White Nights or Saint Petersburg watercolors is made in Russia. It is advertised as artist grade paints boasting vibrant colors but many artists also mention their use of some fugitive pigments. Personally, the paints work very well for my style, when it comes to the output/painting. The colors are also intense and generally transparent. But the lightfastness issue due to the use of fugitive pigments, will have to be personally tested before I could give my own judgement. For hobbyists and artists who paint in sketchbooks, you dont have to worry on fading for they are not exposed to much light.
The colors included are:
Zinc White, Cadmium Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Med, Yellow Ochre, Golden, Golden Deep, Hansa Yellow, Titan Red, Ruby, Cadmium Red Light, Quinocradone Rose, English Red, Carmine, Madder Lake Red light, Quinocradone Lilac, Violet, Ultramarine, Blue, Cobalt Blue, Indanthrene Blue, Turquoise Blue, Indigo, Cerulean Blue, Yellow-Green, Emerald Green, Green(Russian), Olive Green, Oxide of Chromium, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Umber, Burnt Umber, Mars Brown, Sepia, Neutral Black, Paynes Grey
I got my set in Deovir:

St Petersburg is in Russia - close to Finland - and that’s where the company Nevskaya Palitra are - St Petersburg was renamed Leningrad during the communist period of Russia but once communism collapsed in the Soviet Union (what Russia was called under communism) the cities returned to their original names - St Pertersburg was one of the GREAT cities of the world at one time and to this day one of the most BEAUTIFUL CITIES on the planet... the White Nights brand of watercolour paints from Nevskaya Palitra are their professional artist grade watercolours...

Wow, thanks for the information Magdalena French. The history of the city sounds interesting and seems colorful. No wonder the paints are also vibrant, they're made in a beautiful city.

Thanks for your review! Personally, I prefer to buy separate tubes or pans of White Nights, with proofed lightfastness and single pigment composition. Among such paints are Aureoline, Golden Yellow, Geranium Red, all sort of Quinacridone, Blue or Bright Blue, Irgazine Yellow, Green Light, Burnt Umber and Sienna, Raw Sienna, Indatrene Blue, Chrome Cobalt Turquoise, Red Ochre, Voronezh Black and Lamp Black. I think that an option of buying selected tubes or pans instead of full sets is available now not only in Russia but through the entire world.
@evalikesred
@evalikesred 2 года назад
I 100% agree with you and just said the exact same thing in my own comment earlier 😆. I "grew up" on a 24 Leningrad set, but never took to it. Too many opaque cadmiums, garish or wishy washy soapy mixes, plus a few fugitive colours. But once you go custom and include recent years' additions of single pigment colours, you're GOLDEN! Every paint you mention I love too and wouldn't go without 😍. Just curious, do you use tubes or pans? I'm more of a pan girl, but as I keep running out of certain colours (particularly the blues: ultramarines, cobalt, cerulean), thought I'd go with tubes for the next refill. But some reviewers on YT state that qualities & colours are not exactly the same in tubes as in pans. Got any experience to share on the subject?
@TheRetiredPanther
@TheRetiredPanther 2 года назад
@@evalikesred I use both tubes and pans now, sometimes even refilling the pans from tubes. Before 2018, I had some causes of color mismatch between pans and tubes, but in the last years, the pan and tube paints look just the same for all features except consistency. Still, I’m not a big expert or pro, and this is my opinion only.
@evalikesred

@@TheRetiredPanther Good to know! And thanks for the reply, it's given me a push. I definitely prefer pans just for the ease of use, but think I'll give it a go with the tubes for my most used colours next. Good luck with your art.

Great reviews! Your videos have been very helpful to me in the past few days in researching my first watercolor paints. Have you had experience with Shinhan Professional, not the PWC premium line, watercolors? If so how do you compare those with White Nights? Both quality-wise and performance-wise. Right now for me, it's either to buy the 12-color set of White Nights and replace the cadmium ones with transparent ones to get better mixing results for my limited palette or buy individual tubes of Shinhan professional line making a split primary palette plus some green and earth tones. Oh, and by the way as you might already know White Nights has, since 2020 I believe, updated their colors and replaced many of the fugitive pigments with lightfast ones so in that regard I think White Nights should perform flawlessly now. Thanks!

