This film about Islam in Leeds today was created for the Voices of Asia Gallery at Leeds City Museum.
Lassad Laouini from Leeds Grand Mosque sings the call to prayer as we see views of the seven mosques in Leeds. Dr Qari Asim, Imam of Makkah Masjid mosque, explains the core beliefs of Islam, the belief in God, Muhammad, peace be upon him, and the Qur’an.
The film goes through the Five Pillars of Islam. The first pillar is Believing in One God, and Muhammad as his messenger, expressed in the Shahada, the declaration of faith. The second pillar is Praying Five Times a Day, for which Lassad gives us some details. The third pillar is Sawm or fasting, especially during Ramadan. The fourth pillar is Zakah, regular and compulsory giving to charity, explained by Afshan Hussain of Leeds Grand Mosque. The fifth pillar is Hajj, making a spiritul pilgrimage to Mecca, a once in a lifetime objective if you can afford it and are well enough.
