I remember spending tens to hundreds of hours playing the versus mode of the NES version of Yoshis Cookie with my parents. Was similar to the SNES version, but no character select, so everyone had the same basic stats. As a minor clarifying detail about the mode, the special attacks mentioned only happened upon clearing a line of Yoshi cookies which do not act as wilds on this mode. Instead, you started with none. Every single line clear caused one of the new cookies to be a Yoshi cookie. However, clearing a combo (2 or more lines at once) caused either 4 or 5 (I think 5) Yoshi cookies to appear when the board next fills. Figuring this out changed the game for us, as having cookies for attacks moved from once every 6 clears to every other clear. Another small detail, the abilities that you could use your cookies with randomly switched every few seconds, but included both positive and negative effects that could target you or your opponent...so poor timing on a yoshi cookie clear could shuffle your own pieces, or give your opponent extra points. So saving the cookies was sometimes the plan, though save too much, and you may have so many yoshi cookies you can't help but trigger a negative effect on yourself. Gave it a push your luck element which worked nicely. I miss this game. There was also a Japanese only version on the...N64, I believe, which allowed for 4 player versus mode, which is super chaotic...but it moved slower, so I never really got into that version

That exclusive Japanese one actually came with recipes for the cookies featured in game. I'm sure they'd give you ample time to write it down, because I can't imagine someone booting up the ol' Super Famicom and doing it directly from the screen. Seems like it should have also came with a Yoshi cookie cutter, so you can truly make all the cookies featured.

I see it as a different form of Dr. Mario, since the object is to make the bombs disappear.
@reillywalker195
@reillywalker195 2 года назад
_Tetris 2_ is basically a cross between _Tetris_ and _Dr. Mario_ in its mechanics. It's a match-3 puzzle game with your goal being to match two or more blocks vertically or horizontally with each bomb in the field. If you can take out a flashing bomb, it'll take out all other bombs and blocks of the same colour.
@TheJadeFist
@TheJadeFist 2 года назад
@@reillywalker195 I get that there are bombs, but they flash? Sometimes in puzzle mode it feels like it doesn't blow up the same colours, but some times it does. I need to sit down with the game now at some point.

Can you imagine spending $60 on this game? In 1993 dollars? I can. Oof. The exclusive puzzle mode got me. In addition to that mode, the character attributes in versus mode are also exclusive to this version. It's a good game that I had a lot of fun with. But probably not $60 worth of fun. 😜

I think future generations were spoiled by the fact that you could basically get a mid-tier puzzle game either on flash sites or something without having to pay the standard Nintendo cart price for the same.

I rented it. Was fine. Not all that interesting to me but was good. But the cookie sprites did look kinda tasty. As for Yoshi branded puzzle games on SNES I definitely preferred the oddly named Tetris Attack (largely helped by it being Yoshi's Island themed whereas this game clearly has the Super Mario World theme)

It's funny how you went at the beginning about all the people who knew about the game but never played it, and I was sitting here all smug like "no way man I played the hell out of Yoshi's Cookie!" only to realize I had the NES version which, while totally fine, was basically neutered compared to this SNES release. Not only did it have no puzzle mode, but I don't remember any kind of complex versus mode like that with stats or anything, and the NES one sure didn't have those nice, super cozy Mario World-esque variety of backgrounds. And probably not nearly as good music, though it was totally fine from what I remember. Now I'm actually getting a craving to play the SNES one for once, having always assumed it was the exact same game with no improvements...

Man, the puzzle game craze was real back then. And really, it still is today, partly because it's an easy pick up and play formula for mobile platforms. The difference is that you have Candy Crush pretending that they DID revolutionize gaming by turning the Bejeweled pieces into candy.

Had the NES version. That did not have the puzzle mode, and there were no "characters" in the Vs mode. An important thing to note about the Vs mode: Here he says that you activate your attack every time you clear a line. What actually happens is, you activate your attack every time you clear a line _of five yoshi cookies,_ and you get one yoshi cookie every time you clear a line of regular cookies.

Why wasn't Yoshi's Cookie (NES and SNES) released on Wii U? I thought maybe it was the whole "slave" power-up thing that could be an issue. Although, Wario's Woods SNES is also missing? If they could get Pilot-Wings 64, Goldeneye and Banjo on Switch they NEED to do that! I think it is a possibility, Kirby's Avalanche was on Wii but was an unexpected addition.

Yoshi's Cookie also appears on Gamecube - it's part of a 3 game JP only compilation called Nintendo Puzzle Collection. As well as Yoshi's Cookie you get Dr. Mario(the N64 version) and PanelDePon (aka Tetris Attack). Cookie's graphics are spruced up a bit and there's a Story mode. Each game has a 4 player versus mode. JP menus but it isn't too hard to figure out. Let's you transfer NES versions of Cookie and Dr Mario to a GBA as well if you have the link cable!
