Did you honestly make that video without referencing DAZN who are trying to become the Netflix of Livesports? Can't really see the reasoning behind that, unless they declined to pay for being mentioned.
There is a key issue that wasn't studied in this video. Younger people are in general less interested in watching live sports. Any study would skew results in that direction regardless. A more informative study would be how the the opinions of the public has changed over time for different age groups. For anecdotal evidence, I didn't start regularly watching football till almost 20. Much rather preferred to play instead
For me watching live isn't just about watching the best plays, but also about the uncertainty and excitement of not knowing what is going to happen. Watching a game knowing how it ended just isn't the same.
The end of the video sums it all up. I don't think it's a matter of time or even short attention span, which we all have. The main problem is most of us don't want to pay USD$60 or whatever amount a month to SKY, just to watch 4 games in 4 weeks, mostly because different country leagues/european competitions come from different pay service companies. The pay to watch tv services are a mess. It's easier to watch the games you want, from the different competitions on pirate streaming services.
I don't think he mentioned subscriptions tho. This is purely about what young people are interested in and how long they are watching it. And kids are less and less likely to be interested in physical sports.
I have heard about this from quite a few mates in the UK, however back here our subscriptions are pretty cheap, usd 60 as you say is something that would last about two years for us
@@VeryIntellijent I hear you just watch anything sport wise you want then on your computer or tv free stream there are many hd ones out there for you guessed it...... 0 🙏 without the virus's
I'm 15 and I always prefer to watch full games instead of highlights for many reasons. But usually I just don't have time. I have school, my own hobbies and I also want to meet my friends so usually I don't have much time left to sit for 90 minutes to watch a football game or 40 minutes to watch a basketball game. That's why I usually watch the highlights on RU-vid
Are you’re friends football fans as well? I know that for me going to pub to watch football with my friends is a great way to kill 2 birds with 1 stone
The biggest issue imo is the amount of expensive subsribtions you need. For example you could need 3 different packages only if you want to watch the top 4 leagues (and that doesn't include other sports). Which is why tech savy people either sail the 7 seas *which isn't accounted in the statistics* or they justsay fuck it, i'll watch the highlights in a few hours, while doing something else
"sail the 7 seas" lmaooo, but yea I dont think they account for that in the stats so I'd say a lot of people are still interested in it because most of the guys at my school are always discussing football games I haven't even watched, now more girls are getting into it even
@@lonewlf5440 a lot of young people still interested in sport, but the diverse subscription makes people decide to pirate than spend almost 100$ just to watch a sports,at least for american based league its have a centralized subscription for each sport, european football didnt have that advantages with each country have their own league In a sense the idea of ESL is catering toward a more consumer friendly system in a cost of the death of small club across europe Also the statistics probably a fault because young people will opt to watch live sport in pirated website because they didn't have the money to subscribe and because they understand how to pirate
The best way that social media transformed F1 was by making it a lot more open. In the past everything you'd see was very polished and curated, and teams completely secretive. Now, apart from countless experts analysing both race situations and the technical aspects, you also see the top teams giving debriefs on RU-vid, discussing their decisions openly and answering fan questions after every race. Imagine a football coach doing the same, giving his explanation on what strategy he chose and why he made the substitutions that he did. Or players, discussing their play, or training, or equipment. There are also lots of proprietary data analysing companies, just give the fans a glimpse on what goes on behind the scenes and why.
As a 15 year old guy I still love watching full football games, I only check my phone during half time and check the other games during that matchday. The best games to watch are knockout games (champions league, europa league, league cups) they most of the time go to penalty shootouts and theu are the best part of a knockout game.
I'm a zoomer and can't fathom preferring highlights. Watching the game from kickoff to the final whistle is everything. I literally don't watch the games if i miss them, i feel like something is lost when it's not live
I would recommend Athletic Interest to study where Twitch and RU-vid fits in this scenario (specially the purple social media) and how they menace the traditional sports broadcasting. Recently in Brazil, F1 granted a Twitch streamer the rights to broadcast the F1 Brazilian Grand Prix. The same streamer (Gaules) is also streaming 90 NBA Games this season in partnership with Budweiser. His broadcast team has like 4 or 5 people in sort of a watch party. That is a huge broadcasting transformation.
