Is your Microwave tripping the breaker?

Our microwave started tripping the breaker, so it's time to search for the wiring diagram and dig a little deeper into the problem.
First, locate your model number. It's normally on the inside of the unit. You can find it on the bottom left after opening the door. That model number will allow you to search for the part that I show in the video, but specific to your model of microwave. You can also use this number to find the wiring diagram if you need a temporary-ish repair to avoid the issue of creating a dead short and tripping the breaker every time you pull on the door.
Ideally, after you make this repair, remember to either press STOP before opening the door or wait for the microwave to time out.
Thank you for watching.

@thelarewsdo
@thelarewsdo 2 месяца назад
Hey, @otgcanada Yeah, it has less to do with opening the door while it's running and more to do with natural wear of the latch itself and the placement of the monitor switch versus the other 2 switches. Once the latch gets worne a little, just the natural vibration of the microwave can be enough to disconnect the monitor switch during operation causing it to trip the breaker. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. Have a wonderful day!

@thelarewsdo
@thelarewsdo 6 месяцев назад
Hey, You're welcome. The hum could possibly mean that one of the other switches may be "welded" closed due to the previous issue. The other switches can be removed and carefully opened to verify if they are stuck or not. The side splits off revealing the internals. Sometimes if you're lucky a little coaxing can unstick the switch tips. Once they are unstuck put them back in and see if that resolves the hum. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel. Have a wonderful day!

I used a small flathead and separated them. Put everything back together and connected the middle switch this time, and now everything works great! Can't imagine how many people would have bought a new microwave. Thanks again! I worked at this for a while trying to adjust the switches and replace the switches, and replace the plastic switch holders. After looking at the schematic for my Kenmore, what I did was replace the upper microswitch with an Omron SPDT switch where I could connect to the normally closed terminal (was clipped off on the factory switch). The microswitches are the Omron D3V "Miniature Basic Switch" for reference. On the upper switch, the factory wiring connects the normally open terminal to input AC Power, and the common connection connects to the magnetron already. What I did that was the modification was to connect the previously unconnected terminal from the upper switch to the connector for the lower magnetron discharge switch, on the leg not connected to the magnetron. The lower magnetron discharge microswitch is now not connected. So basically what I did was to use the upper switch for both functions required when the door opens (cut power and discharge the magnetron). The magnetron is (already) connected to the common terminal on the upper switch, and was already connected to power on the normally open terminal. I just connected the normally closed terminal to execute the same function that the lower magnetron discharge switch did. Same functionality, but now just on one switch rather than attempting to synchronize 2 separate mechanical switches to achieve the same functionality. I made the new connection by making a male to female spade lug jumper cable, so didn't have to cut any factory wires. Works great. No more breaker tripping and the unit turns off and grounds the magnetron when the door is opened while operating.
@thelarewsdo
@thelarewsdo 8 месяцев назад
Hey! Good thinking! That solves both issues. No more microswitch that nuisance trips due to poor location; all while maintaining full functionality. I like that a alot. Switch selection is key... my monitor switch is a normally open and the other two are normally closed, so one wouldn't want to mix that up. The SPDT would work in my situation also. (D3V-16G-1C25-K) Again good thinking! Thank you for watching. Have a wonderful day!

