She's also almost looks scared when she sees Mirabel and seems to be just telling her to go away instead. Has the feel of "stay back I don't want to hurt you". Like that was the first sign she wasn't as in control as she thought she was.

@@yay29823yeah, but they only started paying attention to Luisa when it was clear she was hurting, but if she hadn’t I doubt they would’ve paid any attention at all. I know there’s things that we don’t know, as the audience our perspective is limited to what’s shown, but aside from that instance, was there ever an instance where the parents intervened on Luisa or Isabela’s behalf, no. Even with this whole marriage proposal thing, they never once pulled Isabela aside and asked her if that was what she really wanted, yet throughout the movie they both go out of their way to do that for Mirabel, they both confronted Abuela about her harshness, but we never see the same concern for Luisa and Isabela’s well being, and I understand from their perspective they seemed fine, and I can understand a greater concern for Mirabel’s well being as she’s the only one in the family without a gift, however this does not excuse the negligence, as a parent it is your responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of each child you have, even if they were caring towards Mirabel, could we say the same for the other two, and only responding when there’s something clearly wrong isn’t really being a good parent either in my opinion, you should be there to support no matter what. It doesn’t take much for the parents to just pull them aside and ask them how everything’s going, especially the dad as he doesn’t have many other responsibilities besides being a dad, the mother has a whole town to heal, so I could understand for her, but even so they should’ve payed an equal amount of attention to all three.

For as long as the sisters acted like they were fine (which was what they were forced to do by Abuela Alma), the parents would never check if they were okay. Julieta, Pepa and Bruno likely had the same upbringing, seeing as Alma is their MOTHER so they know damn well the kind of pressure she puts on the family. One ran off, the rest just succumbed to it and let their own children suffer the same way. They do not get to escape the blame here, they knew what Alma was doing to their kids and they let it happen. The fathers had to have known too, unless they never truly got to know their wives.

Isa seems to have it out for Dolores in particular, going out of her way to mock, hurt and humiliate her cousin simply for not speaking up at her wedding. I felt that in this universe, both Dolores and Isabella are jealous of each other, though for different reasons than Mirabel and Isabella are. Dolores, obviously, is upset due to Isabella marrying the man that she was in love with for so many years, though there is also an inferiority complex in there as well; due to Abuela’s clear preference of Isa and her more “perfect” gift: Isa’s powers are both practical and pretty: she can grow flowers to bring joy to the village and take care of the near-infinite food supply at her disposal. Meanwhile Dolores’s super-hearing is shown to be incredibly painful to her, and it is seen as mostly invasive by the villagers. She’s just a nosy little gossip, how on earth can she compare to the perfect, delicate, favorite Isabella for Mariano’s love? So Dolores stood by, quiet, shoving all those feelings down and hid them because it was far too painful to bear. She never knew the extent of Isa’s suffering; her cousin never dropped her facade at all while she was married to Mariano. In this way, she too made a sacrifice for her family. But Isabella never thought of them. To her, Dolores got the easier end of the deal: sure, she was hopelessly in love with Mariano, and yeah yeah she must be dealing with a bunch of heartbreak right now, but eventually she’ll get over it and find some new hot gossip to spread all around the place with that sharp hearing of hers. Meanwhile, Isabella cannot escape the marriage at all, nor the weight of her family’s expectations of her. She is trapped wearing this mask till the day she dies, forced to bear and raise children that she’s not ready for, caring for a husband that she didn’t want, and never quite exploring any of the full limits of her powers. Always making perfect, aesthetically pleasing blossoms, keeping up the act of the perfect princess whether she wanted to or not. So when she snapped, she thought, ‘why not have some fun with Dolores?’ Mocking her powers and her love for an ordinary man, humiliating her by forcing the girl to dance and out her feelings, which she had fought so hard to conceal, to her family and Mariano and his family. After all, for all of Dolores’s melodramaticism, she surely could not have suffered even close to how Isa was feeling right now…right? And even after Mirabel saved them (and her) Isabella doesn’t even spare her cousin a single glance or apology. But Dolores would not forget, as she glared at the woman who ruined her life and her love… after so many years of suppressing her feelings all for the family, all for HER… this was the treatment that she gets? Purposely targeted, mocked and laughed at for her love, puppetered against her will and forced to dance with the man that she loved oh so much, now knowing that he’ll never dare love her back…she thought the wedding was bad, but oh, this was so much worse. So much worse. The gazes of their parents, her abuela… as she was danced around like a dumb, clumsy, stupid little doll… then cast away without a single thought. It was always Isabela. Even NOW, after she attacked her family and destroyed their home… it was always about her, wasn’t it? It was Isa who was being hugged and comforted and given a second chance. She came first in EVERYTHING…. with Mariano, her Abuela, even Mirabel…. No one, not even her own family, spared a passing glance at the dumb, nosy, embarrassing mess that was Dolores. Well, it won’t be like this for long… she’ll make them HEAR her. And it will be every bit as painful for them as it was for her.