I love them, and have had nothing but great results. I am picky, too, so these have passed my expectations. Until I see colors like aureolin, ochre light, venice purple, geranium red in a set (all new for 2019 lightfast colors) I'm not buying a set. It is possible, however, to buy individual colors from Jacksons. They do have most of the newest colors in stock as half pans and 10 mL tubes--all less expensive than you'll find them almost anywhere else as was noted by Awenda above.

I have 1 pan of these that I got recently, it's the quinacradone lilac. I bought it by accident but it's a beautiful color. I'm glad you showed the pans, there smaller than my whole pans here and I wasn't sure if my pans were just larger and I didn't know or realize. I am interested in seeing a future lightfastness test. I've seen a few with this brand and the carmine, vermillion, indigo, Prussian blue all faded. That's the main reason why I haven't bought this set so far but someday I'll probably buy it just to try thier range, use it in sketchbooks, figure out the more fugitive colors so I have confidence using them in one of my professional paintings. I enjoyed seeing your view, reaction and what you liked about these. So far in watercolors Daniel Smith is my favourite brand, I have mgraham's Cobalt set coming Monday and I can't wait to try them. So far aside from Daniel Smith I enjoy Holbein, recently tried Turner's and really liked them, I've tried only a few schminke and liked them. And I bought the tester set of Senelier which I really loved and loved layering with them but they are a company like white nights where I've seen fugitives in some that have good lightfast ratings so I'll be careful with the pigments I buy from them. Thank you for your video! :)

Hi Angie! Thank you for watching and for sharing your experience. As of now, I have atleast 20 watercolor brands and i am inn the process of reviewing each one of them here. After finishing the reviews of all the brands i have, i will be swatching all the colors and put them on a lightfastness test, all at the same time to be fair. I hope you see it soon. hehe. I think ive seen that lightfastness test too here.. and of all the lightfastness reviews, it seems that prussian blue always fades.. that's the reason i never choose it whenever i buy individual colors, along with Opera and some violets. From my 20plus brands, I have to agree with you that daniel smith is the best. my sennelier and mgraham are fighting for the 2nd place. hehe, mgraham is beautiful but they wont be great for travel as they dont dry in pans. unless you put just a tiny drop. Between Holbein and Turner's which one is better in your opinion'? Most brands couldnt avoid having fugitive pigments just to widen up their color range. Im proud of mgraham to make only a 70 plus color selection, but most are rated highest in lightfastness, and most colors are single pigment. Again, Thanks for sharing and please hang around for my next reviews, tips and demos. :)

@@AllanJayQuesada hey Allan :) nice to officially meet you, or internet meet. You're so lucky to have reviewed 20 brands! I'm envious but in good ways for you! My Holbeins, I bought the 30 set, I believe I read that's the one you bought too. When I first got them I was slightly dissapointed by the multiple mixture pigments and they add white (pw6) to alot of their pigments where I would have preferred if they left the white out as we get a tube in the set, I could mix if I wanted the opacity. I'm acrylics artist so I enjoy white but not always. It depends on what I'm painting and if I feel it will benefit. At first I was worried the multiple pigment mixes would muddy but as I painted with them I found the mixtures clean. I think magenta quin red and permanent alizarin crimson would have made better red choices... I also pulled all paints out that had two stars or less for lightfastness which was about 9 colors. My favourite colors from Holbein were aureolin, Cobalt violet light, cerulean blue... I bought in addition quin gold (my favourite of all brands so far, quin red, Cobalt turquoise light, magnese, blue nova and these colors I loved all of them! They take some getting used but their truly fantastic paints. I enjoyed them so much and would recommend to anyone to give them a try. The Turner's I bought more recently, I've painted about 5-6 paintings so far and I've been really enjoying them. There were many mixed reviews on them but I do find them highly pigmented, I got many single pigments in the 18 set, I enjoy they used used good quality and you can tell. They dry really vibrant without as much shift in color. I'm not dissapointed about buying them. The price was very reasonable $85.00 including shipping from Jackson's 18 set and 15 ml tubes. So far I'm really enjoying them and I don't feel like my paints are too precious to use as I wanted to keep a half pan of all my Holbeins for collection. At this point I would probably recommend the holbeins over the Turner, But...that might be just because I've enjoyed them so much I'm I'm just learning and getting to know my Turner's. I'll be able to give a better opinion in a few months of using. They do have a few pigments that are harder to rewet so I spray with water 3-5 min before use and I've had no problems so far. Some people have talked about the yellows or black cracking, if I decide to put them in pans I may use glycerin with these. But I haven't decided just yet, I may just keep putting out fresh paint in small amounts using until it's done...haha sorry for the ramble I've been thinking about that this last week. I hope you have a fantastic week! Xoxo

