Thank you, Major Fam, for explaining what was going on with EL I literally forgot the last episode and was concerned about her. But yes you guys are right she has been through hell and is only 14 years old of course she would be acting this way. Thank you again, Major Fam, for setting me right that's why we worked great together I'm off sometimes and the family puts me back on. Love you, Family

I'm with Joel because this hypothetical vaccine wouldn't solve jack and the Firefliesbare just perpetuating the kind of behavior that makes humans worse than the infected. If it was only ever about finding that cure, Marlene would have tried to arrange a ceasefire with FEDRA, to pool resources and maximize their odds of success. Instead, she planned to move their sole immune carrier in a high risk venture across the country. Why? Because the vaccine wold be a war asset, and if they can't win, nobody deserves to win. I might be looking too deep, but whatever.

The thing is there was no guarantee that Ellie's sacrifice would have yielded a cure. They didn't even bother taking the time to study her genetic make up; blood, tissue samples, etc. They were just gonna cut into her brain, and it might have been for nothing. So I think Joel getting her out of there through any means necessary was justified. I've been off and on the fence about him lying to Ellie, though. It's understandable he lied to protect her, but I also wonder if it would've been better to be straight with her. I dunno... I think it really depends on where Ellie's mindset is.

I agree! I woulda done the same things for my child! You don’t just risk her life with no kind of testing or nothing. If Marlene had lived she would be their greatest threat and she knows Joel and his story and his brother etc. And he lied so she had a shot at a normal life. Just being a normal kid.

Ellie was quiet because she’s still traumatised from the last episode with David, and as a kid she doesn’t have the tools to regulate and Joel isn’t good at that.

The grand debate over who was wrong and who was right. In the perfect world you would like to believe Ellie should have been given a choice. However, realistically, the fireflies, doctors or whomever knew of Ellie’s condition would have never just let her walk out had she said no. It’s why she was never given the choice. Also, it had never been mentioned that the doctors even know that it will work. I have doubts it would have. So I too would rather have Joel step in to save her from something she didn’t know was coming. The only part he messed up on was by lying to her about it.

I laughed at the casting comment for Ellie's mom 🤣 you are right, except it's the opposite! Ashley and Troy were involved before they casted Pedro and Bella. Ashley Johnson IS Ellie. More so than Troy Baker is Joel in my opinion, as the character of Ellie pulls much of her personality from Ashley herself like her love of space and mannerisms. Plus her voice is almost exactly beat for beat like how she is in the game, while Troy doesn't use his normal voice as Joel. This is a passing of the torch from the mf OG that is Ellie that defines the entire game series with her A++ performance to Bella, who is doing a great job.

The game has had such staying power for 10+ years BECAUSE it ends in such a moral mess with no clear answer, it compels you to want to talk about it and ponder on it. If it ended neatly and cleanly I don't think it would have stuck around so long. Interestingly enough, Neil Druckman (game writer/director and show co-producer) said that when they were play-testing the game with folks, people were split 50/50 if they didn't have kids, but parents were 100% in agreement w/ Joel, and I think that reveals a lot about how we change when we have kids. The game IS SO GOOD, it first came out in 2013 for the PS3, and they have released remasters for the PS4 and PS5, and in a couple weeks it's coming to PC, it's remastered for 4K and all the newest/best graphics and sound but it's the same game and same story as the original., and I'll say it again, it's SOOO good. There are some key differences because there are things you can do in a game you can't do in a show and vice-versa, but many of the "key moments" are the same. The first game, aka "The Last Of Us Part 1" is what was covered in its' entirety in season 1 of the show. The second game is what they'll be covering in future seasons, and at the moment only part 1 is coming to PC so if you want to play part 2 and not wait for the show you'll need a PS4/PS5. They will release part 2 to pc eventually but not for a while. Love to see folks become new fans of such an amazing story. Cheers

