Young Royals is easily one of the best teenage shows ever made, it feels so realistic, especially from a European teen‘s standpoint, cuz all of them look and dress like ppl you would meet outside Plus Wille‘s anxiety and the characters little quirks are just so well done
edvin portrayed wille's anxiety perfectly because he himself struggles with anxiety. and i agree 100% this feels so realistic, especially as i'm norwegian and have been to sweden many times. these teens literally feel like people i go to school with. the fact they're "elite" makes it just dramatized enough to be entertaining and making the stakes big for wille and simon's relationship, but you can still very much relate to the characters cause their personalities grounds the whole thing. it's so well done.
Erik didn’t specify the gender when talking to Wilhelm about his crush. I think he knew Wilhelm liked boys and would have been so supportive of Wilhelm and Simon🥺
Ivar, the actor of Erik, said that he think, Erik would be supportiv, but he would be at odds internally because he knew the problems the family and legacy would have with if one got out of line. And still he wants to see his brother happy.
My favorite thing about this show is that every. single. character. is at least a little morally grey. even Simon and Wille. Even August isn't all bad. I think that's what makes all of them feel like such real, three-dimensional people.
exactly! I love that about YR. I also love how they don't completely villanize the adults either, which is what a lot of these types of shows tend to do .
Young Royals is The most realistic show. They show real skin, real bodies, real problems. I loved that they didn’t make simon’s and wilhelm’s personalities about being gay, The same with sara - writers didn’t make everything about her having adhd. I would def recommend it, made me laugh, made me cry, best show hands down
Young Royals is actually really accurate when it comes to representation because it showed the awkwardness and the denial it took before they started feeling for eachother.
Just to clarify a few things (I am Swedish): * Hillerska is a fictional school, but it is at least to some extent based on the two major boarding schools of Sweden - Lundsberg and Sigtuna. Actual Swedish prince Carl-Philip attended Lundsberg, as have several others from the Royal family since the founding of the school. * The initiation that is shown may seem extreme, but it could actually happen. It is quite common for the people in their first year of high school to be initiated by the older students, and at some schools it gets quite bad - especially at one of the two major boarding schools. (Reports about serious injuries made them tone it down somewhat, but it is still quite extreme. In 2013 at least two students were burned quite badly when older students put a hot iron (that you normally use to iron clothes) on their backs. The nine students, and one faculty member, that were involved were fired/expelled if I remember correctly). I know a person who had to do the "drink spit from a cup" (though it was mixed with alcohol for her) and I also know some people who were tied to statues and then covered in ice cold water and then left there... * 1 USD is about 8.50 Swedish kronor. That means that Simon owing the school 5500 SEK is about 640 USD. The school fee of Lundsberg (meaning one of the schools Hillerska is based on) is about 300 000 SEK and at Sigtuna it is over 350 000 SEK, meaning that Hillerska probably cost about the same, meaning around 35 000-40 000 USD per school year. Love your reaction btw :D
@@theroseofsharonhasbloomed1779 it's never stated whether he only likes guys or he's into more than that, and it's kind of refreshing to have a character that doesn't really have a specific label because nowadays it's easy to fall into the trap of fixating on micro-labeling everything about ourselves (and this doesn't just have to do with sexuality, it can be about everything)
@@theroseofsharonhasbloomed1779 as much as one can choose to label themselves, characters like wilhelm show that it's also totally okay to not have a label or to not really be sure about one
They did a really good job casting this series. Edvin (Wilhelm) is an actor with experience even though he is 18 years old. He has experience with anxiety and panic attacks himself and knew how to add this layer to Wilhelm's character in an accurate way. He also gives Wilhelm small habits like biting his nails that makes him even more real. I love that they chose to not cover his acne with make up, since it also adds to the feeling of Wilhelm being a real person. Omar (Simon) does his debut as an actor with Young Royals, but he is is an excellent actor and he looks like he could be in high school even though he turned 22 when they shot the first season. Omar is a singer and dancer, which makes sense since Simon is singing quite a bit in the series. His first language is spanish, which I assume opened the possibility to make Simon bilingual, which I think adds to the series in form of diversity. Frida (Sara) has at least aspergers in real life (not sure if she has ADHD), which makes Sara feel more real and less sterotypical in a way that characters can become when the director and actor have too little knowledge and experience on the topic. I have people close to me that lives with autsim, ADHD and ADD and I think she made a really good job representing it in a respectful and accurate way. Nikita (Felice) was a good choice to portray the rich popular girl. I think it is uncommon to cast a person of color as the popular girl and "leader" of a friend group, but rather as a side kick or a side character. I think she did a great job of giving Felice more depth as a character, beyond being the rich and popular girl. Malte (August) does his role very well too. He uses his facial expressions and body language to make August a believable character as a bully. He casted for Simon as well, but did not get the part obviously. He said in an interview that they ended up casting him as August partly because he looks older (I think he is younger than Omar in real life though) and because of the difference in height between him and Edvin. He joked and said it would have been inconvenient if Edvin would have to stand on a box when Simon and Wilhelm kissed each other. When you pointed out that he was tall he was standing next to Omar who is about 170 cm tall, so I would guess he is about 185 cm tall.
