Charlton Heston didn't want to do a sequel and only agreed to appear briefly in the movie if his character was killed off so he couldn't be brought back for more sequels and if his pay went to charity.

This movie came out during the BIGGEST build-up of nuclear weapons in history. The purpose was to show that we (the mutants) still thought "the bomb" was our "savior". It also showed that the apes were becoming more like us every generation (evolution as we came from apes, hence a never ending cycle)... The underground people were mutant descendants from the radiation fallout. Part of the mutation was mind reading / control, justifying their killing with the "we're peaceful, we make our enemies kill our enemies". (a play on the justification of building the arsenal to keep both sides from using them, "bombs for peace") The idea was to put FEAR into people and stop the growth of the nuclear arms race. You weren't *_SUPPOSED_* to like the ending, _that was the point._ Yes, TODAY this movie is *_EXTREMELY_* dated, and wouldn't make sense to most people that didn't live through that time, *_so I can understand your not liking (and not understanding) it.._* When it came out though, it made a POWERFUL statement to the danger we were in. (that's pretty much the plot of the entire series) This series was an early example of Holliwierd moving more towards social issues, and away from simple "entertainment" (they're just more subtle about it now).

Your assessment of Charlton Heston's participation in this movie was spot on. He also insisted on his character dying and destroying the Earth so there'd be no more sequels. The next one is much better. It's funny at first, but gets dark by the end.

The movie is about evolution. There was a 3rd world war, a nuclear war, that wiped everything off the planet and things had to start all over again. And when it did, man came first, and then apes instead of the other way around when evolution restarted. At the end of the 1st movie, they get to the Statue of Liberty, except it's just the top of it. That's because of all the time that has passed. That's what happens to cities and stuff when people abandon them, dirt builds up and if you leave them for hundreds of years (maybe not in Texas but other areas) dirt builds up and covers them completely up in some areas.

Just shows how studios at that time didn't care about extending movie series. They had very short term focus. With studio executives and chairmen coming and going, they didn't think beyond the next several years at any time. If a film series continued, then the new executives who arrived after the series started wouldn't get any credit. They only cared about the movies they themselves helped develop. This is one of the reasons why 'Aliens' took seven years to arrive after 'Alien'.

You're right that Heston didn't want to be in this, but it wasn't because of the script. He was against the idea of the original film having a sequel at all (sequels were very rare in those days), and only agreed to be in it because he felt he owed it to the producer, who helped to get the first film made. It was also him who suggested that the film end with his own character's death and the destruction of Earth itself, because he didn't want to be in any more sequels, or for any more sequels to be made. He stated all this himself in the 'Behind the Planet of the Apes' making of documentary. The third film is better, by the way, and I'd love to see you react to it.

The idea of making a film with the expectation of sequelizing everything is a relatively modern phenomena. This was an early example of a hit film that the studio wanted more of, but the talent didnt. Other films like Jaws were clearly meant to be one-offs but got badly milked by studios.

Look at this in context: the Vietnam War was still going on, the Soviet Union was at odds with the U.S., nuclear annihilation was a major concern, people were worried about the population explosion and pollution and whale hunting. The idealism of the '60s was ebbing after assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King. A lot of dystopian films were made in the '70s with downer endings. All this pessimism would lead to the selfishness of the '80s.

Beneath the Planet of the Apes 4. Battle for the Planet of the Apes 5. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes I think the third film is the best. I'm curious how you find it. I think Beneath the Planet of the Apes is okay. I kinda like the ending. In the end, Professor Zaius' lies are flying around his ears. In my eyes, he knows exactly that the "god" is an atomic bomb and that what Ursus is up to is dangerous. But since he never told the Apes the truth, he can't stop the apes from dealing with the atomic bomb either. And I like the irony at the end. It's not the militant apes, nor the mutants who idolized the atomic bomb that are destroying the earth, it's Taylor.

This sequel did kind of a bait and switch. It opens with the hero of the first movie, Charlton Heston, going off and we’ve got a whole new story. I know you want a sequel to be different, but I don’t think that was the right call. If you want to see another really good Charlton Heston movie, The Omega Man is the one. Will Smith was in the remake I Am Legend, but the Heston version is more philosophical and better at storytelling. It’s also almost a horror movie. Terrific, underrated film.

