Thank you for this video. I have been researching like crazy and this is one of the best (and only) I have found with such good explanation. I saw my Dr and she said she didnt feel a hernia exactly, but there could be a small defect in my belly button causing the fluid to seep out. She also said they only operate at a certain size and mine is no where near that. She sent me off with no other help! I do weight lift and to be honest, stopped really working my core for the past year, and may have caused an imbalance posturally. I have decreased my exercise and now am afraid to do anything and dont want to make this worse. I did notice on the day it happened that the top part of my belly button fell down and the stich that held it up, seemed to have come undone. Which reflects to what you are saying about it tearing away from the connective tissue. This is what I felt happened intuitively. Now though, fluid does come out into my belly button and I can push it back in. I do feel a separation in the middle of my button when I do the D.R. check. I have looked at your core prep program and it is a little out of my budget at the moment, but can be something I save up towards. In the meantime, while I am saving up for the program..what core rehab can I get started on? There are so many on youtube, but it's hard to trust them fully. If you have a rehab youtube video series that you trust, can you point me in that direction? I appreciate this video so much and honestly I am scared. before it was the top of my button fell down, but now the fluid and opening make me worried that it will just keep getting bigger. Anyway..thank you for your time.

Hi Lisa, Thank you so much for your feedback. I am so glad this video helped you get a better understanding of what is going on. I agree, there is too much conflicting information out there. I would encourage you to understand that over half of the solution to this issue you are having is limiting and eliminating exercises, postures and movement patterns that are contributing to muscle imbalance and forward forceful pressure on your connective tissue around your navel. I would direct you to our RU-vid channel and blog and our free resources page to get a better overall understanding of the big picture. This is not about exercises but about life. We have our best sale of the year on Jan 22nd (my birthday) where our online programs will be 46% off this year. I would highly recommend saving up and taking advantage of that sale to do our Core Foundations Online Program. Thanks for reaching out, I know this will help you. -Kelly Dean, Owner of The Tummy Team

Thank you! I am so grateful for your reply and giving me hope that working with improving my core will help this issue. I love that you are doing a sale for your birthday. I really appreciate you doing that and giving me a heads up and I will absolutely get the program at that time. In the meantime....I will continue to look at your videos. You are very kind.

Can anyone link me to core exercises which have actually worked please because I see on one hand that you should do sit-ups, planks etc bit on the other hand I’m told to avoid anything that causes the coning?

I want to also point out aside from my original comment I understand umbilical hernias don't always need repair but it does effect us mentally. I've been told I have both Diastasis recti and a hernia because of surgical scars splitting and having a big baby. I was also told it's elective so that makes the surgery not covered by my insurance. Now I am struggling with my mental health because of how my body looks and I can't afford the cost of surgical repair.
@Ashley-xs7pm
@Ashley-xs7pm Год назад
I am having the same issue as you. My stomach pokes out and I am really embarrassed by it. My doctor told me it is a umbilical hernia and the surgeon told me when I get the surgery it only affects my belly button and I am like so what about my belly as a whole. It is so hard.

I wish I would have found this before. I had surgery to repair the diastasis and umbilicus. And surgery did not fix it. CT scan shows no hernia but diastasis at the umbilicus level. How can I find a rehab place in my area to treat this and to restore my core strength 😊 any help would be so greatly appreciated

Hi Heather, well the good news is it's not too late! We do have a handful of Tummy Team Trained Practitioners who treat this with our approach. Where are you located? Our online programs are also quite effective and come with access to our member forum for additional coaching.

Thank you for such clarifying information on this topic!! I’m extremely frustrated with my diastasis. I’ve been working out for about 4 months now and I think it made my gap worse, although I avoid sit ups, crunches, etc. Is there any ab splint you would recommend wearing that is suitable for exercising?
@ThetummyteamWA
@ThetummyteamWA 6 лет назад
Aryane Mendes Andrade Oar I can understand the frustration. Oftentimes the things that are preventing healing are the little things we do all day that add up - slouching posture, pushing during bowel movements, bracing when we lift, or rounding our backs when bend over..... it all adds up to chronic internal pressure against the abdominal wall. We would love to work with you to correct your posture and alignment, do some retraining in body mechanics, strengthen your core and improve your overall function.

