Season 2, Episode 24
Definitely one of my favorite memories of the year, and just in time for father's day! I have my dad to thank for getting in into aviation literally since I could walk, but I never knew what a huge role it would play in my life. He even bought me my first GoPro! He says he had no idea what it would mean to me.
Happy Father's Day, and welcome into a whole new season of The Friendly Skies Channel! I hope you enjoy it even more than the last couple years that have meant so much to me.
P.S. I miss RU-vid Annotations...
Hey, did you guys know that the FAA actually certifies flight instructors to tell you everything that I try to convey in these videos? You should definitely talk to one of them instead of trusting some video you found on the internet, because who am I to tell you how to fly? I'm just a pilot sharing my experiences with the world, and these videos are not meant to be instructional or advisory in any respect.

In this video Mr. Friendly and his father enjoy a formation flight at sunset. His twin brother George was stuck in back of the formation in the high-wing. Mr. Friendly was always the favorite. George's silence speaks loudly of his sadness during this flight, all he ever wanted was some quality low-wing time with dad.

Just a few hints before your NEXT formation flight. At the beginning of the formation flight, there were questions about take off spacing and after takeoff, you asked lead what altitude he was going to use. Well, ALL of that should have been discussed BEFORE you even got in the airplane. At the very least, there should be a preflight briefing between all pilots to get an understanding of Procedures (frequencies, takeoff spacing, etc.), target Airspeeds (3 different airplanes), cruising Altitudes and planned Route of Flight. After takeoff is not the time to be talking about that. You will see that will make for a smoother and more pleasurable flight KNOWING that everyone is on the same page. Looking forward to Season 3.

A fantastic video as usual, Nick. One thing to keep in mind while doing any sort of formation is 91.111... "No person may operate an aircraft in formation flight except by arrangement with the pilot in command of each aircraft in the formation." Alot of people forget their preflight briefing on routes, altitudes, and formation positions before they go fly. Anyway, I can't wait for season 3! We need to get you down in Texas to fly the Baron. I just got back from flying it and I wanna see your reaction when you takeoff and fly a Vy climb in it at 2,500+ feet per minute!

It's not torque, nor his propwash you hit, but his right wingtip vortex (left roll). Basically its the positive pressure from below the wing going around the wingtip to equalize with the vacuum over the wing (counterclockwise as seen from behind the right wingtip). Another thing, you will always observe a drop in RPM when you put the carburetor heat on, even when you have carburetor icing. I would know I did a crosscountry flight a week ago, picked up carb ice both ways as seen by an RPM loss if you hold altitude or a descent (due to lesser power). Turning the carb heat on will make the power drop even more, then over the course of a minute, bring it back up. If the power doesn't go back up without adjusting the throttle, then your issue is not carburetor icing. Putting the carb heat on for a second just to see a drop in RPM won't do anything for you other than making sure the system works.
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 7 лет назад
But didn't you just describe that if there is no icing, you will not a small drop similar to during the run up, and if there is ice, the rpm will be further reduced?
@vincentr4190
@vincentr4190 7 лет назад
Let me put it this way: turning the carb heat on will result in about the same drop in RPM wether you have carb icing forming or not. The RPMs drop due to the warmer air being less dense, therefor you have less to ignite in the cylinders. Your best chance at detecting carb icing is at cruise or on the ground when you're losing RPMs without touching the throttle.

@friendlyskiesfilm why did you fly a 3 Mile base on your approach? My instructor and I agree that you should never leave the box (always fly a tight pattern in case you lose your engine) if atc gives you these instructions you can always say unable. Thoughts?
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 6 лет назад
Haha, why did I do it? Because they told me to. I personally think that if I told every tower "unable" a dozen times a day for a 3nm base, they would get sick of me REALLY fast. Just stay high on the base. I don't think there's a regulation that says you have to be at TPA at that point (could be wrong), but I've never had anyone complain. Downwind would be different, but if they told me to report a 3nm straight in, I wouldn't expect that to mean I have to be at TPA at 3nm. Now, here's where I'll tell you the word on the street: I will always respect your desire for safety, so don't take this the wrong way, but I have never heard of anyone doing this, and I do firmly believe that making a habit out of this too often would earn you a reputation with the tower facility. Of course, if you're only doing it once a month, that's another story. I'm based at a towered field, so they would have to deal with my request sometimes multiple times daily :P