I am a big fan of the first part, but i have to admit: this second part was bad and disturbing. As you pointed out absolutely right: no one got a ''good death'' .. every death was so pointless, just for the sake of ''killed'' . Nothing heroic - nothing thrilling about it. All favorite characters die. Taylor not only kills his worst enemies, but also his best friends (like Cornelius , Zira, and Ziras nephew) . The mutant people were in my opinion a creative but absolutely not necessary addition - and even worse: a disturbing addition , because of their very strange kind of psychopathy. There is no explaination how they even can exist (how they make food, clothing, etc). There is also no good reason why they used the whole story of the first part, to tell it with Brent (Brent also crashes with the spaceship on earth, Brent also gets to the ape-city , Brent also meets Nova, Brent also meets Cornelius and Zira, Brent also gets shot, Brent also loses his other Astronaut-friends, Brent also get medical treatment by Zira, Brent also escapes with the help of Zira, Brent also finds out that planet of the apes is indeed earth, Brent also is with Nova as companion, Brent also cares for her, etc etc ). I really love old movies - mostly. And the actors in this movie are really top notch ! But the script, the story, and directing is so bad, that even the best actors cant save this movie. So yes .. its also for me a 1 star movie. It has to much sick moments also ... the part when Brent almost kills Nova. I get it: he was under influence. But just the idea of the director, to put something psychopathic senseless violence - is disturbing. And he repeats it when Brent fights with Taylor. Two times, where two characters which we like, almost kill the other one for no reason. Thats just disturbing, and almost doesnt even serve the plot of the already weak story. I wouldnt say that its the worst movie - i saw worse. But its probably in my top 10 of the worst movies. But i also want to say something in the defense of the filmmakers of this movie: As far i know the movie studio only gave less than half of the budget as in part 1. In the next parts they gave even less money. The next parts arent so disturbing as this one, and have few good moments i would say. But they are still far worse than part 1 .

Dawn, at the time this movie was made the creative people of Hollywood were obsessed with the fear of nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. The message behind this movie was to convince the public that the constant pursuit of bigger and bigger atomic weapons by the two super-powers would result in the death of the entire planet. It was not intended to be entertaining or hopeful. The film-makers wanted people to be unhappy and depressed by the story. The entire movie was intended to be a warning to turn away from the path that our governments were taking at that time.

Boulle was a secret agent for Free French working in the Phillipines and was captured by the Japanese and spent 2 years in a forced labor camp. That inspired him to write his novel, the Bridge on the River Kwai. His planet of the apes book was a lot different than the movie versions. It did not take place on earth but a different planet all together. The apes were no as primitive as in the movies and lived in 20th century type cities and wore 20th century type clothes. The main human character was named Ulysses and he was given freedom to walk around and treated with social prestige since all other humans on the planet are primitive and can't talk like in the movies. The apes are technology advanced in the book. Ulysses mates with Nova and she becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son who walks and talks just after 3 months. they fear for their child because he will be like Ulysses amd able to talk etc and they are afraid of what the apes may do. They escape the planet to an orbiting space ship and Ulysses programs it to take them back to earth. There is no mention of nuclear bombs etc in the book so no idea where you got that ot was a commentary on war and the nuclear age.

There is some social commentary in this movie as well, although it is definitely less pronounced than in the others, especially the next one (and the first one too obviously). One thing I have always respected this movie for was literally having humans destroy the world with a nuclear bomb (I have always liked the ending narrative of this movie, so pessimistic and dark). Lots of literature and movies in the 70s “warned” us of this possibility, I remember being a kid during this time and being terrified about it but always feeling more optimistic about it because of how the issue was usually treated during this time, but this movie freakin’ did it … humans destroyed the world. Also, the not-so-subtle women’s liberation movement commentary in this movie is also very important I think and also quite pessimistic and dark … literally the second she “gets her voice” she is killed. Pretty powerful stuff there IMHO. But I can understand why you didn’t particularly like it, and I really respect your honesty in saying how you really feel about the movie. If you didn’t like this one, my advice is to not watch the last one which is the fifth in the series (Battle for the Planet of the Apes). I don’t think you will like it much either.

