Music is one of the best tools to help us memorize Scripture, which makes the worship songs we sing in church more important than ever. Are they Biblically accurate? Listen as worship arts pastor Jon Lilley explores the role of a worship leader and the impact that Scripture can (and should) have on the music we sing.

I’m curious…do you have a favorite worship song based on Scripture (or quoting Scripture)? Leave a comment to share what it is!

This was such a GREAT interview Josh and Jon!!! Definitely one of my favorites Josh! So authentic and connects with us out here. I also have heard it's a great practice for the musicians and "worship leaders" at churches to get their song sets APPROVED by their pastoral/preaching leaders over them to make sure that the song sets are biblically faithful and accurate and in connection with the Sunday sermons. I really appreciate how Jon mentioned he's on both teams at his church. What a tremendous and rich blessing that must be!!! 🙌🏽🔥

Bob Kauflin is such a great leader that's blessed a lot of us I'm sure. He gave this counsel years ago and it really struck me in regards to "what are we singing? What are we saying?" This was Bob's counsel and his example:: ""READ the lyrics FIRST. I read the song through FIRST, before I hear it and listen to it."" I think that's such a great principle and encouragement.

God is so good! This is so timely. I am preparing for an authentic praise and worship seminar for worship leaders, and you have mentioned so many good points. I also got ideas on what I can include in the three-hour seminar. Thank you!

Having lived my whole life in music making-first secular, then worship-I love all the variety of genres out there. God created melody and rhythm! I’ve also served as a worship leader and pastor for several churches over the years. As leaders, I think there is a high level of accountability to God for the words we put in people’s mouths in the name of corporate worship. Some of the music that is coming out these days in the Worship genre tickles my ears-great performance and production-but too often strays from Biblical truth. There is room for artistic licence in style and form, but I think the words we sing to God are most important to Him-along with our sincerity. Chris Tomlin once said he tries to write songs with as much actual Scripture in them as possible. I really respect that, and God has used Mr. Tomlin’s songs mightily to unite His church. As I’m now involved more with teaching ministry, I cannot share a current worship song out there, but I have many older ones I sing to this day. Blessings @reverenddarrenmcclelland

John and Charles Wesley knew greatly that connection between the preached Word and the corporate songs sung in the church gatherings. One of them preached 1,000's of sermons while the other wrote 1,000's of hymns connected with (or largely from) the messages preached. And which one do we remember now 100's years later, the sung songs! My numbers are not accurate, but they are staggering when you look up the amount of songs and sermons they both produced. But my point is that it's the hymns and songs that largely live on influencing/leading the church STILL today! Heartily agree with you guys that content greatly matters! 🔥🙌🏽 🔥🙌🏽

I’m probably very different from your typical viewer in that I really hate the modern “worship team” and the way the typical modern large church does the worship service. It makes me feel like it’s mostly a performance of professional musicians, songs that are hard for the average person to sing and learn and is a barrier between me and God, like the whole thing is distracting to my connection with God. I am an older Christian, I got saved in the early 70s in the Jesus Movement and I think we had it better back then. The songs were simpler, we sang the choruses repeatedly and it was a vehicle that did bring us closer into the presence of God, organically. We weren’t distracted as much by the song itself and trying to learn and get it right and being hip. I’m so glad I’ve found a small church that emphasizes connection with God and lets that happen individually throughout the service. I’m sure not many people can relate to what I’m saying because these mega churches these days are the norm, but I think it’s very important.

Hey Cynthia, I know that we each have our own preferences for music, but I think it’s better to recognize your preferences than to “hate” on the way other Christians worship. If you listened to what Jon was saying, he wasn’t even talking about a style of worship, rather the fact that worship can take many forms beyond just music. Remember that when you were younger, the older people in the church “hated” the Jesus Movement music. They thought it was from the devil. Please don’t make that same mistake.

@@BibleMemoryGoal Thank you for responding thoughtfully to my comment. I can see how using the word “hate” could be pretty triggering, especially to someone personally involved in the thing that’s hated. I can see your point and, at the same time, have been personally involved in different types of churches and different types of worship services. I heard what Jon said and I still feel the same way. I’m sorry to have offended you, though. I think you’re a great guy and I have enjoyed a lot of your other videos.
