yeah _omggggggg_ that's reason enough for me by itself I *LOVED* how grimey and absolutely _fillllllthy_ this delicious synth can get in the right hands.❤🔥❤🔥✨
Well as delightfully quirky and mysterious as this instrument might be, I can see clearly that drone motors are expensive because this baby costs $3200.
it sounds like they got deadmau5 entire 2 million worth of synths including the bachlas in that box I wonder how incredible it would sound if you had four of them linked up
Very nice video. Thanks. I must say though that if the motor noise is happening within the audio signal path and not just physically "in the air" then the synth is practically unusable... unless you're making an album called "In The Dentist's Chair". 😉 Seriously though, if Game Changer (good company btw) can figure a way to get that noise out of the audio path completely, THEN they're on to something very cool indeed! Cheers.
you are hearing my microphone picking up the noise! it's close to non-existent when you record. Trust me I hate stuff like that too, and it's not noticeable a lot unless you heavily compress and crank the high end.
That's good news. I don't mean to be nasty, but you should have made that clear in the vid. It's important I think. Cheers and luck to you.@@MilesAwayOfficial
@@HeathcliffBlair in fairness, it probably makes more sense for you to assume that there isn't a show-stopping flaw in the sound output because he didn't mention one, instead of assuming that a reviewer has to declare every possible negative; "this synth is not made of giraffe flesh, you don't actually power it with smoked peanut oil and I did not have to get additional property insurance before using it... if you have any other questions about things that aren't wrong with it, let me know and I will confirm that they also do not apply, with my apologies for the infinite number of omissions in advance. this is a moral failing I'm sorry dad"
It sounds effin incredible.. but what I would want to use it for, the sort of pads you started off with, I could never successfully play with 4 voices. And then 3.5K aud. Hey, if it was 8 voices, I'd buy it even if it was 5K Aud.. cause it's so gorgeous sounding. Now THAT is warmth. The word has never fit better with a synth before. Goosebumps and chills to my core. But I could hear the note stealing with just the first intro you played, and that would drive me insane. If they produce one with 8 poly, I am IN. And just to be fair, the sort of pads and way I play, I can only *just* get away with 8 voices. Just. So even that would be a stretch, but doable.
That's fair critique! Voice stealing is definitely noticeable with 4 voices on anything. But something worth noting is that this synth is so bassy and in your face, having the voice stealing actually cleans up the mix a lot. No overlap.
Heh, was wondering the same. Perhaps a low-pass and high-pass in parallel? Both paths combined would still let all bands through, but you'd get the artifacts (such as resonance)
Like the other commenter said! All-pass filters don’t actually attenuate frequency amplitudes directly, but rather alter the phase relationship of frequencies across the spectrum. So you get this interesting resonance response.
I’ve owned the synth for about two months now. I am fortunate to own a lot of classics from a Jupiter 8 to a CS 80, as I bought the many years ago. I find the motor synth to be incredibly musical and deep. It’s got this wonderful vintage sound to it. It’s incredibly well built, and I find I can get lost in its musical capabilities. Take time to watch his videos. They’re fantastic. I wish all synth companies did this. It would increase their sales, and reduce frustrations. 😅
Every single synth part! The only non-Motorsynth things were the drums and the FX wooshes, scary vocal fx, and white noise crashes. Those were my samples. Motorsynth did everything else, with some effects and mixing in logic!
MotorSynth actually has a percussive patch bank, but it's never going to sound like a Ludwig jazz kit. More like how you can torture acid drum sounds out of modular gear with short bursts of white noise.
Demo 2 is probably my favorite thing I've heard from you thus far (though admittedly, I'm new here :D ) $3.3k is a big ask for me, and the ambient noise probably makes this impractical for my primary uses. But like all Gamechanger Audio stuff, *damn* is it cool. I don't think it's "overpriced," because it's mad science: the parts and processes are non-standard, so you can't really rely on the economies of scale that a Music Tribe can. Lovely.
Thank you so much! If you haven’t yet, watch my SYNTRX 2 demo, the jam is really similar vibes :) and I agree, the price for how much tech is there is really solid. You really need to like the experimental and raw side to go for this as your main synth but it’s wonderful
bro....this shit is almost 4k lmao. You're basically in Synth Flagship territory. The most I would pay for this would be 2k flat. Its been out for a while and a shame they still wont lower their price.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that for a boutique instrument (ie relatively low unit volume) with this build quality and the crazy, crazy amount of engineering involved, this synth is probably being sold at a price point that barely recoups. In the famous words of Steve Martin, if you can't afford something, don't buy it! I freaking love mine; it is completely unique among all other instruments. 0/10 buyers regret. But I'm also not poor. That's not a brag, just a factual bias.