What's lost in the 2000s is the social commentary of the series. The movies tackled racism. It tackled the class system found in the black community. The lighter skinned apes were the hierarchy while the dark skinned apes were the foot soldiers. The humans on the planet represented the way blacks were being treated. The movies tackled the cold War. They also tackled the rapidly changing pace of the world in the 60s. The changes ranged from technology, attitudes toward race and increasing technology. You had the ruling class scared of change and the younger population embracing change

It was fear of being seen as racist that temporarily shut down the first movie. The producers only hired white stuntmen because they were afraid to ask black men to dress up as monkeys. When it was discovered they chose no blacks the union and a few civil rights leaders showed up and asked why. The producers explained their reasoning. The union asked what the "apes" would be doing. Basically riding horses, jumping/falling off horses and higher places, fighting, shooting, etc. The union asked "So, it's a western, but with different costumes?" Once they looked at it that way they decided to add several black stuntmen.

Nova's perfect white teeth always cracked me up 😁 I enjoyed this reaction, even if it wasn't glowing 👍This series is what happens when a studio wants sequels to an amazing film but keeps cutting the budget and rushing production. I love all of these films dearly, even this sad little mess, but much of that is pure nostalgia. I like the stories of the next two better, _Escape_ and _Conquest,_ love seeing Zira and Cornelius one more time, and I feel that Roddy McDowall carried the last two. Don't really care for _Battle_ though, I thought it was a rather flaccid finale to the original series. I vaguely remember watching both the TV series and the Saturday morning cartoon, but that's as far as that goes 🤔 I think the cartoon was actually a mix of the movies and the original novel by Pierre Boulle, it looked like the movies but was set on a different planet. As for newer versions, Tim Burton's "re-imagining" had its moments, mostly the improved makeup and some good ape performances. It's not part of any canon, and very early versions were going to start Arnold Schwarzenegger. I'd say it's worth a look. The most recent reboot series has been more successful, starting with _Rise of the Planet of the Apes._ It's set in contemporary times and gives a new spin on how society went apesh!t. It also stars Andy Serkis as the lead chimp Caesar, using motion capture again like when he played Gollum.

As bad as it is, this still beats the Tim Burton/Mark Walberg reboot. I was 6 or 8 when I first saw it and thought it was great because I was 6 or 8. No, Charelton Heston did not want to be in this. So they gave him a shit ton of money to make brief appearances at the beginning and the end. Then they cast an actor who looks alot like Heston to star in the film. The studio wanted to milk this for all they could, including a short lived television series.

Of the two, I think you might like "Soylent Green" the most. "Will Penny" is very good but overlooked western which Heston has said was his favorite screen role. It does have some action, but it's more of a character driven movie that's best for its quieter moments.

Dawn Marie Beneath had it's moments. The humans in the underground city were descendents of nuclear war on earth of the past. That's why the humans evolved into what they are, mutants. I do know that the producers had a hard time topping the first movie's ending. So this is what they came up with. Anyway check out the third film Escape from the Planet of the Apes. The science in this film is not very good but the rest of story is pretty good. Also Beneath is the only film that did not feature Roddy McDowall. He was in England directing a film. But he is back for the rest of the sequels. Escape also has a good opening. A good shock. Nuffsaid. Watch it and enjoy. Terry.

