I'm traveling to the US and I am curious to see if my opinions about the US have been negatively affected by US media. Before coming to China, I had a bad opinion about China, because of the western media, but the truth was very different from the reports. Now, I have been outside of the US for a long time and my opinions of my home country have changed. The question is "Have I been brainwashed by US media?"
What do you think? As the US gotten worse in the last 5 years? Or is it just social media and news sites pushing the most shocking stories for clicks?

For the last few years the US has had led the field in gun violence, by a lot, and it is way up. more guns = more gun violence. it should be noted that some countries don't have the mental healthcare problems the US has, so a better formula is more guns + mental health crisis with part of those people self medicating = more gun violence. The US has more gun violence than the rest of the world combined x3. The worst "inflation" market is related to real estate, its costs as much to rent in the middle of Paris as it does to rent in Lakeland, Florida. This of course ties over to homelessness, the US has also altered the way they keep statistics on homelessness, they use to include weekly renters, they are "housing insecure", now they don't, they also consider people living in their cars as housed, "vehicle dwellers". There is no national policy, what many cities do is bus homeless people out, for the price of a bus ticket they solved their homeless problem, this of course is a problem. I should add that inflation isn't really inflation, its supply side market, I live in the part of Atlanta that all the tech millennials want to live in, there are about 3,000 vacant apartments just in my neighborhood, this is by design, they profit more from elevated prices than setting a fair price that rents all the apartments in a building. Having worked in housing I thought I was doing a bang up job until someone hit me aside the head with a fundamental truth, capitalism is about profit, whatever produced is secondary. Developers aren't really out to build housing, they are out to generate profit. When you understand this you understand better where supply side economics comes from, you can tweak and twist and increase profit by doing less.

I'm an elderly person--lived in the Portland, Oregon are most of my life, and am fortunate to be able to live in HUD housing. when my husband died i could no longer afford to stay in our apartment. I live in a small town outside of Portland, and will no longer go into Portland itself due to increasing violence and it is true that one must walk around sidewalks where the homeless tents make it impossible to use the sidewalks. Our drug issue is out of control, and much homelessness is a result of drug use and mental health issues. I volunteer at my church's Feed the Hungry every Sunday and the majority of our guests have mental health issues. Some families are living in their vehicles with their children because the rent has soared. I have a master's degree in psychology and am amazed at what I see. If you want a thrill--go grocery shopping--prices HAVE soared---often you have to pay more for an item than you did two seeks ago. if I had been told about all this years ago, I would have thought you were nuts. Crime has also soared and many children in their schools have been killed with AK 47 type guns in their schools, My son who is a sign hanger refuses to go into some parts of Portland. It's like the world (our world) has gone crazy. And medical care is so expensive that many needs are not met unless you are on medicare or have benefits at work. Actually, if I was younger, I would come to China and check that out. I so appreciate all that you do--I'm so mad that I have become an independent, not wanting my name associated with either major party. Thanks for listening.

You don't think that the political destruction of the Middle-class and the resulting poverty and homelessness has more to do with this more than just drug use, which too is a product of the war on the American working class by our corporate owned politicians created and propagate. Give a read to the Lewis Powell Memo on the internet, and consider Citizens United stake in all this.

As an American who has lived abroad for 43 years, I too have these questions. I do know that when I go “home” I am aware of the poverty. The people look stressed and unwell. It’s noticeable. I mention it to family but they do not see what I see. The lack of prosperity is visible, in the homes and businesses and in the people.

I have been living abroad for nearly 40 years. Even when I was visiting annually, I would often notice unpleasant changes like you have. I have not been back in more than 10 years now, and I dread what I might encounter. Because I am aware of media untruths in the US regarding a whole range of topics, I already know that I would not be welcome just from telephone conversations--being asked personal questions that I really do not want to answer on the one hand, and having to bite my tongue as I listen to lies about places like Russia and China. My face would give away my opinion if I went back. There are landscapes I long to see--but what would I have to endure to reach those places? Would I even be allowed to? I think precious memories may be too important to disturb with ugly experiences and disappointments. But I am dying to know what others like me are actually seeing there.

