@@icetraigh do you commonly see that mistake? I don’t go into many comment sections, so I haven’t seen it. What’s your experience with the misuse of “than” like?
This is what happens when you live in a self-obsessed time. All people want to see in shows are themselves. Most shows these days are just shitty hagiographies of the writer(s). No universal themes, nothing anyone beside themselves can identify with. No wonder mainstream art is such dog shit nowadays.
She’s the type that feels she’s being suppressed so if she only had the opportunity she’d kill it, but will never learn that she’s not successful because what she makes sucks. I’m sure it racism or misogyny for her.
She’s so good as side characters (where she also plays the exact same self insert 💀) but her shtick does NOT work as the main character. It’s too unlikable to be the main focus of a show, and much funnier in small bursts.
@@Zachary-usually in the hands of poor writers, but some famous examples are incredible. “The Divine Comedy” has a self insert main character, as does two of Leo Tolstoy’s most famous novels “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina” with important characters amongst the large cast who are self-inserts. Also “Novel Written on Yellow Paper” if that can be considered an example as its very direct and open about it. Very likely “Wuthering Heights”. So many others. It can be done well but the author has to view themselves with honesty and thought, and put just as much effort and compassion into the other characters. It’s like self-portrait-great artists can comment on themselves and their natures in a truly interesting way that is a gift to art. Unfortunately, I’ve heard so many inexperienced writers say they can only write themselves as a character and not see this as an issue; I believe this attitude is where some of the problems and blindness of poor self inserts come from.
Velma is literally a Mindy self-insert. She is Mindy Kaling. The whole personality of Velma has been replaced with Mindy's personality. That's why she is so insufferable.
Is that the lady who wrote Im NOT Starfire? I havent watched Velma but from the brief stuff i heard it gives me the same vibes. Self inster that does nothing ruin franchises
I love how Daphne isn't seen in your animation. Just imagining her reactions to Velma's perverted spiel is more entertainment than the show has provided thus far.
@@Jayplayzmaybe I mean it exists and can make sense if it's them before shaggy gets scooby but it does make it harder to capture fans and have humour similar to old scooby doo
Velma was always the smartest character, confident about it but never obnoxious. Emotionally stable. Idk why Mindy wanted to ruin this show, but she did a great job.
@@usecoperator1270You saw the trash writing and unfaithfulness to the source material and decided Velma not being WHITE was a sole contributor for the show being utter trash?
I love how Mindy self inserted herself as “Velma” and became one of the most hated character’s ever. Hope she realizes that means people hate being around her.
The funny thing is Mindy Kaling recently came out and said that the show was made out of love for Scooby doo. Yeah she loved Scooby Doo so much that she got rid of him.
Realistically, I think the issue came about because they couldn't think of any creative way to have the actual character of Scooby Doo work in context of the show.
This guy said it best lol btw hope HBO and all of Warmermedia and Turner Broadcasting take this as a learning lesson to never give her any more time and space to make any shows or go best the creative team ever again because she lacks all things creative let alone comedy or talent
@@CapObvthe show isn’t even woke lmao, that’s not even close to the problem. but nice job bringing your moronic politic problems into it! The show just sucks, and isn’t funny whatsoever. Mindy also self inserts herself into everything she writes, she just can’t write. It’s not woke at all lmao, they are trying to be edgy. Naked children in the very first episode but you’re whining about being woke. Dear god it’s Like you purposely ignored any relevant criticism and went straight to woke.
Whoever wrote the hashtag joke ended up accidentally making themselves sound like the very thing they were attempting to mock. Which I think is a very good way to define basically the whole show.
I haven't watched the show, but every review I've watched, none of the "jokes" they've shown come across as actual jokes. I'm reminded of the Simpsons episode where Homer gets a spot voice acting the new character on Itchy & Scratchy. There's all this hype and buildup, and then the reveal is his character is just a pathetic collection of dated buzzwords and catchphrases trying way too hard to be cool. The joke is how out of touch the character is. Everyone hates it. Every character on Velma feels like this only without the self realization of parody. They actually think it's good writing, not a parody of how bad bad writing can be
Admittedly I haven't seen the show either, but I can't get past the blatant laziness. For years people have been making jokes about Velma's sexuality, Fred being an asshole, Shaggy being a perceived pothead...the writers just perpetuate these annoying tropes while having the gall to claim them as their own.
