About the Speaker: Hayat Alvi, Ph.D.,
Associate Professor, National Security Affairs
Hayat Alvi joined the U.S. Naval War College in 2007. Previously, she served as an assistant professor in the Political Science Department at American University in Cairo from 2001-05 and as the director of the International Studies Program at Arcadia University from 2005-07. She specializes in international relations, political economy and comparative politics with regional expertise in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. She also specializes in Islamic studies and genocide studies. She is proficient in Arabic and Urdu and is a Fulbright Fellow (Syria, 1993-94). Alvi has published numerous articles, books and book chapters.

This lecture actually ignores the other major power player in the Muslim world and Middle East in general - Turkey. Through the Muslim Brotherhood Turkey would clandestinely push their influence and promote extremism such as in the case of the Siege of Mecca and the most extreme Mujahideen that would go on to form Al Qaeda. The Muslim Brotherhood is essentially the public political wing of Turkish Clerics and originally comprised of the remnants of the intelligence apparatus and the bureaucracy of the Ottoman Empire.

The least informative speaker in this forum. This was grade school level and presented in a manner that seemed to doubt the audience IQ and education . This important subject needs to be revisited by a different and better expert.( Unless the grade school lecture is what was asked for?)