Hey! Sounds like a plan! If you hooked all the switches back up after replacing them the issue could still be the bracket that holds them. Thank you so much for your video. I reset the clock on my microwave yesterday after a power outage which is option 3. My microwave only has four options by the way and to turn off the display mode on mine it's option 4. I waited for it off to display and pressed the start button and now my microwave is working properly again after turning off after 3 seconds for some mysterious reason. I cannot recommend this Frigidaire microwave because of this convoluted option system for changing settings. Yep, I'd say one of your other switches is welded in the closed position and can't "shut off" like it's supposed to. They can carefully be taken apart and unstuck assuming they aren't too damaged. My Frigidaire trips the breaker soon as I press start. Do you think it’s the same issue?
@thelarewsdo
@thelarewsdo 2 месяца назад
Sounds plausible that the switches are the culprit. That would be a good place to start. They can be tested individually with a multimeter to rule them out.
@BringItOn31124
@BringItOn31124 Месяц назад
It's the switches. If I just close the door and press start it trips the breaker. If I firmly close the door and simultaneously continue to apply pressure to the door and press start it never trips the breaker.
@outboardfixer
@outboardfixer 9 месяцев назад
On the key pad there is a PAUSE button....that is there for a reason. You do not pause a microwave by opening the door while it is running. Hit pause to STOP the power to the switches THEN open the door and then you don't care which switch opens or closes...there is no power to them AND you don't care where you grab the handle to open it. NO more problems with that middle pad switch getting the contacts burnt.
@thelarewsdo
@thelarewsdo 9 месяцев назад
Hey! Thank you! I'm sure that 98% of people that view this video realize that. But, over the course of owning a microwave there are extenuating circumstances or "late for work instances" where protocol isn't followed to the 'T'. The summation of these instances is what causes the issue. Life happens. P.S. Pressing the pause button just opens a set of contacts, under load, that stops the microwave; no different than opening the door. Have a wonderful day and thank you for watching.
@outboardfixer
@outboardfixer 9 месяцев назад
@@thelarewsdo PS...no it don't and why the big Shabelle about following things to a T if it don't matter? Why is pause on the key pad?? I fix them ALL the time and NO ONE uses pause.....or the ones burning the contacts together in that switch don't.
@thelarewsdo
@thelarewsdo 9 месяцев назад
I don't disagree that pressing the pause button would aid in decreasing the particular issue people are having and is good practice. Though, ultimately, by using the microwave daily over many years the latch naturally will continue to wear and the issue with the monitor switch prematurely closing becomes inevitable. I didn't exactly understand what you were getting at with your retort about following protocol to a T, but I think I can answer your question with a question. Why doesn't everyone drive exactly the speed limit or only press the elevator button once... And relays are simply actuated switches. So yes, when you press the pause button you are dropping out power to the coil on the relay which disconnects power under load from the magnetron, vent fan.... Best wishes. Keep on repairing and be safe.

Hey! Yes, from the sounds of things I'd say that the tips on the switches finally fused together. Assuming it's only the monitor that fused, unhooking it should fix it. Hey, You're welcome! Since that is one of 3 safeties, you should be fine; there are still two safeties still in the circuit. Now, if you were wanting to put it back to 100%, remember it's not the switch that is causing the real issue. The wear on the latch is what is causing the switch to activate when it shouldn't, so you'd have to replace the latch. Thank you for watching! Remember to like and subscribe. Have a wonderful day!

How does the latch contact 3 switches with 2 hooks?
@thelarewsdo
@thelarewsdo 2 месяца назад
Hey, The two " points" of the hooks actuate one switch each and the round part of the bottom hook (I think it was the bottom) also press in on the third. That's the one that has the issues. Once there is alittle play in the door latch the monitor switch can change state before the other two. Hope that makes sense. Watch the video again and you should be abile to see it, now that you know what to look for. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. Have a wonderful day.

@@thelarewsdo Got it ! I have no problem with the switched ( I dont think) as the latch spring holder broke off, Of course they dont make them anymore, but I found one that has the same dimension and am waiting for it to arrive. While I have it apart I held the latch with door open and pressed down on the top and bottom switch and fuse blew. I knew that it had to do something with the middle switch mounted near the bottom but I did not pull out plastic piece that holds switches and could not see how the middle switch was activated. I had a latch spring holder break on a previous microwave and I drilled a new hole to hold the spring. There is much less room to drill to hook a spring on with this latch. the GE latch I found was placed on a one inch square graph paper to show dimensions and I made same grid paper and everything matched up. With my luck it will be slightly off.. worth a try for $9.00. Luckily I keep a spare microwave in attic for times like these. I paid a fortune for this and it is 3 months past warranty. If it comes down to it I can print a 3d copy or make a mold. Im the typr of person who will try and make things work by making my own parts. I remember using rubber bands for my VCR when they no longer made belts for it.

