like a mental hospital too he's there cuz of his trauma but since he's a doctor he still wears the lab coat
Just found your channel today! Started watching some of your reactions and I was wondering about what you'd think of this episode. Then boom! You dropped the video when I hit refresh. :) Looking forward to the next one!
I think the reason Erens grandpa is still at the hospital is because hes well respected and can help patients, but also needs tending to because of his PTSD and guilt from seeing his daughter dead after being eaten by dogs. Thats why when Eren asked if he had regrets about his own family, he had some kind of panic attack from remembering what happened.
You mentioned that you binged this series. After season 4 episode 3, things pretty much move forward, with non-hinting flashback here and there. No more flashback for world building purposes. So, it's a good time to watch it back from the beginning, to catch all the subtleties. Like Reiner's and Annie's expression/face after battle to retake Trost. Or a good example is when Reiner talk to Bertolotolo to confess to Annie, on top of a tree, back in season 2. Something like "you're both short-lived murderers, who can understand better than ourselves?" Short lived, with 13 years of expiration date. Murderers. Forced by circumstances, oppressed by the armband and their blood.
Imagine not knowing Kruger is Eren and not knowing who Jeager is then seeing them have this conversation only to then realize that not only is this Eren freaking Yeager but that this is THE first time he meets his grandfather without them realizing they have a connection (at least on Mr. Jeager's part cuz Eren must know it was his grandfather based on Grisha's memories) Also I just realized (1 year later lol) that Jaeger doesn't even know of the existence of Eren Jaeger as his biological grandson (maybe of Eren Jaeger the founding titan but just that even though they share the Jaeger which should raise suspicions)
Dr. Jaeger went crazy because he thought it was all his fault and pretended to be a doctor to talk to Eren. That's why the woman said "Mr. Jaeger," since he's not really a doctor anymore, he's a patient. He stole doctors garments. At least that's my understanding.
I know reiner is her cousin but if I saw this show for the first time and I didn't know they were cousins I'd be thinking she's his niece or his daughter.
0:37 but...but...but if they just fix things and live in harmony what are we gonna do with the next opening(a good song) and the rest of the drama ahead?