Sounds like we need to make a sequel 🤗. Also found it super interesting that RU-vid recently acquired the rights for the Women's Champions League together with DAZN and is streaming matches globally and for free. There's definitely some movement in the market, but it feels like the big disruption is yet to happen.
@@AthleticInterest Spanish streamer Ibai also got the rights to stream the Copa América and some of PSG's matches for free on twitch. For the Copa América final he got more than 600k viewers, despite it only being available in Spain (not the rest of Latin America) and happening at 2am. And about the big disruption, Netflix was recently considering buying the rights for Formula 1, which imo would be huge. Imagine if, with a Netflix subscription, which many people already have (especially young people) you could also watch live F1 races for free, as well as older races on-demand. Basically what they're trying to do with F1-TV, but with a subscription that is much more attractive since, well, it also contains the entirety of Netflix.
@@AthleticInterest not just F1, motorsports in general are taking advantages of youtune NASCAR and indycar are posting highlights and full races on their channels, NASCAR broadcast a car camera live during Cup Series Races Japanese SuperGT and Super Formula broadcast races online on RU-vid and in other streaming websites Australia (V8) Supercars has races for users that pay for their youtube channel membership In other sports, Baseball has Taiwan league teams often using twitch to broadcast games and extra content like practice and interviews In soccer we have Australia broadcasting its leagues and national team friendlies on youtube and J-League (from Japan) broadcast some games of J1,J2 and Japanese League cup for free in youtube, not mentioning a weekly show that shows the highlights of matches Here on Brazil, recently Jovem Pan did followed Australia Supercars example and broadcasted a National League game for its youtube channel , the move was scary for the Top broadcast that forced a big TV here on Brazil broadcast the game for free on its website From 2022, One of Biggest State Soccer championships (São Paulo State) will have games broadcasted on youtube and HBO Max (Netflix Rival) In European leagues broadcast in Brazil, Bundesliga decided broadcast their League for free on OneFootball, a soccer broadcast app About the streaming battle, asides Amazon, it would be fun to talk about DAZN vs Eleven Sports, both seems growing heavily and probally they will keep dominating love sports market specially on Soccer In Japan DAZN has anything local Soccer, from National Team Games to J League matches and AFC Champions League matches, Meanwhile Eleven Sports took space in a bunch of European countries and in Brazil got rights for a lot of tournaments, specially after they brought out MyCujoo last year
Kids from my village aren’t intrested in sports at all. they neither play nor watch the game on tv. But they love mobile games. At their age I was so crazy about sports. I used to watch all the games available live on tv sometimes even missing school. Even though there was limited coverage of European football because of lack of cable tv in our village i used to gather news to be updated on the European football. Really strange times ahead for sports.
to me, the weirdest part about kids nowadays is their interest to play NBA on consoles, but dont like playing actual basketball with their friends.. strange times indeed
@@andistheinforitbutso7513 No lmao. East Asia is declining in traditional sports and seeing rise in eSports. Indian children love Cricket yes but take a look at your neighbours Myanmar, Their kids spend 10 hours a day in net cafes playing games. Same applies to far East Asia. China is the epicenter of eSports and South Korea is famous for its eSports athletes. SE Asia is also an eSports epicenter.
@@cinnamon3578 yeah agreed, it somehow feels weird that they are so into esports, a few of them infact have schools where children are taught to be professionals in games, besides the games profit from esport and their tournaments and hence the popularity, but I dont appreciate esports taking a lead over the actual sport, that would indeed be scary
"the unpredictable magic of two teams going up against each other on a Saturday evening is something that humans, at least the ones behind Athletic Interest, will always be drawn to. The live sports experience can never be replicated through social media." YES, SIIIIIR!!