It noise stays on so we have to keep the door open unless we’re using it. What does that mean? Should I even use it when it makes that sound? Thanks for the great video.
@thelarewsdo
@thelarewsdo Год назад
Hey June! It sounds like one of the other interlock switches is "melted" in the closed position due to the monitor switch shorting things out. This is an unsafe condition since two of the three safeties are compromised and if someone accidentally closes the microwave and leaves, it could lead to a fire. I would suggest ordering the bracket that is worn down and the 3 switches then change them out. It should cost less than $75 if you shop around. It'll be an easy fix as long as you unplug the machine, take pictures, and mark your wires for when you go back together. Thank you for watching! Hey, Pressing the stop button doesn't stop it? This is a response I sent to another individual, it may help. "It sounds like the tips of the switches talked about in the video are melted together. Test the three switches by pressing the little white buttons that stick out of the sides of them. ( make sure your microwave is unplugged ofcourse) If the button doesn't click that's your culprit. You can remove the problem switches one by one and open/split the sides to see the internals. Next, use a small screwdriver and carefully pop the tips back apart then reinstall them. Hope this helps." Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. Have a wonderful day!

Hey Andrew, I'm glad it was able to help you out! Does it buzz all the time or just when the microwave is running? If it's only when it's running, my immediate guess would be the plastic cover you removed to get into the machine is slightly out of alignment and vibrating, loose screw, or the disconnected monitor plug is touching against the microwave and resonating. Hey Andrew, You're welcome, glad to help. Honestly, if I was going to replace the latch itself, not the hook, I'd do the 2-3 switches that it holds also. They've taken a beating every time that monitor switch shorted the circuit. The switches have small pads that touch together to complete the circuit and when they are under a high load some of the contact surface transfers from one of the pads to the other. Over time, instead of being smooth they are jagged and don't contact each other as well, hence the buzzing.

@thelarewsdo
@thelarewsdo Год назад
Just the piece that holds the switches. There's little tabs on that piece that click down into holes on the switches the hold them in. Using a small screw driver and an extra set of hands you lightly pry the tabs up and slide out the switches. BUT, if the breaker trips as soon as you start the microwave the monitor switch it probably "welded" in the closed position from arching and will need replaced also. Personally, I first try disconnecting the monitor switch plug and if that fixes it you've found the gremlin. Thanks for watching and let us know if you have any more questions.

I have the same problem but my house runs on a 4000 watt pure sine wave inverter . Some thing about the microwave oven that is brand new , that when it starts it trips the inverter . and the entire house goes down . I have cooked entire meals using my air fry toaster oven ( 1800 watts ) , hot plate ( 1000 watts ) , AC on low ( 580 watts ) , fridge ( 120 watts ) , freezer ( 120 watts ) , and the rest of the house that totaled 3375 watts all at the same time with no issues . It is just something about the start on the microwave that causes the inverter to trip and the rated watts for the microwave is only 1350 watts . So... the cure to this was to simply turn the power down on the microwave to 6 instead on 10 and it runs just fine . My oven is a Master Chef . I have even plugged the microwave strait into the inverter with nothing else plugged in and same thing . Hope this helps if you have the same problem .

@thelarewsdo
@thelarewsdo Год назад
Hey, The breaker is getting overloaded. Your kitchen breaker is probably a 20 amp breaker. The microwave pulls ~12 amps and the air frier pulls ~12 amps so combined your are at 24+ amps; That's why it's tripping. You may want to check if the outlets on your counter are on different breakers and move your air frier to a different location. The popping and cracking in the breaker box means the screw holding the wire into the breaker is loose and needs tightened; this needs addressed asap. The popping and cracking is arcing which can lead to a fire. It's a super easy fix, BUT requires knowledge of electricity to safely fix it. Hope this helps answer your questions. @thelarewsdo Год назад
Hey Dimitri, Interesting idea, but I have a few thoughts. 10 gauge wire is a bear to work with as far as bending and "squishing" into single outlet boxes. Plus, I'm not to sure that most 15/20 amp outlets are designed to adequately secure 10 gauge wire behind the terminals. If you breaker panel is large enough, one thought would be to home run each of your kitchen outlets with 12 gauge wire. This will give you 20 amps available at each outlet, it isolates the appliances and the wire is easier to work with. Hope this helps. Have a wonderful day and thank you for watching.