The motors pumps the price so high that it's basically the rich kid's toy. For now. If the industry will continue to grow in that direction (i mean, where's Yamaha with their bike motos industry when we need it?), we will have some really innovative and fun new ways to play. I have a hunch that it's not going to happen this way but let's hope it will.
I mean its priced just like other boutique desktops: 3rd Wave, Super 6, Syntrx. It has such a unique flavor and so much incredible engineering, the price is high but its not something that is overpriced for what went into it imho
@@MilesAwayOfficial not overpriced at all, a lot of synths are just VST in the box for the same price, here we have novelty hardware so it totally justified
@@djkanyon that's the thing... it's not a novelty. It's a feat of modern engineering. If you write this machine off as a gimmick, just remember that television was widely panned as useless before there were shows being produced.
Not exactly! A Hammond Tonewheel has discs that can't vary in pitch, therefore speed, so each disc can only make one note. The motorsynth's motors are much more advanced so that's how they can behave like traditional oscillators (detune, gliding, changing pitch, modulating eachother etc)
Of course it sounds a bit diffrent, but i think for making music in general any sunyth will do. I am quite older than you and heard all synth from the 70 up today. At a certain point i lost the need to buy a synth because it has another color. The big revolutions a done. Analog; FM , and Wavetable and Additive. This synth here is too close to analog to be sensational.....but very passionate review. Thanks for your work.@@MilesAwayOfficial
Fair! I really do feel you get used to it but I can see how it would be annoying. There's a sleep switch to stop the motors when you wanna keep it on but not use it.
Yeah I reallly have some issues, you know that even when I hear my laptop fan going crazy on huge projects, I simply go and choose between going out of the room or crying in the kitchen .. so this one on me :|@@MilesAwayOfficial
Knowing from aquarium filters that if the waterflow is prohibiting the motor and thus does not cause much or any friction. Then a free spinning motor can outlast even the factory life expectancy by decades and that's even underwater with all sorts of buildup from algae and such, knowing the motors in the motor synth aren't experiencing much friction since they are optically read and do not have to move forward a vehicle for instance, also they are protected from dust, then I would say that they may even outlast any analog oscillator and if the parts are standard which is most likely the case since this is mass manufactured and not as boutique as they would want you to think, then they are even easier to replace than most analog synth parts.
I understand your concern but like the commenter below said there’s 0 friction, and it’s a controlled environment with no dirt or grime getting in. Also, the build quality of the synth is genuinely fantastic. Best built synth I own along with the OBX8 and 3rd Wave, so it inspires confidence
I love the potential for the conversations this synth will produce in the future. "yeah I know we're ready to jam gimme a second my synth needs to spin up"
Would using drone motors as oscillators make this the ultimate drone synth? Lol. Maybe the mk2 can have the props, gyros, GPS and remote control and it can literally be a drone synth! A synth and a drone all in one, so you can make drone footage and the music to go along with it with the same piece of gear! 😂
I was able to score a MkII for about half of the MSRP last year on eBay, and I haven't regretted it for a moment. It is one of the most possibility-expanding instruments I've ever encountered. I know that you prefer playing via MIDI but I'm surprised that I didn't hear you mention the clutch function. To me, this is just as radical an innovation as the morphing you see on PolyBrute or the expression keys on the osmose. It's the sort of thing that makes me wonder why all keyboards don't have a clutch.
What a fantastic deal! good for you. and I can also agree - even after posting this video I still love this thing. It played a huge part in a dark movie trailer piece I did. Super powerful and unique synth. Clutch is awesome! I didn't get good footage last time, but I will certainly show it off in a future video!
I used to do sample packs on my Patreon but I shut it down as it was more work than it was worth! My channel has grown a lot since then though, if I relaunch Patreon I will 100% make a sample pack of this
Lol joke, $3299 for this thing, why would you market this to a broad audience... Much less make a review without STARTING BY SAYING NO ONE THAT WATCHES. CAN AFFORD IT. 😂 no one will care if its proprietary. 👎 👎 👎
Just because you can’t afford it, it doesn’t mean it’s not interesting to learn about. A Jupiter 8 in 1980 was over $5000. With inflation, this synth is cheap. It’s such a shame that whenever a synth company comes out with a very innovative synth, many people start by complaining about the price. It prevents innovation. Buy what you can afford, and enjoy watching videos on anything that’s interesting whether you can afford it or not. Maybe one day, you will be able to afford it. Maybe one day, you’ll sell five of your other synths, or your dog in order to buy one expensive synth. It’s just a shame when people bog down the comment section with a bunch of complaints about the cost. It serves no value and takes away from productive comments. The inventor of this synth probably put three years of his life into this thing. Give him a break.
