The Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI Express
I got this sound card more than a year ago because nearly everyone used to have one of these in their system. And so I thought it was a good idea to make a video about it. But on the surface the card is so empty that my first impression was that it had to be boring. And so I put off creating a video about it for a long time. But today is the day! My review of the Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCIE!

I used to be a fan of sound cards. I've owned a SB Live! 5.1, Auzentech Cinema 7.1, Onkyo SE 90, and Asus Essence STX. But then I moved to external DAC and sold all my cards. I still regret selling the STX though. I just bought this card for $15 to be used as microphone input since the realtek chip on my motherboard is broken. Nice video btw...

Thank you! I would love to get my hands on the Auzentech and the Onkyo! Auzentech is my secret love and Onkyo used to make excellent cards.

I had an old Celeron when I was a kid, time around 1999, I was 12. For me, a capable DirectSound soundcard was more important than voodoo accelerator. I was happy on 400x300 resolution and bad frames on Half-Life, but the DS sound were what made games back then. :D Love your channel Anton, hello from Türkiye!

Hi Afakkob Yab! Thank you for your comment! Ahhh yes the Voodoo with passtrough cable! I used to own one myself! But it somehow got lost during a move from house to house. Sadly! I still have a Soundblaster 2 ISA in the box! Would that satify your hunger for DS sound?

Back in the early days I had Creative cards in every system I built or owned. The SBLive and Audigy 1. They worked and worked very well. As for now, I use external dac/soundcards like MOTU, RME and Steinberg. Everything is always geared to gaming or low-end just enough to get you going stuff.

What experiences have you had with latencies? There is a program called latency monitor; Supposedly, the lower the latency, the fewer glitches and interruptions there will be while using the card. Being PCIEX x1, it should already have a good response in that sense. Maybe a typical user won't notice that as an advantage. But in recordings and streaming it is a critical factor.

The problem with multichannel PCI express X-Fi cards is that they all use the standard, low tier DAC and op-amps for the outputs. Even the Auzentech X-Fi Forte just uses good op-amp and DAC for the front two channels only... ...unless you go to Japan. There is one company that did a supposedly good implementation. The Onkyo SE-300PCIE has good analog multichannel outputs, but good luck finding one for cheap, or even at all, especially the first revision that was made in Japan (rev 2 was Malaysia). The price with shipping, taxes and import duties would enter the 200-300 euros area. Ouch.
@AntonsHardware
@AntonsHardware Год назад
Yes, the better opamps are always for the front channels. The rest get whatever is cheapest. I've been looking for those Onkyo's for ages, but their are very, very hard to find here in europe.

I agree with you on the overpowering trebles and the lack of bass, which is an issue most X-Fi and Recon3D cards share. But in its defense, this is a card geared towards gaming, and too much bass is often considered a negative as it obscures "important" sounds like gunshot and footsteps. Plus, most "gaming" headphones are tuned for trebles and mid-tones anyway, with very limited bass output. I think it does what it's supposed to, but for anything other than competitive gaming, there are better budget cards available.
@AntonsHardware
@AntonsHardware 2 года назад
I absolutly agree! For gamers it's better to not have a lot of bass. I normally mention this in my video's. But there are also a lot of people who use it in an HTPC setup or just listen music. So I want them to also know that the bass is missing.

So far every Creative soundcard I tried in the past 20 years was very overhyped and overpriced. I guess back in the day it was the only way to get "quality" sound for your PC without trickly connections but now that we have USB, why not just get a quality DAC from a proper audio brand?
@AntonsHardware
@AntonsHardware Год назад
I agree! Also Creative was the company that got the most support from game developers under MS DOS. If that was deserved is to be debated. After that they used the name for years to come and used it to create over hyped products. They still have an enormous amount of arrogance and think they are still sound card king. But they aren't anymore. People want plug and play audio and not fiddle around with drivers. Except for those nerds like me, who do like that. And that is where USB comes in and better manufactures.

