Isaac Button was the last true English country potter. In a day, he could turn a ton of clay into pots. When timed he threw a lump of clay on to the wheel, pulled it high, then cut it off with wire in 22 seconds. In an hour, he could turn out 120 pots. In a day, 1,200.
Isaac Button died in 1969 and his kiln, at Soil Hill, near Halifax, now lies cold and desolate.
In his day, speed was essential. Even before the packaging revolution, household pots and jugs made from clay were treated as disposables. They cost only a few pence. Craftsmen potters had to be quick to earn a living from poorly-paid villagers.

Being a professional potter throwing every day for my living, and seeing many not so great potters on youtube, I want to say that Isaac is absolutely great, in an ever so down to earth, humble way. I give this man deep respect and wished I could have assisted him. This is a true master potter. I am in awe. Thanks for posting. I think the music you chose is very fitting for this master's art.

Love the fact that he throws while casually keeping his pipe in his mouth, AND while wearing a suit and tie. That man was a master and had style. What amazing talent.

The story I heard is that on the day the film people asked him to throw the large jar he had not prepared clay stiff enough for a tall closed form so he used softer clay he had handy . Which explains that little smile when he finished it successfully

Button was a potting machine in a time pottery had significant utility value and still he made pennies for his efforts. I think people are waiting for a miracle material to be invented when pottery was it.

Thanks for posting. I must have seen the original film dozens of times as a child, though strange hearing music instead of just the clatter of a projector. My dad's a lifelong potter and pottery teacher and he used to play this film to each new class.

I love that he is throwing with a shirt and tie! Not something that one sees very often among us scruffy potters nowadays....I wonder what the little cylinders were going to be used for...anyone knows? Thanks for posting this video, it's great!

I've had it for years. Though as you say I think it's a bit hard to get hold of nowadays.

hahahahahahaha! without Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada..... pottery wouldnt be what it is today. just goes to show how un-appreciative people are these days and can only focus great talent on one person. i love it how people think some one is such a great potter because he throws big. i thought only high school students thought that....? maybe im wrong. hahaha! but this too is great and Isaac Button is right up Leach's and Hamada's alley. maybe in your isolated world he rated high enough.

Hi! I'm a pottery teacher/studio technician in Coquitlam, BC, Canada. I've been watching the Isaac Button video over and over! I can't watch it enough. I've sent my students the RU-vid link and they too are, of course, amazed. I would absolutely love to get more information on Isaac Button and Soil Hill. Any information would be very much appreciated!
