China is always a threat to VN since its founding, as I said to my American friends. The American war occupied 1 page in Vietnamese history book, French war 2 pages, the rest of the history book filled with struggle against Chinese. No matter how much human power, can not wage a war without technology, whatever reason China may takes on Vietnam , Vietnam will depends in the West for weapons, US foreign policy could change rapidly every new administration.

I think Vietnamese should protect the country's financial sovereignty and prevent wealth from being robbed by dollars. The intelligence of Vietnamese is much higher than that of Indians, and they are more industrious. When China develops high technology and competes for high-profit industries, Vietnam accepts some industrial transfers from China, which is a very good cooperation. Vietnam and China are countries with similar cultures, I think China, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam all have the same culture in essence, but our scales are different, so no one can replace anyone.

I was born in Vietnam, though I am a citizen of the USA. It depends upon what you mean by that slippery term 'Next China.' Will it be a threat and major economic player on the world stage? No. It's too tiny. And that would be expecting a flyweight to duke it out among heavyweight contenders. But its position has been secured by being a niche player in manufacturing. And it will continue to move in that direction. I'm just glad that Vietnam did not put all its prospects into tourism, like neighboring Thailand. And it's really trying to power forward in the direction of countries like Korea or Singapore.

Nah, Vietnam doesn't need to be "China" in term of economy. It needs to be second to China who will likely become number one soon. Historically, Imperial Vietnam has been around second or third economically during the ancient times to medieval periods because it was extremely rich due to trade with Imperial China. In the list of tributary states, Imperial Vietnam was number one to China, and Chinese emperors were persuaded by Chinese mandarins that China had been suffering huge trade deficits with Imperial Vietnam. It is ironic if you compare the history and current time.

Lol now that you mention it, I couldn't help but laugh at how hilarious it was. Especially the Qing era, China was way too generous towards Vietnam: like how Qianlong - (Quang Trung's secret lover/crush 🤣) just simply gave a shit ton of money or valuable commodities (gold, ginseng, pearl, rare animals,...) to Vietnam on a daily basis, Vietnam's emissary always earned much more in return everytime they came to China for anual tribute event in this period, thanks to Qing corrupt officials like Heshen or Fuk'anggan :))

Vietnamese are smart and hardworking. I believe Vietnam will soon become an upper middle income country. But it is still difficult to become a developed country. Because Vietnam's recent rapid development is due to the transfer of mid-to-low-end industries from China. It is impossible to become a high-income country by relying on middle and low-end industries. If you want to become a high-income country, you must have high-tech industries, and no country will transfer high-tech industries to Vietnam. It is difficult for Vietnam to compete with Europe, America, China, Japan and South Korea in high technology with its own efforts. The current rapid development does not mean the permanent rapid development. This is the middle-income trap encountered by many countries.

To be fair, China is not even considered a developed country yet. Rich, but not developed, just like India. And USA should have been listed out of developed country already, it is just a title btw. Vietnam wont be as rich as China, but due to recent events, and undeniable strategic position, as well as meutral stance between china vs the west, vietnam can rise to the top of 3 of ASEAN, which is currently Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. She is already the biggest economic partner target of Japan, and soon the europe. China is number 1 power in asia, but i really dont understand all stupid politic drama that leads china to be hated by many, if china keep trying to shoot herself in the foot, by threatening neighbors and the world, strengthen opponent alliance like us-japan-korea, soon she will find herself contained and surrounded, just like Russia. No, not even close. 1) They are 2 entirely different sizes, China has the huge domestic market and supply chain to be self reliant, Vietnam can only hope to be a small cog in the global supply chain. This mean they will be at the mercy of multinationals, who will always siphon profits away from the country, and just exploit it for the cheap labor. 2) Vietnam since it's founding has been at war constantly, peace was only achieved in 1991 when China and Vietnam stopped the border wars. This means Soviet help during the cold war were in military supplies. Vietnam never received any Soviet heavy industry. Which means Vietnam's growth is VASTLY different from China's growth in the 1980s, China had a robust heavy industry, the heavy industry is the foundation of an economy, without it, an economy relying on textile industry and electronics assembly cannot grow beyond middle income country status.

Hey Mr .50 RMB, If you want to be that specific, India is the next China. India is projected to be the fastest growing economy for the next several years (not including low population countries). But Vietnam is doing that China is and is where China was 15-20 years ago. It is also competing with India fastest growing for the next several years. You’re “Vietnam is at constant war” is total Chinese propa. Expect nothing less from Mr 0.50 RMB (五毛). I'm so happy and proud for the Vietnamese people. I'm from the Philippines and some of my relatives have migrated and married Vietnamese nationals. I've taught a lot of Vietnamese students to learn English and I can say that they are determined people. You can really feel their competitiveness and I like that from them. I have a lot of good friends in Vietnam and will fly there soon to accompany my best friend which is a Vietnamese. These people have strong sense of patriotism and I couldn't be prouder than seeing my students grow to become successful players in their respective niches. The thing that the Filipinos, my countrymen, can learn from Vietnamese will be to have a strong sense of patriotism, nationalism, and unity. Their GDP has surpassed the Philippines today. Vietnam may be the next Korea or Taiwan in the future if things go smoothly as planned. Although the country is a new player in the field of electronics and manufacturing, once the Vietnamese children become competent and competitive people in the future then it will only take years for them to study the technology of neighboring countries and apply those learnings through a hybridization process. The Philippines should learn better from this rising tiger. It will only take an amount of time for their GDP to surpass its neighboring developed nations.

Vietnam will never replace China completely, Vietnam is too small, too undeveloped, not enough population. The one country that will become the next China is probably more India, if they can sort their sh*t. Also China got a lot of raw materials needed for some manufacturing whereas Vietnam really doesn't. But if Vietnam can grow its economy to become a well-developed country, it will be one more win for the East in its war against western dominance.

An ally of the US; they were at war with them for years... I think that apart from corruption, Vietnam's biggest problem is most of its industry is foreign owned so profit goes abroad. The bottomline is that India is going to have it's way with the manufacturers to produce in India as it's people growing richer, the only way the manufacturers will be able to maintain growth is to sell to the next billion people and for that they will need to move to making in India.
