I love encryption, I learned about it when I worked in the Pentagon for 4 years in the Navy. My answer to the question of "if you are not doing anything illegal why encrypt?" is I may not be doing anything illegal but my info I do have is no one's business! I use PGP on Thunderbird. I have 3 Proton accounts also.

I’m not necessarily looking for encryption, but an alternative to big tech... because of the 2020 elections, I no longer trust big tech and will do anything and everything within my power to divorce myself from all big tech organisations... I’ve already closed Twitter, Gmail next, then Facebook etc... the next few months I will be focusing on that...

"When you have big tech collecting data for the purposes of serving you ads you basically have put together the infrastructure that would enable a society like China to arise here in the West. And there's a certain danger to have that infrastructure out there. Because if it's not abused today there's no saying it won't be abused in the future." I work in software and I can say I've never thought of it in those terms before. It's kind of similar to the power granted by the Patriot Act. They're not abusive in themselves but they act as an incentive for abuse.

Problems are opportunities for more than the altruistic. They are often fabricated specifically to pave the way for pre-engineered solutions that create the dependencies that enable oligarchies to arise to power and with it abuse. This created dependency is modern day slavery. This modus operandi has been used to establish every repressive oligarchy in history. Those who reduce dependency return power to the people and threaten the power of the oligarchy. They promote hatred and division between their dependents and those who refuse to be part of their oligarchy. This is the modus operandi used to establish every repressive oligarchy in the world. Thus the oligarchy grows in wealth and power with the most corrupt and ruthless being elevated to the top. China, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, EU, and now we see it in the US we already have a two-tier justice system, you can obtain people's private telephone records and conversations without a warrant by simply asking and being a senior member of the oligarchy, persecution of those who don't comply using the legal system, and control of the press. There are two Chinas, mainland and Taiwan. Which worked out the best? Did Russia, Cuba, and Venezuela who controlled everything make things better or worse for the poor? The poor in the US are fabulously wealthy by their standards.

Should the question really be, do you want your emails data aggregated and mined for advertising or not? You either pay the email service provider or you pay via a marketer. Unless you’re using PM for internal communication only, you’re only (potentially) addressing half the equation.

Proton mail is pretty great, just a word of warning; it cannot protect you when you send messages to non-proton mail users. Those emails will at least be public for the email services you're sending to.
@Robert-pz4wg
@Robert-pz4wg 5 лет назад
jedikv That is partially true but the email will not be stored unencrypted on Protonmail’s servers. However there will be an unencrypted copy on the other end. You can also choose to send encrypted emails to non PM users that can be decrypted with your public key.

how does it compare with tutanota?
@lauri2010
@lauri2010 5 лет назад
Tutanota has 1GB storage on free account and extra storage will cost 2.40€ per month and 28.80€ yearly (current offer 24€) but you'll get 10GB, Tutanota also have domains where as on Protonmail you'll get 500MB storage on free account and extra storage will cost 1€ per month or 9€ per year, one addresses but no custom domain you can get extra addresses but those will cost you 2€ per month or 18€ per year so overall depending how you're using and what service you need Protonmail is or may not be more affordable than Tutanota.

Quick note, you can get kinda the same level of security, if you use openPGP with something like gmail/yahoo mail. Still end-to-end ecrypted, and gmail wont know the contents. Proton seems like a good way to make end-to-end encryption front and center, and not an aftertought

Encryption should be done _locally_ using open source software that you trust. Learn to treat public keys like phone numbers. If you want to communicate securely with someone, share public keys.

You miss the point. Encrypted email has nothing to do with politics and government. Further, encryption is not developed to enable users to send illegal content via the internet. The reason for encrypted email is the assurance of knowing that the only person reading the senders message is the intended recipient. Having someone prying into your email account intending to use the content for their own personal gain is a huge problem in business today.

Sorry, but protonmail is a joke. Runbox is superior. Even gmx mail is better than protonmail. At least with gmx mail, you can use thunderbird or outlook to retrieve your mail. Protonmail won't give you anything for free. And their paid service doesn't give you much either.

They can ask suspects but no guilty person would give up their password
@crollinsphoto

I'm not guilty of anything but I would STILL not give up a password because it is no one's business. We should not be compelled and forced to give up our private emails/conversations to anyone and I won't. I discuss financial family issues, health issues, etc and it is no one's business but whom I choose to tell via encryption.

protonVPN, protonmaiL, protondrive, they're tracking you, reading your e-maiL, reading the digitaL data, sharing your data to 3rd party and governments.

great but $48 per year is expensive, $9 or well $19 yearly it would be right!

Yep, sad they would charge so much for a "bridge" to use it with other software like Thunderbird and Outlook.

Word of caution, protonmail is good but if security is actually critical use PGP. What he said about "If protonmail is hacked there's no way to get your emails" that's wrong, it's not trivial but it is doable.

Proton uses openPGP, it is basically an easy way for people who do not fully understand the concepts of public/private encryption-keys etc. It is definitely a good idea for people who are new to end-to-end asymmetric email encryption

Protonmail is a joke. I have runbox, which is based in Norway, and has some of the strongest privacy laws of any country. Switzerland will hand over your email to the U.S. in a heartbeat.

From my experience, no one should use Protonmail. The basic (free) service is poor and if you upgrade, you will never be able to go back to the basic service. I sent many emails requesting asking for support but got no response! I had to pay to access my email again