Hi, I noticed the other morning half of my belly button was protruding or sticking out, I am 42 years old, it was never like that, I'm positive. I noticed it when I was putting some retinal cream on my chest or I probably would have never noticed it because there is absolutely no pain associated with it at all. The last 2 years I have stopped exercise and got somewhat of a small pot belly. So you think it's just a stretching and the belly button just popped out, or do you think it's a tear and possibly my small intestine is filling that spot? I am seeing a doctor soon but this video really gave me some hope it's just my belly button that herniated.
@ThetummyteamWA
@ThetummyteamWA 7 лет назад
Hi John, Sorry for the delay in response. To answer your questions...It is likely a stretching of the connective tissue that runs down the middle of your abdominal area, and not necessarily a tear. If that area is weakened and your core muscles are no longer supporting the connective tissue it can allow your organs to bulge out at times. Anything that pushes from one area to another area is referred to as a "hernia" so a doctor will likely call it that. It is difficult to assess whether it is a stretch or tear even with very expensive scans. Surgery is nearly always said as the only solution but if there is no pain, it is most likely not a tear needing surgery. As you said, you have a history of fitness and a recent history of inactivity... this is a common recipe in men to have a diastasis. You would do really well with our Core Foundations program. Core strength is not what ab workouts make it out to be, it is actually functionally activating your transverse muscle to make you longer, taller and pulled together in all of your daily activities from sitting at work to, carrying kids, to doing yard work. That is the strength you need and it will pull the 2 sides of the abdominal wall together and reinforce that weakened area. There are more resources about diastasis on our RU-vid channel and on TheTummyTeam.com Hope that helps!
@johntroy6969
@johntroy6969 7 лет назад
Thank you :o), but I saw another video made from a few years ago by a hernia surgeon that said only a small hole or tear in the abdominal wall can cause the belly button to bulge with either fat, fluid or the small intestine. He said surgery was the only way to correct this issue. But I see you said the connective tissue and belly button scar tissue can stretch and just cause the belly button or navel to just bulge out a little and not necessarily a hernia.

It is very possible for you to heal a 2-inch diastasis! You are not the only one. We have actually helped clients who have had as wide as a 10-finger diastasis and many clients have come to us and who have also found such success in our programs that they no longer had to consider surgery! We would love to help you. I encourage you to look into our Core Foundations program that is specifically for healing diastasis recti & helping you in strengthening your abdominal muscles. Hi again, I went to my doctor and he told me it's a diastisis. He had me lay back and then sit up slowly, a bulge will appear in my abdomen. He said I definitely have a diastisis and told me to lose weight. Is there anything else I can do? And what is your cost since I am now diagnosed.

Hi John! Weight loss isn't really the answer. I mean, will it help your overall health? Of course. But just losing weight won't do anything to repair your diastasis. I would love to talk to you about how we can help you. Will you email me at Grace@thetummyteam.com and we can continue this conversation?

@ThetummyteamWA
@ThetummyteamWA 5 лет назад
It is very possible to have both a hernia and diastasis recti. It is also possible to get misdiagnosed for a hernia when you really may have diastasis recti. Either way, we are able to help rehabilitate both by healing the diastasis and help repair the hernia. We've had many clients who have avoided surgery through doing our core rehab courses. For some of the cases that do require surgery, we have prehab options as well. You can get more information on this at online.thetummyteam.com/diastasis-recti-vs-hernia/ Let us know if you have more questions!

@ThetummyteamWA
@ThetummyteamWA 6 лет назад
Asha marry Joseph I am confident we can help you. It will take time. And you’ll likely need a few of eSessions (virtual appointments) with our therapists along with our online program. But we have healed many women with a gap as large as 10 fingers (a few even at 12 fingers). We can help you start to feel better so you are better able to take care of your family. It’s exhausting trying to function when it feels like your body isn’t doing what it’s supposed to. We get it. I would recommend an Abdominal Rehab Splint - which you can purchase from our store - and our Core Foundations Online Program. We might have to manually adjust the program for you to take it at an even slower pace. You can use our online client forum to discuss how things are going with our therapists. If they feel you need more time, they’ll adjust it for you. Let me know if you have further questions about how our program works. There is hope!

Also, can a specialist tell if it's a tear or just a stretching of the muscle wall by just looking at it? Or do they need special machines like cat scans, etc.?
@ThetummyteamWA
@ThetummyteamWA 4 года назад
Often diastasis recti (and often hernias) can be assessed with proper palpitation skills. However, many in the medical field are very unaware that they could mistake DR for a hernia. You can learn more about the specific differences at online.thetummyteam.com/diastasis-recti-vs-hernia/

Diastasis recti can cause umbilical hernias though and people do not know about this until they end up with it.

What if you don't need surgery, if no pain
@ThetummyteamWA
@ThetummyteamWA 6 лет назад
If you don't need surgery, then it's possible it's not a hernia at all, but actually a diastasis (stretching) of the tissue. Either way, if surgery is not required, then it can be corrected with functional core rehabilitation - which is different than a core workout. Our program is not exercise based, but rehab based. I would not recommend continuing a core workout until the site of the hernia/diastasis is rehabilitated, the core strengthened, and you are taught the proper muscle coordination to make sure you are engaging the core, not bracing or bulging against the abdominal wall - which is what likely lead to the injury in the first place. Our Core Foundations program would be excellent for repairing this issue. thetummyteam.com/product/core-foundations-8-week-online-program/