That's a big part of its awfulness. Its fans claim it's satire but even if we grant that (and I think it'd be generous to do so), it's either bad, obnoxious, far-right meme-warrior stuff or it doesn't do enough to say 'This is satire!' and comes across as the thing it mocks.
@@UncannyValleyVideos I feel more like they just forced the sexuality part just for some “relatability” factor. I mean people that watch this show watch it because it’s like a spinoff of Scooby Doo right? Why take Scooby Doo and just change everything about the characters? Surely they know what nostalgia is
I strongly think that characters who are mean and narcissistic can be very fun to watch, especially when there is no half ass tragic backstory and they don't care that they are horrible people. That being said, you can't make a character like that but have the show claim they are a good person. Embrace the villainy or have the protagonist be decent. This clearly did neither.
This is basically the reason why Rick Sanchez worked as a protagonist despite being almost the same in terms of attitude and d-baggery. Velma is portrayed as a "good guy." Rick is not. Rick is a questionable figure at best. Morty is who the audience is supposed to empathize with and he works as the audience's proxy for liking Rick. If Morty wasn't in the show to do that, Rick's character would be insufferable to watch no matter how cool the show is. We'd basically just be watching him be a dirt bag to his family while bullying Jerry and going on whacky adventures in-between.
That's why I adore Zuko's character from Avatar TLA. While Zuko had a tragic backstory, the narrative itself never forgives him for his negative actions until he himself reflects, takes accountability for them, and grows past them. The closest the narrative comes to using the tragic backstory is in the early story when Iroh is contextualizing Zuko's treatment of the helmsman and his crew. Which honestly could just be handwaved as explaining to the audience, as it's our first experience with that plotline. Yet even then it's during the storm that nearly claimed the life of the helmsman had Zuko not risked himself to save him that make them respect Zuko as their leader. Not his tragic backstory, or his Uncle playing defense for him.
Velma is like the antithesis of puss in boots bc everyone before watching them is like “is it really that bad/good” and then comes out 2 hours later saying “OH ITS THAT BAD/GOOD”
I watched an interview of Salma Hayek talking about puss in boots before it came out and she was just gushing, and I was like, “poor boo they’re making you be so positive on this press tour about what I’m sure if going to be a trash movie.” But I was watching her and she seemed so genuine and enthusiastic, like she didn’t seem like she was forced to say this stuff, I got tentatively excited it might actually be good, and holy crow it actually was!!!!
I really can't believe how these shows are ramrodding in a second season when the first season is barely even in infancy. They truly have no molecule of knowledge in regard to pacing, comedic or commercially. It is already shaping up to be a failure, but they still are willing to sink in a few million to make this the 2D rival to Batwoman.
Mindy casting herself as Velma is actually kinda wild, even assuming narcissism or the ego of past success. "The Quirky Girl" casting themselves as Velma feel like "That Comic Book Guy" casting themselves as Batman. You have REALLY got to think you're the hottest thing around if you believe you could pull it off.
To be fair it’s pretty normal for creators in animation to cast themselves in the lead roles- like Gravity Falls, Family Guy or Rick and Morty… however in this case it is a lil weird (Edit: actually y’all are right, it’s not the same. Very weird self inserting)
@@chimedemon I'd argue the major difference is that those are all their creations, where Velma had all this goodwill and pop culture cache, and it seems Mindy just said "Ah yes, *I* am the perfect person to voice this character widely loved!"
@@chimedemon remember the guy that self-inserted himself into the Powerpuff girls? It's... it's a bit creepy. Like, 'call the authorities if you see this guy near kids' creepy.