I work 10 hours as a 22 year old. I ain’t even got a tv… I don’t really got time to watch a game for 2 hours while I could use that to sleep 🤷🏻♂️ still love futbol tho
@@billymarshall8084 I get that but isn’t it more convenient to watch highlights of your favorite team while waiting or being on the bus or train? Yeah I’ll watch a game if I have the day off of course…I’ll watch it on my laptop
Most games are on Saturdays or in the evening. It's weird you don't have time to watch football. I feel you don't love football as much as you say you do, because it's easy to know when your team is playing and schedule time
Im 21 recently, and I watch nothing but sports Football is my number 1, I don't mind sitting all day watching the beautiful game, even if I support none of the teams playing
I could relate this. As a cricket fan I loved to watch full cricket matches but that thing seems to be dying for me . I just watch the important one's or only the world cup matches. One of the reasons for my drift from the sports must be the time I have to devote towards my studies 🙂
Hey akshat, that was the main reason why I started preferring football over cricket. Now I can watch 90 mins of play without any ads break. The problem with cricket is it's formats are long and ads breaks really sucks.
@@akshat4311 yes this is true if love a sport truely you will support it against any odds. See the thing was I watched cricket because my friends,my father did but it wasn't from my heart but was a kind of a peer pressure. But with football I just love to play and watch.
me too I have watched fewer live games every season since I started watching heavily in 2017 A huge drop off was when Messi started losing form so I didn't really have many games to look up to School and my freelance career also plays a big part But now that Haaland is at Man City, I have something to look forward to as I essentially support 4 teams Arsenal, City, PSG, Barcelona
This channel always sorprends me. The topics they discuss are so original yet necessary but totally unspoken about anywhere else. Absolutely brilliant each and every video. One of the most underrated channels on RU-vid.
I am from India, I remember me and my brother used to stay up till 2:00am to watch premier league and we still do. I cant name a single kid who does that now but sadly they play alot of Mobile games. Sad.
I basically stopped following football because the games were always late in the night because I would have basically no productivity the next dau PLUS NOBODY IN MY FRIEND GROUP cared about football, everyone cared about cricket and mostly social media So I basically stooped following PL or football in a nutshell.
Watching sports is like watching a highly anticipated thriller film every now and then. You don't know what's gonna happen, who'll win who'll lose...boy how can the younger gens stay without these! In my country the matches start either midnight or in the very early morning, but those are totally worth it. And athletic interest, what a beautiful content! Wish to see more!! (And yeah, try to make content about underrated sports, such as volleyball, handball, hockey etc...they deserve some attention too)
I’m a part of the younger generation. But honestly. Watching highlights on RU-vid is kinda trash compared to watching it live. You can see the comments so it’s kinda spoiled by the top comments. Watching it live is like omg what’s gonna happen next
We’d watch games more If we didnt have to illegally stream them as it’s either too expensive or games just aren’t shown. Like in the UK 3pm kick offs or somert like that. Let’s also not forget the fact there’s sometimes 3-4 different broadcasters for games. Only the rich (majority of whom are older people) can afford it.
I have to disagree on this for myself but i can understand this for other people. I am 18 and i pay for 3 diffirent football tv/youtube subscription and am season ticket holder at my local club FC Twente. It also helps that in Netherlands there are 2 Champions League games and 2 Europa/Conference League games live every matchday aswell as either 1 Ziggo Sport or ESPN channel depending on the provider
Watching live football and watching highlights aren't the same. Imagine watching your team lifting ucl trophy live and lifting it in highlights. Just no. Maybe applicable for American sports
@@AthleticInterest nah bro that’s just Americans. Most Europeans and Africans will watch their team play 90m. And football is the most popular sports so it’s not easy to grow it compared to F1 or nfl/nba
@@mohamedadan1553 im american and most of us watch the full 90 min. But when your football game comes on I’m at school or it’s mid day so I’m busy. But plp here watch the full games
f1’s marketing strategy worked exactly as intended on me. i didn’t even know what f1 was 2 years ago and now after drive to survive and becoming interested with my friends, i watch every race live 😂
me too the RU-vid strategy is amazing and the content from F1 related channels (commentary, discussions, etc) such as DRIVER91 or others is extremely high quality now compare that to Football Daily or OneFootball who make videos in a Pub half drunk with 5 minute editing
watching only key highlights won’t give the satisfaction, suspense, goosebumps and above all the emotional ride we go through the 90 mintues of football ..