Was anyone else as surprised as me? I was thinking maybe it would have “ token” gay side characters, was not expecting Simone and Will to be the main couple. Refreshingly attractive and realistic characters. There needs to be more shows like this.
the creators also never labeled Wilhelm’s sexuality, and they did that on purpose, and as a bisexual that as struggled with labels before i really appreciate that
actually the royal family in other places of Europe aren't as "big deal" as THE royal family , he can easily go out and live a "normal life" as long as we saw that doesn't put his family name on dirt . Yes i love that they look like teenagers , edvin that plays wilhem was 17 and omar (simon) was 21 at the time
@@belpop it also doesn't help that he's tiny (/that his co stars are pretty tall) but it's still amusing that the others are like 1~3 years older than their characters and then he's a whole six years older than simon still looking like the youngest kid in the pack lmao
@Marcus Olofzon tbh regular people in the U.S. don't care much or think about the British royal family. No one I know cares much, and if anything, people accept random info on it just because it feels like nosy gossip, like watching reality tv. I guess the only reason why more news about the British royal family reaches the u.s. is because they're like our 'parent' country and speak English. But I wouldn't say it's a big deal, it's just something that's known of
I think we can all agree that first kiss scene was the most precious thing ever. Also, this was so fun to watch, I'd love to see more solo videos from you!!
I think Simons friends are upset with him is because he resorted to violence to get his money. But I get Simon. His friends are not there with him to know the constant humiliation that he’s receiving from August. Also don’t you love Edvin Ryding? What a great actor. Perfect casting for Wilhelm.
Wilhelm would be allowed to go about places as a Sweedish Prince so long as he doesn't act up like at the club. Most of the European monarchies are a lot more toned down than the British monarchy and lead relatively normal lives while still performing their state duties.
We actually have such initiations in Sweden when we start senior high school, and I know some people that got cigarettes and other stuff on a pizza and were forced to eat it. So yeah, pretty accurate. But it’s not always that horrible as in the series :)
Young royals is such amazing show that the more you watch it the more you learn new details an fell more in love with the main characters too. The fact that Lisa already written the second Season even before the the first one was out speaks volumes about the upcoming season and its popularity too.
Even though Wilhelm is new to the school, my guess is he knows a lot about it since both his brother and cousin has been going to the same school, so him knowing about people taking extra lessons in maths is not really that unrealistic.
I dont know why but i love the random intro songs when young royals comes on the screen 😂 I also love the look Wilhelm gives the camera right before the intro song in the first episode
ive seen so many teen bl themed series and idk if those were so bad but this one it was amazing in my opinion, i loved it cuz its more realistic (the humans interactions etc, but idk if in that country royalty and so works like that), cute, its so good i want so bad a season 2. P.S.: theyre so cute i cant
Another foreshadowing moment was in the beginning of ep1 when they're about to sit down to make the public announcement, and somebody asks Wilhelm and his brother to switch places. Uggggggh
also just a heads up but i think you might be using the english closed captions (english CC used for the eng dub of the show) instead of the regular "english" subtitles (when linda was talking to simon and sara in the car it said she was speaking in english, when she was using swedish). regular english subs are more accurate to the swedish
I waited for a calm day to watch this reaction. I'm so glad you like the show so far. It only gets better, I promise. After you finish it, please go watch the director, the writer and the intimacy coordinator talking about their work. They're amazing
Even though their where very few episoide in the season it was developed diffrent then other teen shows this one has more of a sense of realism and how toxic people can really be and how far people will go to get what they need(yes I’m talking abt august 🙄) And the diversity in the characters personality’s is so unique and amazing. My point is that the show is a 11/10 and I hope they make a second season.
Sorry I saw your reactions to the last episodes first, but same reaction from my part you think out of the box. You were the only one who saw: -Rosh being angry for Simon wanting to go to college -August OCD with sport -Wilhem safety at the match For the music, they said they wanted a contrast with the beautiful place, with something a little bit angry as songs. For the kiss "he is not", meant he is not allowed "to love someone", it is not what he was told he has the right to. He has been told he has to marry a royalty, to procreate royal children and that is it for the free will.....duties too heavy for him. So no working class partner possible, and no male partner possible, in the eye of the public at least. As for Simon, he knows he likes him a lot. If his brother dies he becomes the new king
I love that you actually predicted something will happen to Erik during their last phone call! Also I really enjoy your reactions, you can easily do more videos for the next season (like one per episode) and get more into the details. If you want to, I'd watch it!
