Nice video as always 😁 I have two turntables. One belt driven Philips GA 312 from 1978 (I bought it in May 78, works perfect) It has strobe ringes on top of the platter. And I can manually adjust the speed with 2 knobs on the side. And I have one direct driven Audio Technica At-LP 120 with strobe rings and light on the side of the platter. So it is easy to check the speed on both turntables. Have a nice weekend and rock on 😁😁😁

You as well @SuperSagedal ! Have a great weekend! (jealous about the ability to adjust the speed)

I've got a great story. A few yrs back when the Go Go's were in the news, I bought their 1st album on vinyl. I'd heard an interview with Belinda and she said that first record was sped up in the mix. But when I played their GH cd, the vinyl was still way faster. So I bought a laser sensor, and sure enough my Denon dp-300f was spinning way to fast. It was I believe over 35 rpm. On-line message boards said my Denon was made for sale in the Tokyo Market and was gauged at 50 hz. I had been listening to records spinning way to fast and never caught on! Anyway, it was a nightmare to correct because the tiny setting screws were underneath with only a ( + -) arrow directions barely visible I might add. You had to guess how much to turn the screw, stop what your doing, power it back on, check your speed, repeat until you get it right. And that was just for the 33 1/3. Last X-mas I gave that TT to my niece and bought a new upgraded Denon DP-400f and the first thing I did was check the speed with the laser gun!

That's crazy! It's fun y how ears get used to something until something like that draws it to your attention. What laser are you using for measurement?

@@TheJoyofVinylRecords - Hey Rick. It was the same Neiko you showed in the video. Put a piece of shiny tape on the platter, point and shoot. I have an entirely upgraded stereo system nower days. And added an Ortofon Red stylus and Pro-Ject Phono Box DC. A much better listening experience.....At least I think it is???😁

Hi Rick. Another great video. My Technics SL-D5 direct drive changer has strobe rings on the side of the platter for both 50 and 60 htz, and pitch control so it is pretty easy to check the speed and adjust if needed. My Realistic LAB 58 belt drive changer has a 24 pole synchronous AC motor and I use an iPhone app called RPM. If the speed is off on that one, I wouldn't have a clue how to adjust it, but so far it hasn't been a problem.

Having it on the side of the platter is convenient! Easily the best of all solutions.

Hi Rick. I have a Pioneer PL-630, which is direct drive with Phase Lock Loop Quartz Lock. I have always trusted that turntable’s speed, but this video has encouraged me to actually test it with a strobe light. I’ll be shopping for one.

Strobe disc and then fine adjustment on the ADS power supply plus speed adjuster with my VPI TT. Very easy. Also downloaded an app, but have not used it yet. Just enjoying the music.

Another great topic. I had a Rega 1+ turntable and when I upgraded earlier this year I wanted to stay with Rega but get an improved tone arm and cartridge. My choices, at the time, were a Planar 3 or 6. I chose the Planar 6 and one of the influencing factors was the Neo electronic speed controller. This promised a more stable speed and a voltage based speed changer. Rega have since introduced a Planar 3 with the electric speed control as a limited edition. I am pleased with my choice, I love the sound and ease of speed change is a bonus. But it is still subject to the vagaries of the belt. I don’t have a spare and I haven’t tested the speed accuracy, I suppose I have relied on Rega’s manufacturing and quality control. Perhaps a speed app is needed to reassure me? I wonder what worries Rick will present us with next week😂😂

I've heard so many good things about the Planar 6 and the speed controller. That's a great setup Patrick. So many worries.... lol

I upgraded my P3 to the 24v motor and Neo power supply, and I also went for the new Reference EBLT belt - the combination gives me the best speed stability I've ever had from Rega. Also, the Neo itself made an improvement to the sound - not sure why, maybe better isolation from power supply noise in addition to the stability.

Haven't thought about the speed too much with my Fluance RT85. But I had a Denon Dp300f prior to that with a speed issue. Sounds like a good idea to check it especially if something doesn't sound right. I do miss the strobe light my old Technics had.

My tweaked Thorens TD-150MKII is ever so slightly off in speed. Your only table adjustment is for the belt reaction, not for speed. Only fix is to buy a remote speed controller. Hold onto your hats, they ain't cheap!

I need to look into those speed controllers. If you have any recommendations let me know.

The problem with the phone apps is that they're dependent on the accuracy of the phone gyroscope - I've had different results from different phones, at the same time on the same turntable. I just use a strobe disc.

I've seen the same thing with different results depending on the application.

Try the phone app while playing a record. Should bring the 33.9 reading closer to 33.3 due to drag from the stylus and added weight of the record.
