So appreciate your teaching especially as it pertains to the microcosm. I had a dream last month. A baby boy lifeless as I'd not fed him all day. I nursed him but then he was stolen from me. I searched all the little boy faces but did not find him. I do believe he was the archetype of Ishmael in me!! I'm nourishing him now..lots of inner child work and maturing as time goes on.

A wonderful teaching, Rabbi. I did want to clarify one thing based on what you said about Christianity: Jesus Christ said for us to "Turn the other cheek, when someone strict us." We're supposed to fight people with the Word of G-d and not physically... Therefore any "Christian" who has harmed someone by forcing people to convert or die by a physical sward , is not doing the TRUE will of our Lord Jesus Christ. I appreciate the fact the Rabbi saying that Ishmael was the first born son from wife Hajar. Then later miraculously, Sara at an old age gave birth to Isaac. It makes sense.

When one remembers that the first murder happened by one brother against his own..it exposes that the heart is exceedingly wicked. We don’t have to look at religious, racial or cultural differences as the reason, they’re simply the vehicle for expression of that evil. Thanks be to the most high, he has the answer for us all.

I can relate to it all. I’ve been the black sheep of my entire family for as long as I’ve been alive. It doesn’t mean they’re wrong and I’m right or vice versa. But I do see that we’re two extremes and it’s all about learning how to maintain balance. It’s the hardest thing to do and as long as no one is willing to do what’s necessary to create balance of all things, unfortunately not much will change.

When the Roman Christians expelled the house of Issac from the lands of G-d, it was the house of Ishmael who answered. Indeed the love has no bounds. We need coexistence not conflict between brothers. We all serve and submit ourselves to the same higher power. We need peace and union. (May peace and blessings be with our prophets)

But the good qualities of Ismael could have benefited Isaac. Sara and Ibrahim were wise believers. I think it wasn't because of a conflict or a possible bad influence on Isaac. I think it was simply a plan decided by the creator to separate them so that they can both found their nations.

Great discussion. I totally agree with the archetypal description the Rabbi gives. Ishmael was expelled from the family at the age of 14….. it seems quite natural that Ishmael may have been dominant over Isaak because of his age and because of the bloodline threat… maybe this is what Sarai felt when she insisted that he and Hagar were banished to the desert. However anyone in todays age would know that if you surrogated a child and then had a natural born child there may be issues and both parents would have to be very open hearted and loving of both children. My feeling is the problem between the brothers was not so much between Ismael and Isaak it was Sarai that caused the breakdown….she wanted Abrahams legacy his inheritance to go to her son Isaak not Hagar’s son Ishmael. (Sometimes we need to look at the destructive seeds that women contribute in history.) Also the Rabbi says ismael had no boundaries and was aggressive and Isaak was disciplined…. Personally I see both traits in both cultures…. So I personally do t think that description is binding. In fact I think it’s a contentious topic that needs far more consideration.

I have a question: The name "Israel" at the time it was given to "Jacob", was it a masculine or a feminine name?

What balance/boundaries and discipline did Jacob's sons (Isaac's side) have when they threw their brother (Joseph) and left him for dead? On top of that, they lied to their father saying that he had been eaten by a wolf. Could you explain the discipline there?

Peace to anyone willing to accept...If what the Rabbi say is true then why do Jews believe they are the Chosen ones?...Chosen for what?...why creating conflict with separation?...divide and rule have been the modus operandi of the Jews since their Zionistic Organisation came into being and because of their believe that they are the only one's worthy of the Love of The Creator. Ismael and Isaac were pure prophets and perfect people from God they were never in conflict with each other it the followers who came much much later who drifted away from the teachings of the prophets of God and Satan took them to his camp and wanted to divide the faith which is one and only one God sends all prophets with the same message

Genesis 21: 9 - 9 But Sarah noticed[a] the son of Hagar the Egyptian-the son whom Hagar had borne to Abraham-mocking.[b] 10 So she said to Abraham, “Banish[c] that slave woman and her son, for the son of that slave woman will not be an heir along with my son Isaac!” Deuteronomy 21:15-17 If a man has two wives, the one loved and the other unloved, and both the loved and the unloved have borne him sons, if the firstborn son belongs to the unloved, then it shall be in the day he wills what he has to his sons, he cannot make the son of the loved the firstborn before the son of the unloved, who is the firstborn. But he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the unloved, by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the beginning of his strength; to him belongs the right of the firstborn.

I don't get it. How old was Ishmael when Isaac was born ? I read that Ismael was about 12 years older than his brother Isaac. So how could there Bea conflict between the two. Furthermore, if Ishmael and his mother were sent away when Isaac was still a little lad, how could there be a clash of personalities between the two brothers? Can you also expound on what your sources are ? Did that clash happen later when they where grown men ? Also why did the romans destroy the temple if they are descendants of Abraham. Is this prophesied that descendants of Esau would be romans who will destroy the temple ?

