Fire-rated LED downlights come in all sorts of colours, wattages and finishes. What about if you could get all of the available options in one unit. This is where the SpektroLED fire rated downlight from Knightsbridge comes in.
All you need is the lighting modules and then select the colour of the bezel and you then have 40 options in one unit.
In this SpektroLED review, we look at the key features from dimming to colour temperature and how to install with the new plug and socket connector.

A pain that you have to pull it out to change the settings - would have been better if it could be done externally, maybe by a timed sequence of switchon/offs, or by holding a magnet next to it. Or just use GU10s so the customer can change to whatever they like

Never fit integrated downlight, when they go wrong in 5 years time & the line has stopped production, you're stuck with either a light that doesn't work or one that is different to the rest. Better off with GU10 & the customer can change the lamp when it finally gives up.

plus the different beam angle, personally prefer say 120° for distributing the light in most homes, where as a narrower beam for display lighting.

Personally I wont fit integrated fittings, as you say in years when they quit they'll be a nightmare to find and repair, hows that good for the environment? Gu10 fitting and change bulbs as customer requires.

@efixx It's a good product, however a few ideas of additional features to suggest to Knightsbridge for a future version if feasible. 1) A adjustable brightness feature from 1W to 10W, adjusted by a potentiometer on the back. 2) A mechanically adjustable lenses feature to change the beam angle on the fly. 3) Magnetically attached reversible covers/faceplates.

Oh so close to perfection, if they do a rope edge brass bezel it would be perfect. With all the switching on the back of the fitting do you train a mouse or a borrower to switch it for you

It would be good to show the light turning on while installed with the dimmer. I've installed this spotlight all over the house just to find out they take 2-3s to turn on when connected to a dimmer.

This looks like a great idea, the only issue I have with this sort of stuff is when it fails you need to throw away the whole unit... LED street lights are now failing near me after just 2 years, and they need to replace the whole head, not just a bulb, so they are left out of action for a lot longer.

I install the standard model of these without the adjustable settings and they are brilliant! Wouldn't install anything else now. These are something else though! Iv been there when I have fitted 36 in an extension and the customer specs cool white then a week after install wants warm white. Imagine the hassle the adjustable k settings will save!

Why do these fittings draw 8w, when dimmed to 10%, were a GU10 LED of 5w dimmed to the same 10% draws less than 1w. The SpecktroLED appears to draw full rate all the time whereas the GU10 LED bulb appears to be variable and thus significantly more power efficient. Is there a follow-up video where we test the most power-efficient downlights available? I really like the SpecktroLED especially as there is now a swivel version available but a bit power hungry compared to other older fittings

Nice enough unit, but not a big fan of integrated downlights. Have seen a few sparks on here that would have used integrated downlights a year or so ago, but have moved back to replaceable GU10 cans due to call backs of various brands of the integrated type.

The issue with all LED stuff is how much the LED's are being pushed. Say a 6w LED bulb may have 12 LED's running at 0.5w, which is about right. The problem is when manufacturers start to cut costs & use say 9 LED's, now running at 0.75w - or worse 6 LED's running at 1w each in the bulb/unit. This generates much more heat & rapidly shortens the lifespan of the unit, often resulting in a LED or two dying of the black dot of death, with most of them arranged in series = whole bulb/unit is dead. All for saving a tiny fraction in costs or poorly engineered in the first place pushing the LED's too much. The switch to toggle 8w & 5w is likely a 1uF ~ 1.5uF 400v capacitor (with discharge resistor), that when enabled switches the 8w LED unit down to 5w to prolong life. You can do all this to many LED stuff, GU10's, floodlights etc... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-biEZ1TbdhhU.html

My flat plate sockets, etc, are Knightsbridge - now four years old. No problems except one, the dimmer switch failed after two years. I expected that as the innards module was the standard cheapish design seen in the cheapo stuff DIY sheds. I replaced it with a Varilight V Pro module - I was to replace it in initial installation, but never got around to it. Far better.

I understand new legislation means lamps must be replaceable in a fitting as ‘repairable’. Is this a lamp or a fitting? I want ‘Smart’lamps!
@StevieB759
@StevieB759 2 года назад
That’s is how I understand the new regulations - the light source has to be replaceable - I.e like a GU10 lamp as an example - these dedicated light source Downlights are not compliant under new regs as if they fail you have to replace the complete fitting and the failed unit ends up in landfill - plus given the chances of getting the same fitting in say 4 or 5yrs time are remote as designs come & go so quickly in this particular market.
@JimWhitaker
@JimWhitaker 2 года назад
Exactly. Just had to change a fitting which had failed. Design not available - it is five years after all! So that is two complete fittings for one failure.

You guys are like kitchen gadget salesmen ;) In an ironic way though, which just makes it funny. Colour rendering looks okay from that fruit bowl but hard to tell on a video. What’s the CRI? For me CRI is everything. Also is there any patterning of the light from the reflector? I really prefer reflector lights not these bland, cheap, highly diffused ones you can get. Shame you need a physical switch on the reverse to change the white temperature (as opposed to some remote control or smarts…)
@efixx

Not the best for reliability & these could be of the same.! Also a shame to have all that flexibility and then have no access to it again once its in the ceiling.! (Without damaging the ceiling again of course). This is where the V50 wins everytime.! Easy access under the bezel.! You need to know what you want before you fit it & if that's the case then just buy what you want / need??!

Missus prefers 3000 to 4000 in kitchen, moans bathroom is too bright as for a while one the three bulbs failed so she got used to a more subtle light in there. When I finally replaced it, she complained it is too bright now - but we had 3 lights in there for ages until one blew. I know but I got used to it she says WOMEN - never bloomin' happy. Shower is still 12v LED until I get around to replacing it with GU10's. She'll probably moan about that too - jeeez

First world problem being solved in a ridiculously over-complicated way. 1. Reduced lifespan (More components = reduced life span. Ditto complexity) 2. I bet the customer won't stop changing their mind just because you have installed the unit and then scratched the paint taking it out to try another setting. It might have a use as a single display unit so that customer can see the effects before choosing which to go for in a non-adjustable and cheaper unit. Not impressed.