Calling it bad is an understatement, it is an abomination that is Scooby-Doo in name only. (Or to be accurate, as related to the franchise as a unwanted Karen stepmother in her late 40’s)
In What's new Scooby Doo, Daphne was pretty resourceful too. She made a car battery out of a water bottle, a hairpin, and a double A battery in the Desert Race episode
@@PerpleX_Plays Oh for sure, and in the OG Scooby Doo everyone still has their quirks. Velma notices things others may overlook, Fred makes traps and helps with the strats, Daphne would accidentally fall into traps the baddies made which gave more clues while Shaggy and Scooby had insane luck.
Mindy grew up with rich parents, never worked a day job & was handed a Hollywood job through her parents contracts & influences. So when she wrote Fred as a spoiled rich kid with no soul. Yeah i can definitely see she's really writing herself. This is what we in the business call "The Projection" & a classic Freudian Slip.
I mean that's most people in Hollywood tbh. If you look into celebrities backgrounds, you'll find these people are all related or go way back generations in some way. They're our version of royals, lord's, and ladies. However, many of them are talented and not hack like this.
Obsessed how every single "review" of the show says "art style, phenomenal. Love you. You deserve the world." And then immediately to "I hate this show. It sucks. You deserve torture."
I wanna hear your voice in some random show one day and your character steals all the attention from the MC the emotion you are able to verbally preform is amazing.
“Is it that bad ?” Let me put it this way. Last weekend me and my friends watched Morbius. We kept laughing at how bad it is the whole time. After that we watched Velma, and we died inside.
Adding onto how Velma is a lot like Rick Sanchez in this show, I think a big reason why characters who are made to act like Rick so often fail is because the show they’re in fails to recognize their actions as wrong. These characters will do things that are very much in line with things Rick would, but the difference is that only Rick’s actions are called out and portrayed as bad, and that makes the other Rick-inspired character look tone deaf.
@@notmything6629 I was just watching it so speak for yourself, and while the accusations and evidence about Justin Roiland being a POS are damning, it doesn’t mean I don’t still love the seasons we will have with him for years to come. And him being fired isn’t the end of the show, because Dan Harmon the co-creator is still on-board and going to continue it with a re-cast.
@@notmything6629 tbh all this is making me interested in watching future episodes and I’m someone who dropped it after season 2. There’s just something so interesting about a channel having enough faith in a show to keep going after firing such a seemingly huge core piece of that show. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that Justin hasn’t even been in the writer’s room for some time (which, again, just sounds like a positive) so it makes sense that adult swim could think they could keep going, but it’s still interesting to me.
@@maninblack3410 Me too, wonder if Sean Kelly from Tiktok will get the role…also if I can enjoy Gary Glitter Rock & Roll pt 2 knowing that GG is a pedophile piece of trash, I think Rick and Morty is not that big of deal to still love the past 6 seasons of, haven’t watched S6 yet but I loved S5
I never thought I’d miss when adult cartoons were “hey it’s like your kid cartoons but we say fuck now! Also sex?!?!? Really graphic violence?!?!?”. Now it’s just “HEY SUPER WACKY RANDOOOOOM now here’s some propaganda”.
i guess you're gonna LOVE Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. and yes “hey it’s like your kid cartoons but we say fuck now! Also sex?!?!? Really graphic violence?!?!?” is gonna be as bad as it gets with those shows.

“Its like they tried really hard to make Velma unlikable.” *Velma is Mindy’s self insert* Well, guess it is very reflective of real life, especially with people discovering how vial she is.
The irony of Mindy, oh sorry I mean Velma shitting on Fred for being a spoiled rich kid is that Mindy literally had everything handed to her in life. That's why she acts the way she does.
Ehhh I wouldn't go that far. We can't assume Mindy's had no hardships whatsoever, maybe the way she acts is a result of them. I don't think attacking the creator in a way beyond how much of an asshole they are is right imo

Velma sucks because they took a beloved franchise and made illogical changes to the characters, removing everything that made the characters likeable or relatable, the story and humor fall flat and are just plain bad. I don't care who wrote it, voiced, produced, or promoted it. It's just a bad show.
Her office scripts writing were probably good because it got checked by real executive that wanted as much of an audience as they could get. Now she’s just opinionated and cast out those who think differently or just simply have questions.