As a European the constant talk of “freedom” by Americans used to baffle me. Why do they keep banging on about it? No one talks about being free in Europe just as no one talks about breathing air - it’s just a given. Then I realised, when a society constantly has to remind itself how free they are, then something’s not quite right. Unfortunately, the US has Freedom written in its constitution but not in its culture. Freedom comes from how people actually treat each other, not from a piece of paper. EDIT: The World Press Freedom Index ranks the US as having the 45th freest press in the world…45th!

So well said! It’s so strange to observe the American smile if you have been away long enough. In Asia, when you see smiles, it’s very heart warming and sincere. In Europe, when a local smiles at you, you can feel it’s realness because they’re NOT obligatory and often times, they don’t smile easily ( esp N European) but when they do, you know it’s real.

I recently got into a bit of a spat with someone on X over a video of this group of robbers barging into a shop and ransacked it in broad daylight. The guy insisted that it's "not too bad", no one was harmed and US is still safe. It was like that kind of behaviour has somewhat been accepted. The people have normalised to their predicaments and would take offence if you tell them otherwise. So yeah... Maybe it's best if you don't say anything and don't them tell about China otherwise they would be offended and call you a communist. 😅

However you can still find yourself a bubble where you wouldn’t really see much of it. I do think that depending where you visit it may be hard to spot. Compost Bin fee NO dumpster pile garbage fee, NO sewage fee, Restructuring the water usage billing system , where out bill goes up 10% annually, Electricity bills , it fluctuate, so each homeowner diligence to watch out and grab if there's long term cheaper rate . Etc etc , Previously , our 911 ambulance service is free , Not anymore , Include fire-truck when they arrive , or when they left the fire-hall . That 'bubble' is most of America, though. Statistically, crime/homelessness/major drug issues are highest in very few areas; mostly cities. Even within cities that are 'known' for crime or other bad behavior, it's typically more or less isolated to certain sections of a city.

The flawed premise of the American dream was based on continuous growth from which the middle class (as they were once called) got a sizeable share and improved their lifestyle comfort each generation. This was based on the implicit assumption that United States would dominate world economy by hook and by crook and other people around the world would keep subsidizing the lavish lifestyle of ordinary, mostly white Americans. Cheap oil, cheap manufactured goods, cheap food etc. The mistaken belief in the validity of this arrangement eventually gave too much power to the capitalist class and they realized they don't have to share as much. Now that the rest of the world is standing up to the exploitation of their resources, since China/Russia/India can now offer some degree of a better deal to the global South in the long run, there will become less and less for the Iower classes to enjoy. Owning a car is too expensive, owning a house is too expensive, owning a flat is even becoming a pipedream for many, college is too expensive, Healthcare is too expensive. Basically, American middle class shot themselves in the foot, ironically as a result of their hatred and disdain for the poor people who used to be mostly made up of ethnic minorities. Divide and conquer has worked too well for the enemies of meritocracy.

It's also why the US keeps on importing over a million immigrants each year. US population is in decline, the only way to stop it is to import more people each year. With more people coming in each year it prompts up the economy, as well. The population of the US will never exceed over 400 million though. By 2100, the population will be pretty much the same as it is today, statistics shows. Unless the US started importing TONS of people, then it can exceed over 400 million.