Hello from Greece. I use white Nights and love them a lot. The lightfastness is an issue though. I have substituted some of the Colors of the 36 set with others that have three stars. There were Colors with one or two stars that I had to put away and use them only for sketches. I will wait your experiment with the lightfastness of white Nights.

Hi Maria. ☺️ I'm curious what's your experience on their lightfastness. Did you test it or did you only based on the ratings they honestly provided? I agree with what you did, to only used the fugitive colors to sketchbooks. I do the same as ive had painful experiences to fading artworks. Yes, pls wait for it patiently, probably mid next year as i need to finish all my reviews first. Currently, i have 30 more sets to reviews, so please subscribe. 😉🎨Thank you. 🙏

Regarding my experience with fugitive white Nights violet and Hanza yellow... Well the swatches I had done for these two Colors faded although I keep the paper inside the pallet. So when I realized this I straight removed these Colors and substituted them with quinacridone violet and lemon yellow, both three stars light fast. Tell me please did you used the two stars or one star rated Colors in your art work that you experienced fading?

I noticed a lot of people have already commented that White Nights = St.Petersburg = Leningrad, and the history of the city and the brand. Yes, it's mostly just a branding thing, and all the names are to do with the city they are made in. I'll just add that currently the names differ depending on the sets. The old classic that comes in a cardboard box 12/24 colours are called "Leningrad". The same colour sets in plastic boxes can be found under the name "St.Petersburg", and "White Nights" come in 12/24/36/48 colour sets in plastic or wood boxes (slightly different selection of colours in respective 12/24 sets), plus metal tins (12/21/35). They are all essentially the same professional quality paints that can also be bought open stock in pans and tubes. "White Nights" is the overall name of the watercolour professional series from this company and that's the name generically known overseas. P.S. They've had a great addition of new single pigment colours over the last few years, and now it's my favourite palette ever. The quality easily matches Schmincke Horadam and Winsor Newton PS, (imho), but you get full pans at a fraction of a price. However, I wouldn't buy a set now, as I'm not overly fond of their basic set colours. But a custom palette is to die for!

it says on the paint package which colors are not light fast, they are not rumors the company openly gives the buyer the information. but in every watercolor company there are going to be colors that are not light fast, we are consumers just need to pay attention the what paints we are buying or do our research on the pigment information.
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 5 лет назад
Yeah i agree, the lightfastness in the information are provided most of the time, but those information "may not be reliable" to some artists, as per their experiments. I have watched here in youtube some lightfastness tests that show the in inconsistencies. For example, a color rated to be lighfast 1 or 3 stars on the manufaturer info turned to fade much faster on the actual experiment compared to thise which are rated II or 2 stars. And vice versa. As for me, i have always been very meticulousl as a consumer, to carefully look for lightfastness ratings provided on paper, and in actual experiments of users as well. And i even do that to the brands i trust, like the daniel smith and sennelier. I used the words 'rumors' because people's experiments can be tweaked, or may have undergone uavoidable and isolated circumstances, we dont know.. Or might have been performed with bias. We are not really sure. But, yes, i get affected by I ther peoples review that is why, i would like to do my own tests im time. Thanks for the strong point.

