The “Alpha Mode” theory is the one I find to be most compelling. In the episode of race to the edge where storm fly is “poisoned” by the slitherwings, you see stormfly produce a new type of blast that she hadn’t been able to do before. This could the nadder’s alpha mode.

It's clearly stated that Toothless isn't a full adult quite yet. I rather thought that at the end Toothless' power bost was a combo of discovering his full adult abilities and new alpha mode.

Ok let’s say that toothless is a titanwing for a second, and he’s able to decide when he’s glowing and when he’s not. If this were the case, and he only ever shows the fact that he’s a titanwing in times when he absolutely needs to assert himself, I’d argue it’s more of a humbleness thing. Also how is he supposed to be stealth if he’s constantly glowing in the dark and revealing himself? If anything, becoming glow in the dark out in the wild where they would have to hunt would be detrimental to his process. The reason a night fury is called a night fury in the first place is because it comes out of NOWHERE with striking precision. Constantly glowing would defeat the purpose of being a night fury.

My theory is that toothless was just learning things that other nightfuries could already do, sense we never see any other ones, nobody was their to teach toothless things like the lightning blast, or the invisibility, that the clearly not titanwing lightfury did just fine, and as they are basically the same species, it would make sense that, toothless was just unlocking abilities, or gaining understanding of its abilities, rather than becoming a titanwing, and if it does become a titanwing, it will probably become undoubtabely the strongest dragon we have ever seen

It's feasable to considder is that Toothless did become a Titan, however as he's still so young the change only tempory. When he does grow up however it would be easier for him to become a Titan as an adult.

That would make for an interesting plot: Hiccup gets afraid that now that Toothless has healed his tail he won't need him anymore, and overreacts and actually unwittingly pushes Toothless away and there is a misunderstanding and Hiccup thinks Toothless really abandoned him as he feared; then we spend most of the movie alternatingly following Hiccup's struggle with finding who he is without Toothless, and Toothless' struggle with being abandoned, a huge impact on his self-esteem and stuff, and with readjusting to life in the wild; then some big-bad comes to town and they reunite to save everyone, but not before Hiccup stubbornly tries to do things by himself and fails; the movie ends with Hiccup realizing Toothless completes him more than he does Toothless, and yet in spite of Toothless not needing him anymore he still chooses to stay because they're friends. ps: If lawyers are watching: I unconditionally grant all rights to this idea to the people responsible for making HTTYD movies and related franchise works, and swear to not sue over any copyright issue, or similar matter, in regards to this idea. And while I would, of course, appreciate receiving a percentage of any associated revenue (including, but not restricted to, from sales of merchandise and derived works in other formats like for example games, books, comics etc), and a mention in the credits; I swear to not demand any form of compensation for this idea. So since nightfuries may be a cave dwelling and/or a nocturnal species, this might just be a naturally occurring visual display for low-light conditions? A sort of display of dominance intended for other nightfuries potentially.

I like how you noted that Toothless's shot count is "about six". XD I've noticed the variations in his shot limit, too. I counted ten shots fired during the final showdown against the Red Death in the first film, and depending on how long it takes a dragon's shot limit to "recharge", you might consider the one shot fired to save Hiccup from Hookfang as an eleventh. Perhaps Toothless has a shot limit, but he can recoup it so fast, it's essentially irrelevant. (That's what I like to think. lol) (I also have no idea which Hogwarts house I'm in.)

this might be kind of weird but most titan wings don't go well with humans and maybe toothless knew that so he stopped being a titan wing because he doesn't want to hurt hiccup and when he knows that hiccup is in a lot of danger he is scared of losing hiccup he turns his titan wing mode on because he is more advanced than other dragons so he might be able to switch it on and off so he turns it on when hiccup is in a lot of danger because he could die making him that much stronger being able to protect him

It is an interesting theory, it just leaves out something pretty basic. Toothless saw Hiccup about to die! His closest friend. The human who saved his life, allowed him to fly again, gave him a home and food, helped him to do the unthinkable: Defeat a Queen! Free his fellow dragons and give them a life they could never have imagined. If someone that important to you was about to be killed, wouldn't you be angry? Wouldn't you have completely lost it? Toothless went Berserk! When that happens for a human your internal temperature rises to high fever levels which increases the body's healing factor. Adrenalin spikes far past even exercise levels giving you overwhelming strength, agility, stamina and an almost super-normal intimidation factor. All of these things have entire books written about them after years of study. If you look at toothless' action's you will see all of these.

My theory is that Toothless has always been a Titanwing. Light Fury is the original form. Think about it- Toothless is VERY rare(possibly last of his kind) is bigger(from what i can tell) and is differently coloured. Just a theory.