What you’re hearing is absolutely true. Homelessness is everywhere. Tent cities and new prisons are popping up left and right. The zombie land too. You aren’t being lied to, unfortunately. Things are that bad in the US. No one can afford to live here. We are cramming more people into smaller spaces and overflowing into the streets while so much housing sits around unoccupied. I went to a dentist and paid half the bill upfront, which was $2,340, and after two visits they still haven't done anything. On top of that they cancelled my appointment Wednesday for abutment surgery and a tooth extraction! So basically I'm left with a tooth that will become an abscess if I stop taking antibiotics which I've taken for four damn weeks! The US is just filled with incompetent people in every profession and especially in politics. Canadian- and everything you talked about, it's all true. Groceries have gone through the roof, inflation in that regard has to be at least around 30-40% if not more. Tipping is insane, the homeless encampments in LA/SF seem exaggerated but they clearly exist- personally where I live they're much smaller, but if you go to a public park or something don't be surprised to see a few tents here and there. You talk about drugged-up "zombies"- and yeah, they exist too, in public transit, in parks, in the middle of the road, on the sidewalk openly pissing and shitting themselves- uncommon sights, sure, but I've seen all these examples, to give you an idea of how bad it is here. Dunno about the US in this regard though it seems to be the same or worse off than we are- but I'd say that the quality of life has sharply fallen in recent years and is steadily, visibly getting worse yet still. Between all this and the rampant Sinophobia/anti-Asian racism (I'm Asian) I have lost almost all hope for western society, and certainly almost all fondness for it as someone raised in it myself.

I live in San Francisco right across the street from Golden Gate Park and, surprisingly, the homelessness in GGP is, again surprisingly, nothing, NOWHERE become worse..... This is almost certain due to the fact that Golden Gate Park has a "no overnight dwelling" within GGPD and the park police and police in general have been VERY STRICT ABOUT ENFORCING. There ARE homeless within GGP but they are "out of sight" for the simple reason that they are "encamped" within the mass of huge bush and tree "forests" that the homeless can "hide out in". The other thing also is that while trailer encampments have skyrocketed across the city streets in SF, it has NOT happened along the streets that form the borders of GGP (Fulton street and Lincoln Blvd) as there has been a blanket STRICTELY ENFORCED "No Parking Longer than 72 Hours" restrictions that has been in place for decades.

Homelessness definitely a problem across the country (US), especially in the big cities. But now in Dec. Winter cold is here, you probably will see less of it out in open in northern States. Inflation is rough, walk into any restaurants & supermarket, prices will shock you, so will Rent. There's an uptick in crimes, especially petty crime in the big cities. Guns and Drugs uptick both true. All these vary depends on the zipcode, so people are moving away from the big cities, hence again the rent increase in the more desirable area. Look forward seeing your impression of US after 5 years.

Drug addiction like alcoholism is the disease of despair. When you become homeless, your life begins to fall apart. The people that you see living on the pavement are just the tip of the iceberg. Many people have moved into their cars. I have seen them changing their clothes out of the trunk of their car. They park in a different place every night and they continue to work. Once you become homeless it is almost impossible to get off the street because there are no apartments available and because of computerized background checks, you become a poor tenant risk, forever... TV stations like to blame the homeless for this situation but it goes much deeper. This society is preying on itself. Because of the “1990 Banking Modernization Act” Families are finding it impossible to build wealth through home ownership because of adjustable rate interest on mortgages. Banks engage in usurious lending with interest rates as high as 32%. College and higher education has become an upper class privilege or a risky debt trap for the middle class. Out sourcing of jobs to Asia was probably a necessary trend for business but no consideration was given the people left behind in terms of infrastructure or education opportunities. Even putting people in prison is considered a money making opportunity...

I already knew the US propaganda lies since the start of the Hongkong protest in 2019. To add to their lies are the Uighur 'genocide' issue, Tibet and Taiwan. I distrust anything from the western media, especially from the US. I watched a lot of foreign vloggers in Xinjiang and Tibet and the modernity and development were amazing. The quality of living has improved for them and nothing beats seeing is believing.