Young Royals is such a good series, it explains how difficult love can actually be, it shows how Simon and Wilhelms love story and even though they have their ups and downs, they will always love each other, the actors show so much love in their acting and its just ❤❤
oh i’m so excited to watch this!! i don’t know how it is that whenever i have a moment to myself and open youtube you’ve just uploaded a video but i’m not complaining💕
your commentary is so funny. i am so glad that i found your channel. young royal is easily one of my favorite teen drama or romance, and the fact that it’s LGBTQ really hits me 😏💅 also i love this show because of how communicative Willie and Simon are. most typical teen romance will result in one person storming off while the other is being left there hurting. And the author showed Willie’s anxiety really well with figuring out what he wants, and how he has to adjust to the royal family as becoming the future king and taking Erik’s place. It’s a pretty big responsibility My favorite scene is coming soon ;) hint hint, it’s Simon and Willie on a football field
Am i the only one who feels like, wille and simon are really similar to achilles and patroclus? Appearance wise, and even character wise. Bothe wille and achilles have unsupportive mothers who care more about their sons’ reputations than their well-being, they both have a royal persona that they need to uphold in public and in the end chose their pride and reputation over their lovers. Even simon and Patroclus, apart from both being brunettes they both fell in love with the blonds first and aren’t in the public eye as much, so are more accepting and gentle as compared to their romantic partners. Is it because i read the book recently or? Also i do get that they’re not identical but still a lot of similarities…..
I love the show so much and was so excited to see your reaction. It’s so fun to watch again along with you. I can’t wait to see you watch the rest of the show!!!
I saw the intimacy coordinator hint in their Instagram q&a that they kissed at the party, after the cut in the first episode. They didn’t say it for sure, so it’s not canon, but they implied that this is what they think happened. (They said that their “first” kiss was their “first kiss on screen” and did a poll when asked about it again. So now I’m convinced that’s what happened in the story, and I want a flashback in the next season so we can actually watch their first actual kiss and what happened! How did they say bye? How did they kiss? Why didn’t they act like it happened when they kissed the “second” time at movie night? Questions I need answers to!
I've been trying to get people to watch this for so long and no one would so now im treating this video like you're my friend who i finally got to sit and watch with me 😭
Watching this and hello Swedish media with more diversity than Ho- I can't say Anyway, I imagine my crush (Swedish) watching this and feeling strongly about it Also, the playlist/soundtrack ?? YES PRODUCTION TEAM.I can't wait for you to watch more💛they casted so wrll
I really liked how you said "I get why you are obsessed with this show - cause I'm obsessed". I literally binged the whole two seasons in one go. Got Netflix to kinda improve my learning Swedish language and got the proposal of this show... wouldn't normally have watched it for I find the title not really speaking to me but did since it was of Swedish origin and now I really love everything about it and can't wait for the third season... I find it so so refreshing to have a show where you can actually really really relate to the characters and not find cliche / stereotypes being portrayed. To ship wilmon that hard being a straight woman well past her teen days is saying something ... 😅I really like that there are now shows like that where the being gay is not the main issue really and has as in itself kind of a normality (or maybe as a better word commonness (is this a word though?)) that doesn't look forced... like I said live everything of this show! Oh and btw. did anybody mention already that they (I think it must nearly be the whole cast) did their own dubbing for the English version? This makes it so much fun to switch between languages, which I did. Not liking the German version as much so I basically watched it several times in Swenglish (either Swedish with English subtitles or the other way around) ... They're shooting third season right now. Looking forward to it. Last thing: really liked your way of reaction video. Think I'm gonna stay,
I think they did an amazing job at making the show relatable, considering the main character is from a royal family. Giving Simon and Sarah bigger roles was a great choice because it makes the show so much more relatable to regular people.
Wilhelm's dad is actually prince spouse, because Wilhelm's mom is crowned queen. Erik was first born and crown prince, but he died, so now Wille is crown prince and future king.
one of the best things in yr is that they had an intimacy coordinator, everything was discussed w/ the actors, you'll see in the next episodes how real theyr intimacy is, you could literally feel it through the screen
loved the reaction! keep it up srlsy✨ heads up though, if you haven’t watched the other episodes yet, i suggest putting the *“english”* subtitles and *not* “english [CC]”, they’re more accurate :)
I like how it was made and all and that the characters actually seem like teens and not 20+ yr olds playing teens, but I think the plot could be better
It means hes now the Crown Prince. His "free" life is as good as over... everything he does now has to look good , cause one day hell be King. Not just the Kings little brother. The Crown needs Offspring to stay in line so ... well SHIT ^^
I love your vibe, this is the first time i watch your video and i love it, and u! It’s so funny to see someone reacting to a series I’m obsessed whit! ❤
