The reason I'm asking is that Iran is full of women who didn't emigrate and who DO have engineering-degrees. 60% of Iranian university-studies are women, in line with most western countries, but the difference is that in Iran, women DON'T study flouncy pseudo-academic bollocks like "gender-studies." In Iran, both men and women actually get real degrees - maths, chemistry, physics, engineering, etc.... Proper, traditional academic disciplines. On my return from Iran, this was what had really impressed me - NOBODY there has a wishy-washy degree in "marketing" or "communications," or any other airhead pseudo-academic shite like that..... It seems to me that a society which really wanted to disempower women WOULDN'T be equipping them en masse with degrees in maths, chemistry and engineering.

I'm not an ex-muslim, never lived in an Islamic country or know everything about Islam. But unlike many leftists, apologists and Muslims I did read enough to conclude that Islam is not all peace, love, and tolerance. People who blindly say "Islam means peace" should take a break, sit down and read and THEN come back with real evidence that backs up their claims. Islam is an ideology with 3 aspects. One religious, one legal (sharia) and one political (the caliphate). Islam is a religion of peace AND war. Example: Go outside alone without wearing any Islamic dress to identify themselves as Muslim. What got me, is she actually thought that would convince people of her bullshit. I asked, okay provide proof of women walking around outside on their own in Saudi Arabia, not adhering to an Islamic dress code. She was not able to do it. An entire bloody country, and she had the gall to say there was no Islamic dress code for women.

The prophet then continued on to what’s called the Lote-Tree of the Farthest Limit, and it was then when Gabriel told him he’d have to go it alone. There, the prophet spoke directly to God. He commanded him to instruct Muslims to pray 50 times a day. That’s 50! The prophet didn’t question it. But on his way back, Moses saved the day (he’s famous for that). He told Muhammad to go back and request that the number be decreased, that the burden is too high, that he’d experienced human nature with the Children of Israel, and 50 is just too much, and it isn’t going to work. The prophet went back and the number was lowered to 45. Moses again told him to return and request that the number be decreased. The number was again lowered, but not by much, to 40. Moses continued to send him back until the daily prayer was lowered from 50 to five. At that point, Moses still wanted to send him back, but Muhammad told him he was too embarrassed to go again, and the number remained at five. I would like to officially thank Moses for intervening to lower the number of daily prayers from 50 to five. Keeping up with five is tough enough. Every single command given to Muslims came from heaven to Muhammad on earth through the angel Gabriel. But when it came to prayers, the prophet was ascended to heaven to retrieve it directly. Praying is a Muslim’s direct link to God. It’s difficult to forget about God, to lie, steal, cheat or hurt when you’re constantly going back for five times a day to connect with him, to thank him and ask for his strength. It is like food for the soul. (I hear that eating small meals several times a day is a good way to stay healthy and keep your metabolism going.) So when you see a Muslim praying, remember this story. The problem is, I am not going near Islam, but Islam is coming to me, and I have no where to escape. Europe is already half-conquered by Islam, and now Islam is coming to Asian countries, where I live. And all these multiculturalism and diversity propaganda make such an easy environment that Islam can take advantage of and multiply. If I reject Islam coming to my country, they will simply use easy rhetorics like 'racist' and 'islamophobia' and the radical left will take care of the rest.

If you lack critical thinking skills, the ability to reason how or why a view is harmful to others, a persons decision will come down to tribalism and making the decision based on what group they closest resemble. Example, when I was homeless, a relatively trendy looking young man followed an older lady where I happened to be and tried to take her bag. I haven't seen a lot of Hitchens' debates, but I know he was an advocate for free speech, and that he once said we should amplify even the voices of Holocaust deniers, because we have the right to hear what they have to say. What I saw in that video was an authority figure talking over and insulting a member of his audience, without responding to a single thing she said to him, knowing everyone else would cheer him on regardless. The woman was wrong, but what he did there wasn't brilliant, it was lazy and cowardly.

However, Hitchens actually has talked about his position on the same thing, at great lengths, on multiple debates, along with evidence of oppressive laws in the Islamic countries. It isn’t that Hitchens has never mentioned anything before and was being assertive here. Assuming that the discussion was already going on with the free speech of women in Islamic countries, I believe that by mentioning Iran, the burden of proof shifts on the lady to prove why Iran is an example representing all the sharia following countries and what example of her qualifies as a refute to Hitchens’ stance, instead of Hitchens’ trying to prove himself. Nevertheless, it wasn’t coward or rude but maybe incomplete. I, myself, am trying to track that debate :)

I do think the burden of proof was on her, and he rightfully put her in the position of defending her claim at first. He made the claim that in Iran she wouldn't be allowed in public without a chaperone and a niqab, and he let her respond to that, which she didn't do very well. If he didn't want to continue after that, I think he should have said "I've already talked about this at great length at [event], I encourage you to watch it. I don't want to go into it again right now." Instead, what he did was effectively punish her for disagreeing with him and with the social norm represented in the room. If they had already established that he was right, and if she insisted on standing by her position anyway, then condemning her would be all he could do. He responded as if that were the case. Since everyone in the room did think it was established that he was right, they applauded. There was nothing she could really say in her defence at that point. To be clear, I don't think it was _uniquely_ cowardly. The Left uses social norms to silence people all the time. I'm glad that my country has a diverse, gender-balanced cabinet, but when the Prime Minister (who I voted for) justified that decision by saying "Because it's 2015", he was basically saying "If you don't already agree with my position, you don't deserve to have a conversation about it".