Infrastructure in shambles, urban sprawl that make everyone sick, huge drug problems, most expense healthcare in the western world with a declining life expectancy, education in science is replaced by religious non-sense, a wasteful department of war overseeing 800 military installations in the world, highest income disparity, corporate controlled media propaganda of denial of denigration, highest incarceration in the world, all branches of a corrupt government (from city to federal) controlled by the billionaire parasites. Billions of taxpayer money wasted on overseas wars but no money to solve homeless crisis, total lack of social justice driven by greed and selfishness of the rich elite. Miguel, I can honestly say that tipping is expected just about everywhere and not like 10% for mediocre service and 15% for good service and on up. 15 to 20% seems to be expected nowadays. I can also vouch for the increased cost of living, especially when you eat out. Groceries have gone up but some things have moderated, e.g. price of eggs skyrocketed to $4+ a dozen (large) and have backed down to about $2.50. I live in the suburbs and don’t see much homelessness like in the city and I see gun violence on the news all the time but have the good fortune to not encounter any such hazards personally. I hope this helps.

Yes, they are. That's why I stopped watching all US/Western media. When I do sometimes watch them, I never take it serious. The scary thing about guns is that you could randomly get shot just walking around casually. A few women recently got shot and killed by stray bullets. They were just minding their own business, then out nowhere a bullet struck them. I get scared walking around outside because of this. It's like when there is thunder(there doesn't even need to be thunder, it could be a clear blue sky), you never know when you will get struck by lightning. As for tips and stuff. Whenever I go to fast food place now, they always ask me if I would like to donate money to children hospital or something like that. I did a few times, actually. At some stores when I'm pay with my debit card, on the screen it ask me if I want to tip. It's so awkward cause the person is standing right there waiting for me to pay. When I click no tip, they just stare at me.

I live 20 mins east of Los Angeles. What’s once considered a bubble, it’s now definitely more crimes taking place. Mostly home invasions and street robberies. However, that’s nothing comparing to big cities such as Los Angeles or San Francisco. I have two kids, each live in those cities. You literally have to watch your back. Homeless encampments everywhere. We once made a comment while looking out of my daughters high rise apartment, that the homeless encampment in front of her building went from tiny house to a mansion, with front yard, back yard and even a pool. My kids each personally know people that had gotten physically assault or harassed on the streets. It’s sad but true what you hear. May not be as brutal as it shows in media but definitely becoming more and more of a problem.

I live in suburban Los Angeles. I see an explosion of homeless tents in downtown LA, under freeway bridges, parks, etc. I've seen it in Seatle and Vancouver, BC during my trips last month. I see a lot of drugged out individuals walking around. It's scary to be out late. I don't do that anymore. Anyway, depending on where you are, you probably don't see homeless tents right where you live, but rather at public parks, civic centers, downtown, freeway underpasses, etc. Everything is true with what you said about tipping. They stick an Ipad-like to you with tips options while watching and waiting for you to pay. You would feel pressured to tip while they are waiting and watching you. Another things, porch pirates are very common. People will steal your shopping packages at your front porch, even if you live in nice neighborhoods. Everything is much more expensive now than 5 years ago. I just had an car alternator replaced on my car and had to pay almost $800 for it. I couldn't sleep for a couple of nights thinking about it. lol...

For continued growth and success of the working class, they need to produce more value than they cost. But in reality wages go up and working longer hours aren't helping productivity. Eventually automation will replace everyone as the tech is getting better and cheaper than hiring unionised staff. People always ignore me when I say this but there are so many jobs that already have been replaced by automation look at the current trend of autonomous ware houses. Imagine if the transport industry becomes autonomous a huge percentage of the working class deliver products. They have autonomous shipping ports popping up across the globe. Car manufacturers are replacing more and more staff with robotics. Look at the most labour intensive industries and you will see reduce staffing requirements. The online retail industry is next, no more shop keepers or sales people or even shop front leases