Titan wings are generally born titan wings. Most times a dragon is large and notably different from others of the species in terms of things like claws and spines, things that don't just grow in after they are adults like Toothless.

Toothless is not of age but he still mite have a titan wing change latter on that stays. Toothless could have just tapped in to the ability of a titan wing and show features of what he would look like as a titan wing if and or when he becomes a titan wing the reason for this is rather protective or in an alpha state like you said in the video. Toothless is a dragon with a kind that seems to be gone or never to be seen again and most likely to have many secrets to uncover. but this is just all a theory I have.

Well maybe it's just because he challenged/is the alpha (I'm just going off the 2nd movie) because we have only ever seen bewilder beasts (sorry if I butchered the name) as alphas so maybe this is what an alpha night fury looks like. Idk I don't really have any evidence besides the fact that we've only seen 1 particular dragon as the alpha

Put you in a crazy house! Lol! I think that toothless is beginning to be a titan class Dragon. He can only use the power when the need is dire. Like Goku becoming SS1 vs freiza for the first time. However I think that this drains his energy and he has to recuperate from the output. I think that's why he let all the other dragons attack the alpha afterwards. Not as tired as eragon when he used his first spell, but as Brom said, it's up to you to figure out the limits of your strength. Paraphrase, if you use something before your ready, it could leave you weak or kill you.

I did some research a while back, and this ability that Toothless gained is called a “Challenger” Mode or something like that. All dragons that aren’t Alpha’s themselves, are able to go into this mode to challenge an Alpha. It’s why we never see Toothless use this ability in the movies after this battle, because it can only be used against an Alpha.

my theory would be that it is a titan wing form but since toothless isnt mature yet its not a permanent form and more of temporarily powerboost. it would make sense that its not a permanent form since the titanwing form comes with permanent visual altererations it would fit that a dragon needs to be mature and his body needs to be fully developed

so i think when toothless started to glow in httyd 2 was just a part of his titan wing form, then after a couple of years, when he grows up to be a fully titan wing in httyd 3, as you can see toothless gets the thunder power like the skrill ( and yes i like to call it thunder power). thats what im thinking. or maybe if i remmember correctly hiccup was 20 in httyd 2 and i think thats an adult cuz its over 18 and valka said that toothless is the same age as hiccup so he might've just been old enough and powerfull and also lucky enough to become a titan wing in httyd 3. thats what im thinking of. ( and im pretty sure he was 20 in httyd 2 because hiccup said something like "thats where you've been for 20 years?"

If you watch the trailer for how to train your dragons 3 you see these markings again with him controlling lightning so he has become a titan wing as you say but he learned how to control the sparks of the sky :3 I think it’s pretty cool including if you know They added something in my opinion the new Light fury as they say is white when toothless is black they are the full elements of night fury and are meant to be together the light fury is white when toothless is black and that makes them Yen and Yang I still have to learn more about it but I rest my case because I just came to recognize that they are yen and yang and that Toothless is the titan wing but is he something more (cough cough Thor cough) XD anyway like I said is he something more Edit:#ScrillisTootlessesmom including that the sand wrath is related to toothless :3 they are bruddas

I think you're right about the Alpha thing. His new abilities were just a display, a discovery of the abilities he already had but didnt know it.

So in How to Train Your Dragon 2 at the end toothless starts glowing blue and then it's assumed he's a Titan Wing but then How to Train Your Dragon 3 he has the ability to summon lightning to his back and become invisible like the light. Whatever it's not much of a Titan Wing when they get bigger and stronger but it's a a Titan Wing is whenever they unlock their full power

After watching the trailer for HTTYD 3, I think he might be. At the end of the trailer toothless is harnessing lightning (like a skrill!) but he is glowing blue like in HTTYD 2.... Perhaps because he is such an evolved dragon he can control when this happens, like hes an evolved titanwing or something..

If toothless put on the glowing form as a display of dominance. My theory is that this display mimics the titan wing form of other dragons. Tricking other dragons into thinking he is more powerful than he actually is. Evolution in action

One thing I notice with the Rise of Berk titan wing Night Fury, it looks like the secondary wings (or whatever you would call them) seem much longer than the regular fury, so maybe the alpha mode is -similar- to Titan Wing, but not quite the same?

What if they are titan wing powers but not permanent because he is not yet fully grown so his body is incapable of adapting to the permanent use of the powers so the return to dormant after the need for them has passed.

He isn’t a titan he just tapped into the titan wing form to save him and his partner Hiccup. The bond between Hiccup and Toothless is so strong it allowed him to be a titan for a short time.