This is how the game ends . The game even ends on Ellie saying ok . People have lied to save or keep Ellie alive since birth . Her mom lied about cutting the cord before she was bit to save her . The fireflies did them both dirty by not giving Ellie a choice and treating Joel like shit after all he went through getting her there . I support Joels decision

marlene didn't tell ellie she was going to die for the cure, she didn't give ellie the choice also the way they brought them in they knocked joel out and dragged ellie away that would have been the last time he saw her and when he woke up joel didn't have a chance to say goodbye, They asked 100 parents what decision they would make and 100% sided with joel not a 50 50 split 100% agreed with him. it's easy to think rationally as an outside perspective but in joel's position he has lost his love tess for this, he bonded with ellie and she saved his life twice, she fought with everything she had to stay alive in david's camp and marlene doesn't know any of it and she doesn't believe ellies as capable as she is "she would have died on day one", like joel said about tommy being in the firefly's he said they wanted to save the world and they let tommy down so he left them, marlene killed so many innocent people in boston through the bombs she set off in rebellion against fedra she left ellie to grow up and be a part of the exact same group of people she was attacking. and this episode Ellie was planning a life with joel after it learn guitar and the sheep ranch joel was gonna sing for her she was going to follow him anywhere he went, she had no idea that it would kill her and she never got to choose if it was worth dying for, plus i don't think the firefly's would have even give her the option to live or die for it because they wanted the cure no matter what even if its impossible. it opens so many more avenues to look at and noone is 100% good or bad it's just a matter of perspective. i do think Ellie was suspicious at the end but after everything she's been through and everyone she's lost and killed she couldn't handle joel lying to her even if some part of her knew it was a lie, being without him means her biggest fear becomes true she really will be alone so she said okay. Oh and Ashley was the voice, mocap and face model for Ellie and Troy was voice and mocap for Joel even Merle she was the voice and mocap for Marlene in the game and she played her actual character in this series.
@MFBloosh
@MFBloosh Год назад
That whole ending sequence could've been avoided if Marlene and the Fireflies just asked Ellie what she wanted to do. And if Ellie said she was willing to die for the cure, then Joel most likely would've been hesitant but also accepting. And if Ellie wasn't cool with dying, THEN Joel could've kicked everyone's ass. But Marlene wanted to be more brutal than she had to be with Joel and Ellie. Not excusing what Joel did, but Marlene didn't really give him the best choices to work with.

marlene really could have done more explanations and give joel some time to heal, i know it's risky. but put him in a cell and let him think about it. if it worked it's the WORLD that's gonna be saved. and yeah, marlene, as a human being, could have done better when talking with joel. i think ellie was ready for anything too

As a story lover since 2013 I gotta say, sure I don't agree with him lying to her but I understand why. Also don't really agree with her not being asked, by either party, what she wanted and to give her maybe 1 last day with Joel. But no matter how many times I've played game or rewatched the episode through reactions, I'm always on Joel's side and I'm not a parent yet. I can imagine what he has gone through and seen and where he is in life to know what he knows of the world not many people are worth saving on a maybe they can create a cure. Also doesn't mean saving humanity makes them humane again at the same time if they ever truly were before the fall. What he does know is she IS worth saving. And I respect his choice to save her. Just the lie will do more harm than good. But I adored this season and so ready for the next.♡
@jasonhair2457
@jasonhair2457 Год назад
I completely agree with what Joel did. We have enough stories about one person being sacrificed to save the rest of the world. This was a parent who sees it as him failing to save his first child. He became the person that would not allow that to happen again, and when the life of his new child was threatened, he put an end to that threat. Besides all that, the Firefly's plan never would have worked. They may have created a cure, a vaccine against the fungus, but they didn't have the means to produce large quantities of it and distribute it to the rest of the world. Marlene had armed guards whose only job was to keep her alive and she said she still almost didn't make it. They would have gotten the vaccine to a few of their own people and it probably would have ended there.

Thanks for playing the summary. Bella said something significant - "too painful....to realize that her only purpose hasn't been fulfilled." No! She's 14! Yes, she's living in an apocalyptic era but what if she does have another purpose? What if there are other doctors who can guarantee success of a vaccine? What if they are able to perform the procedure without killing her? What if they are able to mass produce and distribute throughout the world? Let's face it, the Fireflies couldn't be trusted to protect themselves much less Ellie. That's why they didn't transport Ellie across country. Why should anyone trust them with creating and distributing a vaccine?