@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 5 лет назад
And thank you very much also for always supporting my reviews. 😊 In my short experience, i did not see any 'chalkiness' or 'muddiness' using White Nights. But there may be some factors why i didnt experience the chalkiness. I dont know, but maybe because i didnt mix more than 3 colors, or maybe because i used arches paper, or maybe because i apply paints thinly and watery.. But yeah, i have reviewed some paints here that can be considered a little chalky despite the way i paint and the surface i paint on. They're the Lukas and PintaPh. You can check them out too. But these Russian paints are actually not bad at all, especially if you just wanna try and play with it, and if not for commission paintings for display, this is really a steal. 😊

Hi. Theyre comparable interms of color and function but the edge for white nights is that most colors are better in lightfastness. If you are using the paints for practice and dont intend to hang your work on wall, then Sonnet should be good. But still, id personally always suggest that you get an artist grade you can comfortably afford no matter the experience level for best results. 👌

you need you just be mindful on what colors you buy because every artist grade watercolor company has paints that are not super light fast. you probably have to do your own research on pigment information, then you can know information like how the pigments for prussian blue or and aurelion yellow are no going to have great light fast qualities regardless of brand.

Yes the White Knights full pans are only 2.5ml poured volume. So not much more than a half pan. Just spread out. I like the Rosa paints from Ukraine. Also honey based and much more affordable. Same-ish pigments. I hot them because I didn't have any cadmium colors .
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 2 года назад
I have compared the volume of halfpnas and full pans. Really double. 2.5ml is the solid volume. But surely, atleast 3ml has been poured to achieve the solid volume. Like a 5ml tube could only fill up 2 halfpans, multiple times till they get dry. Ofcourse it still varies on pigment and binder and water volume. Ive been hearing great things about Rosa paints. I hope id be able to try them out soon.

I have baught these resently and find them far too colourful (which was suprising for me - that this would be an issue!?). they look so intense and therefor are for me hard to control, when I want to achieve pale looks or light colour combinations. so I thought, they are really more for illustrators (or maybe beginners, that like opaque looks). as experiment, I made a very colourful picture with a lot of paint - bold colours. It rather looked like acrylic painting. therefore I am a bit surprised, that you agree with them. in comparison, don't you find, that landscape you made there, has too many unnatural colours in it? doesn't it look a bit unbalanced (looking at a landscape from far?) - I am a lay person, when it comes to art and esp. watercolour. I could be wrong. it's just, the final verdict was a bit surprising for me
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 3 года назад
Hi. Here is why some artists prefer more saturated paints than less saturated. In less saturated paints, it's easy to achieve faded effects but not possible to get the brightest colors. In very saturated paints, you can achieve both vibrant and faded effects. It's just about the control. Watercolor is more on skill control. On the contrary, more intense paints like white nights, since their vibrance is harder to control, the more that it is less adviced for beginners. If you'll observe further, you'll see that the artist grade paints are far more vibrant than their student grade counterparts. In my experience, majority of the colors of white nights are transparent, and that can be proven by the black lines in each swatch square. Regarding my landscape, which color there is "unnatural"? The mountain there isn't actually that far. It is just a tiny Painting that is why. I love colorful outputs and that is my style and preference. All my sample paintings in more than 50 reviews ive put here have mostly colorful sample paintings. That reflects me and my mood. The intention of this review is more to respond on how the paints look, not actually about my personal style, and decisions in coloring. This is also the reason why in my later reviews, i no longer explain my process in sample painting, to focus the video as a review.. Anyways, art should be free, as it is a reflection of the maker. Just for a tip, if you find these white Nights paints to be too colorful, i would advise you to avoid most Asian brands like Holbein, Shinhan PWC, and Mission Gold as these are as vibrant or even more, as compared to white nights. QOR is also super intense. I think you'll love Schmincke, Maimeri Blu and Isaro all from Europe. Pls watch my other reviews too especially the Isaro. Video quality is improved too as compared to this video.😉🎨

