'Islamophobia is costing blood' New study reveals negative Muslim representation in film industry

Riz Ahmed joins call for greater Muslim inclusion as film study reveals “dangerous stereotypes"
The report, ‘Missing & Maligned: The Reality Of Muslims In Popular Global Movies examined Muslim representation in 200 “popular films” from the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand released between 2017 and 2019 and found no Muslim speaking characters in 181 or 90.5% of the total sample.
Only six films featured a Muslim lead, co-lead or ensemble lead characters, and only one had a Muslim woman in an ensemble lead role, shared with two men. Of 41 primary and secondary Muslim characters, 53.7% were targets of violence, and 39% were perpetrators of violence.

Exact same problem in all Indian film industries (Bollywood and Regional). They always show negative character belongs to Islamic faith. This creates lot of stereotypes among the general Non-Muslim masses.I in my entire life have never seen an Indian movie showing a regular muslim person who works a normal job, has a family, has fun and likes to get entertained... just like everyone else. They always portray Muslims as some blood thirsty beasts. This needs to change, we need to work towards bringing this change.

Regardless what he's doing for a living, he is speaking up for us. His sins are between him and Allah SWT. We can condemn the act but we can't stop him from speaking up because he is a representation of a muslim in entertainment industry and he feels the struggle. Why can't we feel pity for those who sins because they haven't receive the hidayah instead of mocking them. It's pitiful when you don't even understand what you practice. I worked with him over 10 years ago on a home grown British film, he's extremly motivated, talented and presents himself in a very good way, if he got into doing some dawah work he'd be very successful and I'm sure would gain a very large Muslim following, he's also very good with the youth, I look forward to seeing if he does ever get in to working more for the dawah scene as it would really bring in a wider audience

It actually portrayed the characters as very human, but frustrated with life and showed how easy it is to be misguided in a search for meaning. Not that you would understand such subtlety. I doubt he will be in another like that. His success also brought him wokeness.

Only gripe I have with Riz Ahmad is in venom where his character said something about Ibrahim A.S sacrificing ishaaq (isaac) A.S. Every muslim knows this is not true. It was Ismail (ishmael). For a muslim to say such things on or off screen is darn right blasphemy. Film industry which is haram anyway (not judging Riz btw) and then saying these things....wat do you expect?

Sorry these stats are extremely misleading, It says that 1.6% of actors are muslim yet muslims make up 24% of the global population. But the 1.6% is talking about films made in the USA. where the percentage of muslims in the USA is 1.1%. Therefore the 1.6% is literally a fair number. 24% is the GLOBAL percentage of muslims. Muslims arent underrepresented in the USA. While islamophobia does exist in the film industry, these stats are literally fooling you all

The irony is lost on Riz Ahmed. It was his role as a suicide bomber in Four Lions that put him on the map. Riz is a moderate Muslim raised in a western society. But he is forgetting that the bulk of the 1 billion + Muslims are in ultra conservative countries that do not facilitate the type of movies that get Oscars. He mentions the terrible NZ shootings, but the western world condemned it (rightly so). What happened when the French teacher was beheaded? While many Muslims condemned it, there were many that praised it including heads of state.

Western movies always portray the East (Asia, Africa etc.) as being backwards, full of problems. The West is then presented as the hero and saviour of the East. Eastern people such as Afghans, Iraqis etc. are presented as being vicious, uncivilised, inferior and weak. The West, which is predominantly white, is presented as superior, civilised, powerful and great. This is mostly due to colonialism. Western orientalists and colonisers had a prejudicial idea that because of their skin colour, they were the ''master race''. They believed that they were supposed to ''civilise'' them and control them. Obviously this was just used as ''justification'' for their discriminatory views and the crimes perpetrated by the West against the East. Historical examples of Europeans using their skin colour to discriminate against others was when colonisers lied about Jesus and portrayed him as being white in order to tell non-whites that they are more like Jesus and that they are superior.