Hey Major, glad u liked the series as much as I did. I had watched a limited playthrough of the game & all of the cut scenes about 2yrs ago. U should be good to play the 1st game because they covered the whole 1st game in the series. U will probably notice some difference when u play, but that is to be expected. I do think they chose Bella Ramsey for the part of Ellie because she has a similar sound & look to Ashley Johnson, who is the voice & motion actor for the game. It was great that she was Ellie's mom in the series. I'm glad they showed in the series how Ellie got her immunity. People that just played the game wondered why Ellie was immune for years. The whole Joel killing everyone to get Ellie out of the hospital is a moral gray area. Joel wants to save the only light in this life since Sarah, plus he knows the Fireflies were going to take Ellie's life without her knowledge. O, Marlene, telling Joel she understands how Joel feels, that is bull pucky. Marlene stuck Ellie in FEDRA military school when she was a baby. She didn't spend any time w/her or get to know her. Joel did. He spent months w/Ellie, & thought of her like a daughter. The main thing that bothered me about the whole situation was "The Fireflies did not even give Ellie a choice!" & "They did not know if it was going to work." I feel bad that Joel had to lie to Ellie, not only to protect her from what he had done, but also to keep her from hating him & possibly leaving him. Another thing, how stupid was that doctor? A man comes into the operating room w/a gun in his hand, & the doctor picks up a scalpel saying "I can't let u take her.", instead of complying. The idiot deserved to get shot.🙄 Anyway, sorry to see the Season come to an end. I enjoyed your reactions to the series.👍😊