Sarah herself allowed Abraham to marry with Hagar and have child beacuse Sarah was not able to gave birth . But after many years Sarah gave birth to Isaac.

If Abraham refused to send Hagar and Ishmael away (which he has the ability to do) and taught Issac and Ishmael to get along, there might not be the conflict we have today. Certainly siblings and half siblings still may not get along but sending them away directed them on a path of opposition

It would be interesting to listen to a debate between this good Rabbi, Sheikh Imran Hosein and a Christian like Alex Thomson (UK Column News). Many things we have in common. Also, in terms of what we call the Old Testament. However, it appears that Christians have more fundamentally in common with Islam than Judaism. This by the fact that we both accept Jesus as the Messiah, the son of the Virgin Mary and God’s divine King on earth. It is sad to see so much evil emanating from Israel today (as in the days before the fall of Jerusalem) - as there are so many good Jewish people. I know this as I grew up partly in a Jewish neighborhood. I found far more good than bad. We could live well together. Without argument and with love. Christian and Jew. This was in Johannesburg. At that time a city in Apartheid South Africa. It appears to me today that none of the good Jewish people I met then made it apparently to the upper echelons of most extremist / terroristic regime(s?) in Israel / USA. In fact, I see so many parallels to racist Apartheid South Africa in Israel. I hated Apartheid / Oligarchy / Fascism then - and I still do now. However, also no real Christians at all are in our western regimes any more. No real scholarly to the Koran Muslims are leaders in Muslim countries today. Good ones are removed illicitly. Dear God, I hope we can overcome evil and via new good leaders find a way to unite in love / friendship - whilst maintaining our most wonderful unique individual differences in everything else we all are! Now I feel that Abraham should not have listened to Sarah and keep his two sons if one son is rejected and sent away he will be angry and suffer And leave a collective conscience of being rejected unloved uncared unfairness which will lead rebellion and war I think

He's added complexity, where there was none, other than that from people like him, who re-created complexity, which had been ignored for centuries, except for the occasional riot, barely noticeable against the background of riots, massacres and wars elsewhere around the world. That was while Jews had lived largely in peace with everyone else, until somebody invaded Palestine, and wiped it off the map. Palestine was never invaded by Palestinians, so how could it have been wiped off the map, without having been invaded ? Who could have done that then ?

Hello Rabi. Although as a child I was not exposed to any sort of religion since I came from a broken family; I, nevertheless, have always been fascinated by the Bible. As a child I read about Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Isaac, and Ishmael and thus have equated that story with the basic Middle East hostilities. Because Abraham sent Hagar and Ishmael into the desert where they ran out of water, it seemed to me that act was equivalent to a death sentence for Hagar and Ishmael, and that was the true source of an ensuing hatred that has never been assuaged, even after 3800 years. The harsh reality is that one child is revered and the other is banished to die in the dessert. The "chosen child" that has evolved into the "chosen race" remains the point of contention to this day. Perhaps it would be helpful to address this age-old conflict from a psychological standpoint now that we have the Jungian viewpoint from which to consider the unconscious aspects of this psychic wound.

They said: Yes. Then he said: Then, don’t yell at him, but thank God that He has protected you from any sins. They said to him: Should we hate him? He said to them: Hate his actions and if he leaves those bad actions then he is your brother.

With all due respect Rabbi, 2 billion Muslims (quarter of humanity) are NOT descendants of Ismail. A small fraction of them are.

How likely is it that two sons of Abraham both of whom are blessed and men of God would have disagreements? Especially the sons of Abraham.

Many of the Jews lie about this topic frequently. Abraham peace be upon him took Hagar as his wife. Ishmael peace be upon him was blessed through his father by God who promised to make him multiply, be great and to be blessed. The Holy Quran attests to the fact that Isaac peace be upon him was granted prophethood and kingship. But the sons of Israel became corrupt time after time and disobeyed God and sought to mislead “the gentiles” as they say. Islam=submission to our Creator. It is the way of all of the prophets of Almighty Allah.