One thing you might not know. The Planet of the Apes series. Was the first of the big franchise to exploit and flood the markets with Toys, Comic books, Novels, Clothing, Merchandise and Saturday Cartoons. There were other franchise that had success selling items, Bond 007, Batman, The Beatles ( Yellow Submarine ) are a few. But nothing like the Commercialization Planet of the Apes did. Which paved the way for Star Wars to blow it away in 1977. I will add for your consideration. Creech and Chong, Up in Smoke. That one is right up your alley. Don't forget., when you review films. Wow! Dawn, whether you like them or not, I'm happy and excited that you're going to do all 5 of these movies (I do hope you like them, though). I was a child when they came out, so I can say that they were a product of their time. There IS a link between the original film series, and the most recent trilogy, which is seen as the "Original Timeline" leading to the events of this series, which alters the timeline (as you'll see). Something else to note, is that these were made at a time when the MPAA rating system was MUCH different. "Conquest" (movie #4) was the only one rated PG due to its violence. All of the others were rated G. Which, these days, indicates a "children's movie". About Heston being in the sequel: Initially, he did not want to be in the sequel. However, because of certain studio heads "taking a chance" on him and his belief in the original script for the first movie, he felt he "owed" them a favor, and agreed to be in the sequel. He did make a few "requests" about it, though. Initially, he wanted to be killed off early in the movie. Later, as the script developed, he agreed to "vanish" early in the film and die at the end of it. Also, he donated his paycheck for this movie to charity. This information was sourced from "Behind the Planet of the Apes", a documentary about the entire Apes franchise. I recommend watching it after you have finished the 5th movie (Battle for the Planet of the Apes). It's very interesting. 15:40 - No, these are the descendants of the humans who lived in the cities and survived the nuclear war. Their DNA was affected by the radiation from the bombs, which is why they look like they do and worship the Alpha/Omega bomb. 19:07 - The 3rd movie (Escape from the Planet of the Apes) is mostly viewed as the most light-hearted of the series. It does take a "dark turn" in the 3rd act, but that's as close to a spoiler as I'll give you. "Beneath" is generally viewed as the worst of the series. I think this was due to the "high expectations" people had coming off of the bar that was set by the first movie. As I said above, "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" is the darkest of the series. The final movie, "Battle for the Planet of the Apes" closes out the story of the original movie series, and has some "light hearted moments", but you really should finish the series off. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this one, but like I said, the original movie set the bar pretty high, and the studio kept cutting the budgets of the sequels (which didn't help matters any), yet continued to demand another Apes movie be made. The main reason that a sixth movie wasn't made is that Arthur P. Jacobs (the man most directly responsible for the movies being made in the first place) died not long after the 5th movie was released. Fun fact: He was married to the actress who played Nova in the first two movies. But keep going with the series. Since so few channels actually watch these movies, I give an automatic Thumbs Up just for you watching it. Also, I respect your honesty in your reviews.

In answer to the question in the title of the video: No, it's not the worst movie ever (I can list far worse made recently actually). It is pretty bad though, one of the worst Planet of the Apes films for sure (for me that prize goes to Tim Burton's). They rushed this into production with little thought except how they had to milk the success of Planet of the Apes fast. Don't let this put you off from continuing. This was the low point of the original Apes films. Escape from the Planet of the Apes was actually very amusing and charming (as well as quite disturbing in the end). Conquest for the Planet of the Apes was such a good story they incorporated most of the plot points into Rise of the Planet of the Apes decades later. Of course, back in the day, budgets for sequels were slashed. Each of the original Apes films has half the budget of the one preceding it. You will notice cost-cutting - for instance only main character apes having proper make-up - but if you don't let that distract you too much you should certainly enjoy the next two films in the series. This film was the only film in the original series of films that did not include Roddy McDowall in the cast. They honestly thought putting any other actor in the same make-up would result in an equally good performance. They were wrong. Roddy McDowall's performances, under heavy prosthetic make-up, were so startlingly good he would go on to star in all 14 episodes of the (short lived) TV series.

The worst movie of all time is Robot Monster, or maybe Santa Claus Conquers The Martians. The thing about the original Planet Of The Apes franchise is: it was under 20th Century Fox, which was near broke at the time, and the budget for the first one was really low. The succeeding APE films had even lower budgets, despite being successful at the box office. It was just a matter of time before the lower budgets had their impact on film quality. The APE series actually saved 20th Century Fox at that time. The guy starring in Beneath The Planet Of The Apes was James Franciscus, who looks kind of like Charlton Heston, but is no relation.

Part of what made the first one so watchable was the novelty of the idea and they had Rod Serling tidy up the script a bit. This sequel is lame. The next in the series, 'Escape From The Planet Of The Apes' is silly but worth at least 1 viewing. Cornelius and Zira somehow, no idea how, manage to resurrect one of the downed space ships and fly it back in time to end up in the current era. Huge plot hole that cannot be satisfactorily explained. As for me, that pretty much killed off my interest in seeing any of the other sequels. You probably won't hate it, but it is dumb. Speaking of Rod Serling...There's a guy who really knows how to write compelling narrative. You might consider reacting to his 'Twilight Zone' TV series from the late 50s/early 60s. This is considered some of the best TV ever. Many entirely haunting episodes.