how the Athletic Interest manages to produce banger after banger never cease to amaze me... you guys definitely deserve x10 the amount of subs (but i also know that watchtime & retention is more important nowadays which you perfected haha)
In a world where instant satisfaction is king, watching a 90 minutes game of football where the ball is passed around for 90% of the time is not going to attract many people. That’s why people watch highlights
Gen Z kids definitely don't "value their time" more. They'll easily spend hours flicking through TikTok. They just have much shorter attention spans because of how these social media sites are designed.
@@kumaransivan9688 Nah it’s definitely shorter attention spans. Sports are niche as it is, so any emerging markets coming up will only shrink that pie.
Don't they dare take away what i love from me. Just coz I check my phone for a bit during a boring phase of play doesn't mean that the sport is meaningless to broadcast altogether. Damn i really hope more young people watch it.
Another fantastic video. Athletic Interest is perhaps the best channel about sports on yt. I got into F1 by watching one of it's video, followed the exact same route to drive to survive and now watching F1 since Monza
I was extremely confused under a Highlights video why people say "I only watch the highlights, it's much better than watching live" and it was the most liked comment. I just did not get it why people don't like watching sports live. This video explained it very well!
This also applies to playing vide games, often times nowadays you feel to watch tik tok or netflix and feel lazy to play games , they give you instant gratification instead of you needing to go through the effort of playing video games
To me it’s very simple, I don’t want to watch a game live for the sole purpose of there being ads and commercials in the middle and of an event. So I only watch important games or sports that have practically none of that.
I am one of the people who came from the pipeline you mentioned(short clips- RU-vid videos- live broadcast). It wasn't like I was not a sports fan as an Indian I would watch cricket entire day. And football seasonly through my childhood but couldn't watch it for 90 straight minutes. The main reason being I just wasn't invested enough, I didn't knew the characters, the stakes, the tactics etc. So when I started watching reels and it feeded me short, interesting clips from which I got invested in the sport and the characters, then I started watching videos like highlights and stories etc. And now I have come around to watching live games. Previously kids used to watch games with their parents even if they didn't want to and then get hooked to the sport now kids have internet and can watch anything they want so it becomes harder to invest them into the sport at early age.
I’m an adamant football fan. Ever since my father took me to England to watch the Manchester derby when Man Utd won 4-3, I was obsessed. I don’t care if Man Utd are being gutted by Ole at the moment, I still love them. I would put aside 90 minutes of my life to watch my favorite team play, social media won’t stop me.
Nothing beats a full 90 minutes of football, reminds me a bit of what happened to Cricket a while ago regarding Test Cricket and the evolution of Twenty20 format.
Nowadays kids have no patience to watch a full game. They would instead see live scores.Although I am a kid but I am huge lover of football,Cricket and basketball.
I think it is pretty different the type of content between a sport game and a movie or a song. A sport game is tight to its end result, that's why people watch it. A song or a movie is an experience that you can always re-watch or re-listen to over and over. Fron that point, broadcasting companies need to do something different if they want to increase or retain customers. Good point by bringing F1 as an example. Laveraging social media is a great tool that businesses can't miss, if they like it or not.
I can't imagine being the guy who is playing a song about the world ending over the intro of a video about why youngins these days don't watch TV sports.
Although Spotify and other music platforms were able to disrupt the music industry but live concerts are still irreplaceable and receive all the hype. Same with live sports, be it on TV or In Stadium, the fact that it’s unpredictable and exciting only if consumed live will make it for platform like TikTok to replace
In the old days, sitting in front of the TV at 8.45pm to watch sports news highlights was the best part of growing up. Live football games are on free to air TV. Nowadays not only nearly all live games are behind paywall, even highlights are no longer available in the evening news sports section. When this start to happen few years ago, I just lost interest in football. Watching it has become too difficult and expensive.