@Major Reacts, HBO was already going to put the original actors in the series in some fashion, but I think it was just really lucky that Bella and Ashley share facial features. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that's why they wrote this new origin just so Ashley could play Ellie's mom. It's fitting and a little funny that the original Ellie is the mother of the new one. The only thing I don't like about this new ending is how they make Ellie Blade. They gave her Blade's origin story =/ I preferred the story that left it a mystery. I don't think we needed an explanation. All series long, we all just accepted that Ellie was special, and had we not gotten this story, I think many of us would have been fine with that. But now we know exactly why Ellie is immune. 11:03 She's reached the end of her journey and the realization that they're at the end is starting to weigh on her. Silver Lake was in the winter, and their long sleeved shirts tell me that we're in the spring, so they are a month or two away from last episode. 16:27 this is survivors guilt talking. She blames herself for Riley, Tess, Sam and Henry's death. She feels like she owes them and she has to see this through. Rewind back to the start of the third story, and you'll recall that she reminded Joel that she wasn't to blame for Tess' death. She made that very clear, but look at her now. She's changed. Her journey with Joel brought them closer together, as such she likely feels bad for Joel, that she's taken something from him. And while she can't bring Tess back, she can at least see this through, for Tess...and Joel too. But this isn't what Joel wants. Joel just wants Ellie to be happy, and he wants her to be a part of his life. 21:38 Wheels are turning! All this time Ellie was talking about giving them blood and doing tests. Surgery is a huge step past that, way beyond what Ellie was told would be happening to her. And Joel's mind flipped a switch, RED ALERT! 22:01 not could. GURANTEED! There's no putting the brain back together again. Ellie was always a means to an end, she was cargo, FEDRA property and Joel just delivered her. 23:27 Cardiology is heart related. Joel did pause though to get a quick read of where he was and where he needs to go. He's made up his mind, and they're all going down. 27:21 What this doctor chose to do was medically unethical. He was going to do a procedure without the patients consent--he lied to her--and he was about to kill her. Joel didn't need another reason to end this man. Joel killed every involved, save for the two nurses, to make sure no one came for him or Ellie. Everyone here knew what was up and not one of them not that what they were doing was wrong. The Fireflies have been fighting a 20 year war against FEDRA and they hadn't made any ground. Ellie was a game changer and she was the key for them to put themselves on top. This episode really highlights the BS that Marlene spoke about in episode one and the Firefly crap that Riley tried to defend. Ellie saw through it in the mall, but Riley was her friend. The Fireflies don't want to return power to the people like Marlene said, they want to replace FEDRA with themselves. They took Ellie's power away from her, remember? She was their prisoner back in Boston, and she's their prisoner now in this hospital, and they were about to have their way with her, like David wanted to back at Silver Lake. The Fireflies and David are a lot a like, they do what they want to whoever they want when they want. They try to show themselves in a good light, but if you watched all the hints early on, you already knew they weren't. *They made Riley a child soldier and posted her in a mall they didn't clear and left her alone to make pipe bombs, which we saw them use in episode one, remember? *The bombs Riley made were later used to blow up the FEDRA vehicle outside Robert's hideaway, nearly kill Robert and Tess. Who knows who else was killed/injured? We know Robert's bodyguards were. *Marlene was sending Riley to infiltrate the Atlanta QZ, Riley was going to be a spy. *Riley was being sent to her death. Had she been found out, FEDRA would have shot her death or hanged in the public square for all to see. Riley was expendable; she was a grunt. Ironic! Riley left FEDRA because she didn't want the life of a grunt, and what did the Fireflies do to her? They made her a grunt ='( *Marlene didn't hesitate when she realized the girl with Riley was her childhood friend's daughter. Marlene knew what was happening when she knew who she was dealing with, and she knew what she had. And she was going to use it. She increased security in the Boston QZ to secure her win. Marlene is all business. She's a cold woman who cares for nothing more than the Firefly cause. She relapsed with Anna after Ellie's birth, and she made sure to never do that again. *Choice and honesty are not the Firefly way. You, how did Marlene put it back in episode one? "follow f*cking orders?" Ellie wasn't a Firefly, but that didn't matter. Anna had given her to her and she was reclaiming the cargo she didn't originally want =/ Ellie was useful to her now. FEDRA gets a bad rep and they've done some bad things, but they do give people choices and we've seen that with their rations. People under the care are free to do whatever job they want for more rations, if they so choose. Captain Kwong even showed us that he cared for Ellie and wanted a better life for her. Marlene and Kwong could be any different from one another. 32:21 This is Ellie coming clean. She lied to Joel and Tess back in Boston. Deep down, she knows Joel's lying, and she's telling him the truth now, trying to get him to do the same. Yikes. Joel's lie is necessary though. Ellie has survivors guilt, and she can't turn it off, at least not yet. Joel doubling down, probably made it worse, but the fact that he killed just about everyone at St. Mary's put an end to what cure, for now anyway. Wrong or not, Joel created a space in which an informed Ellie can give her consent in the future should the opportunity come again. I'm one of those that agrees with Joel. I don't care about the greater good thing. America did that to enslaved Blacks in America and their descendants right up to 1972 all in the name of medical science. Many modern day procedures and medicines were gained at the expense of Black Americans. They were able to do this because, they, like the Fireflies, didn't see enslaved Blacks as people, but property. Ellie, was cargo, remember, there isn't much difference between cargo and property. You do what you want with your stuff, you don't need to ask others for permission, but people aren't stuff, but people. This story has set Ellie up to be a post apocalyptic version of Henrietta Lacks and Ellie's genetically altered cells are this worlds immortal cells. Ellie holds the key to the future in the same way Henrietta did, and the doctors of this world were going to take it from Ellie, without her consent...again...like doctors did to Henrietta Lacks, and to this day Henrietta's family hasn't been compensated despite the billions her unique cells made them. Henrietta's cells continue to help developed medicines and vaccines, but sadly, doctors couldn't save her, but that was 70 years ago when they kept the best medical care and doctors away from her, because she was a Black woman at a hospital that wasn't fit for White people ='(

I didn't think it was possible, but this show only convinced me that much more that Joel wasn't wrong because fuck Marlene! "So, what would she want?" Like Marlene didn't have Ellie sedated and put on the chopping block under false pretenses. Like she even once considered telling Ellie the truth and letting her make that decision. Not that it would make a difference. They'd force Ellie under the knife as she kicked and screamed for her life if they had to. Marlene didn't do this to spare Ellie, but to spare themselves. Way easier to pretend your a good person when you can just assume your sacrificial lamb agrees.

Now i alway thought Ellie’s decision was made for her. If she knew the truth she may of still went for it. She is a child who was traumatized. She was also hyped up as a savior. That was in her head the entire time. Taking all that into perspective, for me takes a whole new meaning to the look at the end. She believes joel. At least for now. Knowing he will protect her. Its a huge blow to her sense of self. She had all her decisions made for her. She thought she had this one. For the record i dont blame joel. Ellie will be furious to find out the truth. But he would have to live with it. It would be very different if they knew she was gonna die from the beginning. Or if it would even work in the first place. I get why joel did it. Alot of reasons, but the biggest was whats best for ellie.