As always, amazing video. Nice commentary about your landing, definitely going to help those who want to get into fly who don't yet understand it. Also, wanted to get your thought in this. How bad would it be if three people were flying in formation used autopilot to hold the same heading, same altitude and same speed. Do you think it could be dangerous and is better to fly in manual?
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 7 лет назад
Very interesting question!! I'd love to find out :)
@hempelcx
@hempelcx 7 лет назад
It could be helpful for the lead plane to be on autopilot on a XC as it would make life easier for the followers. But there's no way followers can hold a tight formation on autopilot since that's all about detecting changes in relative position and adjusting - they pay zero attention to heading, altitude, airspeed, or even looking for other traffic - their one and only job is to maintain position relative to the plane ahead of them, no matter what that plane does. Since Nick wasn't flying tight formation, it's a little different. They were maintaining a visual on the lead aircraft but weren't close enough to really hold a formation. That's not a knock, tight formation flying requires training and regular practice to remain proficient. Loose formations where each plane is mostly independent but also "under the command of a flight leader" are safer for typical GA and still super fun. I suspect it's possible if you're doing a formation XC you could have multiple planes on autopilot, maintaining visual, with manual adjustments as needed. The analog AP I have wanders/brackets quite a bit which would make it less helpful for that. It also doesn't have altitude hold. So in my case, I think AP wouldn't be much use as a follower, even in a loose formation. But as Nick said, "I'd love to find out :)".

As always, love your videos! Thanks for posting. I would like to ask you a question about carb heat. There seems to be an ongoing debated out there about use of carb heat in the Cherokee. All through my private instruction, my instructors NEVER used it, except in the run up. Now I fly with a friend who is a long time pilot but has never flown the Cherokee, (only 152,172, 182, up to Ballanca Super Viking). He insists that I put on carb heat on downwind (when rpm is still somewhat higher) and to leave it on all the way to landing. I noticed you applied carb heat on base, with rpm somewhat low, just to see if there was a drop, and then took it out. Can you give me YOUR take on the use of carb heat in the Cherokee. For instance, what would you have done if you detected roughness when you applied the carb heat. Thanks again

What is the idea behind lowering flaps seconds before flare? Is it the normal procedure on the Piper? Doesn't sound as a good idea to configure so late in the approach, and that might be the reason you made the first touchdown with excessive energy. Just asking, no criticism here...

I was wondering, is ATC communication somewhat similar to Marine Radio? I have my ROC(m) and I'm interested in going into general aviation. Just wondering if it would be similar.
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 7 лет назад
That's actually something I would love to know more about! I own a small boat, but am looking to split something like a 60ft boat with some friends in FL once I move. What can you tell me about how marine communications work? :D
@JasperBroadcasts
@JasperBroadcasts 7 лет назад
Well with Marine communications, we don't request clearances, unless we're going into government territory, or something like that. There's DSC, which is digital selective calling, which is basically when you hit a button on your radio and it sends a message to the coast guard, telling them you are in distress, with your location. VHF is i'm guessing what's used in Aviation, and is the main source of communication in maritime as well. Channel 16 is the coast guard channel, for VHF distress communication. There are plenty of other frequencies, such as channel 69, which is used for pleasure craft (jokes I know) communication, so if a Yacht club is running a regatta, and need to set marks. We use the NATO phonetics, and communication is more lax. For a 60ft boat, you would need a VHF/DSC radio, but I am not sure what else, as I work with small, 13ft Boston Whalers, in Canada.
@hempelcx
@hempelcx 7 лет назад
Aviation communication was derived from military maritime communication (as was aviation navigation derived from maritime navigation.) So I don't actually know maritime comms, but I expect a lot of the lingo will be similar. That said, non-Navy maritime comms today are probably a lot less formal than aviation comms are. We have frequent frequency changes because we cover a lot of ground in a short time and because we often have line-of-sight over a big area at any given time. There are certain frequencies that are reserved, such as 121.5Mhz for emergencies and ELT distress beacons (which are typically set off automatically.) VHF is primary for GA comm. No radio operators license is required for pilots flying within U.S. airspace. However, to fly outside U.S. airspace you need a FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit, which requires filling out a form online and paying $15 or so. I have one just in case I ever wanted to fly in Canada or something. Getting it doesn't really require any knowledge and they never expire.
