It's uncanny how the old lady immediately sees who Joe really is. She thinks he's evil at first but within one encounter she realizes who he really is. Someone who helps the souls of humans transition to a better place. Very powerful scene the way he, for a brief moment, gives her a glimpse into the afterlife.
The mother - Lois Kelly-Miller, bless her soul, did a fantastic performance in this movie. Except for having the coolest accent in the world, her facial expressions said it all.
It's a sort of gallows humor. I've heard "I'd have to get better to die" quite a few times from friends and relatives when an illness was making life miserable for them.
Its also total nonsense. Doctors are treated like Gods in hospitals, and they certainly wouldn't do a nurses' job of pushing around patients and what not handling directly. They would have ignored or directed her to intake and a waiting area.
I love that they made Brad Pitt look like he glides across each shot. His shoulders and body almost never move like he hovers across the frame... Like death.
When she asked to go to that next place, then he said close your eyes, the look she gave... Like OH S**T he's really gonna take me... she as an actress showed it so well. One of the best scenes of acting I have ever seen.
I always thought Joe's words, "It's not your time, sister" showed that as powerful as he was, he too was under orders from a higher power that had its own schedule in the way of things.
Death gave her a vision of the other side, Its why he say's "soon", And she smiled, Her pain slightly lessened at the thought of Heaven waiting and existing.
What an extraordinarily gift he gave her. Knowing what comes next must have been a great comfort to her at what she knew was the coming end of her life.
I can see this part a hundred times but every time I see that look on the daughters face it makes me laugh to tears, it's priceless. I know it wasn't as fluent as a native but it was close enough to scare the hell out her. thanks
@@lancehobbs8012 He said, "Go over to doctor lady, momma gon' be fine now." Then he says, "Obeah evil. I not evil omen." Then the last time it sounds like he says " 'mon " he does because he says, "No, man, I on holiday." Which is a valid moment to say that. Also, " 'mon " or "man" is normal slang. What's up man? Man that sucks! Man thinks he's a tough guy! Also, I'm pretty sure all Aussies do or have drank fosters at least a few times so...
Her interactions with Joe show they 2 sides of life. The emerging emotional awareness of human emotion and the time of ending, of needing the long rest. These are my favourite scenes in this film and possibly Brads best performances in any of his films. It's a wondrous journey from understanding nothing to understanding it all.
Always loved this movie as he plays death as something that is not evil not bad just something that exists .. but still has compassion. These scenes actually felt comforting.
I always wonder what it is that he showed her that could bring such relief. Her loved ones in that next place, waiting for her? A vista of paradise? Her own self, young again? "soon".
When the grandma say Obeah Man... I love Brad Pitt face who reacting in this moment, he is like he think "Oh s h i t, she is strong, i am grilled/discovered " or "Say whaaaat ? "
It’s my hope that depending on how one lives his/her life the angel of death will be reflective of that personality before being taken away from this earth
@@stephenpassaggio9975 jesus christ its not racist! I thoguht the same thing. He was standing weirdly and obviously not "normal" which isnt always bad but from the woman's perspective he was definitely shifty. I thought it myself. Race has nothing to do with it. Get that crap out of your head.
I would, she will go to the next place peacefully. i am an old woman and it gives me a perspective, we all have to go to the next place, this issue is how.
We won't fully understand till we reach old age to see why she would rather go than to stay. Only you'd know till you get there when your ready for death.
I watched my mom die from cancer. She was weak, unable to leave her bed. She was out of it a little m. As much as I wanted her to not die, to not be sick, a part of me was relieved because she wasn’t suffering anymore
@@whystareatmyhighhair I assume you are judging serenity113. I will not judge you but I must say something. I have worked with dying children for 35 years. I have seen things that are hard to imagine and harder to describe. I can only presume, that by your comment, you have little experience with death. Some deaths are fortunate. Some deaths are horrible. For some, death is truly a relief. It is more than ok for Serenity113 to feel as she does. Rather we should celebrate the depth of her love for her mother to have assisted her. Be careful what and how you judge. Rather recognize that it is a world of vast experience. Be kind, be empathetic. Love.
When time has come to go, some older folks can see it coming, so they can step to you, to see you one last time and say goodbye. But It's up to you to recognize it for what it is, or u gonna regret it. When they face you, a kind smile on their face, but you're too egoistically involved into your "life" at least that's how you call this bunch of meaningless pile of crap. That's when u mess up. Bc it was then time to ask, time to confess, time to hug, time to take time.
Spot on. This happened to me visiting my grandma before I went overseas. I didn’t think it would be the last time. But she knew. It was way too rushed. I’ll never forget the look on her face as I was leaving. I’ll regret not spending more time forever.
I have seen this happen before where someone in a hospital says that they are sicker than another person when they have no idea what the other person is there for.
The accents are natural remind me of my Polish grandma speaking Polish to my Czechoslovakian pap they would speak in front of me pordportka but I said tell me the cuss words please so I don't get detention and grounded at home no mores