How is this channel so amazing but it only has less than 500K subs??? I see this channel becoming elite very soon. I am just always in awe with how great your research is
This also reminds me of why Baseball (despite declining popularity) never truly lost its spot on Sunday TV... because people dont watch it.. people turn their TV on, and have something shown for hours without the hassle of watching every minute of it.. its a game for old people to watch before they decide to turn to Golf
Baseball is on a crossroads, TV ratings are not good, but social media is growing quite a lot, is the first of the big 4 to broadcast games on youtube and the second to broadcast games in a big social media (NFL with Twitter/Twitch) was the first one I am younger than 25, i like to watch baseball online but sometimes I like to watch like you just had said
@@superninja252 baseball has always been a laid back sport for the better part of its history.. and i think its also the part of its appeal. i also enjoy the fact that every game has some significant higlight moments that keep it interesting.. and if theres something that saves baseball is its regional/hometown core audience that keeps it profitable, plus the gambling side of bookies
You can watch baseball on RU-vid!? I might watch a baseball game for the first time ever! All these things are so tied down to expensive antiquated technology that requires you to have a television. Pretty cool that they recognize that athleticism is something that even non-rich people could enjoy.
@@csmlyly5736 it used to be broadcasted until last year I think you can see some 2021 and some classic games they had broadcasted on youtube on last few years I don't know if they will continue this year beacuse it look Apple will got their rights but who knows?
As a barca fan living in Singapore, Its tough to watch live games which can often be at 3am over here. Yet I absolutely love it and almost watch every game because there's so much you can learn from live games that highlights dont show.
Some years ago you may realize the streets full of people watching, feeling the pasion and sharing beers because of football matchs, then, they started with high prices with private pay per view and currently almost nobody take care or even talking each other about football... Young and adult people.
I think these stats are overstated and if anything are used by bad actors such as Agnelli to create a closed league model to protect the viability of their clubs. Football is very much a part of the European life, it wont simply end as Agnelli says. The reason I find USA sports sad is that you only have 30 teams or so representing a country of 300million. Keep Sports open!
I'm happy to admit the F1 strategy worked on me. Even though I loved motorsport, I'd never properly followed F1. It started with keeping up with their RU-vid race highlights, and I'd just watch that. Then Instagram stories for F1 moments. Then DTS came out and sparked an interest in knowing the drivers and drama between them. And then it became a case of watching races on Sky and then qualifying and races. Amazing marketing!
I’m 17, I started watching F1 4 years ago and now I don’t miss a minute of any GP. I’d also like to note that my interest didn’t come from social medias and Drive to Survive wasnt a thing at the time (luckily)
I'm 14 and I hate watching the highlights if I can't find the whole game. The reason is that I play as left-back, so when I watch the highlights it is only goals and maybe some good saves by the GK. But rarely are there any clips of good tackles, smart blocks, or strategic passes by defensive players. Another reason is that the whole game is fun to watch as it can be more emotional.
It's not the game imo, it's the price of the package. Gen Z isn't dumb enough to pay 50$+ for a subscription. Make it cheap for everyone and you will get a ton of subscriptions and thus more viewers watching full games.
I think this video gets it a bit wrong. I’m not sure of the sources you used but in my experience (I’m 17) most people I know love watching live sports and would sit through 90 mins of football 6x per week no problem if they could. This is the generation who will binge watch whole series in one sitting. Personally, I’m an F1 fan and I regularly watch all 3 hours of practice, an hour of qualifying then a 2 hour race. The issue for most sports fans is not the amount of time it takes to watch the sport but the amount of money required. For example, a sky sports with BT sport and all the channels needed to watch every premier league game costs £65 per month in the UK which is simply too much for most young people to afford. This is the driving factor in declining viewership; not that young fans get bored. Highlights on the other hand are usually free to watch which probably explains why fans are more likely to tune in. Stupid experiments like sprint races in F1 wont bring new fans into live sport: reducing the cost to watch it will.