I listened to your sermon only because I like Rabbi Tovi but you are not him at all! He has something you lack immensely and that is a spine, truthfulness, honour, reliability and I could go on!! Firstly the Muslim world is not Arab ha ha ha ha I mean a secondary school kid knows this!! You see Islam is not based on race it’s based on pure monotheism and righteousness in word and deed!! There are Muslims from every race of the world! Yes the prophet Muhammad عليه السلام is a direct descendant of the Prophet Ismaaeel عليه السلام as is the tribe of Quraish as a whole! So not All Arabs are descendants of Ismaeel عليه السلام although today a large percentage are ! In fact the direct descendants of the Prophet Muhammad عليه الصلاة والسلام are in their millions!! As for your claim about the reason for Hajars emigration being because of Ibrahim’s wife Sarah saying what you said then that’s pure lies and slander against Ismaeel عليه السلام because it was God Almighty who ordered Ibrahim عليه السلام to take his son and his mother to Mecca because that was the plan of Allah! Yes it was Sarah’s jealousy that caused it but it was Allahs command. Ibrahim عليه السلام took his family to Mecca and built the house of God the Ka’bah or the mosque or synagogue in your world! Then he returned and built the temple in Jerusalem with his Son Ishaaq! Incidentally the direction of the prayer in the beginning of Islam was Jerusalem! The Prophet Muhammad longed for it to become Mecca but Allah made him wait until the day it was revealed to him whilst leading the prayer to face Mecca and so part of the prayer was towards Jerusalem and the other Mecca hence that mosque is called the mosque of the two prayer directions! Great video Rabbi however, jihad translates to "struggle" or "strive" as in striving for God or exerting your upmost effort. There are various types of jihads as well such as "jihad of the soul" trying to maintain purity of soul, increase faith, and promote good while denouncing evil, for example. Rabi, when you say Ishmael was very passionate in following religion, what religion was that ? How do we call that religion? That religion is the religion of Abraham , the religion of Monotheism. In Arabic it is called Islam.

I think it's great that we're talking about these things. But I think like you said that this problem is deeper than we even understand because it is on a spiritual level and that is that the non Jews have not been accepted by the Jew in a positive way. Both Ismail and Ishaque pbuthem are god messengers and are full of discipline and humble. Ismail brought to Arabian peninsula when he was infant and much before the birth of Ishaque pbuh.

Why didn't he mention that When God made the promise to Abraham and Sarah that they would have a child who would inherit God's promise to Abraham , God meant a child Fathered by Abraham through Sarah , who is Isaac . God also gave Ishmael protection because he was of the blood and flesh of Abraham , but God's promise to Abraham is through Isaac .

The J3wish tradition was whoever was the first born was the inheritance but because Ismael didn’t came from Sarah they rejected him and put him as a wild beast. The same with Prophet Muhammad peace be upon them both. Because he was an Arab prophet they rejected him except for few J3ws . Allāh is very clear in his Quran : The Yahood and the Nazareth will never be happy with him until you believe in what they believe. I’m sure if Muhammad was from the children’s Of Israel they would accept him as a prophet but since he wasn’t then there’s no more to say.

I personally,an studying all 3 faiths. And have found more incommon with all 3 , Rather the then differences. And it's so beautiful. To see the love that each religion has for God.

Thank you for your words of wisdom. Listening to you gives me good advise. It helps me to find a way back to the peace and security i felt when i was a child. My parents taught me to appreciate the differences as a possibility to learn from each other. No matter how many differences there are there will be always more things that connect all living beings. My family is christian and i grew up as one, but i had a hard time and started to grew more radical when i was a young adult. This caused my believe to crush and me loosing hope. Ending with me searching for something to hold on for nearly two third of my life. Only a few years ago i found the courage to read the bible again and i started to read it more as a philosophical book like i did as a child rather than a book of strict laws like i did as a young adult. But i noticed i need to hear the views of others in order to keep it healthy for me because it is like drinking too much wine on empty stomach if i don't.

There was and is no quarrel between the adult Isaac and his brother Ishmael. Yahweh protected Hagar and ishmael as a sign to Abraham. The Jews were waiting for the promised Messiah, when prophet Mohammad come in they asked him all the questions and he has answered all of them. The only reason Jews did not accept prophet Mohammad as that long time promised Messiah because he was not from Banu Israel meaning he was not Jew but from Ban Quraish meaning Arabs.

In Islam, there was no conflict between Isaac and Ishmael AS. We muslim do not distinguish between them. Even in the Torah Isaac AS bought Hagar back to Ibrahim AS. They were not adversaries. In Islam, Ishmael AS was destined to rebuilt the Kaaba and then later a prophecy to pass to Prophet Muhammad (saw). So Ishmael AS had to go. Abrahim AS had prayed for sons and their progeny to have sole prophecy, Allah swt answered that prayer, for Isaac AS progeny had prophecy for while then later when limits were reached when people turned on the Prophets on several occassions, after Allah swt forgive and forgave again, then continued to do same sin of harming and disobediences to Prophet, only a handful remained good so prophecy left Isaac AS progeny and passed finally to Ishmael AS progeny through Prophet Muhammad (saw) the final proplhet.

Sweet story that unfortunately misses the truth about Ishmael who the Bible says was a contentious person full of strife. From the pages of the Bible I cannot find the love attributed to brother Ishmael.

I taught religion for 20 years in Catholic schools and have tried to convey what you have said in my classes. You have explained it so much better. I stopped at Abraham and blamed him for the conflict for sending Ishmael into the desert but I now understand it was not Abraham's fault for each of us have free will and Ishmael did not have the discipline he needed. Thank you Rabbi. I feel all schools should teach biblical studies so these rabble rousers would understand better.
