Love the idea of a digital business card! Such a fantastic way of fostering transparency.

Thank you for this video. I'm a low level coach in a low level rink. I don't get much out of PSA (although I love the magazine). I've felt for a long time that PSA is of more benefit to high level coaches. I'm sure there will be growing pains in the switchover to US Figure Skating's umbrella. I like that online business card! If lookup by rink or area is included, I can check for compatible coaches at other rinks should my students want a lesson while traveling or need a coach at a distant competition. Guess we'll see how this all unfolds. 🙂

I'm a grassroots coach too! But, I do get a ton out of PSA's ratings system. My hope is that U.S. Figure Skating will make certifications more accessible especially to those of us that do not have access to Master-rated coaches!

Wow that is a lot to mentally digest Aimée. As a parent of a figure skater, I can see the desire and possibly the need to implement changes to make items more centralized and simplistic. However, if there are areas in the current system that could benefit from change, then I would think those areas should be the priority over a broader and most likely inconvenient change. I think it is good to have the coaches complete continual education if it is relevant. Attending seminars, online training, and participating in events at the conference should count. There is a lot of specialties for coaches to develop such as working with children that have challenging behaviors, Sports Psychology… I do not believe obtaining new skaters is an issue, but retaining skaters is an issue. I see this especially in academy semester group classes. In the first few weeks, you cannot find a seat to watch your kid; near the middle of the semester, sit anywhere you like. Not sure of the members-only system to find a coach is a good idea. Unless some major money were put into a national advertisement, I cannot see how this would be a valuable tool to promote a coach’s service. From my experience, skaters are normally referred to coaches by either the ice rink staff, director, or other coaches. I could not image how a person wanting to get into ice skating would know to search a members-only site for a coach. It’s like those “Been Verified” sites for everything from babysitters to mechanics. Those sites are a nice tool, but when I look for a reputable service, I ask those I trust. Not sure what to say on the parent story of you “up selling them” other rink time and whatnot. What’s next, the parent is going to accuse you of getting a percentage from getting skaters to enter competitions? Any new system or changes in the way of doing something is going to be challenging. However, if the system becomes more inclusive for coaches; then these changes could be reverted or changed to become more intuitive.

It is a lot to digest! Currently, all coaches are required to take continuing education requirements each year. The way it works now is there are packages that are required. This is all in addition to anything else that you may have taken such as attending a seminar, conference, or a related course. You can see them for yourself here: skatepsa.site-ym.com/store/ListProducts.aspx?catid=820419 I hear you on the retention side of things! IMHO - U.S. Figure Skating would be wise to create material that skating academy's could distribute when skater's register to better manage expectations. Often, skaters and parents tell me that they felt their skater should have been doing Axels by the end of the Basic 1 8-week class. It's just a matter of bridging the information gap, which is what I try to do with this channel ;) I am dubious about the Members Only area being viable as a marketing tool for the same reasons that you mentioned. Often it's the skating director or staff that refer skaters to their private lessons coaches. As for your comment about "upselling," for the record, we don't make anything off skaters registering for competitions either...lol! We''l have to see how this goes. But, I am sad that PSA will no longer play the role that it has and I don't know what the future is for the organization as its role has been to offer continuing education, rankings, and ratings. Previously, PSA was also the organization that we could turn to for grievances and liability insurance. However, in 2020 that all went away as well. So, I really don't know where this leaves the organization now. Thank you for taking the time to leave a thoughtful comment. I appreciate you!

On one hand, I feel that way, and I'm concerned about the fate of the PSA. On the other hand, I feel like the USOC gave them a directive that they have to follow, and there will be benefits to bringing it in-house.