Hello Anton, please tell me, when you testing sound cards in RMAA, what equipment do you connect to the line-in? I have an EVGA Nu Audio Pro and it has a good ADC. Will it be suitable for my tests of other sound cards? Thanks in advance.
@AntonsHardware
@AntonsHardware Год назад
I usually use the Creative G6, but I may vary. The EVGA Nu is a very good card to use! Please keep in mind that in order to get the best results, you have to do a weighted test. You will need a splitter cable for that. One end is attached to the line in of the EVGA and the other to a headset. That way the sound card has to do something and will results in real world results.

could u possibly incorporate a search for bass redirect/bass management in ur sound card vids im currently putting together a list of sound cards with this feature since theres sparse info of cards that do and dont have it one way u can test the cards u do have is by having a set of speakers plugged into the subwoofer out and just play a 30hz test tone to see if the feature is properly implemented
@AntonsHardware
@AntonsHardware 2 года назад
Wow... ehh... You mean the Crossover frequency? Or just if they have the functionality? I don't know a lot of sound cards that have that. I haven't seen that in a while. If I'm correct, the older Cmedia based cards by asus have that.

@@AntonsHardware if u go to ur sound blaster Z video at minute mark 4:32 u will see at the bottom of the menu the "bass management" u must toggle the "bass Redirection" for ur subwoofer output to play bass audio with non-LFE and/or stereo content like in ur browser on youtube the crossover slider is just a bonus with the new driver interface u can find it in playback/the gog icon next to "speaker calibration" and u must select "custom speakers" i think u must but definitely must to enable the crossover slider then u have to toggle ur front speakers as a non-full range speaker my onboard audio (alc4080 - realtek audio control) u just set the config to 5.1 surround and toggle either ur front or surround speakers to non-full range speakers then bass will be redirected to the subwoofer output but does not have a crossover i recently got a sound blaster Z and using the newest interface

Hello, I'm searching for an audio card for 5.1 sound (movies mainly and horror single player games), I'm kinda lost, the only think from specs I can compare is SNR... anyway I don't care about headphones, 2.0 audio or anything else, only 5.1 quality, I found Asus Xonar AE, Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Fx V2 and Creative Sound BlasterX AE-5 Plus (that one is used so I may miss the chance) , how would you classify them or should I check something else? I should say I like "flat / balanced" sound, the JBL LSR 305 are my favorite speakers paired with a focusrite scarlett 2i2 and 10" powered subwoofer (volume really low, just to add the necessary low end that's missing cause of the 5" speakers of LSR in low audio volume) , I'm not a "bass head", I just like good clarity and balanced sound, Thanks in advance!

I don't test for 5.1 compatibilty or that. Just headphones and 2.0 speakers! But what I do know about cards is that I love the AE-5! One of the better cards out there. The other two are also good, with the Xonar AE being my secret love.

@@AntonsHardware Hi i have mostly worked on OS X and modern macOS drivers, but i have also contributed to the kx audio driver which is also a windows driver (essentially it's a driver that can be compiled for windows or mac) and probably you have used it with the audigy 2, in the review video. i have noticed that, in one of the system settings windows, for the card properties it uses a name tag for the card that i have created for the kx audio driver. Mostly i like to get stuff to work on my old macs and my hackintosh machines, and to have them work better than they used to. I am now working at a new version of the kx audio driver for mac that adds support for multiple sound cards at the same time, for now i have tested it with 4 sound cards at the same time, but i am trying to all the way to 6, in theory it should work up to 16 sound cards at the same time. I have also just got a prodigy 7.1 hifi for my collection and i am working on adding support for it to the envy24ht mac driver, i have discovered that there are 2 different versions of the cards with different subvendor ids, so i had to add support for mine into the driver (i have also improved compatibility with 64 bit oses for the driver since it had a lot of assumptions made for 32 bit code, but that breaks for 64bits). For the prodigy card itself i don't have noticed none of the bad things you highlighted in the review, this leads me to suspect that you got a faulty card, perhaps some of the old capacitors are failing on yours.