Petty side note aside, I really like how both still deeply care and love each other with Isabela trying her best to warn Mirabel when her rage is about to burst any minute now and Mirabel risking herself trying to "bring down" her sister.

I don't think Delores don't see it that way, truthfully I feel Delores knows everyone's pain and she can see (or rather hear) it but she doesn't have the power to do anything (or feel she doesn't) so she stands by and watch/listen. She's a spectator I feel like who feels the pressure of their abuela since she is also one of the oldest. She doesn't go against anything her abuela said at any point, and even if she loved the man her cousin didn't she didn't say anything because it's what her abuela wanted. I feel like Delores maybe did pity Isabella and related to her, but isa (being the villain in this because duh that's what the whole song is lol-) mocked her and belittled her own sacrifices

Isabela dared to feel this way when she had all Dolores ever wanted- Abuela 's love, Mariano's love, perfection- she knew it would probably destroy her like it did Bruno, but still. Maybe she thinks that Camilo would never even rush to help her like Mirabel did. And then Isabela told everyone about her crush? Mocking her for her feelings?

I guess, but that argument feels very hypocritical coming from Isabela of all people, she was the same one who never told Abuela or at least Mariano that she never wanted to marry him. It feels very much like victim blaming. Dolores’ actions are partially influenced by Isabela’s actions, so if Isabela wasn’t going to stand up for herself and make a decision, how was Dolores supposed to? I mean, it isn’t her fault Isabela didn’t want to tell anyone the truth, yes it would’ve been hard, but she’s a person, she has the agency to say no if she pleases, and blaming Dolores for something she herself didn’t have the courage to do is hypocritical and petty. Also, Isabela arguably had all the power in that situation, as she was the “perfect girl” if she would’ve said no, there’s a chance Abuela would’ve called off the marriage, if anyone else said it she would’ve surely refused. Also, it does work out in Abuela’s favor in the end, because Mariano does in fact get married to a Madrigal, just not the one he intended to at first.

Well, you could argue the same for the majority of the people here, they weren’t at all responsible for Isabela’s suffering, quite frankly the only reason why Isabela didn’t take it out on Mirabel is because she’s the one who helped her reach her true potential. But aside from that, Isabela couldn’t care less, we’ve seen her torment Mirabel throughout the movie, despite the fact that Mirabel did nothing to contribute to Isabela’s suffering, Dolores doesn’t either, the only thing she’s guilty of is inaction, for not telling Mariano about her true feelings, and the parents are guilty of ignorance, for not asking Isabela sooner about her feelings. The only one who’s truly guilty is Abuela for forcing this marriage on Isabela in the first place. That’s truly who Isabela should’ve confronted on this matter, but the rest are just easy scapegoats to blame for her inaction. She herself could’ve ended her misery long ago by just telling the truth, in fact she herself contributes to other people’s misery by not being honest, so is there really one person to blame here? Blaming Dolores for not telling Mariano about her true feelings, in essence shows a lack of self-awareness and reflection on her actions up until this point. Dolores hid the truth because she felt trapped and that there was no other choice, the same way that Isabela felt. So how can she blame Dolores for this, when she really only did the same thing Isabela did all her life?

It certainly says something that Alma had more interaction with Isabella than Isabella’s own parents. Given that Mirabel is the main protagonist and the family scapegoat, it makes sense why her parents gave her more attention and spoke up for her against Alma. But sadly, I don’t think they ever checked in with Isabella or picked up signs that their eldest daughter wasn’t too happy about her engagement. It’s definitely one of the awful things about being the family golden child. Everyone assumes that you are ok and your life is perfect, thereby you are perfect, when that is so far from the truth. No wonder Isa lashed out at her parents in this AU.

Yeah, I would had liked to also see Luisa in the final bit! Like breaking/untangling the vines of Isabella and helping Mirabel get through them, then sing the final bits the three of them (she knows also carries yhe family burdens, she can relate) and in the end give her sisters squeezing bear hug!
