Is this the Ultimate Deer Rifle?

Much debate can be had about what the best deer cartridge/rifle is. This is sort of a hybrid video. One half a review of the Browning X-Bolt Eclipse Hunter/Burris XTR 624 and one half discussing the effectiveness of the 7mm-08. Tell me your thoughts!

Love the Browning rifles. I ended up with a A-bolt 2 Target/Varmint in 308. At the time it was the only rifle Browning produced that was threaded in the standard 5/8-24 to accept a suppressor. Get a suppressor for hunting out of a shooting house - especially for hunting with kids or other hunters in the same house. It is a game changer.

I won a Browning AB3 in 7mm-08 last year. I was very apprehensive about the cartridge mostly because I wasn’t educated enough about it. Well it sure didn’t disappoint, I dropped 4 whitetail in their tracks last year and can’t wait for this year. Recoil isn’t even worth talking about.

it looked like a spine shot to me, but i am almost 40 years old and the 2nd rifle I bought was a rem seven in 7mm-08 and it has taken well over 100 deer 3 antelope 5 mule deer 20 plains animals in Africa and 4 elk and 2 black bear and countless hogs. it works

I have the Browning XBolt Max Long Range in a 300WM. Had a very successful hunt this year. I use a NightForce SHV 5x20x56 scope and hand load with 77grns of Retumbo powder and Hornady's ELD-M 208grn bul-let. Dropped "Curly Bill" at 435 yrds and he dropped where he stood. I also used a SilencerCo Omega 300 suppressor. It helps on the ears and recoil. Caught the whole kill shot with "Phone Skope". Their was 3 other goats off to the right of Curly Bill (Antelope) when he dropped they went back to eating. I love my setup and save on ammo. :) A good solid prayer before the hunt one can't go wrong.

Awesome review ! Keep it up. 7mm-08 is a good round for middle agers like me with "hamburger" shoulders from working constructions or the trades. Low Recoil and effective Kill Ranges what more could an ol guy like me hope for? Plus the recoil is low enough you can do some target shooting for fun !!

Gonna be really honest, I've been on the fence about the 7mm-08 for about a year now and you've sold me. Beginning of March I'm going to order a Sako 85 Bavarian in 7mm-08. I feel the Sako is a comparable rifle to the Browning with a more traditional styling. Thank you for your awesome content and great advice.

Alex Rohde-Barthel much appreciated. There was much more of the video that I cut out for time's sake, but it was essentially me just bragging about how shocked I was at this caliber. Obviously there are lots of other factors that play into it dropping deer; shot placement, distance, etc., but I'm completely sold on the 7mm-08. The Sako will be an excellent choice!

I had a 7mm-08 i shot as a kid it was a good round but a bad gun( long story short it shot the first round well but the more it heated up the worse it did). I had no problems from the round but would lean towards a 308 or any other 30 caliber as the ultimate rifle for deer and this boils down to heavier bullets for all the 30 calibers. The 308 mainly for anything 200yds and under and a 300 win mag for the 200+ -600yd possibility range. this has more to do with velocity and drop issues. Finally I chose a 308 due to cheap readily avalible ammo since i use it on deer and hogs mostly and alot of that is management purposes the cheap ammo is key.

Can I ask why you would put a 6-24 on a deer rifle? I’m a long range target shooter and the highest magnification I’ve ever used was 22 power when shooting at a 1300 yard target. I’d be comfortable shooting 400 yards with a 6 power scope. Why not put a 1-6 or something on it that’s much more effective for sub 300 yard shooting?

It was the only scope I had laying around at the time. I've since put a Vortex Crossfire II on it and put the Burris on a new .300 PRC.

I agree the 7mm08 is a great cartridge and great for deer but... I've been seriously thinking about a deer rifle and I have decided to go with the 25-06. My reason is for the flat trajectory I prefer aperture sights and I wanted a cartridge that I could shoot 300+ yards with out a sight adjustment. Not saying it's better both are great. Thanks for sharing

Yes 7mm08 your right is probably the greatest thing for deer in modern day calibers stopping by power of a 30-06 without recoil holds up better in wind not terrible amount of rainbow trajectory and shoot flatter than a 270 and at farther distance will hit with more energy than a 308 it's the greatest common probably second best is no longer on the market a 243wssm they fall just a good with the 7mm08

I have no idea where the idea that the 7mm-08 is youth cartridge came from. It's honesty superior to the .308. Out of the whole family, .243 Winchester, .260 Remington, 7mm-08, .308 Winchester, .338 Federal, .358 Winchester, the .308 is at the bottom as far as I'm concerned. 7mm-08 has better SD, BC, less recoil, higher velocities, the .338 Federal and .358 federal perform incredible 350 yards and under. The .308 doesn't quite fill the weight gap between 7mm-08 and the .338/.358 based cartridges. The only reason I buy .308 Winchester brass, is to neck it down or up. One day 7mm STW will be considered a youth cartridge cause it's not as powerful as a .30-378 Weatherby.

Let's see. .308 case necked down for a .284 bullet. Beats the 6.5 Creedmoor out to 500 yards. Makes it good for longer shots on pronghorn. Low recoil (about 12 ft. lbs.). Won't cause a flinch. Carries enough kinetic energy that, when using a controlled-expansion bullet like a Nosler Partition, can take elk out 250-300 yards. I'd say it could have a place in a lot of people's gun safes.

I’ve got a .243 for everything and a 7mm-08 for when the .243 doesn’t do it. I have big stuff, really big stuff but that’s just for shooting and having fun. The .243 and 7mm-08 are business because light, handy and nearly no recoil and of course I don’t need to show off how cool I am to something I’m going to eat.

The x-bolts are prone to jamming because of the high ejection angle. Especially in the magnum action. The empty case hits the scope and falls back into the chamber. DON'T BUY!
