There's a public opinion going around that compared to the rest to Canada, Vancouver ain't cold but is damn freeeezing when it comes to social interactions. I went chatting with a registered social worker and Vancouverites down town to get their take on it.

Vancouver has sort of a groupism mentality when it come to making friends, it does seem like it exists everywhere but its quite prominent in Vancouver. People stick to their own friend groups and people they have known. I think when you arrive mainly for school and stuff its easy to connect with people and make friends because all are in the same/similar situation. As time passes if you have not made friends in that initial time period its hard to find friends or if you want friends outside of that small group it hard.

I've lived in Burnaby and Vancouver before Smartphones, and no, it's always been this way lol. @@richardmccallum6994 I would disagree 100%, the social vibe in Vancouver was incredible in the 90's and 00's, you could make friends so easily and there were so many diverse groups to hang out with. Also, people had diverse opinions, in 2022, everything thinks and says the same things because they are programmed to respond to things in a certain way. Agree, she was a bit annoying with her comment. I wonder how many meaningful friendships that girl has formed by just walking up to someone or meeting them randomly. It is not easy to make new friends out of the blue when many of our relationships are formed in school, in extra-curricular activities, in the workplace or through associations with other friends. Also some places are very clique oriented and that can make it difficult to befriend new people.

Notice on Reddit you only got 1 comment? That is because Reddit is the home of the anti-social. Those are the people who would never throw a party and have a diverse group of friends. Everyone has to think alike or they're offended. Ever since social media took over, you need to have the "correct" opinions or people will be offended that you think differently. Vancouver's culture has become extremely conformist since the place because more and more multicultural, the local culture is completely suffocated and replaced with this cold veneer of people in competition with each other. The moderators of /r/vancouver and /r/britishcolumbia also ban anyone who thinks differently. Welcome to 2022, it sucks compared to even 10 years ago.

Googling for residents' sentiments re. the city tells much of where things have gone wrong socially. From what I can tell that's been from the *beginning*. And let's not forget the city's official epithet, "No Fun City." Check out some of *Mike Martens*' commentary on the topic of living in VC.

Some people blame immigration as a reason of anti-social life in Vancouver. It s a BS. Go to California and see people from many many different backgrounds who are more friendly and kind and welcoming. I stayed 2 weeks in LA and became friend with all my sisters’ neighbours in LA . In Vancouver after 6 years, I don’t even know my neighbours. High rises with people who has no soul and reluctant to say even “hello” Extremely racist old people that you can realize the amount of their hate when you look at their eyes. Vancouver is smaller than Toronto, and does seem a bit different. I don't feel threatened by people, but people can demonstrate blatant specific interests when they decide to. Many people are standoff-ish, but it seems to represent many people's personality/character traits. This can be due to the mindset of the particular individual when not having as much interest to get involved or to explore anything outside their comfort zone. I feel many people have difficulties being comfortable with certain personalities and might be less helpful when being so. People in Vancouver can easily be put off while automatically contributing some people's openness as a negative experience. So many people in New York would take advantage of these lively moments to only enhance the experiences while many people in Vancouver would give the confused look to only write someone off as a nuisance. 😢😮. Owell, I had so many amazing experiences in Toronto, and it seems the Brazilians were ultra friendly while finding myself ending up at Brazilian house parties often, and I would meet so many successful/interesting people. This would almost never happen in Vancouver.
