Is Your House Killing You? Airthings Wave Plus Says Mine Is!

Our verdict of the Airthings Wave Plus: 8/10 - Specifically useful for radon measurements, but with a host of other sensors too. Perfect for collecting data over the long term to see trends, or if remedial actions have had any effect. The device is limited in "smart" capabilities by the reliance on Bluetooth though.

Not sure this is a good one for allergies, you might need one that measure separate particulate sizes?

you can read automatically by using a raspberry pi as a gateway. The data can then also be sent over MQTT etc.. so for me, I would prefer to pay less and get raw good quality data than extra for all the bells and whistles that I probably wouldnt use anyway...

There are alerts/notifications that it will send to you. It is under settings and then notifications. You can choose which ones you want alerts for. :) you would just need to leave Bluetooth on maybe?

This 7 day callibration thing is kind a weird. I would understand 24hours for some temperature stabilisation or something like that but 7 days? Btw data sync between phone And cloud is not working good, sometimes I received 5 samples of data into phone and no new data on cloud...

Decided against getting one installed in the end. To be honest, I think we have far bigger problems to worry about in the coming decade than a little background radiation. :(

@@MakeUseOf The high humidity might be something to keep in mind more. It could easily lead to mold. I also have heard/read about some radon levels actually being good for you. Who knows, the statistics about less lung cancer in high radon areas means are interesting. The fact there is no increased cases of lung cancer doesn't mean it isn't bad for you. If houses are badly insulated and have a lot of natural ventilation it could nullify the radon exposures. It's not all black and white. The EPA (us environmental) claims radon does cause lung cancer and it is the 2nd highest cause of lung cancer after smoking. They also say smoking AND radon exposure increases the risk more. Anyways, thanks for the video. They now have a sensor that hooks into wifi directly.

I installed a radon away fan from Amazon in my house myself. I had a contractor drill a 4" hole in my foundation floor and my foundation wall and plumbed it with 4" PVC. The fan just plugs into the wall and my radon is now very low. It was around $700 to do myself all in.

Do you know if it is an actual CO2 sensor (like NDIR) or if it's "equivalent CO2" calculated from the VOC sensor (which is meaningless)?

holy cow are those radon levels real? Here in the US they don't recommend levels over 4 pci/L. and I'm reading that right. you are in the 100s? wtf? 67% humidity? Is that real?
@MakeUseOf
@MakeUseOf 3 года назад
Our house was built in 1850, in a part of the UK that's particularly wet for a lot of the year, and known for having high radon. The humidity is correct, and I suspect the radon levels are real; though whether or not the dangers of radon are real, I'm not so sure. If it really was that dangerous, you would expect a higher prevalence of lung cancer in this part of the country (compared to relatively low radon levels elsewhere) - but that's simpy not the case over the last few decades of data. I suspect it's much the same as the japanese knotweed scams (which we also had lot of when we moved in). The radon industry is paying for misleading studies, and just so happen to offer expensive radon mitigation services. By the way, if you have japanese knotweed, it's easy to get rid of with round-up - just takes time. We've eradicated it over the last few years of living here without costly groundworks. Injecting the poison directly into the stems of the larger plants is best.
@cooloutac
@cooloutac 3 года назад
@@MakeUseOfdo others have radon levels that high though? 4-8 pci/q is what most countries recommend. Yours is really in the hundreds? I wonder if something is wrong with the device. It's like u are living in a coal mine, thank goodness u don't smoke. Lol

@@MakeUseOf So I just realized outside us they use a different measurement metric. so probably 200 is the recommended level for your area. I was wondering so the unit prolly is giving a good estimate and I doubt you have anything to worry about.

@@MakeUseOf wow! I'm not sure about accuracy of this thing. When u reset it by the changing room setting you get extreme variations. In other words it can spike to something crazy. And if u reset u get very different readings after a week. I'm thinking about returning it now. I've done charcoal test at same time and fewtomes past year and doesn't seem to be even close. And my charcoal tests don't ever change much. Think this thing not reliable for radon. Co2 and vocs seem to make sense though. I just ordered the corentium home which gets grest reviews and is actually certified. Will compare for a couple weeks one same spot. If the wave plus reports ridiculously higher it's going back.

I had a plumber tell me the industry is a scam. Just open the basement windows every so often to air out. When I sold my house (in the USA) radon testing is a contingency on the sales contract. If over 4 (USA), the seller would likely just pay for mitigation to sell the house and move on. You really have no choice. Now I'm in a different state in an apartment style building. The radon from my new Wave Plus was around 2, with a window cracked open for fresh air. After a week, I closed the window early in the morning. Over the next 12 hours the radon rose to 18. In the week since then, the radon has consistently fluctuated between 16 and 18, had a high of 20. When I left a patio door open an hour one day, the next 12 hours dipped to 9, then rose back after closing the door. I know the radon is a 24-hour rolling average of 5 minute readings, longer than the other sensors. So it takes a while to settle into to a pattern with little wavering. It is almost as high as you have. I'm thinking how I might approach this, as the numbers are a good deal higher than in my prior home. If I had young children, I'd act and get a fan set-up as it is not that much money as a one-time cost. Today, I'd check radon on any house I bought and factor that in. Surprising, in a state that is one of the highest for radon, when I drive around I don't see any (so far) radon pipes/fan going up the side of a house.

@realtyrocks1969

My radon system goes into the basement floor in a storage room and runs up the wall inside my garage and out the roof. It's on the backside of the roof so it's very difficult to see on the home driving by and looking at it. The pipe is also black and matches the roof color. You don't need to have a obvious white pipe on the side of your home. My levels were 18+ and after a system they dropped to .27 They say there are no symptoms of radon but after I got the system my migraines left. So I venture to say it's very real. If I saved myself cancer too that's a big bonus. Got my system professionally installed for $2100