There's no fuckin way meatcannon actually submitted that animations script to hbo, just imagine being the employee who recommended him after being a fan of his work and like fighting for the higher ups to contact him and give him a go just to get that back
Imagine if he did 😂 Guess we'll never really know, but it's hilarious to think of him cackling, laughing to tears as he cooked this up for them as a giant middle finger if they really did ask him
I like how you did point out the positives of the show. Granted, there are not many. But the animation is pretty dope, if they actually had good writing and decent characters I think the style of animation could really fit. The artists should be proud. But the negatives are so numerous it’s hard to point out any of the positives here
Your animated style is amazing, and somehow your editing and comedy shine even in nonanimated videos. Seriously props for being just funny. Editing skills top tier
your two minute Velma skit was funnier than the whole season one of the show 😂 HBO refused to use this video (after requesting it), when in reality, they should have hired MeatC to write the whole thing, it would've been definitely much more successful 💀
I’ve heard people also compare Velma to Daria. But Velma has several key differences that really change everything. For starters, unlike Velma, Daria was a real outsider and going against the flow, not just bitching about everything as a character trait. She had almost no friends at all, and had very little self-comfidence. Also even though she could be cynical, she rarely attacked people to their face and especially not based on modern progressist moralist trends, she only called out genuine stupidity of her peers and society as a whole. And last but not least, she occasionally was able to question herself instead of being an ass constantly. She felt relatable because she hated the growing stupidity of the world and everything that’s wrong with society, she wasn’t just being a smartass out of pure egotism.
The way Daria communicated her views was also charmingly well written. When she expressed an observation or criticism, it was almost always through a sarcastic witticism, the idea was written out in a banter/joke like format that actually had descriptive value. Her commentary would often then be responded to, opening up for further exploration in a back and forth. From what little of Velma I've seen, her character (and the shows writing in general) doesn't do that. She pontificates in a very shallow manner, with no nuance or depth to speak of. Like when someone name drops a buzzword in place of actually communicating the meat of the idea. This is a common thing in modern lowbrow political discourse, where it's easier to fling labels and buzzwords than actually describe and argue. In a word, Velma is pretentious. Daria is not.
Daria wasn't mean to be mean; she was frustrated by a world that could be so much better, and she even helped people once in a while, especially if she felt they were getting a raw deal. I'm not saying that Daria was a flawless character - in fact flaws were a big thing about her - but she had more than her share of good traits too, to balance out the more off-putting ones. It's always a good thing if a show's lead is likeable, but even if they're not, it's sufficient to be relatable. Daria wasn't always easy to like, but you could at least see how she turned out as she did.
Furthermore, Unlike Velma's supporting cast, Daria's Supporting cast despite falling into well worn archetypes actually have a good deal of depth to them like for example take Daria's sister Quinn, now on the surface Quinn may be your standard shallow dumb popular girl but we are shown that she is actually pretty intelligent and really only acts the way she does because she's really insecure for most of the series that being popular is the only thing she's good at and actively sabotages herself in order to fit in with people like Staci. Kevin Thompson may be the idiot jock and star quarterback, but he's ultimately a pretty chill guy. And Jodie Landon's entire character is one of the most nuanced and fascinating deconstructions of the whole Token minority characters.
This show reminded me of the 30 Rock episode where Liz Lemon is nervous about going to a high school re-union because she was awkward and got bullied in high school...only for her to learn when she shows up that everyone was actually afraid of her because of all the mean things she said to them. "Velma," or Mindy Kaling really, come across as someone who thinks that because they had/have anxieties and weren't/aren't the Prom Queen, somehow they are automatically the protagonist and everything they say and do should be celebrated.
12:49 that annihilated me 🤣🤣🤣 Along with the "WAIT HOLD ON" and I love the complete lack of attempt to make her have a higher pitched voice. Just well done
Yes. Yes it is. Mystery Incorporated is a great modern update of Scooby Doo with ongoing story arcs and decent character development. That show deserves all the attention Velma is getting.
The fact that Kelly was a great Love To Hate Character as a side character, but then Mindy tries to bring that same energy to being the Protagonist, is mighty bold.