@nursen2106 3 года назад
@@AllanJayQuesada Thanks for the explanation. actually, I try these student grade colours, because I find Schmincke too expensive. But going by Schmicke - artist level - it seemed to me, white nights are harder to control. I actually baught them, because I thought, I would prefer bright colours. But as I get more and more output on pictures, that look better and better, I would like to hang them on the wall. but too bright seems not fitting for my appartement. but they are great for small accents. That way they work great. But e.g. flowers.... very difficult. Now I have the small Winsor Newton Cotman with 12 and the white nights big box with 24 colours and empty spaces. I would like to fill the blanks and the empties up with other brand tubes. still trying to avoid Schminke :-) my nex try would be from a German brand. Kremer. Basically, because I want to order their pale gold. as nobody talks about these, I will try only 3 single colours. We'll see. I cannot recommend to you to review those :-D not sure, if there is an audience for this brand
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 3 года назад
Schmincke is top of the line in every aspect. It is subtle yet the saturation is really enough. The texture is buttery so its perfect for usual portraits and florals. Sennelier is also nice. I have 2 sets of Kremer paints. I personally love them, they're subtle but many colors tend to be semi opaque because many of the colors in my sets are cobalts and cadmiums. Yes, better try 3 colors and avoid the opaque Pigments as you have higher preference for transparent colors. But again you might want to checkout the Schmincke paints from dickblick.com. Many sets and items are on sale now. ☺️🙏🎨

@AllanJayQuesada 3 года назад
@@afafalraeai5549 thank you. Based on my research and readings, there are some basis and criteria that tell if the paints are artist grade. 1. Is the color range. 2. Is the inclusion of more expensive and/or lightfast pigments in the range. Luckily, these 2 criteria are present in White Nights. They have a large range of colors 108 colors. (Most student grades only have 50 colors max). White Nights include some expensive and very lifhtfast pigmebts like the cobalts and the cadmiums. Even though I am still a beginner, I want to buy an artist grade watercolor and I've been eyeing white nights since it has such good reviews. Do you think that it is worth it for me to buy po as beginner artist who wants to improve my quality of watercolor? Btw, this was a great video! 🤍

Hi Charmaine. welcome to my channel! 🎉 Thank you for the kinds words about my reviews (though this White Nights review is a bit cringy being too raw and unplanned)🤣. I would recommend you watch my newer review, specially the White Nights tubes review. Practice really makes perfect, so I'm glad you've decided to focus on the craft now. Did you know i only started focusing on watercolors on 2017? And started this RU-vid channel on 2018.hehe. anyways, beginner or Professional, i always suggest an artist to get the best he or she can afford specially is she/he already enjoys the medium. Using rhe best materials give the best experience and motivates one to make more art and practice. It is also easier to see your improvement and express your art if you use paints that are really vibrant and workable. Watercolors last long, specially artist grade paints, so it's a worthy investment. If you are eyeing for White Nights as your upgrade, then i would definitely agree. White Nights are artist grade paints that perform very decently, but with an affordable price. I think, this is the cheapest pro grade watercolor (if we exclude paints that are made in China🤣). Pans set of white nights are FULL PANS, not halfpans as compared to other brands. The tubes are also economical choices much preferred for studio use. Of course, i do not want to limit you to white nights, cause there is a bunch of great paints, but as I've said, white nights is one of, if not the cheapest artist grade paints. I would like to take this chance narin (kakapalan ko na mukha ko🤣) to share to you the link to my Shopee store where i have a number of great watercolor brands including ofcourse, the White Nights from Russia. 😉) Here's the link: shopee.ph/allanjayquesada?smtt=0.0.9