I left america last year let me give you an honest analysis! Homelessness is an epidemic! The inflation based currency collapse has absolutely destroyed the working class. Many many people went from working poor to displaced and disadvantaged. The gun violence is real, the lockdown made people go absolutely insane. Depending on where you are the gun violence is very ridiculous. The sachler family got america addicted on opiods through overprescription. The zombieland is legit real in some cities. Philadelphia is really bad not gonna lie. Tipping is the same as far as I knew it, but in general the economy has collapsed like Weimar Germany after world war one. Cost of living is crazy yes. You are right, all of the above-mentioned, and then some. Life has taken another chapter in this country, very sad. It's happening in all major cities and states, not just the "blue" states or cities. Rather than writing about all the bad, I want to say I visited China in the Spring of 2016, have a friend who has been telling me to visit for years, he has been working there for probably 20 years, and travels home every 2-3 months (for 4-5 wks) for about 20 days, in Shanghai, few days in Beijing, and few days in Xiom. It was a great experience culturally and culturally. In addition, all the modern infrastructure is amazing, from Airports to bullet trains, subways, malls, and residential zones. It is definitely different and advanced, modern. I subscribed to your channel, and hope you also stream from CH, I will search for your videos, we have lost our way, our guiding light, politics is involved in everything, and all politicians (most) are corrupt, from the smallest town all the way to DC. The question, "Why would they lie to me?" should not be a rhetorical question, people should always question what the government tells them, and look for the reasons as to why it would be in the government's benefit to lie to the public. I can only speak for California. San Francisco and Los Angeles saw the unhoused/homeless issue REALLY go up during the 2010s with BIG tent shantytowns/slums just REALLY "in your face" now in SF and LA........ But it wasn't till the last few years where homelessness in California OUTSIDE of SF and LA EXPLODED. In, say, Sacramento and San Diego and Orange County and Santa Clara and Sonoma and Fresno and so forth, one could always see "street bums" but the big tent shantytowns/slums one took for granted in SF and LA are now ALL over the above mentioned cities. For instance, in Sacramento there was a video showing a trail along the American River that I'm familiar with and there was a video taken from a drone? showing homeless tents along the "nature trail" that go on and on and on as far into the horizon that the drone camera could pick up........ And yes: grocery stores and drug stores - HELL ALL CHAIN STORES - have "locked up" their shelves........

In 1949 Albert Einstein said. “When the very rich so controlled the means of communication that it would be almost impossible for ordinary people to make informed decisions and so democracy would then be broken”. Einstein argued that private capital “tends to become concentrated in few hands”, resulting in “an oligarchy of private capital the enormous power of which cannot be effectively checked even by a democratically organized political society”. “Moreover, under existing conditions, private capitalists inevitably control, directly or indirectly, the main sources of information (press, radio, education). “It is thus extremely difficult, and indeed in most cases quite impossible, for the individual citizen to come to objective conclusions and to make intelligent use of his political rights.”

Where I live, homelessness is significant. If anything, the problem with American society, in my view, is that we just keep accepting this status quo as normal. Unfortunately, though, it seems as though those who are most aware of the issue just wish the homeless didn't exist, rather than wanting to find a place for them. A common excuse not to help the homeless is saying that they are incapable of being housed. While I think that's sometimes true, I'm sure that plenty of times it's not. The truth is, it's hard to get into available housing. There are a bunch of properties held by investors, and big one-family homes with many rooms, but I think we need many more small homes, small apartments, and then, for those who are still homeless, maybe dorm-type structures. Then we could find out who is actually incapable of living there without trashing the place, who would actually refuse a place, etc.

Disinformation by MSM is a ridiculously large problem. Homelessness where I am is under-represented in the MSM (especially senior citizen homelessness). We also have a huge problem with homelessness caused by drug addiction. And many large cities have a huge homeless problem because of open borders. Gun violence is certainly up in some cities. For example, a typical weekend in spring through fall in Chicago sees between 30 and 70 shootings, mobs have attacked the people in the Loop, etc. - but those things are generally ignored by the national MSM, which focusses instead on mass shootings that occur in one place at one time. Twenty people can be shot at a Walmart and its big news, but spread those 20 out over ten days and put them in the neighborhood around the Walmart and they won''t get reported at all nationally. Disinformation is also evident in the refusal of the major TV networks to provide any accurate history of Israel's apartheid prior to October 7 and its willingness to spread Israeli disinformation that is later debunked, The networks consistently manipulate the narrative by omitting facts and using adjectives such as "anti-Semitic" and "terrorist." So, yeh, the US media has been brainwashing all of us. It represents the monied interests in this country and its reporting is worse than useless.