Guns just be loud af. *Most* people fail to realize this because they're not explicitly shown the ears being covered, and thst speaks volumes to the choice at the end. People jumping to a conclusion for lack of picking up on context throughout the story. If it were a book without the visual cues I think it would provide a different narrative at the end. But because we're bias to our physical senses it's not easy for some to recognize the reality.

I'm Team Joel Was Right. The fireflies failed tremendously all the time. She's the one shot at a cure and they don't even know for sure if their experiment will work. If she were older and the fireflies weren't so hard up for ppl and resources, it would be different. But she's his kid and it's not a guarantee her sacrifice would actually save anyone- but her being alive saved Joel.

As much as I’ve enjoyed their telling of this story, I still think it doesn’t hold a candle to the game. What you don’t get enough of in the show is Joel’s persistence and the closeness of the two. We have spent so much time with other characters and not enough time with the two. In the game every item you pick up, every weapon you unlock, every door you enter there’s a bit of dialogue. There’s at minimum 15 hours of gameplay and content, sad side stories in environments you enter in the game, collectibles that Ellie and Joel can bond over. Your gameplay has an ultimate goal: defend and protect Ellie. If she gets infected on her and dies when you play as Joel you have to start the mission over. It makes you care about her more and solidifies that Joel and her are a team. You tackled obstacles together and solve puzzles of how to get across things as one unit. In the game the conclusion is so earned because by the end you really care about Ellie and understand why if Joel loses her, he truly loses everything. And in a way that’s his biggest flaw, he cannot go through the pain of losing a child twice. His instinct is to protect his child and that’s what she becomes. Would love to see you play. The game is electric. ❤✌🏼

I don't see how anyone who's been on this journey, whether through the game or the show, can disagree with Joel's decision.

It should've been Ellie's decision, not either Marlene's or Joel's to decide her fate.

In both games, Marlene was only informed upon Ellie's arrival that the Dr. Needed to operate on her brain to extract the cordyceps, thus would kill her. Marlene chose to sacrifice Ellie without giving her the option to decide for herself. So this is the only reason I agree with Joel saving Ellie. I would've preferred Joel tell the truth though. I've played both games and I still feel the same way.

I disagree with Joel’s decision because of the look on Ellie’s face at the end. I def understand why Joel did what he did tho. Also I disagree with Marlene’s decision. Neither of them cared to give Ellie a choice.

There was never ANY chance that Ellie would survive. In the game we also learn that there were other immune people and they all died but no vaccine could be produced. So, Ellie would likely have died for nothing. In any case, Joel did the right thing. If Marlene had given Ellie the choice, then maybe the fireflies would have survived because Ellie would have been the only one able to talk Joel into letting her go... And then he would only have been a danger to himself.

I could see both sides of the "save everyone vs the one you love" argument. But putting yourself in Joel's shoes... the world ended 20 years ago for him. He's been a criminal and had a horrible existence, odd jobs, robbing and killing just to survive. He's spent one third of his life being a completely emotionally broken person. Then one person pulls you out of all that and gives you joy again. And as soon as that happens they're going to kill her to save everyone else? Add to that that from the fascist Fedra to the raiders and everyone else he's dealt with, the world to him is nothing but infected and 99% garbage people. There's no way he could have dealt with losing that one person. I can't wait for S2...it's so hard to even look at the RU-vid home page without getting unwanted spoiler info about it.. argh!

You know me, Major… I’m a no spoiler kind of gal… but as much as I would like for you to play the game… don’t. Not yet. The Last of Us pt 2 is a “second season” type game.. a continuation of this story. If you played it now, you would spoiler yourself for the second season. And since they’ve already been authorized for a 3rd (or so I’ve heard), you could ruin all of it for yourself. Those of us who have played it all the way through, already are spoilered… unless they do some major MAJOR changes… and that kind of stinks, honestly. It’s like those of us who have read “ Fire & Blood”… we already know what is going to happen in the next season of HOTD… and how it ends. Which, again, stinks. My advice to you is…. As much as you want to play the game right now…. Please don’t. And try to avoid seeing any game play/show comparisons that you can. At least…. That’s how I feel.

The second and third season will both cover part 2. Which is kind of a clever move on Neil part. Stretch the show out for two years before making the third game down the road.