I'm already 20 and I watched football religiously till I was like 14 and then I fell in love with DotA 2 and it's eSports scene. Haven't looked back since. Yes, You were right, As I grew older I didn't have much patience watching through 90 mins where nothing rarely happens. In eSports, Games are just under 40mins and there's always action so I prefer that.
As an 18 year old now, i can say that the f1 thing is true. I started seeing f1 on insta via merc and mclaren, etc than found out the drive to survive series and then f1 youtube highlight. Now i sit for over 10 hours a week end just to watch qualifying , pre race, race, after race and sometimes also fp1-3 if it is interesting enough
Biggest problem to me is that sports and leagues are split up all over the place. I don’t want to pay for separate streaming subscriptions to watch UCL, prem, la liga, f1, nba, etc. because it adds up so quickly.
It's sad but true. I'm a junior high school student and i am the only one who is a football fan in my school. My friends prefer e-sports more than real sports
Besides all the aforementioned aspects, one thing that keeps me from watching are the increasing ethical issues. The financial level football has reached seems unsustainable. Add the private owners and their insane sponsorships, and you create a situation were many people are disgusted. It goes against anything we grew up looking for in a football club. And the way UEFA and FIFA act diminishes my hope for a better future. At least with F1 I know what I get. It's ethical issues are well communicated and also worked on. They try to become more responsible and open, whilst FIFA wants to make even more profit through a WC every two years.
I always try to watch football games live whenever possible although it is hard to watch the games live as they are played after 12:00 am in my country due to the time difference
For sure Liberty Media and F1 are nailing it and their model seems to be working in getting GenZ in. 👏👏👏 Great video as always Athletic Interest.... just brilliant 👌👌
Nothing beats watching live sport. The finale of the F1 Championship was an awesome example of it. The uknown of what will happen, watching all the events happen in real time it is just awesome. Living in Australia I wake up early mornings or stay up late nights to watch premier league and CL games or other European sports. Live sport is the best and always will be.
When I get up early to watch my Man City games here in the states. I turn my phone off & don't look at it at all until the game is over. Plenty of young people still watch the games live because watching highlights will never compare to watching a game live & enjoying the excitement in the moment. (I'm in my 20's too & also, anybody who wants to call me a plastic fan, just go away)
if you were born 10 years sooner, you would NOT be a Man City fan. (they were horrible much of the 90s, early 2000s)...you are just a product of your time.
I think sports is going to change into a more fast-paced option for example Cricket test matches used to be 5 days long and at this point, the most popular sport is 20/20 which lasts only 2 hours.
Watching highlights isn't what i'd prefer as a 14y/o girl. When you already know the scores there's no point of watching the highlights too... watching a game live is something else as everything is uncertain there.
It was never the end, we just don't bother unless it's easily accessible on our main devices, whether it's a computer or phone. It's just a matter of adapting to convenience.
As a 17yo ''kid'' I don't know what kids are these that prefer to see highlights than the games, never met them, I will always prefer to see full matches, either at the stadium or TV, as a matter of fact I will watch a Final group stage game of Champions League this week with my friends at the stadium, but yeah, kids don't want it... whatever
Im a huge NBA fan, and they're making their own product unwatchable. Like really, u have games starting +20 minutes late, obligatory timeouts to shovel more ads, they cut plays and the starts of quarters to show even more ads, they even put the game in a tiny window to show MORE ads. It's unbearable, and when the game it's close it's a shit show between the challenges, refs calling whatever shit they want, taking 10 minutes to review pretty obvious plays, the foul + timeout strategy. I understand that ads make the money for the players, but it's on a point on where i literally prefer to read reddit and see the results, watch highlights on YT and maybe watch full games come playoffs time, it's ridiculous.
I'm 16 and would rather watch the clips of a match than live, but if it is an international tournament like the world Cup it's a whole different thing, I watch every second of every match.
Perhaps this is simply a trait for younger people. I'm a Gen Z myself and as I grew older I started to watch matches more astutely... even for matches where my team isn't playing.
I have to admit I love shortclips of bangers, skills or crunching tackels accompanied by some fitting music. But it can't replace the trill you get watching your team play a crucial game.