Regarding the shootings, it's a combination of both an actual increase in the number of incidents, the fact that everyone has the means to readily document them, and the ease of which those records can be spread. According to Pew, the number of gun murders have approximately doubled in the last decade, and increased 45% from 2019 to 2021. According to Wikipedia, 8 of the 10 deadliest ever mass shootings in the US occurred in the past 15 years or so, and 6 of them in the last decade. edit: Regarding the drug problem, the CDC reports that drug overdoses have increased by sixfold from 1999 to 2021. Regarding tips, it's been a gradual change, but most of the discontent is from 1) the "standard" basically going from 15% to 18-20%, 2) apps and smart POS systems having a tipping screen for everything, including things that were previously not tipped, and 3) DoorDash et al's reliance of tips for drivers to make their gig viable because DoorDash won't charge an appropriate amount reflecting the "true" costs.

1. No, they aren't using really using the E-CNY yet. They have it and will be pushing it out more in the future, but right now everything is mobile payments through WeChat and Alipay. The apps are linked to bank accounts, so basically debt payments. Cash can still be used, but almost no one uses cash now. 2. No, that isn't really a thing. It was an exaggerated story. 3. No, many people didn't get the vaccine and testing stopped over a year ago. 4. The working hours are similar on paper, but many people will work longer hours in offices jobs or really most jobs. So, 50-70 hours per week aren't unheard of and holidays are a little different. 5. You can get by with just English, but learning the language will make your life better. 6. Taxes are progressive, so in the higher brackets you can pay closer to 45-50%, but it isn't on all your income. So, the less you make the less you pay. 7. Yes, but it costs a lot more money if you want to be a foreign owner, which is why many people will open a business with a local partner. There are different rules and it costs more money to start a WFOE (Wholly Foreign-Owned Enterprise).

I'm not sure that an average citizen in America is the best judge on these types of questions. There is a tendency to become acclimated to changes over time until they become "normal". And there is also a bias against admitting that a bad change has become normal, since most of your questions are about bad changes. You should mix in some good change questions to check for biases. You should ask if America is really richer because of sky high rents and home prices.

To the best of my knowledge, certain banks, Starbucks, and McDonald's establishments have been inquiring about our interest in contributing to various charities. This has led me to suspect that these "donations" might serve as a veiled form of tipping.

Everything what you said it is true. Tipping used to be a jar where everyone just ignore. Now, we have technology where it forces you to tip. Sometime the no tip is hidden behind custom tipping. People do live in tent and mostly below bridges. That is what I saw in Seatle & Vancouver. I heard SF is worse.

I use two terms, of three words, throughout the day. #1. Everything's a lie. #2 Follow the money. Both of these will explain things, well, at least in the Untied States.

Everything you asked and seen online is true. Especially in Califronia. It is also true that they are sending the homeless to Hawaii on a one-way ticket.

I don't know about the US but here in Germany, my perception is that homelessness at least tripled in the last 5 years since I moved here. Of course this is just anecdotal from my observations in the city I live in, only in this short timespan.

All you've mentioned definitely have gotten worse to a certain extent over the past few years and decades. How much worse depends on where you are. In any case, have a great trip!

USA is NOT DISNEYLAND although people have been made to believe that USA is The Best Place on Earth to Live. Well I was born in the USA - yet I have lived more than half of My Life Outside of the USA and been treated better - lived better than living in the USA, Better Education, Better Healthcare, Lower Cost of Living, Safer and More Secure as well as Healthier Food and Lifestyle than in the USA. Can walk the streets at night as my wife and I did just last night after having dinner and walked about 8000 steps back to our home without any problems - unable to do that safely in any large city in the USA.

It's more than an uptick..and it's world-wide. Plenty of videos and reports / docos on YT. Why the upsurge, that's the real question.
